The Best Late Night Restaurants In Philly

"Masala Kitchen has two Philly locations, but only the 11th and Walnut Street location serves their Indian street food menu through 12am on the weekdays and 3am on the weekends. There are several kati rolls on the menu, along with handmade tawa roti packed with chicken or beef, and platters that come with rice and pita bread to make wraps. It’s all surprisingly delicious based on the fast-casual setting and chaotic location (nearby lots of bars)." - candis mclean

Have been here a couple of times for a quick lunch and really like paneer kaati rolls. Tasty and pocket friendly! Didn’t enjoy the egg rolls here were too bland and just had some onions inside! Curry rice was ok average I would say. Watch out for the warning labels on the mango lassi or any beverage you buy there, it’s pretty surprising to see such information.

The food tastes really good. But when you order a platter you expect enough curry to be given. However, they give you a small sample and when you ask for more (insufficient) they tell it’s extra. What’s good with tasty if you don’t get required portion.

I went to the Chestnut Street location and it is not handicap accessible. I was able to make it up the stairs, but the railing in the hallway were not maintained well. ( Tip: If you’re not going to maintain it, don’t paint it white. ). I ordered the samosas and felt that the Trader Joe’s frozen ones were actually better. I did have a very good roti, which was paneer. My other roti was not very good. I had the mango lassi and it didn’t even taste like mango. I won’t be going back.

We are Indian DJs, that get to travel all over America for Indian and Fusion weddings. We are based in Dallas and when we booked another wedding in the East Coast, we started putting a list of places we wanted to eat in Philly. Many people told us about Masala Kitchen. We were a bit skeptical to try it since we have had so many great Kati Rolls in NY. Masala Kitchen was great! We arrived before they even opened and patiently waited outside for 11am so we could enter the restaurant. The person taking our order was friendly and very helpful. I usually ask a series of questions before I order. He answered all my questions and lead us to the chicken Kati Roll section. We ordered all 3 of the chicken choices. Masala, Keema, and Tawa. They were all good but if I had to rank them it would be Masala, Tawa and then Keema. The next time we are in Philly, we will be back here for sure.

So glad my gf saw the word Masala. Nearly settled for a Bahn Mi but damn... this place is great. Delicious top to bottom. Great drinks. Greaaat prices. Especially for where you are. Adding this to my list of places I will go if I'm anywhere near in the city. Wow

Google
Place has great tasting food at a reasonable price. The Kati rolls are so good, but what really brought it home for me was the mint lemonade. Definitely recommend.

Google
I had the lamb roll thing and didnt finish it. Dry cheap meat and very spicy and funky. I like Indian food but this just was not it.

Google
Excellent Kati roll!! Good customer service. I tried their chicken qeema and boti roll and both are excellent with the right price point. Sujal customer service is also outstanding. He goes above and beyond to make sure that customers are satisfied with the food and service. Certainly will go back again.

Yelp
Great food but sometimes they do mess up a little but that's every restaurant. But I will definitely give it a 4 stars

Yelp
Best Indian street food I've had. I had aloo vegan roll and a veg biryani platter. The rice in the veg platter tastes so good! I'd like to recommend Chaas, the traditional Indian Spiced Yogurt drink. It's light, so you can drink it with meal, and I believe it's good for digestion.

Yelp
I love Kathi rolls. I eat them every time I go to India. These are pretty close to authentic in my mind. The chicken masala one was definitely a favorite. I also tried the chicken tawa, and it was good but the spice killed me a bit. I usually can handle some spice but I have a threshold. I can't blame them for that though. If it's your thing go get it. I'll stick with my creamier masala one.

Yelp
Masala Kitchen: Kati Rolls & Platters is a terrific spot for a casual lunch near Rittenhouse Square. Its floor-to-ceiling windows provide plenty of light and service is quick and friendly. Though my fellow diner's kati rolls looked terrific, I went with a Chicken Biryani (overnight marinated chicken cubes cooked along with Basmati rice on slow fire) platter, extra spicy. It was the perfect level of spice, well-balanced by the lettuce and pita provided on the side of the platter. Definitely recommend indulging in a mango lassi drink from the fridge--a thick and sweet treat!

Yelp
A great fast casual Indian spot with great hours! My brother frequents this location so I was excited to try. Got a chicken tawa kati roll with anda + lamb kebab roll. Loveeeddd the white sauce (get plenty of that on the side). Pricing is great and portions are reasonable - if you're eating a whole meal definitely recommend two rolls.

Yelp
I've been living in Philly for a few months now and I don't know why it took me so long to discover Masala Kitchen, but as they say, better late than never. This place is right in my neighborhood and I pass it every day, but not until one recent late night search for food lead me to try it. I've been ordering regularly ever since, making my way through their menu one delicious option at a time. Food 5/5 "Your Masaliscious order is ready!" This is the text you get once you've ordered from Masala Kitchen and the last time I saw it on my phone, I thought, oh yeah! Couldn't be truer. The first couple of times I ordered from Masala, I ordered Kati rolls, both vegan and meat varieties. I hadn't known this type of Indian food on Long Island, so I had no idea what I was ordering. Now I think of it as a kind of Indian-style burrito...so yummy, and I was hooked from that first visit. I've subsequently tried a couple of their platters, a bit on the healthier side, and they were equally delicious! Highly satisfying! Atmosphere 5/5 The dining room at Masala is pleasant, open, clean and tastefully decorated, with plenty of seating, more akin to a takeout place than a restaurant. Service 5/5 I have yet to have any sort of negative experience with anyone on staff at Masala. Everyone who's helped me has been super friendly and efficient, and this makes me happier to patronize the establishment. Summary If you're in the Rittenhouse area and looking for something satisfying that's flavorful and delicious, I highly recommend giving Masala Kitchen: Kati Rolls and Platters a try.

Yelp
I stayed in a hotel in Rittenhouse Square for one night, getting into town on the late side, so I DoorDashed Masala Kitchen. I ordered both the achari paneer and the paneer masala because I couldn't decide between them. I can't get kati rolls near me, so I wanted to indulge a little! My order wasn't packaged as well as it could've been, so the sauces leaked a little, and the rolls were a little bit greasier than I'd have liked. Overall, though, they were really tasty, and I'd definitely order from this spot again if I were back in town.

Yelp
The food was great! Didn't have my go to Indian plates that I always get which I appreciated because it made me try other things. This chicken biryani was sooo good. Pretty spicy. The masala chai was just as one could expect. Tasty. And I got a little side of creamy tomato sauce to calm the spicy. Generous portion and there is more chicken under that rice (regular portion chicken). 10/10 would recommend. The cashier was nice too. Great job guys!

Yelp
Walked in here randomly the other night looking for a quick weeknight dinner before an evening event. I was the only customer which felt a little awkward but the staff were SO kind and friendly. My food (a chicken tikka masala roll) was delicious and incredibly cheap. It was $6.83 which seemed absurdly inexpensive. The guy taking my order asked if I just wanted one and based on the price I worried that maybe this was like a tiny SnackWrap or something. But I stuck with the one and it was totally a normal serving. Like, I ate the full thing without leftovers, but I wasn't hungry afterward. They also had a bar with various sauces. I used the white sauce, which was tasty. I did not buy a drink, which I regretted since they had some lassis that looked good. I've visited (and reviewed) their other location which was much busier. I'm not sure why this place was so empty but maybe they serve more of a lunch crowd because it's Center City. My memory is also that the other location was more expensive when I ordered from an app. So my recommendation is to go to the Chestnut St location and order in person! And don't make the mistake I did--order a drink.

Sarah L.

Yelp
I love this when I'm craving a quick meal! I think splurging for a sauce was worth it, but i also am very glad that they have two available in restaurant. Just one was plenty as a meal!
google avatar

Yelp
I love exploring all different types of Indian food. In fact, I even buy frozen Indian meals to keep in my freezer when I'm on the road. None of the food from this place tasted good to me. I don't think I would go back. There are other Indian restaurants that are just more appealing to me. Give this place a try and see what you think?
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
Overall a okay spot to grab a quick bite, especially after drinking at night because of their opening hour. Also some vegetarian and vegan options. Got the orange coconut lassi and it tasted like cheesecake! The Anda Curry Platter was a limited time item and the only curry dish in the menu. Don't forget the hot sauce!
google avatar

Amy Z.

Yelp
If you're looking for a quick, filling, and affordable meal in the Rittenhouse Square area, would highly recommend checking out Masala Kitchen! I got a Chicken Masala kati roll on whole wheat, which looked small but was actually quite filling and very flavorful. They also had self-serve sauces (white sauce, hot sauce) that you could have with the dishes. What was really amazing was the price -- one Kati roll for ~$6-7! Food: 1. Chicken Masala Kati Roll (4.5/5)
google avatar

El K.

Yelp
I was excited to try this place and finally decided to stop playing around and get them. Ordered the Chicken Tawa and Achari Paneer and Rose Lassi to wash it down. Taste: For me, the chicken tawa was on the salty side and interestingly enough, the achari paneer was more on the blend side. I did put the white sauce and hot sauce together but it didnt enhance the flavor for me. Price: inexpensive. I will give this place another try because who knows I probably picker the wrong items.

Yelp
Can't say enough good things about this place. Inexpensive, filling, authentic, and delicious. The service is good and I always see couples getting a bite before their next stop on date night. Laid back easygoing street food one of my favorite lunch spots in the city. Pro-tip get the Rose Lassi
google avatar

Catharine N.

Yelp
Yummmm I loved the mango lassi and my chicken tikka masala roll. This place is a casual spot for Indian street food and it delivered! My roll was a bit spicy but overall delicious!

T H.

Yelp
Walked in randomly. Was pleasantly surprised. What flavorful Kati rolls. As a vegetarian ordered the Paneer Masala and Jeera Gobi. Can't say which one was my favorite. Nice clean place. Good service. Will be back when I am back in Philly. Wolfed down the food too quickly to take a picture.
google avatar

Payal P.

Yelp
As my friends call it..."An Indian burrito". This thing packs a lot of spice. It is so perfect. Not too spicy but not too mild as well. Try the hot red sauce and a ton of that white mayo sauce. Even without the random sauces the inside is full of a mixture of red onions, tender meats or paneer, and some good spices. The masala tea is authentic and totally worth a try.
google avatar

Magdalena Ines T.

Yelp
I ordered the chicken biryani platter. It comes with like sliced pita bread, lettuce, perfectly spiced and seasoned chicken and rice. Get the red sauce if you dare, it's spicy. Like a warm heat in your stomach heat. Service is quick, but my platter took a bit longer but I didn't mind - quality takes time. Also got the mint lemonade, be warned it's not a spearmint, York peppermint patty mint, more herby but I like it and it's cooling effect is a welcomed relief eating the biryani with red sauce. 10/10 would go again. This place is my ol' reliable for me.

Annie T.

Yelp
Refreshing Indian flavors in the middle of Philadelphia! Small, hole in the wall kinda place but delivers what it promises. Doesn't offer the zing offered in New Jersey restaurants perhaps but food has clean and fresh flavors. Recommend.
google avatar

Roshan R.

Yelp
Chicken kheema and egg roll - 5/5 Chicken tawa and egg roll - 5/5 Chicken masala and egg roll - 3/5. Too sweet. Makhani sauce was overpowering. Paneer achari and egg roll - 4/5 Chicken and rice - 2/5. The chicken was bland. Had absolutely no flavor. The white and red sauce are the saving grace. With all the food trucks around serving amazing chicken over rice, it is disappointing that they serve bland chicken with the dish. Masala tea - 1/5. I don't know what that was but I literally saw them mix milk with some instant powder and serve it to me.
google avatar

Jo L.

Yelp
Paneer Roll was the favorite! Aloo Roll was very flavorful Chicken Roll - the best bites included the onion bites. There wasn't too much onions though but the chicken itself wasn't bad
google avatar

Mike A.

Yelp
Amazing and affordable wraps. Flavors here are delicious and strong, just how I like my indian food. Everything ive tried has been excellent. If i were still in college this would be perfect late night eats. As it stands this is my go to for a quick and delicious indian lunch/snack Try this place. Makhani chicken is outstanding

James I.

Yelp
Two orders with no rice. This is $30 worth of food?? Never again. Shame on you Masala Kitchen.
google avatar

Julia H.

Yelp
this place was truly DELICIOUS. visited philly for a concert and stopped in for a quick bite here before heading to the venue and if im ever in the area again i will be coming back. the flavors were great, not too spicy or salty and they did a great job making sure it wasnt too oily. growing up around south indian food, i know that many restaurants down their biryani in ghee. not the case here. will also note how affordable it is. around $20 for two of us. a steal!
google avatar

Minaz M.

Yelp
Went here today expecting to buy myself lunch from SPICE END but to my surprise found Masala Kitchen in place of Spice End. Limited menu (no vada pav, etc that spice end offered!) of kathi rolls and biryanis.. I got the paneer masala and lamb kebab.. I found both pretty dry and not thaaaat tasty. Super bummed that spice end closed down.
google avatar

Shelby A.

Yelp
My husband and I love the Kati rolls, especially chicken masala Kati rolls and the paneer masala Kati rolls. We often ask for ours to be extra spicy, and the spice level is perfect! The Kati rolls are super flavorful and delicious, you can also add egg to them, we usually do not, but a friend of ours does and she loves it. The chicken and rice is also a very solid dish. The white sauce is amazing, it always comes on the side, and you can also purchase a bottle of it. I also really enjoy their mango lassi and Kala Khatta. They are open late, so it's a perfect lunch, dinner, or late night snack/meal. You can't go wrong ordering from Masala Kitchen!
google avatar

Reviewguru C.

Yelp
There are two Masala kitchens in center city, Philly. While placing order, keep an eye on which location your order is being placed. Kati rolls and platters are good. Tried chicken tawa kati roll and platter. Both good! Fresh and flavorful.

Cassidy K.

Yelp
super fast service, delicious asf. said it was under "remodeling" but i thought it was beautiful. everyone should go!!
google avatar

Ning N.

Yelp
The food here is delicious. Lots of spices and flavor. My favorites are the non-meat rolls, particularly gobi and paneer. Every time I have been here, they make your food really fast so you don't have to wait long after placing your order, which is great when you're in a rush. I've never dined in but they have a fairly nice, modern interior but I noticed the chairs didn't look the cleanest lol. Nothing a quick wipe down wouldn't solve though. It is kinda expensive for the size of the roll, but I guess it's kinda expected for center city. I recommend trying it, especially if you love spicy and flavorful food.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
I'll save you the suspense --the street vendors around the city serve better halal chicken with much more complex and varied flavors . Amd the yogurt and hot sauce here taste like ...well , nothing . The hot is just hot --no vinegar balance --and the yogurt tastes more like mayonnaise or ranch dressing . The biryani chicken is meh , the rice was fluffy , but I found myself wanting a better balance of flavors . I asked if they had any other sauces --or even just kitchen vinegar or lemon or lime . They didn't . Kind of weird but whatever . I agree with the other reviews that mentioned that it has a weird mish mash of flavors and it can't decide what it wants to be , but definitely does not taste like any authentic Indian food I've had before . Not bad , just not my jam .
google avatar

Jignesh G.

Yelp
The MK Chicken and Lamb was pretty bad. They used too much garam masala spice. To the point where it didn't taste very Indian at all. Very odd taste. Additionally, the meat was very chewy and rubbery. The Kati rolls aren't bad going in. Going out...well that's a different story.

Rock G.

Yelp
Excellent food. The ambiance is so-so....more of a takeout place (though you can do sit down if you are looking for casual). Flavorful and they didn't cut corners.
google avatar

Jonathan C.

Yelp
Great flavorful food! Love the fact that they have both kiosk order and regular person cashier ordering. They are open late too which is nice. Ordering is very quick. Get your own white and red sauce from the bar as it is self serve. Multiple locations is great too. Would suggest the rolls over the platter.
google avatar

Lady G.

Yelp
Great cheap eats! Lots of meat on the pitas and good flavor. We got 1 chicken, 1 lamb. Both were good but the chicken was better. You can't beat the prices. Clean quick and friendly.
google avatar

Jon L.

Yelp
Great Kati roll takes it up a notch from any street Kati. And lassis were delicious too!
google avatar

Alyssamarie G.

Yelp
I have ordered here 3x this week!! The Chicken Biryani is awesome on its own, and even better when you add paneer. Extra chicken option is great too, just know the extra chicken is a scoop of the chopped grilled chicken they use in the MK chicken platter vs. the chunks of marinated chicken in the biryani. I order directly from their website and it's always ready in 15 minutes, just like they say. Everyone there is so nice when we pick up, too. Will def keep coming here!
google avatar

Jai S.

Yelp
Simple and awesome Achari paneer Kati roll. This is a tiny shop and food is authentic
google avatar

Jocelyn T.

Yelp
This place is SOOO GOOOD. Came here for a weekday lunch, there was no line when we came in but as we were eating, a decent amount of people filtered in and out of the store. I ordered the chicken tawa kati roll and the paneer masala kati roll. Both were so flavorful and delicious. I've never had a kati roll before thiz but I'll definitely be back to have more. My coworker described it as an Indian burrito. One kati roll did not seem enough for lunch for me so I ordered two. I ended up finishing 1.5 of the rolls I ordered. My coworker and I agreed that 1.5 kati rolls were the best serving size for our lunch meal. Also, I got the Rose lassi on the side and that was pretty good too, a little too thick to drink out of the bottle but def worth the effort. I'll probably try the mango next time.
google avatar

Francesca A.

Yelp
Love both locations. Aloo paneer is my favorite. You can't beat the price for a great vegetarian meal!!! I also get extra tomato sauce and I use it when I grill chicken at home
google avatar

Vishal N.

Yelp
Paneer masala is THE BEST kati roll in the menu. I tried most of the veggie kati rolls but paneer masala is much delicious and my all time go to every single time I go to Philly. They red and white sauce is the perfect sweet and savory combination with the paneer.
google avatar

Abraham K.

Yelp
Not as good as the other Masala Kitchen location. The walls are a lot more sparse and it looks like they are still getting everything in order. Overall, the food is what you would expect. All about that Chicken n' Rice. Kati rolls are all really solid too. Make sure you get plenty of white and red sauce.
google avatar

Shubhi M.

Yelp
I've only ever had the paneer masala kati roll and platter but they're both so tasty! I don't know what spices they use to make it so good but wow it definitely works. The platter is good if you're very hungry but I personally think you get more of an authentic taste with the kati roll because of the bread they use. We got this to go and were scared it was going to get soggy but it stayed surprisingly fresh and didn't get soggy. The mango lassi is pretty good but a little expensive.
google avatar

Prabh P.

Yelp
Its a casual indian kitchen food spot. They mainly have kathi rolls, platters, biryani and lassis. I got the special lamb and chicken platter and it came with lettuce and pita bread. They have delicious white sauce and couple of other sauces to try from. They have good vegetarian options too. Definitely worth it if you something quick n go. They deliver too and have good seating option.
google avatar

Andrea K.

Yelp
Great find! Was very satisfied with the size and taste of my roll. The value is great. I ordered the chicken Tawa roll which was good and my boyfriend ordered the chicken masala roll which was delicious. We will be going back soon. We also both got a rose lassi which we enjoyed
google avatar

Richard A.

Yelp
Did a take out for lunch for 3 of us. All 3 of us loved every bite. Yummmy. Fresh and delicious Chicken Biryani Chicken n Lamb Chicken n Rice. All were outstandingly delicious. Can wait to go back
google avatar

Sridharan R.

Yelp
Definitely the best Kati roll place in the City. Their best is Masala Paneer, Masala Chicken Kati rolls. Their tawa chicken roll was little dry but spicy, recommend if you like spicy rolls. Ambience was good as well .

L M.

Yelp
Took a chance and ordered from this location and immediately regretted it. All meat (lamb kabob, chicken kheema) in order was too salty and tasted stale and the tawa roti was so soaked in the grill oil that the taste was lost. the rose lassi was saturated with syrup and not enjoyable. The meal was inedible and had to be discarded. For authentic Indian cuisine look elsewhere.
google avatar

Bradley C.

Yelp
Outstanding food at unbeatable prices. This place is even open super late. Probably the best late night food in Rittenhouse neighborhood. I would strongly recommend that you come and eat the Lamb Kabab kati roll with yogurt sauce.
