"Masala Square Indian Kitchen (23 Union Sq.) opened in Somerville’s Union Square last weekend, taking over the space briefly occupied by South Indian restaurant Godavari Mini. Situated next door to Gracie’s Ice Cream, the new family-run restaurant focuses on cuisine from the northern Indian state of Punjab, with special emphasis on gluten-free and vegan options. Dishes include masala hummus, paneer wings, eggplant bhartha, channa masala, brown curry, and more. The restaurant features a lunch special where diners can choose from vegan, vegetarian, or non-vegetarian entrees and an appetizer, served with rice and naan, for $10. Masala Square also offers free delivery. Masala Square also plans to work with the Union Square Farmers Market to source produce during the summer, and it will soon offer cooking classes, according to Dilreet Kaur, the daughter of the family. Her father, Singh, is the chef, and in addition to teaching classes, he also plans to film a show. This is the family’s first restaurant venture in the Boston area, and they are considering possible expansion in the future." - Dana Hatic

Google
First time dining in and the experience was amazing! The food was fresh, hot and very authentic. The service was great! Really nice and attentive. I would recommend Masala if you are ever in the mood for some authentic Indian food. Give them a try!!

Google
I was walking around the neighborhood hoping to find a place where I could find something delicious and healthy, so I came in to try their Supreme Samosa dish and mango lassi. It was the perfect meal packed of goodness and all the nutrients I needed to feel good! Recommend!

Google
Never expected that my impromptu visit to this place would end up as a memory, I would cherish for years to come. I am sure, whenever I am around, I would give them a visit for another round of their delicious food they have to offer. My kids loved the Chicken Tikka Masala & the Garlic Naan, which we had Malai Kofta, I can go on and on and on about how delicious the Malai Kofta was, I am still drooling as I write this review of Malai Kofta and yearn for more of the delicious goodness, they have to offer. I would recommend this place for being VFM and hits the right notes at the right spot. Kudos to the Chef, who doles out these gastronomical masterpieces. Masala Square, I owe you a visit whenever I am around for another round of Malai Kofta & Garlic Naan.

Good food, good service and amazing drinks. See ya boy on the hall of spice! The challenge was surprisingly easier than I thought 👀

Google
Came in at 11:30 pm and got the samosa and mango lassi 8 dollar deal, and it was very worth it! Also, I got an Indian cocktail which was so good and different than what im used to. I'm in a really good mood because of the food and good vibes here. Girl working cashier was also super nice despite us coming in so late, thank you sm~

Google
This place situated in a prime location, the overall experience is okay. However, a standout is the must-try mango lassi..

Google
Food was amazing, this is a proper Indian restaurant that knows how to use its spices. My girlfriend is gluten and dairy free and they had a lot of great options for her to eat, and they were willing to make any dish dairy free if it wasn’t. Our server Jessie also provided great service and made sure we were well taken care of. Overall, great service, great options, and amazing taste. I wish there was a location where I’m from so that I could come back over and over

Google
Very good quality food. Tasteful. Good Indian taste I had after a long time in US. This was my first time here. Even the rice which comes with gravy, it had ghee/butter in it along with cloves. All in all a must visit place if you are craving for good and tasty and authentic north indian food Ami served us the food and provided us with top notch service. I do not get delighted easily with the taste and service, but I did get delighted here with the service and food

Yelp
Every dish had me mind blown. The flavors put into each dish were spot on everything we were expecting and more I understand why so many say that Masala Square is a hidden gem for Indian food‼ The chicken tikka masala was my favorite with its creamy, addictive tomato flavor, but the potatoes in the vindaloo were spiced and cooked perfectly as well. We loved the chicken biryani as well Although you can adjust the spice level, I'd say medium was the perfect amount of spicy I could tolerate enjoyably A must try here is the mango lassi, the yogurt flavor within paired perfectly with the mango and its consistency was super enjoyable! I also recommend trying the supreme samosas! I'm glad we upgraded from the regular to supreme because the difference was the chana (chickpea) curry they topped off with that was the most flavorful and had the most refreshing hint of herbs‼ Overall, I am 100% coming back here to try more and I definitely want to taste their variety of stuffed naan next time

Yelp
Masala has a terrific luncheon buffet 1130 to 3 but get there by 230. Food is good, wait staff is prompt and friendly, prices are good. Service is great,

R K.

Yelp
Food was good, nothing super great but just average or slightly above average!! Services was really good!!

Phil S.

Yelp
Realizing that I was falling behind on my reviews of Indian/South Asian restaurants, we decided to re-visit Masala Square. This excellent restaurant is a bit "fusiony" and offers slight variations on standard Indian fare, featuring instead some amazing dishes. We started with their Supreme Samosa, a variation of Mumbai-style samosa chat. It was the hands-down winner of the meal, a bit spicy, incredibly well prepared. The samosa itself was ok, but that's because I'm partial to Punjabi samosas. We tried their chicken korma, which was good, but not special, and their onion naan, which was absolutely perfect. The restaurant was quiet when we arrived - EXCEPT for another diner/bozo who was watching some video on his cellphone at top volume. Why the staff didn't ask him to use his headphones of just f-----g stop is beyond me. Nevertheless, the waitstaff was attentive and welcoming. So why 4 stars, not 5? There are a lot of South Asian restaurants around, some are better imho, some are less expensive. This wasn't pricey, but definitely on the high end of the range. Second, the korma should have been a bit zestier.

Lisa V.

Yelp
What a treat! Everything was delicious. We came in looking for a snack and chose several items! All of it was fantastic! The service was easy and swift and the ambiance was clean, modern and had an upbeat feel.

Yangsoo S.

Yelp
Hidden gem! I was not expecting this place to be this good to be honest, we ordered saag paneer, dal, Navratran Korma, Dal Makhani, Paneer pakoras, kheer and garlic nan. They were all delicous, perfectly cooked and flavorful. In particular, we thought kheer was the best one we had in Boston. Only con would be high price but I'll definitely try their other dishes next time. Also, restaurant itself has a cool vibe with open bar concept, I will certainly dine in there next time and try their special drinks! 100% Recommend if you're visiting Union square!

Aditi A.

Yelp
We went to the union square location of this restaurant and the food was sub par and the service was really really slow. We needed up waiting 30 minutes just to get our check and even longer for the food. Will not repeat.

Jeff W.

Yelp
Food was excellent, spicy without being overwhelming (unless you want it that way), great presentation. I had the malai kofta, which was rich and flavorful. Perfect spice level (medium), with just the right amount of kick. I usually go medium at first, I'd definitely try spicy next time. The menu is very straightforward- a few specials, then a list of the standards (tikka masala, saag, korma) and you pick your protein. I liked this, much more straightforward than a five page menu. Ambiance is very relaxing, at least at 5 pm on a Saturday. Music in the background but no problem hearing the people I was eating with. Service was fantastic too. Attentive without being smothering. Our waitress, Brav, was first rate - helpful, friendly, cheerful demeanor. We live in New Hampshire now, but have lived in many other places with lots of different cuisine. I have to say this is one of the best Indian restaurants I've eaten at.

Suzy Q.

Yelp
I love this for value and quality based on cost, fresh and consistent which is important.

Pradnya M.

Yelp
Nice family run place for Indian food. We ordered samosas which were tasty. Chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloo and paneer tikka masala. Vindaloo was spicy for me but tasty. Naans were soft and not chewy which was a good thing. Prav was good and prompt with our food. Rasmalai was yummy for dessert

Sanah B.

Yelp
Decent but nothing special. I can see they cater to the northeastern palates here which I understand but the flavors were very tame and didn't really hit the spot for me. The service was lacking; they didn't check on our party of four much at all--they didn't ask if we enjoyed the meal or needed anything else after they brought our entrees out. I didn't touch my tamarind margarita because it was both way too sweet (even after I asked for the least sweet drink!) and too sour, the worst of both worlds. I didn't go out of my way to tell the waitress but it would have been nice if they noticed (or you know, came over at any point before giving us the check) and offered something else. The food itself was fresh and filling (I liked the saag tofu and channa best). But the aloo gobi was undercooked. And the mushroom matter didn't work for me flavor wise. The dress I wore still smells like the restaurant nearly a day later...be warned.

Meena K.

Yelp
I really like the cleanliness and attention to detail. Many Indian restaurants are cluttered, dusty and grimy. Not this place. Clean, contemporary and casual. It's Saturday night and the place is quiet, but not sleepy. There is a hugely active takeout piece that keeps the kitchen hot and busy. The decor is good and I love the photos of curry challenge winners on the wall. Appetizer of samosas was very good. Asked for mint chutney along with the tamarind sauce and both were delicious. Ordered one medium spice and one hot spice dish. There was actually a difference, as some places are all just one level of spice -- hot!! The spicy was legit spicy, so asked for raita. Potatoes in the raita were a different twist, but welcome to calm down my tongue. Got the lamb biryani and the lamb was tender, but too many onions for my taste. The chicken korma was good too; white meat instead of dark meat, so not as juicy. Overall, great place and we'll come again. I might even cater from here for work events.

Kavya R.

Yelp
Got my food only after two hours of placing the order - I wish I were exaggerating. We saw others who came much later getting served first. They had the nerve to say that we had to be willing to wait because we ordered "too much food" - we had only ordered 3 dishes... Plenty of better Indian restaurants with better/more authentic food too. Go there instead.

Ajaya R.

Yelp
The service was SO SLOW. My food arrived 2 hours after I placed the order, and there were people that arrived fully after my group that had their orders fulfilled before mine. The staff was not understanding and argued I ordered "too much food" (I had ordered enough food for just 3 people) and that because of this I would "have to wait". Not a great experience.

Doreen L.

Yelp
Had better Indian food in Boston and elsewhere. Didn't taste very Indian and wouldn't try again. Not even the Biryani...sorry, no!

Matt G.

Yelp
Incredible. We had 5 delicious meals from our takeout order. Fresh incredible flavors. Succulent sauces. Big chunks of lean chicken. Saag paneer to die for! Pakoras from heaven! YUM.

Juliet M.

Yelp
Delicious food and great service! We got pakoras, garlic naan, tikka masala, korma, and aloo Gobi. All of them were super flavorful and we plan on going back.

Mikayla T.

Yelp
Our food was DELICIOUS here! Our waitress, Jessie, made wonderful recommendations that did not disappoint. Even the drinks had a fun spin on some classics. Clean, fast service, and a yummy dinner made for a lovely Friday night.

Nino E.

Yelp
This is only a review for the samosas. After trying about 5 different samosas in Massachusetts, Masala Square's taste the best. Where other samosas would be too salty, soft, dry, lack certain ingredients (like peas or spices) - Masala Square hits the marks the best. The only thing missing from my visit was mint cilantro chutney sauce (the green sauce) which I prefer to eat my samosas with.

David B.

Yelp
The food was phenomenal. Our 2nd time here, and just as good as the 1st time we ate here. Decent kid's menu as well.

Luke C.

Yelp
Food was solid, and I appreciated that the curry was flavorful even with the dairy-free option, which I think is something that many restaurants don't consider for Indian curry. We liked the Pakoras and the Samosas (pakoras were better). I got two different fish curries on two different visits, and both were solid. We were not as excited for the cost, which is more than a number of comparable restaurants within 1-2 miles, but their location is pretty convenient and central right now. As well, they were training some new staff, so times were a bit slow, but it's understandable. They just don't give enough rice! We had to ask for more. We actually talked to management about this one, and apparently a lot of people wasted rice, so they decreased how much rice they were giving. If you are coming from the climbing gym ask for more rice or naan.

Adam S.

Yelp
One of the best Chana masalas I've had :) The atmosphere was nice. Cozy and modern. And the servers were very nice. Polite, answered all our questions and kind with a great smile (:

Tiff L.

Yelp
A family owned business right at the heart of Union Square, Masala Square serves up delicious comfort Indian cuisine. Jalfrelzi - This brown curry is thinner than most curries I've had but still packs a lot of spices and heat! Malai Kofta - The dish was creamy and delicious! I loved the cashew curry and it complements the veggie croquette well. Probably one of my favs and will have to get next time! Supreme samosa - A loaded samosa that is very flavorful, creamy, and spicy! Pakora - Stuffed with spinach, onion and cauliflower in a chickpea batter, this is fried to perfection! Garlic Naan - Crispy and so good! Friendly staff and will definitely have to visit again!

Deb P.

Yelp
Pricey but good would recommend it to others don't know what else to say review requires I say more

Simony P.

Yelp
Best Punjabi Indian food I have had in the Boston area. Will definitely come back again. Personal favorite was saag curry with mushrooms

Jack V.

Yelp
We went here for dinner and ordered the pakoras, chicken tikka masala, chicken botian, and naan. All of our dishes were well seasoned, and the chicken was perfectly cooked! The sauce with the pakoras was great. Our food came out very quickly - the appetizer took minutes and the mains were right after we finished our appetizer. Service was excellent. We loved the food and cannot wait to come again! Highly recommend the dishes we got and the medium spice level was great.

Parita A.

Yelp
We've been wanting to try Masala Square for a little bit now and finally took the plunge and ordered some take-out. The food was delicious! Good portion sizes in the vegetarian combo and the spice level was there! Super delicious!

Sara L.

Yelp
SO good! We got the samosas and mild chicken tikka masala curry. The samosas were so tasty and and so big for only $6. The staff was super nice and had a cool inside. Will definitely be coming to try more!

Tatiana G.

Yelp
Wonderful family owned Indian spot!! food is yummy and quick and the people really make it :)

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Awesome place to go if you're looking for a colon cleanse! If you're looking for good Indian food and don't want to spend the entire next day on the toilet, skip this place. I ordered Uber Eats and they forgot part of my order (good thing because I can't imagine tearing up the bathroom any more than I did). The papadams tasted like I was eating flour out of the bag. The Chana masala was tolerable but definitely not good enough to crap myself all day for.

Keith M.

Yelp
The best Indian food in Boston. Have been here multiple times and have always been impressed. The curries are very flavorful and staff are all super helpful and nice. Its so great that I chose to go here for my birthday dinner and do their spice challenge ( which is also so tasty! ). Ordered delivery and can report its just as good as in person! Cant wait to be back soon

Harpal B.

Yelp
We ordered 4 naan, Chicken Tikka Masala, Paneer saag, chicken biryani, and malai kofta and it was perfectly filling for 5 people. We're Indian and Stu j to the medium spice level and it was flavorful. The service was absolutely wonderful and the food was ready quickly as well. 10/10 would definitely recommend to all my friends stopping by in the area. Hope to stop by again and try the spicy challenge one day.

Aakansha B.

Yelp
This is authentic Punjabi food:) The paneer makhani was amazing! So was the garlic naan.

lakshay c.

Yelp
Worst food ever. Being a indian i will not recommend this place. There are many more indian restaurants and way more better than this place in and around Boston. Will nit recommend. Would prefer 0 stars. Chicken mint curry was awful, they served boiled chicken with pyaaz tamatar masala gravy, which was not cooked. Samosa chaat felt like frozen samaosas and naan was just as good as frozen naan.

Arianns M.

Yelp
Some of the best Indian food I've had!! Mild was still very flavorful and the medium was not too spicy but definitely packed a punch. Staff was super friendly and offered us more rice if we needed since we ate inside. Good amount of meat and sauce for the price.

Janet R.

Yelp
We ordered twice from here since recently moving to Assembly Row, and we will definitely continue coming back. We initially got the Lamb Curry spiced hot ($20), and then the Chicken spiced hot ($17) on our second visit... The curry was nice and thick plus well flavored, and at least the lamb was tender for the extra charge. However, if you want to save a few bucks, just go with the chicken because it too was of good quality. Also, their Spicy Hot actually packs a punch... And we like HOT, but keep it in mind when ordering. For both pickups, we went with the Potato Naan ($5) and the Veggie Samosas ($6), and enjoyed them a lot! Although they had the onion chutney we always use with the Samosas, we were kind of disappointed that they didn't even sell a yogurt based dip we often put on the naan... We did get over it though since the food itself was so yummy and our taste buds were singing. We plan to add this restaurant to our new list of favorites. Enjoy!

Casey A.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this. I wanted to support the restaurant during COVID because I'm a Union Square resident and don't want the places around here to suffer! However, I was so disappointed in my meal. I feel bad even leaving this review. I ordered the chicken tikka masala to keep it pretty basic my first time ordering from here. I asked for it to be spicy. I'm not sure there was a single spice used. It tasted like a really creamy tomatoy pasta sauce. I had to cook onions and garlic with some garam masala and red pepper flakes at home and incorporate that into the take out. I also got the daal which was just okay, but again no spice?? I will say that the naan was pretty good, and I got a good portion of rice which was included with the two dishes. Maybe I'll try again but I was pretty disappointed.

Debra T.

Yelp
Saag is absolutely delicious. Would love to see this place add option of riced cauliflower as substitute for rice. Excellent food.

Natalie S.

Yelp
I ordered a mildly spicy chicken tikka masala (which, after asking about it, comes with rice). The tender chicken came marinated in a steaming hot, thick tikka masala sauce, slightly spicier than I expected, but the cilantro suitably countered the spice. Unlike many Indian restaurants that use flavorless and/or short-grain rice, this one used delicious, fluffy, long-grain rice. I went to bed ruminating about my homey, warm, and pleasant food experience. The complimentary garlic naan came as an exciting surprise. I didn't care much for it--it was rather firm and garlic-y. However, I'm not generally partial to garlic naan. As a side note, the girl at the register was super nice, bubbly, and considerate. The heartwarming fact that this is a family establishment reinforces my positive regard for this place. Next time I come here, I'm going to try a vegan or vegetarian option with a dessert!

Cathy Z.

Yelp
Delicious Indian food in the heart of Union Square! Masala Kitchen is a family-owned spot replacing the former India Palace. Seems like they mostly do a takeout business because the restaurant was completely empty when we came in for pickup, but it's bright and clean inside. Saag paneer, samosas, and garlic naan were hot, fresh, and delicious. Others seemed to enjoy the lamb korma and lamb vindaloo. Portions are big enough for two meals if you don't have a huge appetite. Vegetarian dishes are $13-15, meat dishes are $14-18, so prices are pretty on par with most Indian places. There are a lot of coupons available online too!

Ankil S.

Yelp
Food: 5 stars Ambience and space: 3 stars Staff: 5 stars Cook time: Normal Prices: 3 stars This is a new place in Somerville. I would say this is one of the best place I have been to for Indian food. Menu options are limited (I like that) and simple. Unlike other restaurants who offer 15 paneer subzis with hardly any difference in each one, this one has only two paneer options. One of the very few places where two subzis are completely different instead of having same base for all subzis available. This place was more like a home cooked food. Loved it. Staff was good. I would cut a star because of ambience and size. A little expensive for what its worth but I would visit this again.

Nicole C.

Yelp
This is a NEW family owned Indian Restaurant with delicious food. I'm gluten and dairy free so even at Indian food restaurants I tend to get restricted to vegan options. Dilreet, the friendly and informative woman who answered the phone was able to explain how they could turn korma and tikka masala into dairy free using onion base or soy milk and could explain those options. I rarely find people who have the patience to answer my questions and who can accommodate so easily. This place is different. I chose the Chicken Tikka Masala with soy milk and it was delicious and the consistency was awesome. This is definitely worth the drive the next time I am flying in or out of Boston Logan Airport. Another tip if you aren't from around here. Across the street is Goodyear Tire. If you pull in there and go to the end you can cross the street into the parking behind Citizens Bank. If they are closed, you can park there.

Christopher M.

Yelp
Good place--I had a tikka masala and a malai kofta. Nice and rich, balanced flavors. On point with butter and spiciness. Clean space, and nice people working.

Andrew S.

Yelp
This past weekend I went into Masala Square to try out their lunch special named "Lunch Square Meal" that I have seen flyers all around Union Square for. I ordered food at the counter and in a short amount of time the lunch special was brought out. As part of the lunch special which is $9.99 + tax you get three squares; an appetizer, a main, and a side. I went with a vegetable samosa as my appetizer, chicken tikka masala as my main, and garlic naan as my side. The food was delicious and I feel I definitely got my value worth for the $10ish dollars I paid for lunch.

Justine J.

Yelp
Not great I'm sorry Staff super sweet cute shop good location though The mango lassi is probably the worst I've had, the biryani was very oily

Rishabh K.

Yelp
I had Chicken Biryani. I would say it wasn't good. I had better biryanis. Even with high spices it was bland for me. The peas were undercooked. It was more of a chicken pulao rather than Chicken Biryani. The raita was good though. The menu doesn't have much options and is very limited. Quantity was enough for one person but I felt with a dollar less one can get good biryani elsewhere. I was disappointed to be honest.

David M.

Yelp
They served food at the festival in Union and for $8 all you got was a scoop of masala sauce with 2 little cubes of chicken floating in it over a palm sized disc. They couldn't spare 10 cents worth of rice to make it even 1/4th of a meal. Stingy. They added hot pepper relish over the top of the whole thing too without asking.

Marissa S.

Yelp
Ordered the paneer vindaloo (mild), lamb curry (spicy), the samosas, and got a free garlic naan. Food was very good and not too expensive for such high quality. Food was ready before the pickup time even started. Wonderful and kind staff. Would definitely come here again. *note: mild is probably more like a medium spice level

SKhan K.

Yelp
The tea was pathetic. Worse than home made tea and not strong enough. Won't be going there again

Jarin C.

Yelp
Every time I eat food from Masala Square, I'm blown away by how absolutely flavorful and balanced all the rich spices work together for a satisfying, hearty, truly moving meal. The classics like biryanis, tikka masala, mushroom mataar, aloo gobi, vindaloo, palak paneer are all spectacular. Also, their super spicy is desi spicy, so if you're down to sweat a little or take a few lassi breaks, then you will love it. Everything is lovingly simmered and every spoonful shows off their generous use of aromatics and spices. Also, the family that runs this place is the best. Super friendly & helpful and a joy to give business to in the neighborhood. We're so glad you're here. If you're in Union Square and looking for a heartwarming meal, Masala Square will not disappoint. They're worth driving out to if you're craving for some desi comfort food. Keep calm and curry on!
