30 Essential Restaurants to Know in Birmingham, Alabama

"Massaman Thai Kitchen hides in plain sight, a few doors down from the Publix at Vestavia City Center. Shoppers trickle in and place to-go orders to pick up after a weeknight grocery run. The space itself is modest, but don’t be fooled—Massaman offers some of the best Thai soups and curries in Birmingham." - Sarra Sedghi

Google
They have amazing flavor in their dishes! We tried the Pad Thai, the Pot Stickers and the hot and sour soup (Tom Yum). Everything was delicious! I've found my new favorite Thai restaurant in Alabama. Now the hunt continues as Surin West disappointed us last time with rice all over the bottoms of our appetizer plates they brought to our table not to mention we waited about 15 minutes and never saw a waiter or waitress 🤷🏻‍♀️ second time that happened and this Masaman Thai restaurant didn't disappoint! The service is order and seat yourself. Don't expect fancy atmosphere but definitely get your Thai here to go if you're busy.

Google
Great new find. I had been craving Thai food for quite some time and wanted to try a new place. The restaurant is quite small; I was not expecting the right seating arrangement. Due to the close proximity of others, I wish they had music playing because the restaurant is very quiet so you can be all up in others conversations. You go to the counter and order and pay for your food. Get your own drink so no one is really waiting on you. I kind of liked that though. The food was excellent! Perfectly spicy and flavorful. We ordered the crab angels, the shrimp soup, pineapple fried rice with a shrimp, and the chili Thai basil leaf with beef. If you have a cold this will clear you right up. I already want

Google
Best Thai I’ve had in Birmingham. The pangang curry is 11/10. Chefs kiss.. As well as the Pad Siew oh my gosh so good.

Google
Great hole in the wall place. U want fine dining it is not. Small only 7 tables and most are 2 tops. But food is killer and portions are generous for the money. Delicious coconut soup served with lunch as well

Google
Food is great, especially pad thai and basil rolls. Never had a bad dish from here. Prices are good. Service is prompt and efficient. There's not much to say about the restuarant atmosphere- it's compact inside, pleasant with basic tables/chairs but not a fancy dine in experience. Less of a dine in spot, more of a pickup or online delivery go-to for takeaway for you to go home and stream Paramount + and chow down.

Google
An unassuming gem! This place could easily go unnoticeable but this is a perfect example of letting your actions speak for themselves. I've gone twice in two months. First time I went I tried the masaman chicken (lunch) and the Potstickers. Masaman chicken was good and flavorful, the pot stickers with panang sauce left a lot to be desired. I've had much better pot stickers. Overall good experience. Second time I went was today. I had the Pad Thai (Lunch) asked if I could make it spicy. They give you the option of doing 1 - 4 peppers, representing spice level. I asked for 1 pepper just to gauge. I also ordered the Egg Rolls. First, these egg rolls were amazing. So full of flavor and fresh. I don't remember when I have ever had egg rolls this good. Most egg rolls taste bland and have some kind of bland meat like pork added in. These egg rolls added no meat, I'm a huge meat lover so I was nervous, but these are the best egg rolls in Alabama. Hands down. If they had shrimp egg rolls, I'd get them at least twice a week. Amazingly delicious. Lastly, the Pad Thai lunch, when I first bit into the chicken the rush of flavor I got was amazing. If I had a complaint, it's that I wish they gave me more meat, specifically shrimp and chicken, but I was left full and wanting more. Spice level one was nice, not really spicy, just a nice little punch. I'll be trying level 2 next time. Based on my two trips and experiences ... Solid 9.1 / 10

Google
Great, fresh food, friendly service, convenient location. So far I've tried the Chicken Masaman Curry and Thai Egg Rolls - very tasty; looking forward to trying more dishes!

Google
Amazing food! If you like hot food it's hot. I would have liked my chili eggplant hotter but it was still amazing! Thanks to JP(?) From the Airport Enterprise car rental exchange desk for the recommendation.

Yelp
We had been driving all day and were looking for a place to get good food quickly and close to our hotel. Read the reviews here on Yelp and decided to try Masaman. I called to see if you could dine in. The lady said yes but they only have 7 tables - which was just great to us-won't be noisy. Excellent choice! We shared the beef and vegetables and it was fabulous! The beef was tender and the veggies were cooked to perfection! Service was great and friendly as well. So happy we chose this restaurant!

Yelp
Ordered take out from here. The tofu coconut soup is delicious. The parang curry and massaman curry spicy was spicy I should have gone milder. The tofu was fried not baked. Large portion sizes

Yelp
I went for a quick bite to eat. It wasn't too busy so I was able to get a table that was out of the way. I am on a paleo type diet, but I didn't want to miss out on my favorite Thai restaurant for lunch! So I ordered the mixed veggie with chicken without the rice. It was so good, the veggies were crisp and took on the flavors of the sauce. There were carrots, broccoli, cabbage, green beans and sprouts. It was really tasty! I'm glad I was able to try something new. As always the owners were super friendly and know me when I come in.

Yelp
I was in the area and read some great reviews. I went with the Pad Thai and Crab Angels with homemade sweet and sour sauce. The Pad Thai had plenty of chicken and a few pieces of shrimp. Overall decent portion size but the sauce was too sweet for my liking. The customer service was good as I was greeted by the front and back staff. I will return but try something different.

Yelp
This was my first time trying this place, and I wasn't disappointed. I ordered from the lunch menu and the portion was just right. The lunch prices are very reasonable. Each entree comes with their delicious coconut soup. I really enjoyed the Pad Thai as well. Service was friendly and fast.

Yelp
I been wanting to try this place for a while, well I tried it for the first time. When I say I have no regrets, I have NONE. I ordered the Panang curry & spring rolls, & it was delicious !! It was lunch time, but the servings were fulfilling. This will be my new Thai place from now on.

Yelp
Coconut SoupCrab Angel Very good! One of our favorite places for take out. The staff are always so nice and fast

Yelp
I was in the mood for some Thai food after work and I was definitely impressed with what I got from Masaman. I walked in to place a to go order and was greeted immediately by super friendly people. I got the pad Thai and tofu coconut soup. It did not take long at all to receive my order. It smelled amazing and I couldn't wait to get home to have a bite... so I didn't. I opened that up and took a bite in my car because of how good it smelled. When I tell you that it hit the spot-- it was SO good!! My mouth is actually watering now thinking about what I ate several days ago. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Our family has been enjoying Masaman for years...always great food and incredible service with a smile!

Yelp
Love this place! Locally owned, quick, delicious, friendly! Love Panang chicken, spicy Thai noodle and Best coconut soup!

Faith T.

Yelp
The food is good but the service was horrible. I think they were stressed out but they Made me feel uncomfortable. I don't really think i'll order there anymore

Greer W.

Yelp
Always a wonderful, delicious experience! Order is always accurate, hot, and consistent! Thank you Masaman!

Yelp
Our go to for Thai. Food is always fresh and flavorful. We always pickup to go or have it delivered but always ready on time.

Yelp
This is an updated review. When you walk by Masaman Thai Kitchen you may not think it looks like much. Located next to Publix, a hair salon and a 24-hour Urgent Care for kids, you may even miss it. But this place is a hidden gem with really good Thai food. Since I last visited, they have expanded and there is a larger dining area. It is still very simple but it is convenient if you have the time and want to eat in, and it makes the restaurant feel more like a restaurant rather than a carry-out place. Some of my favorites are the Masaman Curry with Chicken, the Pad Thai and the pineapple fried rice with vegetables. I am not much of a sauce person and sometimes I steer clear of Thai restaurants because of this, but Masaman has something for everyone. Also, the service is really good and you don't have to wait long for your food, and there is plenty of parking because it is located in a strip mall.

Yelp
Hidden gem! Best Coconut soup! Great and quick service! Best for takeout. Not a lot of seating, but good for smaller parties. Food was tasty!

Yelp
Comfort food!! I absolutely love this place. The coconut soup that is served with the lunch specials is some of my fave soup in the entire world. If you are looking for delicious and comforting warm food, this is the spot! I have had just about everything on the menu. The spice levels are very true to what the menu says. I have never been unhappy with what I have ordered (be it sushi or hot noodles or chili eggplant... Or just hot soup!). If you like curry or Thai dishes, trust me, you want to try this place out!

Yelp
I'm shook. How have I never been here before? This is crazy good Thai food in the heart of Vestavia Hills. Owner was so nice and definitely played a part of me enjoying my first visit. I'll probably be back next week to try something new!

Ivy T.

Yelp
They were okay, the food was okay but the customer service wasn't the best. Macy was kind of rude towards me and acted as if she didn't wanna talk to me.

Yelp
Thai Fresh Basil Rolls are absolutely delicious from here. I don't like the plum sauces so I asked for sweet and sour sauce and the chili paste. I take the chili paste and add it to the sweet and sour sauce and create one hell of a sauce for the rolls. It's sweet but and as spicy as you make it and perfect for the Rolls. My sister started me to mixing these two together here and it's phenomenal. The Coconut Tofu Soup was delicious to me. That says a lot. I despise all things coconut and creamy. It wasn't very creamy which is what I was prepared for and I wasn't going to eat it bcus I don't like creamy sauces or soups. It was spicy and flavorful and that made the coconut milk not overpowering. The little tofu dices were a good addition to the mushrooms as well. I'd order the soup itself again that's just how much I enjoyed it. I was pleasantly surprised by the soup that's offered with the lunch specials. I had the Lunch: Pad Thai with no peanuts and extra sauce. I don't like dry noodles no matter what cuisine they come from. They gave me extra sauce which I loved. With takeout you never know what you're going to get. This was a good dish. They only thing I didn't like was how sweet it was. It was not what I'm used to eating where Pad Thai is concerned. I can't wait to try more from here.

Stephanie C.

Yelp
No frills location but true Thai cuisine that did not disappoint. A great lunch in an out-of-the-way shopping center. Good value for vey tasty authentic food that was fresh and spicy. Only a handful of tables available. Service was quick and friendly.

Yelp
Good food and nice employee . Everything is yummy!!! Small spot but you can always order to go and enjoy the food with your family. Will come back

Yelp
I love this spot. I always order the tofu tikka masala, it's probably one of my favorite places. The staff is always nice when I call. It doesn't take long for the food to be ready, though they cook everything to order.

Yelp
I loved this place. Always looking for good Thai food and I am so glad I found this place. It's a small and cozy restaurant. I ordered spicy beef salad, panang curry, yellow curry and my ultimate favorite drunken noodles. Asked all of the items to be Thai hot ( I love spices) everything was savory and flavors we amazing. I can't wait to go back again. Lunch portions were great and allowed us to taste few dishes. I also loved the coconut soup.

Terri M.

Yelp
Looking for great Thai food and we found it. Everyone raves about their Penang Curry and they were right - a very tasty curry! Also tried the chicken chili eggplant which was full of flavor and just the right amount of spice.

Yelp
The take out service is great at Masaman. I decided to change my take out order once I got to the restaurant and it was no problem at all. I was grateful because I really wanted the Masaman curry since I've had it on a previous occasion. It doesn't look like much but it packs a very mild and hearty flavor. The portion size is great considering that it costed $14. I can easily get two meals out of it which I appreciate. I prefer this as a lunch spot since it's less pricy. However, they're only offering pick up services at this time. Overall the curbside service was quick and I really enjoyed my meal. I will definitely be going back.

Hunt C.

Yelp
MUST try Masaman if you like Thai. I have lived in Birmingham my entire life and somehow just discovered this great place. I rarely leave reviews but have to congratulate Masaman's Pineapple Chicken Jasmine Fried Rice. BEST fried rice in Birmingham. Service is also quick and everyone is so friendly too. Consistent top notch quality. 11/10. I used to love Surin's fried rice the best, but Masaman blows that out of the park, for comparison. Also, I'm no "food expert" by any means haha, but I did live in Thailand a few years back and Masaman reminds me of one of my favorite places I ate there. Masaman is tucked away next to Publix on Montgomery Hwy in Vestavia. Go try it!!!!

Manish N.

Yelp
Food was good. Since we ordered takeout couldn't find out about their service. The ambience looked pretty ordinary.
google avatar

Yelp
Great Thai food in an unassuming location! They have gone above and beyond providing safe to go service since the pandemic! Always a wonderful meal!
google avatar

Kelsey R.

Yelp
Best hole in the wall lunch special in town. Can't go wrong with the massaman chicken or pad Thai. I crave it all the time. The lunch specials come with so much food: a full entree, a bowl of rice, and a cup of coconut soup, all for $10. Couldn't say enough good things about this gem of a restaurant.

Yelp
Not your typical dine in restaurant, it's a take out only type restaurant. Service: Great and very friendly. The staff would walk around and ask if the customers are doing okay and whether the food is satisfactory. Not very typical for take out restaurants, but it was very sweet of them to do so. Interior: Simple and clean decor. The restaurant is small and can hold up to about 15 guests. There are tables and chairs available if customers want to stay to dine in. Portions: Lunch specials are designed for one person and will definitely fill you up! These come with the entree, rice, and coconut tofu soup. Masaman Chicken (lunch special): Delicious and quite fresh. This curry-like dish has chunks of carrots and chicken slices smothered with the sauce. There were also 3 thinly sliced avocado and plenty of cashews on top as garnish, which makes the dish extra colorful. The sauce is very flavorful and has a very small hint of spicy to it. Pot stickers with panang sauce: Perfect pairing with the sauce. Coconut tofu soup: It's different from other coconut soups that I have tried before. It's a bit less flavorful, but still pretty good. Tofu on pad thai: I did not try the pad thai but I did get a taste of the tofu. It was nicely fried and seasoned very well. The tofu tasted sweet and savory, a taste that I have not tried before. It was satisfying. It was my first time here and now on my list of favorites from Birmingham.

Yelp
My favorite to go Thai restaurant. The owner is so sweet she always knows my name and my order. They have good sushi too. The food is always piping hot and flavorful. I love getting the pineapple chicken fry rice

Yelp
We just finished an amazing dinner at Masaman Thai Kitchen. They had a soft opening to roll out their new sushi offerings. Everything was amazing and original and will have a big impact on the local sushi scene. Imagine the perfect marriage of Japanese and Thai cuisine. We started with tuna poke that was nicely spiced and contained tomato and avocado and was highlighted with scents of orange. Next up was a beef roll that was filled with crab and topped with lightly seared beef. My favorite was the komé which was flash fried sushi rice topped with avocado, jalapeño and spicy crab. It was wonderful and I'll certainly try it again. Huge points for the machi chili. Beautiful tuna in a light broth of soy, miso, lime and Thai chilis. It was bloody amazing and is a must try. Last up was a July roll. It was a spicy crab roll, deep fried and topped with masago, eel sauce and crunchies. Everything was amazing and it was a real treat to be invited to this event. Run, run, run to try the new sushi menu. This is absolutely going to become a hot spot for amazing, fresh and original sushi.

Yelp
The staff was friendly and the food amazing! I love Thai Cuisine and fell in love with it long ago. The Thai restaurant back home is amazing so when I am out traveling I always look for local Thai Restaurants. Masaman is the only one that had seasoned the food the way I like it. I always ask for native Thai Spice and no other place has ever used the seasoning I am used to. The spice that they use is the perfect blend of flavor and spice that I am accustomed to from the Thai Restaurant back home. The only downside was on the dessert side. Back home they have a Mango Sticky rice that is amazing but I was told they only do Sticky Rice here as an Entree. A very minute negative to me personally. Anytime I come back through the Birmingham area Masaman will be on my list of places to stop and I would recommend them to anyone that loves Thai Cuisine.

Yelp
Writing this during COVID-19 quarantine. Called at 7:55pm and was told they close at 8 but would be happy to make our meal for pickup and wait for us to come pick it up. Ordered the tofu pad thai 2 star spice and tofu pad prik. Our food was excellent..better then when we went in to eat the 1st time. Really impressed by the impeccable service and delicious food!
google avatar

Emily G.

Yelp
Excellent food, prompt and kind service, and reasonable prices. Lots of good choices on the menu. In a shopping center so the inside isn't glamorous or anything, but it's clean.
google avatar

Sam B.

Yelp
Everything on the menu is great. Chili Eggplant, Chicken Larb, Spicy Beef Salad, and the Yellow Curry are some of my favorites. It's surprising that food this good comes from a strip mall in Vestavia. But it does! The ambiance isn't great, I admit, but the food more than makes up for it. Ample parking. Reasonably priced.
google avatar

Yelp
This is the real deal when it comes to Thai food. Don't expect much in regard to ambiance (in fact in the future I will call ahead so it's ready when I arrive), but expect much in regard to flavor. We visited around 5:30 on a Friday. Walked up to the counter, looked over the menu, and placed our order. The woman working the counter was quick and efficient, but maintained a friendly demeanor. After we ordered the phone rang pretty much non-stop and there was a steady stream of people for take out. It's clearly the place to be. Now for the food. The coconut soup was top notch; creamy and sweet with just a bit of kick. The Chilli Thai Basil Leaf Chicken was on point. It had two peppers for a spice rating (the highest was three); there was just enough kick (at least for me). We also ordered the Pad Thai. It was okay, but a little too sweet for my taste. The portions are large. Everything could be shared. I will definitely return.

Matt R.

Yelp
Coconut soup is dynamite! Also the masa man chicken and the pad Thai were extremely good!
google avatar

Max F.

Yelp
That's interesting. Due to its layout and location, you would guess this place is just a fast food Thai sort of thing. That couldn't be more wrong! Atmosphere, service, and other commodities are all N/A. Food? ...terrific! I and my wife really like Thai and we always struggled with finding anything good here around. We loved it, and we went back many times. Very nice little restaurant!

Courtney R.

Yelp
We had lunch today for the first time here! It was amazing. The staff was as amazing as the food was. I had the Masaman Curry with the coconut soup! Outstanding. My husband had the Pad Thai & he licked his plate clean! We also had the Thai egg rolls'. So Delicious. I would definitely recommend eating here!
google avatar

Kareen O.

Yelp
One of the best softshell crab curry I've ever had! The spice was perfect! curry was very flavorful and the crab was very crispy even though I had take out. Very good portion, I can't wait to try the other dishes on the menu!
google avatar

Paul C.

Yelp
I tried Masaman for lunch on Friday, and I was quite impressed with the food. However, don't expect sit down service or much ambiance. This is a small restaurant with very limited seating. Only six or seven tables for two, although you can easily pull tables together. You place your order at the counter and they call you when it is ready. Lunch was served in styrofoam to-go containers, and utensils are cheap, disposable plastic. The small dining room was uncomfortably hot because the summer sun was beating down on the glass store front. Masaman offers approximately ten different lunch entrees, and all come with a small bowl of Coconut soup. The soup had fresh mushrooms and tofu. I expected the soup to be a little sweet, but instead it had a tom yum-like sourness, along with being very spicy. My friends and I liked the soup. I ordered the Chilli Eggplant dish with chicken, and I thought it was very good. Fresh eggplant, bell pepper, onions, and sliced chicken breast are prepared in a chilli oil sauce that was flavorful and spicy. Two scoops of white rice helped offset the heat, but not enough to stop my nose from running or for beads of sweat from forming on my forehead. Rachel ordered the Panang Chicken, Matthew ordered Pad Thai, and David ordered Pad Spicy Noodles with Shrimp. Everyone enjoyed their selections. The Spicy noodle dish looked especially delicious. We also shared an order of the Pineapple Fried Rice, which we thought it was just okay. It had a curry flavor, and only a hint of pineapple. The lunch portions were generous, and reasonably priced. The restaurant is not set up well for groups or a family dinner, but is great for lunch or take home orders. I definitely recommend and plan to come back soon.
google avatar

Jen J.

Yelp
The Pad Thai and coconut soup are as good as they look in the pictures. Called ahead for lunch and it was ready in the time they said it would be. Everything was on point flavor wise. I recommend getting spicy. Two peppers is a true medium.
google avatar

Rob S.

Yelp
BE WARNED!!! The hot pepper ratings provided on the menu are accurate!! Two peppers menu items come at you swinging! Tons of amazing flavor, but there is a heat infused punch to the senses. I love spicy food and I love it even more when it's done well. Meaning has some flavor to it as well, not just an overload of heat and no flavor. The seating area is very small so be prepared to go to an early lunch or dinner if you want to eat there. They have eight tables with 2 chairs at each. Very limited seating, but it looks like they are well equipped for take out orders. Several people came in and grabbed theirs to go. I had the Spicy Beef Salad. Included with the order is white rice and coconut soup. Coconut soup was on par with any of the other places I have had it. The rice was really good mixed in with the spicy sauce found under the salad. Great food! I want to come back and try the more expansive dinner menu soon!

Yelp
Went here a few times, and while I'm generally not a big fan of Thai food, I will say that everything I've had here has been pretty good. Got the green curry the first time, and the masaman curry the second time. Good lunch spot, quick service, very nice staff, and fairly inexpensive. For me, with these sorts of dishes, it really comes down to how well prepared the protein is. I can say that in both instances the chicken that I got was tender and delicious and able to be cut easily with a plastic fork. No gristly bits, no big chunks of fat. Both the green curry and the masaman sauces were flavorful and clung well to the chicken. I'll be back again for sure.
google avatar

Joshua L.

Yelp
Lunch here is amazing! Got the Spicy Thai Noodle. Included a Tom Kha soup for a starter--good appetite opener. The noodles were slightly sweet, tangy, and just spicy enough. Chicken was cooked well and the vegetables were fresh. Would recommend this place for lunch at a great price. Will be back for dinner!

Yelp
I have been meaning to try this place for a while. I have seen the reviews and pictured it in my mind. What I came across as far as ambiance was totally different than what is in my mind. But the food hit that high expectation well! We walked in and saw a sign about carry out only and no dine in. But when we went to order, they asked if we wanted to dine there. So a little confused on that. I am very familiar with this shopping center since we lived just a couple of miles away. So now knowing the location, I'm sure I would have pictured the much smaller dining area before my visit. The staff was exceptionally friendly and very interested in making sure that we enjoyed everything. We got the Thai egg rolls, pad thai, and chicken curry (masaman). All things that we really enjoy at other Thai places. Everything we had was better than our typical Thai carry out spot. Making us wish these were scattered at various spots around Birmingham too. I will definitely be back. Might be a good lunch spot to try and actually eat in. But as far as "dinner" experience goes, this might be a takeout spot in my book.
google avatar

Natasha S.

Yelp
The place is hidden in this plaza in Vestavia Hills. The food is amazing. You can select your spice level. We got the shrimp coconut soup which was so good. The Panang shrimp was just as tasty and one of the beat I've had in Birmingham. The shrimp noodles were also very good. The serving size is quite large. It's a must try place.

Yelp
I went to this restaurant with my family. I'm not a fan of Thai food in Birmingham. However this is where my family wanted to go. An authentic Thai dish that I have always loved is Moo Tod. I have always requested this dish at five restaurants to see how authentic they are. This was the first Birmingham Thai restaurant in 20 years that knew what I was requesting. I ordered the Chili Eggplant. The other members of my Family ordered the Pad Siew and Massaman Curry. The waitress was great. She got our drinks out quickly and the food came out steaming hot. Once we had allowed them to cool and dressed them up as we liked we dug in. All I can say is "Fantastic". My dinner was excellent the eggplant was cooked perfectly and the flavour of it all was great. The sauce was not watery but thick and rich. I also sampled the other dishes and they too tasted wonderful. I am definitely going back to chow down on some Massaman Curry. I loved it.
