This converted masseria is renowned as one of the best hotels in Puglia region of south Italy.
The masseria dates back to 16th century, with most of the original features preserved. It started as a local farm and for some time its tower served as an observation base of Maltese knights overlooking the sea to spot the Turkish invaders and Saracen pirates.
The tower suite I stayed at is styled in a highly traditional manner and, as well as antiquated furniture and old tapestries, it contains a genuine fire place with the fire wood, which we used to light up every evening. It also offers views toward the sea shore and the surrounding countryside full of olive farms.
The main hotel is located about a mile from the sea shore, but they have their private beach that you can drive to. There is also a sizeable swimming pool and a sunbathing area at the masseria.
They also have one of the best restaurants in Puglia, offering the traditional local dishes prepared up to the highest standard, with only the best quality local seafood and other ingredients.
The masseria is located in the middle of Puglia countryside, surrounded by various traditional farms. This makes a stay here particularly intriguing. After all, there are very few places left in Western Europe where people grow their own tomatoes and potatoes.
The closest substantial town is Fasano, just a five minutes drive away, which, despite the relatively remote location, offers some good restaurants and designer boutiques. Further up the hills, there is a famous town of Alberobello, renowned for its unique trulli houses.
There is also one of the region's best golf courses at the sea shore just a few miles away, as well as an executive course within a walking distance to practice on.
Overall, this luxurious hotel offers a highly comfortable and relaxing atmosphere within the unique location in south Italy and is especially perfect for a calm get away from the big city environment. The prices are indeed fairly high, especially by the local standards, but in my opinion it is definitely worth it.
