A Guide to the Ultimate Staycation in Portland’s Old Town-Chinatown | Eater Portland

"I strolled around Lan Su Chinese Garden, a serene inner-city oasis built in collaboration with Suzhou, and at the garden’s recently revamped Yun Shui teahouse I sat down to gaiwan tea service amid peaceful surroundings where the tea ambassador can provide guidance from a menu of over 20 Chinese and Taiwanese teas; the teahouse also serves wonton soup, congee, and Chinese pastries." - Janey Wong

When you’re in Suzhou, you’ve got to visit the Master of the Nets Garden. It captures the beauty of southern China’s quiet vitality and traditional Chinese culture. It’s one of the smaller gardens in the city, but very delicate and elegant. Go on a sunny weekday if you can, or book the night tour. The garden is more beautiful in the daytime, but at night it has its own charm, with a guided tour and live performances.

"Master of the nets garden" and my way on foot to it - a few outdated, so far season mismatched pics. It's hard to believe, that this site (today listed as a UNESCO World Heritage) was constructed in the 12th century! Garden's founder was inspired by the simplicity and solitude of a Chinese fisherman's life, depicted in philosophical writings. Six hundred years later another owner, who referred to himself as a fisherman, renovated the place, having retained its spirit, and gave the garden a name: Master of the Nets Garden. Years ago, thanks to this place, I was introduced to Chinese classic art of garden design. I can tell, why it is considered to be one of the finest examples. Beautifully sculpted synthesis of art, nature, landscape architecture and scenery creates such a unique atmosphere, which literally puts a visitor inside a masterpiece. Strangers, who by chance got into my shots, also blended seamlessly.

Beautiful garden steeped in history. I went to the night show. The garden is beautiful and the performances were good. Unfortunately, I didn't understand a word the guide said but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Definitely go if you understand Mandarin.

It's worth a visit if you are already in Suzhou. Friendly staff helped us when we had difficulty getting AliPay to work. Many courtyards and a central pond, Nice tea cafe to relax on a hot day. Impressive antique furniture.

The night tour is a must-go! The tour covers small Chinese opera, dance and play at each garden and room. Which shows how old owner family enjoy their life back in the days.

Nice gardens, the smaller version of the humble administrator ones.

Every time when I where here it was a nice experience. This is a pretty good place where to relax for a while and see the traditional places from ancient times. How life looks like a few hundred years ago. Inside is also a toilet and a wending machine for some cold drinks. So if you are hungry, eat rather outside. Thank you🤩
