We're lucky in Berkeley/Oakland to have some passionate artisans in both roasting and brewing of coffee. Young Sun represents the passion, care, and craft at Masterpiece Coffee.
If you're a coffee normie, he's humble enough not to inundate you with the multitudes of decisions he's making in the crafting of your pourover cup, however if he finds out you're a coffee nerd, too (and if there's not other people waiting), he's enthusiastic about engaging in discussion and sharing his thoughts on various topics.
I was so delighted to have a pourover of Lao Xu Zhai coffee from Yunnan, China, brewed by him. It was a work of art. Between the care of crafting the water, water temperature, the grind, the brew technique. The result was a bombastic explosion of guava, berries, wine, spice with a backbone of acidity that balanced out a delicate sweetness. THAT was a very impressive pourover.
To get a chance to chat it up with someone else who shares that passion of precision craft—as well as a roaster, too—was a delight.
The others in my party got the "Saffron", which is a black tea latte made with oat milk that mixes in both plum and saffron. I sampled a sip and can easily say it'll delight anyone wanting something that's more interesting than your typical sugar milk latte drink at most cafes.
I love the creativity and craft here, and am already looking forward to the next visit.
