"Washington Street in South Norwalk has seen a lot of restaurant openings (and closings) over the past decade, but Match is the neighborhood favorite that’s always stuck around. It’s probably due to their crowd-pleasing seasonal menu of shareable small plates that’ll actually fill you up, including pizzettes cooked in a wood-fired oven and a raw bar selection with oysters freshly harvested from the Long Island Sound that surrounds South Norwalk. Their cocktail menu might be even better than their food—the purple spicy margarita is the best (and the strongest) one we’ve had in Fairfield County. Just keep that in mind before you order another round. photo credit: Sam Schwab photo credit: Sam Schwab photo credit: Sam Schwab" - Ciera Velarde

I went mid-week and had lovely dinner. Delicious meal, beautiful lighting and ambiance and a noticeably attentive staff. I will definitely add this gem to a great date night restaurant!

Google
The Octopus and Garlic Bread were incredible - especially the garlic bread dip! Other then those, the calamari is clearly frozen and underwhelming, the tiramisu is boxed and not made fresh, and the pizza was disappointing.

We have been looking forward to eating here for months. My husband grew up in West Port, and we were looking for somewhere new and snazzy to get reservations when we visited this week. The best thing about this place is the food, but before I share those details I want to brag on the staff. From the moment we walked in, we were treated with so much professionalism and kindness, as well as enthusiasm and expertise. They have really great wait staff, hosts, etc. Everyone we interacted with provided the highest level of service. The wine list is impressive and I was thrilled to find a super Tuscan at a reasonable price on the menu (it was insanely good!). But the food is the real star here. These dishes were just incredible. Flavor was intense, seasoning was perfection, and the temperature was exactly on point. I would not have changed one thing. I highly recommend the chicken entree. The restaurant itself is spotlessly clean and we got great seats by the windows up front, which were perfect for people watching the street traffic. The place has a nice vibe of contemporary decoration mixed with functional classics. I do have to note that in other cities, I have paid 2-3 times the price for a meal of this caliber. The pricing of the menu is so reasonable. This is great food, at a great price, in a beautiful atmosphere, being prepared and served by very talented foodies. It was an amazing date night spot.

Google
Match had wonderful staff, atmosphere, food and wine. Match was the perfect spot to celebrate my wedding anniversary. The experience was memorable and I can’t wait to return!

We went with friends on a weekend evening and we all liked the food. My son really enjoyed the fries! The bathroom needed some attention. But everyone had a good time!

Google
Severely over cooked 60$ steak and then they have the nerve to add 20% tip to the bill so you have no choice but to tip what a joke. Looking for a great place try the Oak&Almond it's amazing

Google
We had an incredible meal last night at Match. The steak and fries were amazing. The tuna tartare is the best. We sat at the bar and enjoyed our drinks and talking to the attentive staff. We will be back soon!

Google
The arugula salad is to die for! All the food is delicious and our server was excellent, he has been there for 25 years and is a true testament to what a great establishment they have. Have been back since for Valentine’s Day and ate at the bar. I recommend table service for a greater experience!

Yelp
Food is always good. We tend to always order similar things, I guess habit. The calamari, which we didn't take pictures of is delicious, especially if you are a fan of olives. Cocktails and mocktails are amazing! The spicy margarita is perfect. Service is amazing. Our server Peter was having a great day because he was top notch. Gratuity is included, and I didn't mind when you have such great service. It's such a chill place and a wonderful vibe, we will be back.

Yelp
This is the only place to be !! Went to a fabulous Find Raiser for The Circle of Care. One problem pair of load obnoxiously rude woman. The tried to bully the tables around them. And then the Chef Matt Storch. You know end is enough. Stay home abuse your family. Stephen and Gary

Yelp
This review is based on my firsthand experience as a customer of this business on May 24, 2024, and on many other occasions since moving to Norwalk in 2010. Match has anchored the SoNo restaurant district in Norwalk since 1999 while countless others have come and gone. These's a reason. His name is Matt Storch. You just can't go wrong here. Discovered Clos de los Siete on the Matxh wine list. This outstanding Argentine mostly Malbec pairs perfectly with the Osso Bucco. The correct name for this business is Match. Just like it says on the pizza box. While it's true Match is a restaurant, the word "Restaurant" is not part of the name. Kind of like how I'm a person, but the word "person" is not part of my name. It's not really complicated , yet somehow Yelp got it wrong even for this very well known Connecticut institution.

Yelp
Walking up and down Washington St in SONO trying decide on a restaurant for dinner with a friend and this place was bustling! Very busy! For us, that was a good sign and a good choice on a whim. Food was flavorful. Garlic bread had fresh sliced garlic.m served with a ricotta spread. Pizza dough was light and crispy.

Yelp
tl;dr - Best gnocchi I've had in my life! Which says a lot, because I've tried many disappointing gnocchi. The bistecca alla fiorentina is also delicious but it's a lot of food for 2 people. Carpetbaggers - 6 fried Norwalk oysters with truffle cream, truffled steak tartare, and truffle aioli. As someone who doesn't usually enjoy oysters, these made me want to grab seconds. (10/10) Tuna tartare - Comes on top of a large cracker which is a bit tough to cut, and is drizzled with sweet soy and an avocado sauce. It had a bit too much sweet soy sauce for my taste. (8/10) Octopus frites - Braised and charred octopus with fried red potatoes. Solid dish, I'm just not the biggest octopus fan. (7/10) Greek salad - Lettuce, diced tomatoes, and feta cheese, served on a warm spanakopita (Greek spinach pie with feta cheese). It's a nice salad, but it doesn't compare with the other dishes I tried. (8/10) Bistecca alla Fiorentina - 60 oz Porterhouse, served with broccoli, mashed potatoes, pearl onions, and a bordelaise sauce. It says it's for 2 people, but it's so much food that it's really for 3-4. So delicious if you can find people to share it with! (10/10) Gnocchi - Gnocchi is usually my least favorite type of pasta. I'm not a fan of their texture, and how they get stuck to the roof of your mouth. But this gnocchi dish was my favorite of the night and probably the best gnocchi I've ever had. They're tossed with peas, mushrooms, spicy Italian sausage, thyme, shallot and cream. The flavor and texture was heavenly. (10/10) Strawberry rhubarb crisp - Warm fruit topped with an oat crumble, served with pistachio gelato. Delicious way to end the meal. (9/10)

Yelp
Delicious cuisine. The place is so nice and the people who work there are so respectful and polite and I would recommend it.

Yelp
Perfect date night spot. Food and service is always the best! Reasonably priced for what you get.

Rick S.

Yelp
Good food; noisy; okay service. It is a good, casual restaurant smack in the middle of SONO. Bar is way back...

Jeff S.

Yelp
Wonderful food and ambience. Eat at the bar. Excellent bartenders and awesome cocktails. A bit pricy but worth it.

Jess B.

Yelp
Incredible food and service! The most delicious lobster role and to carpetbagger oysters were absolutely amazing! I really enjoyed the watermelontini. Desserts were delicious as well! Our server was the best I have seen in a long time with perfect suggestions. It's also a cool speaker easy beautiful vibe. I definitely recommend eating here if in Norwalk!

Natalie L.

Yelp
I came here for my birthday last year, it was fun. Cocktails were delicious and the food was outstanding. Serivce lagged a bit but it was so busy and we were a table of 14. Ambiance was modern posh, perfect for birthday celebrations. Can't wait to go back !

Rodrigo G.

Yelp
Excellent service, food is great & ambiance is magnificent The wine list also has a great variety. Make sure to make reservation

Emma R.

Yelp
We had a gift certificate here and so glad it encouraged us to try! The oysters were top 5 best things we have ever eaten. The flavors hit all in the right order at the right times. The farm salad was nice and the latke was a nice surprise. We also got the steak and fries, and ravioli which were all good. It got very busy on a Friday so a reservation is a must. Even though it was busy the food came fast and hot. Parking is easy if you park outback in the metered public parking lot. We will be going back!

Tim B.

Yelp
We had a few different types of Tuna which were excellent. The oysters (carpetbaggers) were excellent and the cookies for dessert were very good but served warm and stacked on top of each other made them difficult to separate. I would look at a different presentation for them if it were my kitchen, but I wouldn't change the recipe! The gnocci with black truffle sauce was very good as was the scallops with veggies. I was served the wrong pasta for my dish. I ate it anyway and it was good but I would have preferred what I ordered. All in all it was a very good experience and we're looking forward to returning and trying some of the other items on this very interesting menu!

Meera S.

Yelp
Easily 5 stars with no hesitation! Dined at Match Restaurant on Wednesday night for a company holiday dinner and wow, did they impress! We had a table of 14 and had the prix fixe menu ($65/person) of shared appetizers, individual salad and entree, and shared dessert. The ambiance was a nice white tablecloth atmosphere with a lively and happening vibe. As we trickled into the restaurant in small batches, our server was taking drink orders and on point with bringing the correct orders despite us making it ever so confusing. Soon after our drinks arrived, the appetizers were served item by item and the servers were quick to pick up empty plates. After trying the 5 different shared nibbles, our salads and then entrees were served. After doing a little poll amongst the table, everyone had only good things to say about the food. I personally loved ALL the food! Dessert platters were served throughout the table and everything was presented well and tasted so yummy. The menu catered to all dietary restrictions and everyone's different needs. There was something for everyone! The presentation and taste of food items, drinks, ambiance and service were all perfect. Literally no qualms. I loved my experience at Match Restaurant!

Yelp
Great food, service and vibe! - good place to hang out with friends. Staff are both excellent, attentive and knowledgeable.

Donald S.

Yelp
When the chef/owner Matt is on site the food is very good. When he's at one of his other sites I have received entrees very salty and special martinis not so special. Ambiance good and the waiter staff is good, especially the Polish/waiter is excellent.

Amber T.

Yelp
I cannot believe how long it has taken me to come here because I cannot stop thinking about the food we had here 5 DAYS AGO!!! I feel like I sound crazy saying this but I have never had such an amazing burger before!! Every bite was so tender it literally feels like it's melting in your mouth and it was soooooo flavorful I didn't need to add any sauce! Truly a one of a kind burger experience and I feel weird saying that haha. Not pictured was the calamari we had as an appetizer which was ALSO super yummmm. My husband who's an olive hater even loved it. Never heard of that combo and it was awesome. You can never go wrong with lobster and pasta but the Angry Lobster hits different and that's all I have to say for this one! Last but not least, I am not a desert person at all but the chocolate chip cookie was OH MY GAHD! Supppeerrrrrrr warm and melty and I loved that it all came deconstructed so you can eat it how you please!! Came with caramelized bananas, peanut butter ice cream, whipped cream, pistachios, and shredded chocolate. Ughhhh such a treat! The service was also great, I appreciate the safety precautions bc of Covid, and our bartender was the best! Pretty sure this is my new fav restaurant in CT and I can't wait to go back!

Patrick B.

Yelp
The food was excellent (I had the swordfish). Great presentation and cooked perfectly. No problems with the service (we had a table of 8), and the atmosphere was amazing.

Eric S.

Yelp
Fantastic restaurant. This place is a step above most similarly priced restaurants in the area. Menu is interesting, wait staff is attentive, and food was excellent. They have inside and outside seating available. For my meal I tried: Local greens - good dressing, latke had good flavor and texture, paired well with cheese on top. Tuna tartar - comes on a cracker, good contrast with the tuna, paired with avocado and soy/ginger flavors. Lobster with black ink pasta - really tender and fresh tasting pasta, seems like it is home made and they give you a lot of lobster with it. The sauce on this was perfectly spiced. Ribeye - cooked to perfection, paired with a sort of creamed corn that was excellent and mushrooms. Overall I look forward to coming back, it was great.

Natalie U.

Yelp
Great restaurant with a creative menu. Something for everyone. We got calamari, burratta and tuna tartare to start as well as truffle gnocchi, lobster roll and angry lobster pasta. We shared a blueberry crisp for dessert. Highly recommend.

Ronald S.

Yelp
Totally enjoyed Match Restaurant in South Norwalk . We were seated in the back bar looking at the Pizza oven , very cozy. the Foie Gras was outstanding , Black Truffle Fettuccini and Spicy Sausage excellent . Matts partner Susan gave us VIP service . Love it .

Madeline C.

Yelp
Had a great time at Match Restaurant this past weekend! Started out with some drinks we got the bees knees and the cordial affair and boy was this drink strong lol. I'd probably try a different drink next time but still good! The highlight of the meal was definitely the tuna tartare which was kindly recommended to us by the owner and it did not disappoint! So delicious and fresh it was a hit with my boyfriend and I. The curry shrimp was good as well as the truffle pasta. The pasta was a bit pricy since it had real truffle so if you're looking to ball out you got your dish! So many other things we wanted to try including the pizza and the steak tartare hoping to come back soon!

Helen P.

Yelp
Food adequate, not fine dining. Service was good. Appearance was clean & bar drinks were very good.

Jack G.

Yelp
Never have I had a better family night out than at Match. Their cocktails are all made to the perfection and I find that since my awesome waiter recommended it, I haven't bought anything but polish vodka, it's the best. All of my food was to die for good. While the atmosphere might feel slightly stuffy, it quickly transitions to a fun mystery that you can't wait to solve. 10/10 would absolutely recommend whether you're a tourist or a Norwalk native!

Nanette D.

Yelp
We celebrated my husband's birthday at Match tonight and it was an amazing experience! Food, service and ambiance were on point! Pick any appetizer and you can't go wrong. The Bistecca alla Fiorentina was melt in your mouth delicious. Also recommend the Osso Bucco and the Black Truffle Gnocchi. Do not pass on dessert! The Tiramisu was the best we've ever had. Last but not least,'the service was perfection! Timely, friendly, personal. Overall, a wonderful experience.

David J.

Yelp
Great place in South Norwalk. Great foood. Everything we ate was tasty The ambiance is exceptional. Next time I want to reserve one of those big purple round sofa tables!! Make reservations!!! This place is jumping! We sat at the back bar with was great but if you need a table. Call ahead

Andres A.

Yelp
Enjoyed a wonderful meal at this establishment. The restaurant's ambiance and decor was very warm and pleasing to the eye. As soon as we entered we were immediately taken to our table and given our menus. The staff was quick to take our drink orders. For our meal we started with the baked clams. They were good but not great. A bit on the chewy side. The night may have not started right but it got better quickly. Our entrees made up for the chewy clams, I had the osso bucco and my gf had the gnocchi. Both of our meals were absolutely delicious. The osso bucco was so flavorful and tender, the meat fell of the bone. To end the night we had the hot chocolate soufflé and it was really good. It was nice and warm with a scoop of vanilla gelato, nice touch! We had been wanting to try this place for some time and it did not disappoint. We will definitely go back to this place.

Shannon B.

Yelp
The restaurant was soo good! the service was great & the food and drinks were awesome

Jon E.

Yelp
Great atmosphere especially for covid times. Food is excellent (except for the bacon appetizer that was just too salty and seasoned for us). Scallops are amazing. Desserts are limited but really good. Try the rhubarb. And the Rita's. Great, great Rita's. Felt very safe inside. It was too cold last weekend to try outdoors but looked good. Only gripe is about the wait. Both times that we have been there in the past few weeks, we had to wait half an hour for a reservation.

Christina D.

Yelp
I wanted to love match so much. I've heard nothing but great things. Unfortunately I was a bit let down. The meal overall felt very rushed. Our entree was out 3 minutes after we had inhaled our appetizers. Carpetbaggers were great. Osso Bucco was pretty good. The margherita pizza was standard but the sauce was surprisingly pretty good. Overall it was a pleasant experience, but I can't say I will be back.

Anthony B.

Yelp
Match is always consistent, delicious and amazing with food, service & wine! Many thanks

Mark W.

Yelp
Tonight is the third time I have visited Match for dinner. Each time I visit I am more impressed with the food. I always order the roast chicken, I can't get over how good it tastes. Others in our party have had fish and osso buco o and told me it was very good. Each appetizer is well crafted with little details that make everything go past tasty to be just delicious. Tonight we found room for dessert and the apple crumble was not too sweet and the perfect ending to a meal.

Chelsea R.

Yelp
I travel frequently for work, and stayed in Norwalk this week as I recently took over the Connecticut region for my office. I decided to head to Match for dinner because I saw the Carpetbaggers appetizer on their menu and was intrigued. Overall, my experience at Match was great and I would definitely head back again the next time I'm in town. It's a bit pricey, but worth the expense. Carpetbaggers app: Pure bliss. Truffle cream, steak tartare, fried oyster. Unctuous and satisfying, worth every penny. Oysters still tasted incredibly moist and fresh, not at all rubbery. Very light, airy batter on them also. Half Chicken Entree: the chicken was cooked very well; very moist and not dried out at all. The basil-lemon marinade on it was yummy also. There was a pan jus with the chicken, but in my opinion the chicken could have been complimented by a sauce that reinforced the marinade. The broccoli was cooked beautifully, and the scalloped potatoes were excellent- creamy, flavorful, but not overly rich. Raspberry "Hot Chocolate" Cake: this was essentially a molten lava cake, but done very well. The inside/molten part of the cake was almost like a cross between a chocolate pudding and a mousse- very yummy. It was a bit rich, as it is intended to be I'm sure, but the cake was complimented well by a Tahitian Vanilla Ice cream, mascarpone cream, and fresh raspberries. It was a well-balanced but indulgent dessert. Worth the calories! Service: save the best for last! My server, Piotre, was wonderful. He was attentive without being intrusive, and was funny, personable and knowledgeable. I think that service can really set a restaurant apart from the pack and elevate the whole experience. Piotre's service did exactly that, and was the cherry on top of a lovely meal. Thank you, Match team!

Ellen E.

Yelp
Always a good experience. Great food, variety and drinks. Burgers only available on Thursday. I love the calamari and salads. Highly recommend

Denise C.

Yelp
20 Years our family has been eating at Match Restaurant. From David's friendly greeting to Chef Matt Storch cooking to perfection and constantly creating new culinary treats, we always look forward to going back. Tonight we had the best porterhouse steak we have ever had. I closed my eyes and thought I was savoring a Peter Lugers steak on their best day. Not only did we get a porterhouse that could feed 3 people, Chef also includes onion balls, broccoli, mashed potatoes and gravy. The steak had natural juices that made this the most delicious steak I have ever had. Taste, texture, juice, smell all combine to make this steak a 10 Plus. All the above was only $92.00, that's incredible! We started the meal with an arugula salad with an amazing hot dressing. Our desserts are old favorites, the best tiramisu with coffee beans dipped in chocolate and home baked chocolate chip cookies garnished with caramelized banana and pistachios. THE BEST PORTERHOUSE STEAK EVER !

Gyaljen Nuru F.

Yelp
We always wanted to go here while in this tea so today is perfect night to check out MATCH !!! Ambience is very awkward seating is here there everywhere, industrial unfinished ceiling with very ugly BAr and there is curb Booth seating on the back. Bathrooms are Downstairs. Food is Okay just average( Appetizers are below what we expected ) Margarita was nice $15 ( very expensive ) Ribye steak $40 ( crazyyyy) Small portion of sides and they are all pricy. Server Was okay she was running all over to cover the area. We tried but we will not going back soon. I have tried most likely all of them on Washington and Main including the Beach house all the way back near Aqurum. Our best is PUBLIC .

Victoria W.

Yelp
This place is AWESOME They have been for YEARS! Not only is the food delicious, service is great, atmosphere lovely and super consistent! So many delicious memories at this establishment and to top it off they are doing everything they can to keep us safe during Covid. As a small business owner myself I can appreciate all this not to mention their business savvy! I feel compelled to write this review as the past year has shown us so much. Not that I ever took this place for granted but it deserves a shout out and I hope to keep them around forever!

Kerry S.

Yelp
We had a top 10 dinner at Match last night! Our party of six sat in the purple velvet booth where we were treated to a culinary delight!! Since there were so many good choices on the menu, we asked our fabulous waiter, Peter, to choose our dishes for us. We ate family style and got to taste so many delicious dishes. He helped select the wine, which was also a great choice. We couldn't have been happier with this fun, festive and delicious dinner experience!!

Joe B.

Yelp
You know what, Match is great. There, I said it. In a strip of typically over-priced restaurants down in Sono, this place has me thinking about it, which means it was great. I have been more than once, and frankly, my first trip wasn't amazing - I got a burger (you might know my newest rule not to eat burgers unless it is Shake Shack, Five Guys, or similar). However, I went back, and had three memorable dishes: 1) A Kale Salad (I said it); 2) A Ravioli dish split with another; 3) A Bacon-Potato-Egg Pizza. Now, the kale salad was splendid, and made me want to eat more kale salads though I never did. The ravioli was tossed in a red sauce that would make my grandmother proud - I hope they were house-made. The pizza - this damn pizza. WOW. Who knew breakfast on a pizza could make me turn into a non-vegetarian (just kidding, but seriously it could). I have had other meals, and am excited to go back. When I anticipate my return to a restaurant, that is when it deserves 5 stars. Thanks Match!

Mike D.

Yelp
Match is a great spot to grab some amazing food in the SONO area. Great seating options, friendly staff, slight touch or urban/industrial with exposed brick wall and wood pizza oven. Carpetbaggers are a gear portion size for a light meal or great appetizer to share. A fun play on fried oysters with amazing flavor! Coconut Crunch Cake will make you crave more coconut!!!

Lisa B.

Yelp
I have wanted to come here for a long time. I finally went with my boyfriend tonight and I have to say it's mediocre. The food is very expensive for what it is. Not a lot of options, not worth the cost to me. Service was slow, though everyone was friendly. Seating was too close together also. All in all I don't think I would go back. Cookies are fresh and good though.

Amy A.

Yelp
Excellent business dinner with top notch service! Nice selection of beer, wine and cocktail choices. Delicious appetizers included burrata, tuna tartare, fantastic calamari, oysters, bruschetta and garlic bread. The spinach salad was also tasty. The swordfish steak entree was cooked to perfection in the wood burning oven and delivered wonderful smoky flavour. Other entrees also looked to be very good. Desserts shared included a soft baked chocolate chip cookie with a peanut butter ice cream (yum!!!) and an apple crisp that was the size of a small pie! Also a great, welcoming atmosphere. Will not hesitate to return!

Eric T.

Yelp
Always satisfied at this great restaurant. I've eaten here at least ten times over the last few years, and it never disappoints. Chef/owner Matt Storch takes a personal interest in making sure you're happy with everything. It's fun to sit in the back at the food bar where the cook is working the open stone oven. Nice selection of wines by the glass. Gotta have the "carpetbaggers" - fried oysters with style - and enjoy anything else on the menu.

Tu C.

Yelp
Agree with other reviewers - this place has lost its soul and appears to be much more about the margins than the food. I've been here when the food quality and creativity blew my mind, but what remains is a sad remnant. To give credit where it's due, the bread and pizza are still outstanding. The ambiance is also very hip. The wine was very good. Based on these three things, this restaurant may be for you. I'd stay far away from the rest of the menu though. The cacio e pepe was embarrassing. The chicken was fair. What really offended me however was the beet salad. Not the fact that it was $13 for a plate of canned beets, but that the waitress lied profusely about them being roasted in the brick oven.

Oscar C.

Yelp
Yesterday was my first time at this restaurant. I must say that the attention to detail in each plate is very noticeable. When you get a plate, every single items on that plate will be pure bliss. I love to cook and I'll say that getting everything perfect on a complex meal is a hard task. Match chef made this effortless. I'm floored by the quality and I'll place this restaurant at the top of my list. Truly an amazing place.

Talitha A.

Yelp
Awesome food.. margarita is just the best. The scallops can blow your mind.. how about the Truffle fries?? The octopus is just the best and so is the rotisserie chicken?? This place is awesome!!

Elsa A.

Yelp
This has been my favorite restaurant in Sono for years. Menu has a beautiful mix of different things for different palates. Their roasted half bird with potatoes is amazing, Osso Buco was cooked to perfection, and my favorite dessert is their homemade chocolate chip cookies! Amazing service as well - One time they ran out of the cookies, and they brought me 2 desserts on the house!
