Where to Find the Best Dessert Shops in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"The dessert haven, focused on all things green tea, has opened a new location in Mira Mesa in addition to its Escondido site. Multilayered parfaits, taiyaki, sno-bowl shaved ice, and soft-serve ice cream are a few of the treats to indulge in at this sweet house with roots in Hawaii." - Helen I. Hwang

Google
I will dream of the Banana Pudding Matcha forever. ♥️🍌 Their Matcha quality is insane and is 100% worth it. Definitely recommend the Seasonal Matcha flavors 1/2 sweet and their Matcha Soft Serve is very smooth and rich.

We had a lovely time at Matcha Cafe Maiko! The soft serve was delicious: creamy and just the right amount of sweetness. My grandma absolutely loved it, and we really enjoyed sitting in the café, chatting and relaxing together. I’ve tried Maiko at other locations and am used to a stronger matcha flavor, but this one had a more subtle taste, which my grandma preferred, so it was a win for her! The only downside was that the soft serve started seeping through the cone before we were done eating, which got a bit messy. Still, overall a sweet and enjoyable experience!

You don’t really get what you paid for. Service and quality really below average. Matcha tasted ok but the vanilla is 👎👎Very expensive $10 for a very small dessert and tastes so average. Took more than 15 minutes to collect my dressert when its at off peak hour.

I have been tried Matcha Cafe Mail a couple of times, every experience is pretty nice. I tried soft service both matcha and hojicha flavor, very delicious! This time we tried a Dalgona Coffee flavor which is very nice, we chose to use Oatmilk, no sugar with a Yuzu Jam topping. The whole flavor is so balanced. Coffee foam is a little bit which gives a strong coffee taste, the matcha flavor is strong and dominant. Yuzu is a nice add on flavor too. The store is clean, service is quite nice too. The only thing is their price is kinda high, I’m not sure if I would like to pay more than $10 for a drink.

Matcha soft serve is good here. I happened to be visiting at their grand opening, so they were giving free caps with $10 purchase. The hat was really large for some reason. They also had free stickers. I would say come here with other people so you can share the dessert. I think the soft serve itself was enough for at least 2 people. The other desserts are served in an actual cup, so it's quite a large portion. The melon pan is good. It's messy to eat with the soft serve. Their strawberry ice cream is from Thrifty's btw. I would have liked to try a swirl with matcha and hojicha, but they separate those two. Inside there are a few tables, but it gets cramped when the line is long.

Google
Matcha soft serve is amazing! They have some featured flavors too, we tried the matcha and strawberry yuzu swirl soft serve. It was great but I still like a good old plain matcha soft serve so we actually went back in to get another matcha soft serve. Great matcha flavor, not overly sweet and best of all, comes on a waffle cone!! No extra charge for the waffle cone too :) employees are pretty friendly. Cute place to sit at and they have some games too and 1-2 tables to sit outside. I will definitely be back!

Google
Nei who handed me my order immediately noticed the gloomy expression I had because I didn't want my ice cream cup to have a lid on it since it smudges the matcha powder. Nei offered to redo my order right away, he is very attentive and treat customers very well. Normally, I'm shy and won't ask the worker to redo my order so when Nei offered first, I really feel relieved so now I'm more incline to come back every Tuesday because of Nei.

Great location, and very nice store, very easy to order. I enjoy their ice cream especially because I am lactose intolerant and I am ok. I tried the ube and black sesame mix. I can taste the ube but not so much the sesame. The portion is very very big! I hope they can offer a smaller one that’s <$5. I think with a smaller portion, I can come back more often without wasting or feeling overwhelmed.

Yelp
Matcha Cafe Maiko is one of my favorite chains for soft serve matcha flavored ice cream. I really enjoy the bold matcha flavor. I was really happy to find out that there's a branch in the Mira Mesa mall. I ordered the Maiko Jelly Parfait and my boyfriend got the Maiko Special with a side of boba. These 2 desserts were huge! We each got a medium and are now curious how big a large one is! I guess we'll have to upgrade the size next time! This is a nice place to hang out. They have lots of comfy tables & chairs that's good for large groups. They have a variety of board games that you could play why you enjoyed your treats. Service was quick and friendly. We'll be back!

Yelp
I think this is my favorite Matcha Cafe Maiko location in San Diego. I came around noon and was relieved that it wasn't busy. They have a self-serve kiosk where you can order, which is easy to use and convenient! The intensity and quality of the matcha is evident, but not too strong in a sense that it can be enjoyed both by new matcha drinkers and seasoned matcha enthusiasts like me. - Iced matcha latte with oat milk (5/5). Not too strong, not too sweet, ratio between milk and matcha was perfect! - Affogato with vanilla soft serve (5/5). A little pricey for how much you get, but you're paying for good taste and quality! Very good :) - Matcha soft serve (5/5). The standard. Matcha Cafe Maiko does it right. - Croissant Taiyaki (5/5). I got mine with Oreo filling! Has an airy croissant texture, which balanced out the Oreo filling. Not super sweet at all. This is a new location! It's clean and cozy. Service was quick! I'll be coming to this location again soon!

Yelp
I've been to other locations in SD and OC, but my experience at this shop has been the best by far! It is located at the Mira Mesa shopping plaza, near crab hut. The shop is small but lots of seating for studying. They have a tablet to take your order or you can order at the counter. The menu has all the same ice creams, desserts, and lattes as other stores. I got the strawberry matcha latte and matcha latte with cream. We were surprised when they gave us a goodie bag - I guess we went during the grand opening! Thank you to the nice employees for the hat, pen, and sticker :) Our matcha was sooo good, the perfect mix of sweet and matcha taste. I will be returning as it's closer to me than the other SD locations :)

Yelp
There's no one at the counter taking orders you wait to order at a machine or you can order online on your phone. I love this as it helps to eliminate any confusion about special requests when ordering and jets you see all available options.. I tried the Maiko Waffle Special with matcha/ube swirl and whipped cream. This is something that taste as good as it looks. The Matcha wasn't too overpowering. It was just the right amount for an exquisite flavor. But you do get a lot and I could only finish about a quarter of it. My friend got a hot yuzu matcha with yuzu jam and loved the balance of yuzu matcha flavor. We also took home two jars of the coconut pudding, one in black sesame, and one in the coffee flavor. Good thing I have some self restraint because I wanted to eat the entire jar of coffee coconut pudding in one sitting.

Yelp
A lovely addition to the neighborhood, Matcha Cafe Miami provides drinks, soft serve, pudding, and taiyaki. I've tried this location before in the San Gabriel valley area and I've always loved how rich and creamy the match soft serve was! This time around I got the hojicha and the ube soft serve which I loved - the flavors were intense but it's not so sweet (which is a good thing to me) Service was quick and fast, the monitor to order from and the place to pick up your order is at the same place. So it's pretty crowded to get in and out. There is plenty of seating and it's a great place for a quick bite or hang out!

Yelp
Cute pretty little place for a quick snack. The prices are a bit elevated in my opinion for what it is. The staffing was friendly but the food was alright. Nothing super duper special about this place but worth a try if you are wanting something new.

Yelp
Huge fan of matcha latte and I'm glad this shop opened up!! Passed by on 4/17/24, it appears they just opened up. Store was clean and there is ample seating inside. Service was good, cashier was nice. I wanted to order hojicha ice cream to go, but I think since it's soft opening it wasn't available (even though it was on the menu). Same high quality as the matcha drinks in Honolulu (without the parking hassle XD). Looking forward to trying their other drinks and soft serves.

Yelp
It's so nice that they finally opened one closer to me, it's been on my to-visit for a while. I got the maiko special and while the ice cream tasted ok it was a bit of a weird setup that ended up making a mess, and there was too much soft serve covering the parfait. The kiosk asked for optional toppings and they just put them in a bowl on the side because there wasn't enough room. I couldn't finish it. The taiyaki was ok but there's better places. The drinks look good though so I'll be back for that. Nice seating area - clean and well spaced out if you want to eat there. Food took a while and they didn't announce or update the text at least for mine. It was busy even after 9PM on a Thursday.

Yelp
A few years ago, on a trip to Hawaii, I tried a hojicha latte for the first time and became OBSESSED. I was so excited when I found out that Matcha Cafe Maiko had it on their menu. I'm a huge fan of cheese foam drinks too, so their cheese foam hojicha has easily become one of my favorites! I've been to both San Diego locations to satisfy my hojicha cravings haha. The Mira Mesa location is smaller than the one in Clairemont Mesa, but seating doesn't seem to be an issue, especially because there's a plaza/walkway right outside. This location (Mira Mesa) has 2 ipad kiosks, which helps to streamline the ordering process. They also have their wifi info posted on the wall, which I always appreciate!

Yelp
Really delicious soft serve! Their matcha is so flavorful and mildly sweet. Portion sizes are very generous as well. Their drinks are also very popular, though my friend mentioned their hojita was not as good. Stick to their matcha desserts and you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
I love matcha, but sometimes it's hard to find a good place that doesn't water it down. I'm so glad there's a matcha based cafe in Mira Mesa! I brought my friends and we were all so impressed. My favorite was the strawberry matcha because there are some strawberry bits and it mixes so well together with the drink :) and I thought the matcha to strawberry ratio was perfect. Loved how I could taste the strawberries and how they don't overpower the matcha. I got 50% sweet and it was perfect for me :)

Yelp
The ice creams were so good. The boba however became hard after a while. I think it's probably because the ice cream was cold and it became hard. But other than that, the ice cream was so creamy and I will definitely come again.

Yelp
Soft opening!! :) So delicious - same as the Matcha Maiko I know and love in Honolulu and Clairemont. I had the hojicha swirl with vanilla in a jelly parfait. I am so excited to have this dessert place so close to my house.

Yelp
Really inconsistent with their serving sizes... really sad to pay ~$8 for a sundae to have it filled less than halfway with soft serve and more of just unsweetened boba. Like boba topped with a bit of soft serve. And to also see people pay the same for their orders and end up with significantly more in their servings. I posted a picture between two separate days and between two different cups (my friend ordered a sundae too) and the difference is really noticeable. The soft serve itself is really good! I just wish I received the same amount as other people who paid the same price.

Yelp
So nice Matcha Cafe is now in MM! The soft serve ice cream really is great. I will be back!

Yelp
The Matcha here IS MAGNIFICENT!!! YOU can really taste the tea and not only is their matcha great, but also their Hojicha latte as well. Their matcha is so smooth and earthy taste feeling! Also their coconut pudding is great too! Very delightful and comforting taste! Service is great as well, they would recommend or suggest some drinks as well.

Yelp
Cozy little spot across from L&Ls and Ding Tea. Service was fast, you can order from the digital menu or talk to the cashier. Ordered a soft serve and a matcha latte with soy. Intense and premium matcha taste. After my first sip I could feel the antioxidants and amino acids lowering my cholesterol. The earthy matcha taste you crave licks you back as you bite into your soft serve cone. I felt like the avatar learning earth bending because my matcha mouth was overwhelmed with the ceremonial grade flavor. Pebbles began to levitate around me with each step I took towards the parking lot. Jk! but you should def give this place a shot. It's gonna be a hit when summer comes around! They also have a fridge with goodies you can take to go. 10/10 recommend

Yelp
great matcha place for dessert and drinks! ambiance is simple but the quality is good! matcha cravings satisfied!

Yelp
Delicious soft serve with big serving and not too sweet. Great service. Place is clean and in great location.

Yelp
We love this place. It's a bit pricey but the match drinks and ice cream are delicious.

Caroline N.

Yelp
Slow service /tried 3 separate times but still slow and nonchalant about speed. Good treats but inconsistent each time. This place could be great.

Yelp
surprised to see matcha maiko opening in Mira Mesa but it is a very welcome addition! I already had the one in SF so I had high expectations. We got their strawberry matcha latte 75% sweet which was perfect, and also their hojicha black sesame latte which was very "dirty" and delicious. We also got the melon pan which was so flaky and yummy too. bc we were so full, we didn't get the ice cream in it but I definitely would next time. atmosphere is nice and casual. Will be back!

Yelp
the pricing is a lil expensive, but the quality of the desserts/drinks are really good. the consistency is not so great, my family went last time and told me that their soft serve was filled. when i went by myself to check it out it was definitely reaching the top of the cup. as for the service, it would be nice if they had a sign that the ONLY want you to pay through kiosk machine. I wasn't greeted like everyone else that walked in (didn't take too much out of it), but stood there for awhile waiting to order. At first i didn't see they dont take cash because it's a tiny sticky note on the register screen. but was told by a male employee that: "we actually want people to order through the kiosk/tablet". it would be nice if they acknowledged me standing there for awhile, and just mentioned it. But hey next group that came and were immediately greeted & the second they were waiting for their order to be taken, were asked politely to use the kiosk. I'm sure it wed just one of those days, I completely understand because I also used to work in food business/customer service--but it would be nice to have some cues or bigger signs for people to see where to go. But overall the store itself if super cute & isn't loud and obnoxious. they have games you can play to hangout and entertain yourself!!
