13 Hidden Restaurants in Waikiki, Honolulu - Eater

"This barebones counter, located next to a grungy night club, specializes in soft serve and drinks made with matcha from Kyoto. You can order matcha soft serve literally draped in gold leaf, but the real golden item is the matcha parfait, which consists of mochi, azuki beans, chestnuts, matcha chiffon cake, cornflakes, and matcha soft serve all jammed into a plastic cup. Google
A tasty little hole in the wall in Waikiki for a not-too-sweet matcha treat. Enjoyed the matcha parfait which was a good portion and size to share with a friend or two. The fresh mochi was incredible and I wish I'd ordered more ala carte. Overall it wasn't too sweet but I wished the matcha flavor was still stronger. The matcha cake was ok to me (a little dry and dense), but the corn flakes, adzuki and jelly were fantastic. Would be interested to try the seasonal ube flavor and adzuki soft serves. Staff are friendly and there's both a counter to order with staff and a self-order kiosk. Card payments only!

Google
MATCHA Stand MAIKO was our favorite matcha spot on the island, and we visited multiple times. Our go-to order was the Matcha Iced Latte—perfect for grabbing on the go while strolling through the Waikiki area. Ordering was quick and easy with the touchscreen system. The place is very small, so it can be busy.

Elaine Phan

Google
They pack the soft serve with matcha so if you’re a matcha lover this is the place to eat! It’s more like a small booth so you get your matcha quickly but sit outside at tables. There’s limited seating so you get lucky or stand. It’s also a good value or price, especially compared to other matcha places nearby.

Google
I really enjoyed getting my daily matcha here when visiting. They have ordering tablets you can easily order on. Whenever I came my matcha was always delicious and tasted authentic. Their soft serve, especially their ube, is absolutely delicious. The reason I give 4 instead of 5 stars is because they have terrible lids so if you are walking around it will most definitely leak on the sides like a lot. It was pretty annoying but it didn’t stop me from going back.

Maria Naron

Google
I tried the matcha shaved ice here and it was fantastic! The matcha flavor was rich and authentic without being too bitter, and the soft serve added just the right touch of sweetness. Perfectly refreshing and delicious—an ideal treat for a hot day!

Google
HANDS DOWN, THE BEST, AUTHENTIC JAPANESE MATCHA ON ALL OF OAHU. Yes, even better than Nana's which seems to be watered down. The quality of their matcha ice cream, latte, parfait, float, etc are unmatched. I absolutely cannot stand most matcha places on this island, they usually have only a faint taste... but THIS is legit! If you want powerful matcha flavor and authenticity, this is it. It's exactly like matcha in Japan. Look nowhere else.

H K

Google
Do NOT go here. They market themselves like some kind of matcha specialty spot, but the drink was honestly terrible — bland, watery, and not even close to what I expected from a place claiming to know matcha. Complete waste of time and money. And don’t even get me started on the service. My drink came out leaking everywhere even though the lid was on. When I pointed it out, she just said, “It’s okay, it melts fast.” Then wiped both the table and my cup and the lid with the same filthy rag. The matcha kept dripping, so she wrapped it in a paper towel — and had the nerve to tell me, “Just drink it fast so it won’t spill.” I wish I were joking. The two customers before me had no issues. I really don’t want to believe it was racism, but the way I was treated made me question it. It felt personal, and not in a good way. This place is all hype, zero quality — both in taste and in basic human decency.

Maggie Chen

Google
Very fast service. The ice cream melts fast, but that’s to be expected. Reasonable pricing. Not very many places to sit but at least it’s decently shady. Recommend the tea float or just a regular latte. Would come again!

Yelp
Absolutely insane, so delicious and extremely smooth. It's lowk a hole in the wall which is how you KNOW ts is boutta be bussssssss. It was very simple workers very nice and not overbearing. Matcha is insanely good, I'm convinced i will never find a better one. Its ceremony grade and extremely green

Yelp
After a nice udon meal, we went out the back way and spotted people leaving a shop holding icecream, which is exactly what we were craving for dessert. Seems to be a hole in the wall near Playbar specializing in matcha. The icecream cup i got immediately took me back to my Japan trip. I chose the vanilla matcha swirl: The matcha tasted authentic in that rich/ bitter matcha way, which was beautifully balanced by the sweetness of the vanilla. It has a very smooth texture. Afterwards, I went to Yelp to learn more- the matcha is from Kyoto! No wonder. First time here- writing this review so I can relive this experience and remember to come back! Next time will be sure to ask about the kamaaina discount. Didn't know and wasn't asked.

Yelp
FOOD -- I was debating whether I should get a latte or ice cream -- lo and behold, they offer the matcha latte float which gives you the best of both worlds. The matcha latte float was amazing! You could tell that the matcha latte and matcha ice cream was made with great quality because of how strong the taste was. I took my sweet time enjoying the ice cream. My only complaint is that the latte was consumed rather quickly (was the portion small?) and was already sipping through a cup full of ice. They also sell bags of 40g matcha powder for $16. SERVICE -- Workers have pleasant and friendly personality. My order was ready in less than five minutes. It was very quick! They also offer resident discount with state ID. AMBIANCE -- This spot is a standalone stand tucked behind Marukame in Waikiki. I just wish there was more clean tables to consume my snack on. I sat on a stone table right infront of the shop with melted ice cream that looked like it had been there for hours. Also, parking in Waikiki is generally hard to find so be warned about that before coming here!

Yelp
My family and I love matcha everything! My mom was craving some matcha dessert and we came here after our dinner in Waikiki. We were not disappointed! They give you a lot for the price and you could share this with another person. We had the shaved ice with Azuki and condensed milk on top as well as the one with the matcha soft serve. The soft serve is sooo good! This dessert actually tasted better than a few we tried in Japan. We will be back when we are in Waikiki!

Yelp
My fave matcha spot! Only wish the location offered parking, but can't expect too much out of Waikīkī! I love the matcha latte float and soft serve (seasonal flavors rotate, current flavor is watermelon as of 7/6/25). Prices are fair! They used to offer kama'aina discount, but not sure if they still do. Had to order on the kiosk because there was no staff at the register. Love the strength of the matcha in even their sweet desserts!

Yelp
@fortunefoodfinds: "(U)BE-autiful n' CONE-fident! A swirl of matcha + vanilla n' ube soft serve from PREMIUM MATCHA Café MAIKO in Waikiki. Both are so good where you can really taste the ube n' the matcha has the earthy flave, that is my fave!" Staff: friendly Interior: step inside only to place n' pick up order Exterior: has outside tables n' chairs Wait time: 10 mins total (5 mins before n' after ordering) Parking: street or nearby garages Overall comments: it's been many, many years since my last visit. I forgot how good this place was n' wish I came back sooner!

Yelp
I've been to this location many times and I have to say they are definitely difficult to beat in terms of their matcha and soft serve products. They also offer a Kamaaina discount if you show a Hawaii ID. They have a rotating flavor that changes either due to stocks or season (personal favorites are Watermelon and the Infamous Yuzu). They do not have validation so, come with a friend or drop by for a quick dessert! Current flavor is back to Yuzu as of 06/01/25!

Yelp
Been here a few times and it's always satisfied my matcha cravings. I feel I'm picky with my matcha and am always disappointed when the color doesn't come out darker green, or if the matcha is drowning in milk. However, cafe Maiko definitely has quality strong matcha. You can order with a worker, or order using the tablet outside which is super user friendly! My go to is an iced matcha oat milk latte with less ice. Always comes out great with a bold and slightly bitter matcha flavor and the less ice prevents it from getting too watered down. I've never tried the frozen drinks or teas, but they seem popular! They sell their own matcha in bags, too! Located next to donut king. Not a lot of seating outside as it's more of a to-go spot. As for parking, I usually will be in the area (like at international marketplace) and will swing by as it's across the street. However, international marketplace now requires a $25 purchase for validation--which to me that concept is wild--and most stores don't let you combine purchases for validation. Even with the parking issue, if you're in the mood for quality matcha, it's definitely worth making the trip, it's the only location across the islands!

Yelp
Conveniently located in the heart of Waikiki. It's a small shop with no seating. This place gets busy but service is quick. I ordered a Matcha Latte Float which is great if you can't decide between a latte or soft serve. It's so good! Not too sweet, creamy, and the matcha flavor really comes through.
google avatar

Marc F.

Yelp
Love their half vanilla and matcha swirl cone. The perfect combination of a bit bitterness and sweetness. Had it twice while I was in Waikiki because the first time half of if fell on the floor while I walking.
google avatar

Kimberly L.

Yelp
We stopped by while looking for dinner but found ourselves craving something sweet--and since we love matcha, this spot was a no-brainer. We ordered the matcha soft serve in a cup with ube and the matcha latte float. The soft serve was excellent--creamy with a strong, authentic matcha flavor. The ube paired really well with it too. The matcha latte float was a fun combo--you get the best of both worlds: a refreshing drink and a scoop of matcha soft serve on top. My only (minor) complaint? I wish there was more! It was so good I finished it way too fast and was left with just ice. Still, a great little treat spot for matcha lovers. Would definitely come back!
google avatar

Kacie S.

Yelp
super rich matcha flavor! would defs make the trek into waikiki again for the matcha latte float w/ matcha ice cream. great and quick service! kamaaina discount with hawaii id!
google avatar

Nicole C.

Yelp
No cash fyi! I was weary to get the shaved ice because I didn't think it would have as much flavor as the ice cream, but I was very wrong! You could taste the matcha in every bite. They aren't stingy with it! Fast service and you can order on kiosk
google avatar

Cora L.

Yelp
Matcha was so good!! It was rich and creamy while maintaining a strong matcha flavor. One of my favorites on the island for sure. We walked up to the cafe, where there was some seating outside but none inside. I am not sure where the parking for it would be but we ended up parking a bit away. The tables outside accompanied some of the chairs. There did not seem to be a ton of seating though. Inside, the cafe is small with space for ordering from the self-order kiosk. Behind the kiosk, there is a counter and space for them to make the food items and drinks. There was no line when we went so we went up to the kiosk and ordered. There was a menu outside that we looked at before ordering. There were many matcha options from shaved ice to frappes to lattes. We considered the shaved ice and soft serve options but did not want to sit down at one of the tables outside. We got the matcha lattes. So good. However, they did charge $0.30 for the matcha to be iced, which was not something I have seen at other cafes. While this is not a ton, it was a surprise. The drinks came out quickly and the woman working was sweet. Even with ice, the drinks did not end up tasting watered down, which was great. Definitely worth a try to get their matcha!
google avatar

Courtney L.

Yelp
When I saw the simplicity of their menu, I knew it was going to be good! Whether you get a drink or ice cream, the options are relatively straightforward so that one can appreciate the quality matcha for what it is without distractions from additional flavors. Excited for a matcha latte, I was the first in line when they opened at 11:30A. Personally, I wouldn't necessarily call this location a cafe since there's no seating inside and all items are prepared in disposable cups. It is more of a walk-up storefront with just a counter and self-ordering kiosk. 12 oz. MATCHA LATTE ($5.50): Upon first sip, I was in awe! It was so creamy and the flavor of the matcha truly shined. Based on its lovely green color, richness and slight earthiness, I had no doubts that they use high quality matcha here. If I could change one thing, I would have requested to lessen the sweetness a bit. The latte actually tasted like a strong green tea ice cream, but every sip was delightful. My preference for less ice was perfectly executed as well. My companion ordered the LEMON MATCHA ($5) which is one of their non-dairy options. She said the lemon flavor was very subtle and would have preferred that it be more apparent. However, I'm assuming that they intended for the matcha to remain the focus and not be masked behind notes of citrus. This is one of the best matcha lattes that I've ever had, and the price was very reasonable, especially considering its location in the touristy region of Waikiki. 4.75 stars.
google avatar

Megan K.

Yelp
Small walk up spot next to Playbar Waikiki. Good quality matcha, nice staff, and fresh ingredients. The red bean and mochi inside was good. The ice cream was creamy too. We split it amongst the two of us and it was just right!
google avatar

Matthew W.

Yelp
I'm a huge fan of soft serve, and this was a delightful recommendation. Service was quick, shop was cute and conveniently located for those staying at the Waikiki resorts. The matcha here is definitely the highlight (go figure), and I'm very pleased that it's neither too sweet nor unappealing bitter (as I often find with matcha lattes). Very happy with the experience!
google avatar

Nini H.

Yelp
Not all Matcha Maikos are the same. In fact, they have a huge variance of taste and quality. I've been to ~5-6 matcha Maikos. This location is the best one. Must try here. If you like a strong green tea flavor. I would skip the shaved ice and just get anything with their soft serve.
google avatar

Natsumi E.

Yelp
So good! Closest matcha to Japan! Most "matcha" places on island have cheap quality matcha but cafe Maiko surprised me! It was so rich and delicious! We also got the yuzu soft serve (not pictured) which was so delicious perfect for a hot day. I would've gotten the yuzu matcha soft serve but I didn't think they would mix well so I just got matcha and tried my friends! Definitely will be coming back. We ordered on the screen and a nice quiet lady made then right away! Right after we got there the line started piling up!
google avatar

Jeddie-May C.

Yelp
Matcha maiko never disappoints! I love how fast they are with the orders and that they are honest with the recommendations. You can chill or stay around the area after as there is a lot of seats outside. I was honestly surprised with how much they topped it with ice cream. It was delicious and I would definitely go back again.
google avatar

Vicky L.

Yelp
Absolute best matcha on the island!! Service is always great too, really nice people. Good price for great quality matcha. I love that they have a kamaaina discount as well. They now have a machine in the middle of the store to order yourself instead of having to order from the register. We did that and then saw the tiny words on the side saying they only do kamaaina discount at the register T-T but it's alright. They sell their matcha blend on the side as well, and oh man was I tempted! But I'm about to get matcha from Kyoto so I'll live until then. It's a shame that they're in Waikiki, because I think they'd get way more local customers if they weren't.

Yelp
Line was long the night I went, but the staff is always friendly and smiling. The matcha flavor is strong and a must eat for matcha lovers!
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
Come to this little hole in the wall for your matcha fix on the island! You can tell their matcha is pretty high in quality and they also offer a variety of different menu items including hojicha and ube flavors (my personal favorite!). I come here for the ube x matcha soft serve combo, which is sooo delicious; not too sweet and both flavors are bold in their own unique ways. But this month, they have an ube x chocolate soft serve mix so I opted for their matcha latte which was really refeshing in this heat! The employees were super kind and welcoming(: Service was quick and I always make sure to stop by here at least once when I'm visiting the islands~
google avatar

Yelp
Very happy to see a Matcha Maiko here in town. This shop is located along Kuhio Ave, and is situated next to Play Bar night club and Ebinomi. Parking is pretty hard to find in Waikiki per usual. There's no indoor seating in the shop, you stop in to place an order on a kiosk and then can sit down on these low rock walls that are in the courtyard. I love getting the matcha and ube flavors, and in general I highly recommend any of their soft serve flavors (and trying their seasonal ones!). Service is quick and friendly, and my order usually comes out quickly. I love how strong the matcha flavor is in their ice cream, and it still comes out creamy and not too sweet. This is always the best place to get matcha for me!
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
Premium Matcha Café Maiko is a bit of a hidden gem! While its tucked-away location might make it tricky to find, but adds a charm for those in the know. There are chairs and benches for enjoying your treats on-site is a nice touch, especially for those looking to take a break while exploring Waikiki. It's definitely our spot to go when we're craving matcha in Waikiki. The vanilla and matcha mix soft serve sounds like a perfect treat for the warm Waikiki weather. Creamy and refreshing with that signature matcha flavor. Pairing it with the matcha cake is a great choice; the cake was soft and a decent size that complemented the soft serve beautifully. The matcha latte was pretty good with its authentic taste providing a refreshing beverage option. Overall, Café Maiko offers good quality matcha-based treats that hit the spot on a hot day.
google avatar

Bea F.

Yelp
Really needed a cool drink after walking in the sun for a bit. I've visited the Cafe Maiko location back home in Vancouver many times, so I was very excited to see it here in Oahu. Quality was nearly identical and delicious. Although I'd say a bit more expensive to what I pay back home, still worth it. I got their classic iced matcha latte, but I've had their soft serve before as well and it's a must-try if you're up for the extra dairy.
google avatar

Ini B.

Yelp
I've been looking for a great matcha place in Honolulu, Waikīkī for the past week. Got some in a cafe and around the area and they have been terrible. Looked up this place and saw it had great reviews and wanted to try it. I'm visiting from Seattle so I'm biased with matcha. But this was one of the best matcha I've ever had, both the latte and the ice cream. Would come back to HNL just for this matcha spot. Also great service from the staff and they were really nice and patient with us!
google avatar

Dianna R.

Yelp
I love their soft serves. They have a rotating flavor, but I do wish they kept the yuzu year round. The watermelon is very good too. If you show your license, they will give you a Kamaaina discount. The workers are nice and the shop is clean. Their service is quite fast, but sometimes there is no seating. The eating courtyard is shared with other places, so on a hot day, you must eat quickly! If you want, you can also add castella to your soft serve--I never do, but my brother does.
google avatar

Brinney B.

Yelp
I got their iced matcha latte and it's pretty decent! I will say it is a bit grainy and premade. However for the convenience I can't complain! I would say their matcha desserts like soft serve is super yummy tho

lids d.

Yelp
Pure matcha majesty! The soft serve is velvety green gold, and the latte? A cold, creamy spell of perfection. Matcha Café Maiko is a divine experience. Worth every swoon and spoon. Never had this good quality of a matcha in my 25 years of life.
google avatar

Justin C.

Yelp
Walking down Kuhio Ave in Waikiki I spotted a sign with a matcha green tea cone, and thought...who doesn't love a cone while strolling around? Shop is open daily 11:30-9PM every day. Nice menu inside the cafe wiht a self serve kiosk. Menu included soft serve cones, cups, shaved ice, teas, tea floats, frappes, lattes and more. Staff was friendly and talked me into a mix vanilla and matcha maiko special. Matcha and Vanilla were refreshing and filled that dessert craving. The Shiratama mochi balls were not as soft as I would expect, seasonal chestnut was good, corn flakes and agar jelly was good, match cake was moist and azuki beans were good. A lot going on in this cup, but overall good 4/5. They even sell pints of ice cream to go. The Yuzu Japanese citrus cone sounds good for our next visit. You can also pick up matcha powder here as well. Note: NO CASH PAYMENTS card or phone only. Your leaf reward points can only be used in the Honolulu store and not other Premium Matcha Café Maiko locations. Tip: 8% Kama'Aina (local only) discount available.
google avatar

Susan H.

Yelp
Cute little ice cream shop in the heart of Waikiki. Service is ordered through a machine and they do not take cash. I got the mixed cone with match and vanilla. It is piled high with ice cream but melts fast in the Hawaiian heat. It was delicious and came out to $10 CAD after conversion.
google avatar

Tung D.

Yelp
came here after udon for desserts. The Yuzu ice cream was delicious! creamy while tangy at the same time. I liked my rice tea hojicha latte as well. the green tea latte was also good! They have an order machine to make things quick and easy.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
We ordered the matcha and ube shaved ice with mochi. Came here for my kids who are matcha lovers. I really don't like matcha myself but the matcha here was actually good. The ladies are very sweet as well. Came around 12 and there was not much of a wait.

Sofia I.

Yelp
Good matcha it had a bit of a thicker drink taste/density i also added jelly to mine but overall i like that this matcha wasnt as over sweetened as others
google avatar

Todd P.

Yelp
My wife and I visited Premium Matcha Cafe Maiko and ordered a Maiko Special. It was interesting! Never had a desert with corn flakes. Pretty good!
google avatar

Gabrielle R.

Yelp
Ambiance was cute and clean. There isnt much room to stand or sit inside but there are benches outside. The service was quick, we ordered online through a screen outside but the person handing us our order was nice. The drink overall was phenomenal. The best, freshest, and most authentic matcha i have had on island. I will be going back again!
google avatar

Tricia M.

Yelp
We were on vacation back in march and we are obsessed with Matcha. We went back everyday during vacation. This matcha spot is mouth watering.
google avatar

Yas T.

Yelp
Soft serve is great order through the kiosk and boom get your soft serve. If you in Waik'z it's a must try.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Very cute small shop located in Waikiki! I got a matcha ice cream float and I could tell the matcha used was very high quality! If you are a matcha fan you definitely need to try this place!
google avatar

Wolf O.

Yelp
Perfect place for an icy treat after Marugame Udon (right next door). I was expecting greatness on the matcha reviews, but I found both the blend and the black cocoa cone a little bland. Next time I'll be back for the ube in a regular cone, which was the better combo. Curious: I was surprised to see a 2023 Black Friday promotion for 50% off cones--does that significantly increase business? Also there was some weirdness in the ordering system in which the self-serve ordering machine appeared to use a different counting system than the live-contact ordering system (which I didn't know was an option). A minor operational detail to smooth out.
google avatar

Lynn P.

Yelp
The ube soft serve was delicious. It wasn't too sweet. The matcha was also good and was better than the matcha soft serve at nana's green tea
google avatar

Odette R.

Yelp
Found this cute little shop in the heart of Waikiki! We were craving for an ice cream and decided to try their matcha and azuki & ube flavor. The prices were really reasonable.
google avatar

Lisa N.

Yelp
This hidden gem is tucked away in Waikiki directly behind the international marketplace. Their matcha latte is excellent so smooth. Definitely a great little find. There are other shops and restaurants around the corner. It's on a main road but there are also tables a throughout the courtyard if you wanted to sit for a bit.
google avatar

Yvonne C.

Yelp
This may be the best Bacha ice cream I've ever had in my life. And for the record, I've been to Japan several times before and this one outdo them all. Really really good and affordable. Would definitely come here if you're craving a sweet treat in Waikiki. A must visit! Service is great and ambiance is nice.
google avatar

Yoshiko G.

Yelp
This review is from when I visited here during my trip to Hawaii in February 2024. I loooooove matcha! I drink matcha at home almost every day. If you love matcha too, you should try this cafe! They use Uji matcha, which is a very good quality matcha from Kyoto, Japan. They have many selections such as shaved ice, soft serve, parfait, float, frappe, and teas. I tried matcha soft serve, but next time, I would like to try the Shogun matcha soft serve topped with a 23.75K gold leaf! Even without the gold leaf, the matcha soft serve was delicious. Corn was thin so it didn't bother the matcha flavor of soft serve. FYI, they don't accept cash. They don't have any space to eat inside.
google avatar

Christine J.

Yelp
addictive... The matcha softserve with matcha powder sprinkled on. I don't love sweets but can have this everyday. And the only reason I didn't when I was there was bc they close at 9pm everyday and I was too late to make it there after dinner most days.
google avatar

Claire L.

Yelp
It's been such a long time since I had some really good Japanese Sundae! The ice creams were not too sweet and maintain some of the natural tea bitterness. The other toppings were delicious, very comparable to what I had in Japan. The service was fast despite the line. The location was lovely with cute lights and an old tree to an enjoy very pleasant dessert.
