Mater Terrae

"Situated on the top floor of the Raphaël hotel just behind Piazza Navona, this restaurant serves some of the best vegetarian cuisine in Rome. Each of the elaborate dishes boasts numerous ingredients and every single course is a delightful surprise. Equally stunning is the panoramic terrace overlooking the city’s rooftops, where meals are served in fine weather." - Michelin Inspector

One of the best vegetarian meals I’ve ever had anywhere. The chef understands how to make each dish flavorful and balanced, trusting the ingredients to carry the dish. Pastas, risotto, gazpacho, main courses and appetizers were all delightful. The views from the outdoor terrace and the indoor dining room are spectacular at sunset, and the waitstaff is very kind. As the terrace filled up we got a little overlooked in the dining room, but that may be a matter of staffing. Will definitely dine here on another visit to Rome.

I love this restaurant. This is my second time in three years coming here for dinner, and the view and food is always spectacular. The seagulls trying to steal the posh guests food is as entertaining as ever. Try the cocktails as the mixologists are great here. And book early to get the beautiful afternoon light and sunset!

We came here for my birthday. The food, atmosphere and service were all excellent. We had a perfect time there and I'm so glad my partner chose this place. The staff were very nice and professional and even gave us an extra birthday treat. We are vegan and were a little concerned about the number of vegan options before we went there, but we were very satisfied with our meal and I think we didn't even try all of the vegan options on the menu, we were too full :) We ordered a few plates to share and were completely stuffed by the end of the evening.

Excellent food! Not a vegetarian myself but this was a very delicious dining experience. Beautiful terrace overlooking Rome, great location, just behind Piazza Navona. Service is friendly although not very efficient. Ana though was amazing - such a great personality. We did the tasting menu with wine pairing. The 2 orange wines were definitely a surprising choice, not one I loved but interesting to try. One piece of constructive feedback would be to better pace the change of wine, the first few glasses felt rushed - not finished with previous one and already tasting the next. Would be great if empty glasses are taken away more timely. Overall a fun and enjoyable night.

Excellent service, exquisite cuisine and breathtaking location ! The personnel was welcoming, competent and very professional. Note that you are entering a vegetarian restaurant : this in no way alters the finesse of the dishes. If you are lucky enough to have the weather on your side, you could be seated on the most impressive and relaxing terrace of Rome ! Also, as we selected a specific menu, we were given a nice surprise at the end of our dinner !

Pros: insanely beautiful view and the servers were very nice! Cons: 1) HUGE wasps swarming every table (we went around sunset) 2) A seagull attacked our plate and stole some bread — seems like a few linger for hours because they know there’s food 3) The water was 8 EURO per bottle (yikes!) and they got us second one without telling us the insane price like 10 minutes before we left so we chugged the entire bottle after we got the check 4) Have had many pastas this month in Rome, and their spaghetti tastes like out of the box with none of that freshly made magic Overall would recommend for only drinks and the view but only after sunset unless you’re not scared of giant wasps!

Incredible setting to enjoy exceptional food. We are not vegan or vegetarian but if one were to enjoy a meatless existence it would be at Mater Terrae! We chose to stay at the Bio Hotel Raphaël because of its proximity to so many of Rome's greatest sites and also because the Michelin guide recommended its restaurant. We stayed here in July and dined on the open top roof terrace with views across the city which include the dome of the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pace which is right next door and then a more distant view to the dome of St. Peter's Basilica. Not being vegetarian the simple option for us was to choose the tasting menu, which was sublime from first to last.

Most disappointing dining experience in Rome. Food was mediocre, at best… the pizza has so much sauce that all the cheese/toppings slid off leaving a soggy limp base. The risotto was gelatinous and lacked flavor. The whole grain bread was chalky. The service was poor- waited so long for our wine we had to ask for it again, the waiter got one of our items completely wrong (despite pointing to the item on the menu while ordering), was not checked on after mains arrived, and when the check came had to point out that to staff that the item that was incorrect/sent back was still on the bill. Despite the Michelin star and rooftop location the atmosphere was spoiled by the aggressive seagulls (attacked twice), the bugs in our drinks/food, and the disgusting cigar smoke from the smoking area below us (with our children), and the complete lack of cleanliness in the bathroom (discarded dirty towel next to the sink for hours, no towels to dry hands- from 6:35pm-9:00pm, and trash on the bathroom floor). When I asked to speak to a manager about my concerns there was no one available. Complete waste of money. Would not recommend to anyone. I used to work in the service industry and I had better service (and food) today from a tiny unknown cafe.
