Where To Eat Outside In Jersey City & Hoboken

"Mathews is from the people behind White Star, and while this American spot serves similarly excellent fried chicken, it’s more of a place to go for a full meal than drinks and bar snacks. Tables on the white-fenced outdoor patio are available for walk-ins and reservations, which you can make for dinner or weekend brunch by calling (201) 333-1258⁣." - hannah albertine, nikko duren, matt tervooren

20 Spots In Jersey City & Hoboken Open For Indoor Dining Today

"In a lot of ways, brunch and dinner are pretty similar. They both start with drinks you wish were a bit less sweet, they both end with someone saying “dessert was a good choice,” and in between, they both involve a hot honey fried chicken sandwich. Well, at least that last part should be the case at Mathew’s, which is now accepting reservations by phone for groups of six or more indoors and on their tent-covered patio." - matt tervooren

The 21 Best Restaurants In Jersey City 2024

"The menu at Mathew’s is big and varied, which makes it a great place to take an indecisive friend group that can barely decide on what movie to watch, much less a restaurant for dinner. There are twists on classic Southern dishes, like fried shrimp with a homemade lemon remoulade, plus squid ink bucatini, burgers, a pimento cheese BLT, and jerk mahi mahi. The decor is equally eclectic: there’s a palm tree wallpaper-lined bar across from the modern dining area, and the staff is a fun bunch that’ll eagerly suggest the best cocktails. Ours is the Practice What You Peach, a summery mix of whiskey, sweet tea, peach juice, and lemon." - matt tervooren, nisha vedi pawar, kendal nicole lambert

My server Josue was great outstanding service very personable, suggested the steak, was cooked perfectly! Suggested a drink which also came out promptly and tasted amazing! The other server Iman came over and made sure I didn’t need anything as well overall great experience they both were amazing very welcoming! Will definitely come back The manger Christina was delightful to talk to

LOVE this spot! Comfort food that’s perfect for those with a semi sweet tooth. (Can get busy on a Friday and Saturday night though.) The corn and shrimp fritters (appetizer) were amazing! Like a savory and spicy bread ball with sweet pickled onions. The fried chicken sandwich was also very tasty! Moist chicken and sweet with honey.

Google
Great spot! We come here time and again. Great for brunch with friends. The white bean dip is fantastic, the chicken and waffles were pretty good, I’ve loved the eggs Benedict in the past.

Had a great experience at Mathews with group of people. Food was great, service was great and the atmosphere was great. Our server, Sway, was attentive, patient and fun. Thank you. See pics of the Deviled Eggs, Wings, Black Garlic Mac & Cheese, NY Strip, Short Ribs and the bar.

We visit this place all the time, and the food has been consistently good for the most part no complaints! I usually order the steak and eggs, which are always flavorful. Out of all my visits, I’ve only had one less-than-great steak, and that was during the summer around 3 PM. My fiancé loves the chicken and waffles, the chicken is well-seasoned and flavorful. We also sometimes get the burgers, which are exceptional, and I absolutely love the waffle fries, they’re my favorite! Overall, this place delivers on quality and consistency, which I think is the key to a great restaurant. I have yet to be disappointed!

Google
Out of 6 different orders, spicy lobster pasta stands out(not spicy but, when eaten hot its just great). Not fan of their chicken sandwich specially with that so much sweet coleslaw. Fries were great, wings kind of okey, fried shrimp were no no, loved garlic mashed potatoes, steak was good, mahi mahi was to die for(recommended). Service was allright, kept on waiting for drinks(they were allright too) then bill. Didnt to mind so much but got an order wrong. But they replaced soon(nice service) Atmosphere was brilliant, i would like to sit inside or out both is cool. Overall experience was good, may be limited to some menu items but some fruit drinks awesome.

I recently dined at Matthew's Food and Drink, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, perfect for a relaxed evening out. The staff were incredibly attentive and friendly, making sure we had everything we needed. The food was the highlight of the evening. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. I particularly enjoyed the [insert favorite dish], which was cooked to perfection. The drink selection was equally impressive, with a variety of creative cocktails and a well-curated wine list. Overall, Matthew's Food and Drink exceeded my expectations. The combination of excellent service, delicious food, and a welcoming atmosphere makes it a must-visit. I can't wait to return and try more of their amazing offerings!

Me and my family stopped by this restaurant on a Sunday afternoon for brunch. When we first enter the establishment, we noticed how busy it was, but we were greeted immediately and told that we would be able to get a table in about 10 minutes. The weight was a little under 10 minutes, which was great. We ordered pancakes, that were very fluffy and delicious, The omelette was cooked and seasoned perfectly, and the deviled eggs were great! I do not remember my server name, however, I think Christina, is the manager here. She came up to the table, introduced herself and asked if we needed anything because our server was a little busy. We ended up ordering another round of drinks and she promptly retrieve them and was agreed to help to her team. It was very noticeable that she loves her job, and that just makes the experience so much more pleasant. I would love to come back and try their lunch and dinner! Will be back.

Yelp
Fantastic. The service was great. Lots of seating inside or out. And really good food. The chicken I got was superb. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
This was a fine place to get a local brunch. Me and my Bestie ordered the deviled eggs, burrata, jalapeño grits, steak and eggs, and a side salad to share. The deviled eggs were OK. They were a decent portion size which I appreciated. The burrata was tasty although I feel an extra drizzle of olive oil over the top would've been amazing. We did not like the jalapeño grits and we sent them back, but we're also black and we're pretty particular about our grits. The steak and eggs were solid although though I do feel the steak could've been more flavorful and I thought that chimichurri was a bit strange since it used white onion. Our server was really sweet, she took back the jalapeño grits, no problem, and took it off the bill and she also offered us some ice cream cake because somebody was having a birthday that day so we thought that was really nice and hospitable. The atmosphere was cute, we sat on the patio and it was a beautiful day so we enjoyed the weather out there, we took a quick glance inside and it also looked pretty cute inside there as well. Overall, it seems like a decent enough place to get brunch, although I was not blown away by anything we ordered by any stretch of the imagination.

Yelp
Matthews has become a very trusted go to when I'm looking for lunch or dinner in downtown JC. From the tasty cocktails to the pretty perfect apps, sandwiches and dinners, it hits the spot. I've come for lunch and had the bean veggie burger more than once, dinners where we shared the burrata app and even just for cocktails. On my last trip here for lunch, we shared the shoshito peppers which had MUCH more of a kick than I would normally like. That is to say I was chugging water. But other than that I have never had an appetizer I didn't love here. The veggie burger has somehow become my go to but for good reason! It doesn't just fall apart like your typical bean burger, the fries that come with it or soooo tasty I always eat every last one, it's just a solid lunch. If you want to up your lunch game a little bit get the truffle waffle fries. The space is super cute and cozy with a bar, booths, a few different rooms and an outdoor space. The servers are always so kind and friendly and everything typically comes out quick quick. Enjoy!

Yelp
The brunch fare was fine, but the service was awful. Our server left us alone without any water or menus for 15+ minutes, and when he finally arrived, he was unapologetic, unsmiling and unfriendly. And that attitude never changed throughout our meal. You know when you can really tell someone hates their job? Yeah, this. If you don't care about service, I guess you can't go wrong with either the Chorizo & Sweet Potato Hash, or the large BLT. The decor is country-farm chic, and the corner location in a quaint slice of downtown JC is as picturesque as it gets. Too bad we had Surly Smurf during our visit. Won't be back.

Yelp
Very cute bar. Staff were friendly and quick. We ordered a half version of the cacio e pepe. It's very mushroom-y. Salad was also excellent. Fun cocktails!

Yelp
Shrimp fritters are to die for! 80's Glam still on menu is a nice pour and on happy hour m-f 4-6pm. Ambiance and small plates are delish!

Yelp
A very cute place to have Sunday brunch! My first meal after the Jersey City marathon was right here! We weren't able to put in a reservation beforehand, but we were still able to get seated when we arrived close to noon. I had the sweet potato & andouille sausage hash withOUT the sausage. The server said he could add more brussels sprouts since someone else had requested the same before, and I agreed to it (though I wasn't too hungry and didn't care either way). My meal had a beautiful presentation. The eggs were perfectly poached and there was just enough hollandaise sauce. The brussels sprouts however just seemed undercooked flavor-wise and more could have been done to better their quality. Needless to say, I finished my plate except for the brussels sprouts. All-in-all, a great cafe in an excellent location of Jersey City---well worth the visit!

Yelp
Great location as only 3 blocks from Path. Nice interior. Wait staff very friendly and attentive Good menu with Nice vegan choices as well. I will return definitely.

Yelp
I've visited Matthews a few years ago for brunch and I saw they had a happy hour from 4-6 so it was a perfect opportunity for lunch/drinks with a friend! The decor is very airy and modern farmhouse. Perfect setting to just relax and have conversation. We were seated immediately because it wasn't so busy on a Friday at 3pm. The waiter was very friendly and super attentive. For drinks we had the Manzanita and 80s Glam. I had the 80s Glam and absolutely loved it, especially the fact that it had edible glitter! My friend wasn't too hungry so he just had Shishito Peppers and finished it all. I had the Hot Honey Chicken Sandwich that came with Waffle Fries. Unfortunately I asked for no slaw and it came with it but I just took it out. I think it could've had more flavor because I asked if they had sauce I could put with it bit they didn't have any I liked. Loved the waffle fries! I would probably come back and try dinner.

Yelp
I've been here several times, and the food, service, and ambiance have consistently been great. When in doubt, Mathews is always a good, reliable option.

Yelp
Good cocktails and a decent brunch and dinner menu. Small place and tends to get packed so I recommend a reservation. Staff is accommodating and nice. There is outdoor seating in the summer !

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place as I just moved to Jersey City and am on the hunt for some go to spots. The food here is good, not amazing but the service is where they seriously lacked. For food, we shared the Burrata and Parmesan Truffle Waffle Fries. Both were done well. For my main, I got Steak & Eggs. You can't really go wrong with this so it was pretty good but I've definitely had places where the meat was a lot more tender/fresh. The service is where I had my main issue. The amount of times we had to ask for our water to be refilled and to get our check was ridiculous. Every time we asked for something, they wouldn't be back for another 15 minutes. Needless to say, this is not going to be my go to.

Yelp
Saturday 3pm Tough to find a place in Jersey city that fits what I'm looking for as I've been to loads of brunch places with the exception of Matthews. This place especially the decor is cozy and well decorated . As soon as I walked in , I was greeted and seated immediately. I'm sure it was busier a few hours prior , it was may 1/3 occupied when I got there . It started slow ( it took 5 minutes before I was offered water , i only mentioned it as my throat was dry and needed some beverage ). Once we've passed that, it was smooth sailing . I ordered one of three best fried chicken sandwich I've had , it was a good size, crispy and served between burger patties with cabbage slaw ( balances the fried chicken ) and pickles . My friend had the hash and chorizo and lava cake ( very good , moist and just the perfect amount of chocolate ) . I hope to remain open as this is becoming my go when I come to Jersey city to catch up with friends . Bar Area is conducive and enticing for next time .

Yelp
Cute and a cozy bar in Jersey city. Went there for the first time. The bar tender was nice and her service was faster. This bar has got some really nice cocktails and I got to try their fall drink which was a little citrus and also tried their 80s glam which is a gin based cocktail. Both were nice but my favorite was the 80s glam. We went on a Saturday evening and it was not crowded. There were enough seating available.

Yelp
Everything was delicious and came very quickly! We got the White Bean Puree - which was hands down the best thing we ordered - and I got the Jerk Mahi Mahi and my fiancé got the Matthew's Burger which he loved. We also got the "The One That Got Sorbet" drink and an Amaretto Sour. The Amaretto Sour was one of the best we've ever had. We had a nice time!
google avatar

Yelp
Giving it a good review as its a great quick place to grab dinner. Was able to make reservations with an hour notice on a weekday. Got there and there were no issues. Drinks were good and food was amazing! Definitely had that extra flavor that you cant get at home or a chain restaurant. Was very satisfied. Aesthetics of the place is low light and calm , so perfect for any date night and a quick drink. Ill add the Brussels sprouts are really good from here and should be recommended as an appetizer.

Yelp
Solid spot depending on what you get. I thought the roasted chicken was amazing. So delish w a hint of sweetness in the glaze. My friends burger was soggy, wouldn't order again. Place itself was quite small, dim lighting and quarters were close enough to hear the next tables whole dinner conversation. Staff was very friendly and attentive. Possibly would come back bc the chicken was buss.

Yelp
Great spot for brunch in Jersey city, close to grove street. We found the decor absolutely lovely with refreshing plants all over the restaurant. The cute and pretty vibes would make this the perfect spot for a girls day or a quick date or even a casual baby shower or birthday! Service was quick and nice. The staff were SO kind and friendly. Many vegetarian options! We loved the burrata and toast appetizer. Everything tasted fresh and light.

Yelp
I have been here a few times for dinner and absolutely love this place. The decor, the staff and the food are all fantastic. I've tried a few pasta dishes and entrees. Would absolutely recommend the baked 1/2 chicken entree and the short rib ragu. The drinks (both cocktail and mocktail) are also great. They do a nice happy hour where cocktails are $9 as well. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
For my first time visiting Jersey City, I sure am glad that Matthews was recommended to me as a must stop destination for brunch. You walk in and are immediately taken back by all of the beautiful flowers and greenery that they have set up throughout the shop. They have a nice menu, which has some classic brunch dishes. The food itself was good, but it wasn't anything you might be able to find at another diner offering brunch. Our table had a variety of pancakes, eggs, and even chicken and waffles - and it all generally hit the mark. I had the C&W, and personally felt like the chicken could have been dressed up a bit more. It was moist & juicy, but flavor of the chicken seasoning lacked. The egg was also pretty close to being cooked over-hard, so the yolk didn't have much spread (despite it being sunny-side up). They also have a nice drink menu as well and I would recommend trying their bloody Mary. As you were sitting there, enjoying your meal, you could easily see that Matthews has a great reputation because it is hustling with customers coming in and out the entire time. I mention that to say it might be wise to ensure that you have reservations if you do intend on doing.

Yelp
Came here for drinks late Saturday night but the place was fully booked. The staff were friendly enough to let us hang around the bar. Love the Amaretto cocktail and their beer selection. Place was well decorated and loved their ambience. It gets crowded as time passes.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place while searching for a new brunch spot. And we'll definitely be back soon. Unable to decide what to get (because everything sounds amazing) we shared a number of plates for the meal. Jalapeno grits: Delicious Deviled eggs: Really flavorful Burrata: Star of the meal, five stars Rosemary garlic fries: Fantastic Everything was great and hit the spot. But the burrata was definitely the star and I highly recommend it. They have a great selection of cocktails too. I tried I few I wouldn't normally go for and was pleasantly surprised by how good they were. On top of that, the service didn't miss a beat and was attentive for the entire meal, even though the restaurant was pretty busy. Definitely come here for brunch. But I will be checking out their other menus too.

Yelp
Bright casual comfortable busy friendly upbeat bistro with very creative delicious cocktails (eg, whiskey coffee with walnut liquore) and crowd-pleasing menu to match. Perfect crisp thick-cut bacon as a side, lemon ricotta pancakes, best deviled eggs I've ever had, crusty bread with it, sirloin steak and any style eggs with chimichurri, a very good blt, good Colombe coffee. Just the way it sounds: they've nailed excellent simplicity! A keeper.

Yelp
South African chenin blanc was delish. Ordered arugula salad with egg whites and chicken sandwiches. Have to say skip arugula without Grain but pleasantly surprised with that side of egg whites. I think it was glazed with butter or something... just melts in your mouth perfectly cooked! Bravo to the skillet skills

Yelp
Mathews Food & Drink is a nice, quaint spot that has a low-key, down-to-earth vibe. It is located on Grove Street in Jersey City, NJ. My cousin selected this place for us to have Brunch yesterday and it was a fabulous choice. It is a few blocks down from the Newark bound Path Train which is o ly a hop, skip and jump away from World Trade Center if you are coming from NYC. Take the Path Train from World Trade Center to Grove which is two stops away. Before you know it you are on Grove Street which has a good selection of places to eat, hang out, etc. Mathews was in full swing during the Brunch Service. This establishment plays some really good pop music, r&b music, etc. They also have clean bathrooms w/ beautiful bathroom wallpaper. Mathews Food & Drink has both Indoor and Outdoor Dining. The Outdoor Patio is near the front entrance and once you walk inside the cool, vibrant bar area is there. We were able to be seated inside and had the best Server Estella. She was kind, courteous and was oatient with us as we had questions regarding menu items. She had such a sunny disposition and always asked us if we needed any additonal things during our dining experience. She was working very hard....she definitely deserves a raise. We definitely appreciated her exuding great customer service. We had the following for Brunch - Avocado Toast w/ Salad -My Cousin said it was good. Deviled Eggs - Creamy and Marvelous Cheddar Jalapeno Grits - Delicious Lemon Ricotta Pancakes - Fantastic Sides of Bacon - Nice and Crispy "And Just Like That" Cocktails- Vidka, Rose', Orange Liqueur, Lime Juice & Cranberry Citrus Bitters. We each had one and we enjoyed them - Refreshing. "Holy Smokes Great Fruit" Cocktail - Mezcal, Aperol, Black Walnut Bitters, Blood Orange Grapefruit, Honey & Liime. I enjoyed the Mezcal and other ingredients which gave it an interesting flavor. I look forward to coming back at some point to tey other things on the menu. Hours of Operation- Mon & Tues. 4pm-9pm Wed. - 12pm-9pm Thurs & Fri - 12pm -10pm Sat. - 11am - 10pm Sun. - 11am - 9pm Bruch is on Saturdays and Sundays - 11am - 3:30pm Happy Hour - Wed -Fri. 4pm-6pm - $5 Beer & $5 Wine and Half-Priced Cocktails. Yelp
Came with my boyfriend for brunch and it was A+. We've been here a while ago for dinner but I can't quite remember the experience. I got the steak and eggs with chimichurri and he got the fried chicken sandwich. He said that his was good and mine was delicious. They side it with salad and shishito peppers which is the perfect combination. The restaurant itself is well designed and packed. Our server, Matthew, was lovely and attentive.

Yelp
Food was delicious!! Came here as a group of 4 on a Saturday night, made reservations Monday. We got a really cute round corner booth at the place which fit us perfectly for a double date. Our waiter was so kind and helpful. Loved the appetizers and entrees were a hit. Would've done dessert but just wasn't up for it.

Yelp
We went to Mathews for brunch and had an enjoyable time. The portion sizes are pretty big here and I am glad that I decided to take it slow and order just an appetizer and an entree. To start, I had a latte and I also ordered the burrata. The latte was just what you would expect. The burrata had some minor touches that made it different from what I am used to. The burrata was served on a bed of greens, had figs on the sides, and was then drizzled with honey and had salt sprinkled on the center. Individually, the different ingredients of the dish were good, but together, they tasted amazing. My only complaint was that there was too much salt that was sprinkled on the burrata. I had to scrape some of the salt off of the burrata because it was just too salty for my tastes. For entrees we ordered the Country Scramble, Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, and a side of bacon. The Country Scramble was great. It was scrambled eggs with herbs and aged cheddar, served with sourdough bread and a bit of salad. The bacon that we ordered were pretty sizable and crispy and were just right. The star of the brunch were definitely the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes. I had four big pancakes that were served with a berry compote and honey pecan butter. I personally did not have much of the butter because I usually eat my pancakes without butter. However, the berry compote on the pancakes were a great combination! The compote seeped into the first two layers of pancakes and were perfectly sweet. I did not have to use any syrup for my top two pancakes. For the bottom two pancakes, I did use syrup and that tasted just as good, as well. The pancakes were really filling. Overall, Mathews was a great brunch experience and I would recommend it to people that are looking for brunch in the area.

Yelp
4.5 stars Mathews Food & Drink had been on my list for so long, as I had heard so many terrific things about it, and it really lived up to its reputation. The restaurant was quaint and had a Victorian-style vibe, but we decided to sit outside in their streetery to enjoy the pleasant weather. Our server was professional, efficient, and very friendly. The cocktail list was lengthy and varied, making it hard to select something. I opted for the "Holy Smokes, Great Fruit!" The playfully named drink was supposed to contain mezcal, Aperol, black walnut bitters, blood orange bitters, grapefruit, honey, and lime. However, I requested that the bartender eliminate the added honey to make the drink less sweet, and it was not really missed, as the grapefruit provided plenty of tart sweetness itself. The mezcal also infused a contrasting smokiness. It was delicious! When it came to the food, my boyfriend really enjoyed his 8-oz., Pat La Frieda Hamburger and accompanying waffle fries, which were nice crispy but needed a bit more salt. I had been debating between two of the fish options on the menu - the mahi and the salmon. When I asked the server for her preference, she immediately called out the mahi, making my selection a no-brainer. The Mahi Mahi had been encrusted in jerk seasoning, adding a ton of heat and spice to the dish. It was served over generous amounts of curried chickpeas and creamy, Coconut Anson Mills Carolina Rice. It was a hearty and flavorful entrée. My dinner at Mathews Food & Drink was delightful! Their menu had so many intriguing options that I will need to go back to try some others.

Yelp
This is a cool looking restaurant with neat wallpaper and a southern hospitality feel to it. We came for dinner with another couple. We got the burrata, which come with a fig side. The salty and savory combination was well received. We also got the chili's. They literally had me looking for fafda and jalebi (ikyky). We got the wings as well. The portion size is only 5 pieces, and the spice level could have been kicked up a notch. I got the chicken sandwich. It was well cooked but had too much Cole slaw overtaking each bite. It came with a side of waffle fries. They were nothing exciting, but we also got a table side order with truffle sauce. Those hit the spot. The drinks were on point. The smoky old fashioned is covered and brought to the table. Also, the bitters are homemade adding to the unique flavors. I also got a pear mojito like drink. It was also pretty good. I think the table favorite was the chocolate cake desert. It was devoured! The service was where this restaurant fell way short. The waitor literally lost the ticket, and 20 minutes later, he realized we had no entrees. He was apologetic and tried to rush out the order but did not comp us for any part of the meal. Also, for the price, I think there are other gems in JC worth trying.

Yelp
Ordered: Mango & Dreams Mocktail (~$13): Lyre's Italian orange, mango, grapefruit, simple & lime Southern Fried Rock Shrimp (~$16): lightly breaded shrimp with coleslaw and house lemon remoulade Country Scramble (~$14): with aged cheddar, fresh herbs, sourdough, and market greens Chicken & Waffle (~$17): with fried egg, crispy chicken thigh, and hot honey Aya's take: Such a great brunch spot with a super cute vibe! I definitely recommend making reservations or stopping by when they open at 11am to get seated quickly. The Country Scramble and Chicken & Waffle were both delicious! I was super impressed with the soft scramble of the first dish and the crispy chicken thigh with hot honey of the second dish. I wasn't too crazy about the waffle itself. The Mocktail was refreshing but small; and basically the same price as a cocktail. Mocktails should be half the price considering the most expensive ingredient isn't included. Street parking wasn't too bad on a Sunday before 11am but it did fill up by 1pm. Definitely recommend for your next brunch!

Yelp
I remember bookmarking this spot once I saw their edible glitter 80's glam cocktail! Fast forward to 2022, I finally visited TWICE! On my first visit, I ordered the 80's glam cocktail along with the beet and red bean vegetable burger. The cocktail was good, but not my cup of tea. The burger was so good and definitely freshly made in house. On my second visit, I ordered the vegetable burger again along with their truffle waffle fries (a must have) and the pink pear, don't care cocktail. The cocktail was super refreshing I will definitely order it again! All in all, Mathews is a great spot to brunch or enjoy happy hour. The ambiance is bright and welcoming. I can't wait to come back and try out other menu items!

Yelp
Just a short walk from the Grove Street PATH station, Mathews Food & Drink is an easy and convenient choice for Sunday brunch. I made a reservation in advance and was seated promptly upon arrival, even though a member of my party was late. The weekend brunch menu overlaps with some of the items served during weekday lunch, meaning there are a variety of sandwiches available in addition to the standard egg and pancake options. I'm a fan of brunch food, so I went with scrambled eggs and a side of sweet potato Brussels sprout home fries (partially because I wanted to find out what those were). The creative part of me was slightly disappointed they were roasted pieces of sweet potato and Brussels sprout, rather than some kind of sweet potato-Brussel sprout-potato hybrid. Fortunately, they still tasted good and paired well with the scrambled eggs, so I didn't mind. I can't speak to the interior decor too much, as I sat outside. I did notice that the front of the restaurant is brightly lit, thanks to the big windows near the entrance, so I wouldn't have minded dining indoors if the weather hadn't cooperated.

Yelp
Great American brunch spot in downtown Jersey City for drinks and food. I got the Brunch Double Cheese Burger ($18), which had two smashed beef patties to go with nicely melted American cheese, a fried egg (nicely over easy), a delicious sweet and savory sauce, and the sesame buns - very satisfying if you are looking for something more substantial. The only thing was that they didn't ask me how I wanted to burger cooked, which was a bit odd, but luckily for them, they cooked it to roughly a medium level, which is what I would've asked for anyways. The burger normally comes with fries, and our waitress said that I could choose parmesan truffle waffle fries, so naturally I did. They were delicious- good truffle flavor with a generous amount of parmesan and nicely crispy on the outside. However, what she didn't tell me was that this would be an additional $5... not a big deal, but still something she should've made me aware of. I also tried the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes ($16), which was delicious- fluffy pancakes that were also moist throughout. It was a stack of 4 decently sized pancakes, so a very solid portion size. There was a good amount of blueberry compote on there, although they were a bit stingy with the honey pecan butter. It of course came with maple syrup as well. To drink, I got a Mango & Dreams Mocktail ($14), which was a tasty fruity mocktail with orange, mango, grapefruit, and lime flavors. Despite the name, I think the grapefruit and lime flavors were definitely the strongest. My main complaint about this drink though was the portion size / value. The portion size was very small (especially if you consider the amount of ice in that small glass) for $14. The restaurant itself is a bit on the small size, but still had several tables available for brunch when we arrived on a Sunday early afternoon. I would say it has sort of a Southern American kind of vibe with a bright color scheme, plentiful natural sunlight, and a bar area with (fake) vines/flowers overhead. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. The service speed was pretty quick, although it did take them a bit longer than expected to just get us some water to start. Overall, I would say that Mathews Food & Drink is a very solid 4 star brunch spot. I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for an American brunch place in Jersey City.

Yelp
Servers are polite and they have outdoor seating, always a plus. You can get a nice breeze from the open sides too. And they have dog bowls! I was trying to eat a little healthier so it was awesome to see I could just order the sides a la cart and make that a meal for myself. Eggs were fried perfectly over easy and very runny, bacon was crispy and avocado was fresh (although it could have used maybe another day to ripen). No cold brew but iced coffee was tasty too.

Yelp
Very cute ambience, flowers everywhere, plates and on the table. I started with the disco thyme which is made with vodka, thyme liqueur, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, agave, champagne. It was decent, but just a lot of flavors where one was a enough - then switched to sauv blanc, really cute presentation of the drink though! Dinner we got a country chopped salad, came with blue cheese, egg, tomato, bacon, haricots, and the dressing was garlic dressing. Very good!!! Perfect flavorings and the dressing is so good, I'm usually not a fan of blue cheese but I enjoyed this one. I can't rave more about the dressing, I was a little skeptical that it would be overpowering but it was PERFECT!!!! Like I would buy it if they bottled it! Skirt steak, with chimichurri, grilled asparagus, greens, agave lime vinaigrette. It was pretty good, but I wasn't blown away by it.. but pretty tasty. It came with a little side salad and grilled asparagus. Chimichurri was really good. Black truffle cacio e pepe was sooo good!! Creamy, pasta cooked perfecting!! I will 10000% be back!

Yelp
Decided to come here for brunch with my friend. We had to be on a waitlist and they said it would be an hour, but we went for a walk around the corner and they ended up texting us that our table was ready 15 minutes later! What a great surprise. We were only two people, so maybe that made it easier to squeeze us it but we were very grateful lol The staff was friendly, and gave us pleanty of time to decide what we wanted, without feeling rushed or pressured. The food arrived pretty quickly. I ordered the lemon ricotta pancakes, and I really enjoyed them! I'm normally more of a waffle person, but I would definitely get these again. We had a good brunch experience here. I would like to try some of the drinks they have in the future.

Yelp
Love Matthews- great prices and good food- personal favs are the short rib ragu and chicken sandwich with truffle fries. Good drinks that are reasonably priced for the area as well

Yelp
We came here for brunch on a Saturday. Their food option was limited and the quality of their food and coffee was average. We sat inside and the ambiance is nice. The service was a bit slow. Will likely try other options before considering to come back again.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday afternoon for brunch with a girlfriend. It was the last minute meeting but we were able to still get a reservation for 1:15. I got there late trying to look for parking. Parking is not great at all in this area. But once I got there my girlfriend was already seated and we proceeded to order my drink. I looked over the drink menu and I saw something that said Pear something don't care. It was not just very pretty it was absolutely yummy. Strong enough and just enough sweetness. After a few more minutes our waitress came back and we ordered our brunch. I had the hot honey chicken and waffles and my girlfriend had the deviled eggs as well as the poached eggs with the hash. She seemed to enjoy her food so I'm assuming it was good. My fried chicken was a piece of chicken breast which I did not expect. And the waffle was a good size. However I did not taste any hot honey on my chicken whatsoever. That was disappointing for me. But overall nice place good service good food, great drinks.

Yelp
A very quaint, welcoming restaurant. Loved their brunch, service was excellent. So glad my cousin made an reservation, as this place gets packed. There are only 6-8 seats at the bar if you don't have a reservation and they were all filled. I ordered the lox breakfast and was so good, not to salty. I don't remember my drinks name, but it was lovely. I definitely will be back here to try more, their menu has many options.

Yelp
Went here with a friend for dinner and drinks. The vibe is really nice in the evenings for dinner and staff was friendly. The food was decent, not the most amazing but was good enough to satisfy and not damped the experience. I really enjoyed my cocktail as well. Will plan to be back!

Yelp
Went here for my boyfriend's birthday with my parents and we had a great experience! I had made a reservation in advanced and we were seated immediately. We started with drinks and got Fall in a Glass and Tickled Pink. For appetizer, we had the mussels and burrata. The burrata was really yummy and the flavors of the truffle honey, figs, and pumpkin seeds came together really well. For my entree, I ordered the vegetable burger with truffle parm fries. The burger patty itself fell apart pretty easily but the bun was good and so were the toppings. The fries were amazing and crispy! The rest of the party got the truffle cacio e pepe, mahi mahi, and squid ink bucatini - everyone seemed satisfied with their meal. My boyfriend and I always walk past this restaurant meaning to try it and we are glad we did! I would come back to try their brunch

Yelp
It's ok. The menu is huge. Didn't know what to get. I love seafood and ordered the broiled seafood combo. The salmon was delicious, the shrimp were huge, the crab cake was a bit dense. The mashed potatoes seemed like they were from a box, the peas had no seasoning, no butter. Everything was good but nothing amazing. The service was great and the staff were fun. It was a bit warm inside. They were busy, but the service was still good. It looked like a cute diner.

Yelp
Not amazing, not bad. I probably would come back for the atmosphere and vibes (great playlist!) but the food wasn't anything that WOW'd me. The fried shrimp appetizer was probably the best thing we ate, and I unfortunately didn't grab a pic of it Short rib ragu - has apples in it that made it a little to sweet for my liking Steak - too salty & Just Like That drink - amazing!! Again, I would come back, but for the price I would only come back once/twice a year instead of more regularly (unlike similarly priced Latham House, where I find myself going time and time again!!).

Yelp
Great spot for brunch! Mathews has a super cute interior with great ambiance. The restaurant was bustling when I went for brunch a month ago. The staff was very nice and did not rush us. Food was good as well. I got the Lemon ricotta pancakes which were delicious but could probably use a bit more berry compote. I would definitely go back again if I was in the area.

Yelp
One of the best restaurants in the area. I've been here several times and have tried almost half the menu. Everything is amazing including the drinks. I recommend the brussel sprouts. Make reservations in advance on the weekends as it does get busy! Overall its a nice calm ambiance.
