Where to Drink Margs and Give Back in Detroit | Eater

"Opened in 2024, Mati brings modern Greek flair to the vibrant Detroit Greektown restaurant and nightlife scene. The Mediterranean-inspired menu boasts Greek standards such as saganaki opa, the always crowd-pleasing flaming kasseri cheese, and spanakopita as well as pasta, steaks, and the mixed grill platter, Mati’s most popular dish. Make sure to check out “bouzouki night,” a lively evening featuring Greek musicians and dancing. Pro tip: Enjoy a cocktail (may we suggest the Mykonos Margarita, with Astral, triple sec, lime, and sugar rim), from the rooftop patio overlooking the hustle and bustle of Monroe Street." - Vox Creative

Google
A most delicious anniversary dinner at MATI. The place is contemporary and more in line with current food found away from tourist areas in Greece. We had the trio dip to start and he had the lamb shank which was butter tender and I opted for the branzino deboned tableside. Totally amazing. The staff was super attentive and fantastic. Worth the traffic issues.

Google
We had a party of 10, and they easily accommodated us. We ordered several appetizers and dinners, I enjoyed the octopus and calamari appetizers and the branzino was excellent. Our server was extremely efficient and attentive.

Google
Gyro & fries were good and relatively reasonably priced considering how upscale this place presents itself. However, it does not come with adjacently considerate staff. Maintenance worker hired by this establishment was wearing inappropriate clothing and acting poorly. Not to mention that one of his articles of clothing contained hate speech. Secondly, the wait staff less knowledgeable than expected about the rules of the rooftop & were not very attentive. Food was good though. Would get carry out.

Google
We'd had reservations elsewhere, however they wouldn't honor them, and I'm so glad that happened! We were seated immediately, our server, Anna (I think), was amazing, she went above and beyond. All three of our meals and two appetizers were perfect! Drinks were delicious as well, we will definitely go back and I have to say this is one of my new favorites!

Google
Best Greek I have ever had. I have been to Greece and never tasted such good food. The manager or owner was great. Waitress was amazing. Definitely coming back many more times.

Google
Excellent!! The vibe here can't be matched. The ambiance is great, but the food was better. The menu had an assortment of food options and they had a pretty big selection of wines as well. We'll be back soon!

Google
I have been here at least one a week for dinner on my way home from work. I cannot get enough of the lamb shank. The mashed potatoes are to die for, the cocktails are adorable, and the service is great. Management seems to take a lot of pride in this operation and let me tell you about the ambiance! It’s fantastic! Also they started a “wine Wednesday” where you can get half off any bottles of wine on the menu. The house red is my favorite. Definitely will be spending my birthday here.

Google
Impeccable service. The gyro was so good, probably my new fav. Also had the watermelon feta salad- amazing. Drinks were good and beautiful establishment.

Yelp
I came here for dinner with my bachelorette party. The girls really treated us for my special occasion, I felt very taken care of and I love the Mediterranean beach club vibe of the restaurant. Every detail seemed really thought out and chic. The food was really reasonably priced for the large portion sizes. I ordered the lemon chicken piccata and the sauce was tart and somewhat light. There were a perfect amount of capers and the chicken and rice were well cooked. There was construction going on around the restaurant the weekend we visited which made parking/entry a little tricky.

Yelp
Let's just say not bad for downtown Detroit, the area was under construction but I was able to find an awesome Greek Resturant with a decor like no other. It's a great place for groups and small get togetherness. 1. The bartender was super friendly and very accommodating. She made a few suggestions based on what I told her for food and beverage, keep up the awesomeness. 2. The food wasn't too bad, I had orders the swordfish entree and the kabab trios. (See pictures for yourself) The swordfish was a little dry but not too had, the lamb kabab came out perfectly cooked and seasoned, the chicken was alright, wish the used dark meat instead of white meat, and the steak kabab were over cooked, a medium rare would have killed it.

Yelp
Cool little bar with very good vibes. This is in greektown on the corner so you really can miss it. It's been awhile since I've been home and in greektown so this was new to me. But personally I thought this was a really good thing to happen to come across. The bartenders were super cool. I have zero complaints about that. They made drinks that were custom to what I was looking for and they had good conversation. Outside of that. We had a really good time just kicking it at the bar. We actually went back a couple of times on the same weekend. The building itself, all the decorations are beautiful. They have some wine in the back so I know that there's a wine list. That's probably pretty cool. There's plenty of space and plenty of seating outside of the bar even though the bar is actually a pretty decent size. There's actually an upstairs as well, but at the same time the upstairs is only open during certain hours. So keep that in mind. If you come around night time, you'll definitely notice things happening on the top. They have a really good happy hour so I want to make sure I put that out there. First time I went was happy hour, it was really good. I didn't do any food but we did do some martinis because they were discounted. Although I would have paid for a price for them that day too. I would definitely spend a block on this spot. I actually want to go ahead and try upstairs just to see what it looks like and see what the vibes are. Not sure what kind of crap that is but I had a really good time and I can't trust that enough.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food and great service! We sat at the bar and Alyssa took great care of us. She was kind, attentive and very informative. Highly recommend the spanakopita and the housemade baklava!

Yelp
First time here since it has been changed from the Delmar. Major upgrade! The ambiance is beautiful and modern with cozy vibes. Perfect for a night out with friends or a cute date night. Let's get into the food: Appetizers: We had the Greek Salad, which we enjoyed the fresh veggies and delicious Greek dressing. The Fried Calamari with Chipotle Aioli. Then, the Trio Dip with Hummus, Spicy Feta, Tzatziki with Pita. All of dips were delicious! Main course: Seafood Pasta: flavorful, seasoned to perfection. You can literally see the flavor. I asked for no octopus but I think they forgot my scallops as well. All I had was shrimp, but it was still delightful. Branzino: buttery, succulent and melts in your mouth! Also, it was interesting to watch the deboning process. Braised Lamb: The lamb was extremely tender and over the mashed potatoes in red wine reduction made it incredibly rich and comforting. Overall, everything we had was 10/10. I would definitely recommend and return to try more on the menu.

Yelp
Open. Considerating it's a holiday that's cool. Not a ton of ppl in here. The music is nice not too loud and a mix of everyone some from the tigers game and some from movement, Everyone seems really busy for no reason or excited to check on me. I might leave honestly. I hate when I come alone and no one helps or acknowledges you. I did leave. I was provided water. The bartenders weren't interested or said hello. They were more interested in talking to each other. Everyone who was helped looked like they were enjoying their food. It's just way too expensive in there for lack of service.

Yelp
Really on the fence about this place. Some food was excellent, some was marginal..and the wait staff varied from pleasant and welcoming to rude and neglectful. We were seated by very upbeat staff (including a nice gentleman who I assume is the manager/owner) at a nice table in a modern, upscale atmosphere. Then we waited an inordinate amount of time for the waiter to take our order and had another long wait to get our drinks, once ordered When the food arrived, the grilled octopus was fantastic--prepared perfectly, as were the scallops...both were excellent! The braised lamb shank, on the other hand, was not: three of us ordered that and three were disappointed with them as they were dry and, in spots, somewhat leathery. The shanks were served on a bed of allegedly mashed potatoes...one of us found a significant chunk of undercooked potato in her plate, which even further detracted from the dish. I've had braised lamb shanks at Greek restaurants across the land and around the world, and these were simply not up to snuff. Our waiter presented as if she barely had time to speak with us, even though the restaurant was not busy at the time. She did not earn the 20% tip that is automatically added to the bill, even for our little 4-top! I get that waiting tables is tough, having done it myself, but this practice, of automatically adding 20% to the meal, rewards mediocrity and by itself is enough to keep us from returning to Mati. Pay your wait staff a living wage and let us decide what the tip looks like. Add in the unfortunate lamb shanks, and you can understand the two star rating.

Yelp
We visited Mati in Detroit for dinner tonight for the first time and it was surprisingly delicious! We Sat at the bar and the bartender, Kendall, made the best old fashioned (used the good Luxardo cherries not the cheap ones). It was delightful discussing bourbons and gin with her, as she was very knowledgeable. I ordered the chicken medallions, and they were nice and thin, very tender, and flavorful. It was almost too much for me to finish, but they were so good I didn't want to stop. My husband had the sword steak and said it was fantastic. The place is new, very clean, with a fun casual vibe. Highly recommended.

Yelp
I only did the rooftop bar here. I did not get to try the food yet. The rooftop is very cool. It's nice and spacious. There's a big bar. There's lots of seating area. You just go to the bar and order. The bartenders were all nice. The DJ was really good. This is a great place to hang out.

Yelp
Ahhh the old Delmar.... You'd never recognize it. You can see every bit of renovation because this spot is absolutely beautiful. Sat at the bar per norm and had my Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest of the year. The music pumping electronic music, the staff buzzing around completing drink orders, and Lions football on the horizon on a crisp early not quite fall day. It was beautiful. The staff was absolutely spectacular. The restaurant was actually ready for the day and was fully staffed, never had to wait for anything. Oktoberfest at my neck and call. Seafood pasta was ordered and seafood pasta was eaten and it was absolutey OMG Yummy!!!!!!! - did you see how many exclamation points? So damn good. Aesthetically pleasing and fantastically delicious. What more could you ask for. They do have a rooftop patio, didn't make my way up there but it looks lovely from street level. Great experience!

Yelp
We visited MATI for the first time in Detroit last night. The food was decent, but the experience was overshadowed by staff. Our server came to the table and did not introduce herself nor greet us at all. She simply asked what we wanted to drink. When she came back I asked if she was our server for the night and she blandly said yes. Her poor attitude would not have upset me except for the fact that when we did order she was not the one to bring the food out to us. And once our food came, she didn't come back to our table for 30 minutes. The restaurant had a lot of potential but the staff left my boyfriend and I very disappointed. The bill then had a 20% gratuity attached to it and we realized that is why she was so lazy. Why do your job if you know you'll get the tip no matter what?

Yelp
We were walking by and noticed that the old sports bar that used to be here has changed! What a totally different vibe! The inside was absolutely gorgeous! I wasn't crazy about my drink but that was my own fault. The servers were all white nice. We split some seafood pasta and I was still hungry so we ended up getting fries too. We really enjoyed it here and would definitely come back!

Howard F.

Yelp
Nice family Greek restaurant. My wife and I split a lamb shank, Greek salad, and Hortas which is tasty vegetable dish. The lamb was succulent and delicious. The meat almost fell of the bone it was so tender. The wait staff was very friendly and accommodating. A real winner in Downtown Detroit!

Yelp
One of the best restaurants I've tried in a long time. Everything we tried was AMAZING. My favorite now is the alfredo pasta dish. The decor inside is top notch too with a friendly and attentive staff. You can get a comfy table or grab a seat at bar and have dinner. They now take casino comps from Greektown Casino/Penn/Hollywood. Enjoy.

Yelp
Great place, all of our food was great. Service was perfect as well. We did order the calamari and I thought the portion size was small, but other than that everything was great. Would go back

Yelp
Our meal at MATI was honestly one of the best meals I've had in a while. Everything was 10/10. The meat platter & the Greek salad were our FAVS. Also, the service was impeccable. Our server was Sait & he was amazing. Ambiance, beautiful and super clean and modern. They also have a DJ. I will definitely be back & bring my friends and family!

Yelp
This place is super nice! The ambiance is above the bar, they spared no expense to ensure it was very upscale looking. We arrived for a drink at the bar and sat down to a pile of someone's trash the server never cleared. The server was nice and whipped up our cocktails. Then we didn't see her for some time. We wanted another drink but just crickets. We flagged down another guy who responded "what do you need"? The end of the night our bill included gratuity. This was an unwelcome surprise as it seemed to us they weren't in a hurry to help then we are forced gratuity. Either way we would have tipped more than they imposed and we were left with a cringey feeling that made us decide we probably won't go back. When I asked about it she smiled and said that's how they do it in Greek town. Seems mid for a place going for a classy vibe.

Yelp
Located in the Heart of Greektown! Mati is a place that feels as Special as the Meal your about to Enjoy

Yelp
Really nice spot that we went to happy hour at. Had a few drinks and apps. Food was really good and the service was great. I'd like to come back and try more of the menu in the future.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful first experience at MATI Greektown!! Everything was wonderful the drinks, food, ambiance, service, all of the above. Make this restaurant your next stop when you're in Detroit. Our server Sati and his assistant Jimmy were wonderful and made our dinner experience even better! Don't miss out on the baklava it was the best we've ever had. Thank you MATI for a great dinner experience, we will be back :)

Yelp
Honestly, it's a cool atmosphere and ambiance, but the service was very slow, the host was sort of rude when we got there. We were a larger party and had reservations. When we arrived we told them that we were probably going to be down 2 people and the gentleman was irritated and said that it's such a busy weekend, so they'll probably have to take some of our tables and chairs for the important people in from out of state. It made no sense and really made us feel unimportant and dismissed. The restaurant was literally dead by the time we ordered apps, so that was unnecessary. The waitress was overwhelmed and had no care that we were waiting so long for our food. She ended up getting many orders wrong, the birthday girl got her food after we all finished, she ended up not eating and taking it to go. My husband's steak was a bad cut, all fat and did not taste like quality meat. The drinks were good though.

Yelp
The trio dip was fantastic as was the arugula watermelon feta salad. The seafood pasta was dry and the seafood overcooked based on other seafood pastas I have eaten.

Yelp
We had been fans of Pegasus for decades. The management there has high standards and knows what genuine Greek food is. Unfortunately, the service and food quality has been declining for years, so we thought we would try Mati, which is quite new. Assuming we have the same exemplary service and top-quality food that we experienced on our first foray, we will not be returning to Pegasus. The host at Mati seated us quickly and cheerfully, neither of which has happened at Pegasus in a decade. We were seated in a comfy clean booth, which is not something we had ever seen at Pegasus. Nina was a superstar waitress, giving us her patience, cheerfulness and helpfulness from start to finish, and her timing on taking our order, bringing us drinks, food and asking if we were ready for the bill were impeccable. I hate to continue to say less than positive things about a place we had enjoyed for so many years, but the service at Pegasus can't compare to Mati. When it came to the drinks at Mati, they were all reasonably priced and, the size of a pour of wine was generous. The food hands-down was more delicious than Pegasus, and I don't even feel comfortable comparing it. We've always thought the fries and saganaki at Pegasus were good until we had them at Mati. What a difference! The gyro meat is a 10 out of 10, the meat skewers were seasoned and cooked deliciously, the lambchops were fantastic. This is what you want from a Greek meal, or any meal. The food prices were on par with what you would expect, and if where they are a few dollars more than what you might expect, you are getting delicious, quality food that you will enjoy, instead of regretting and possibly feeling was a waste to order. Our only fear is that Mati would become well-known as a great place to go and be tough to get into in the future.

Farimah N.

Yelp
Seafood pasta and shrimp scampi was delicious. Branzino was ok and kind of flavorless. Drinks were good and strong.

Reema O.

Yelp
What an amazing experience! We're still raving about the food! We had the grilled octopus, Greek salad, meat platter, palamino pasta, and Greek potatoes. Everything was so delicious and had so much flavor. The service also topped off the amazing experience. Our server, Sait, was great, along with one of the owners, Zois. The vibe was also nice, there was a DJ, mood lighting, and good atmosphere. Price was average but really good for how great the food was. I'd definitely recommend Mati for your next outing!

Yelp
The fact that they take reservations was a big reason we decided to try this place. So glad we did - we had such an enjoyable dining experience! We had a table of 5 and our server Jimmy was the best! He was fun, entertaining, attentive and friendly. We had the Spanakopita, which had the lightest crust - it just melted in our mouths. The meat in the Gyro was so flavorful and extremely tender. Great vibe and fun atmosphere with the garage doors that open up to the street. We highly recommend this Greektown dining spot!

Yelp
The aesthetic and decorations super cute and cozy. The drinks are also delicious. The food is ok nothing really special but the service is great

Bridget B.

Yelp
Food was excellent. From start to finish our server Nina was very attentive even though she had quite a few other tables (busy night after Lions's game. The music was a little bit too loud for our liking but it was geared for Lions' fans.

Yelp
Decided to stop in for some food and drinks to end our day celebrating St Patty's day, wish we would have picked anywhere else...Being someone who also works in the industry as well as also working in downtown Detroit, especially with it being Saint Patty's day, you would think there would be an understanding for the customer service as well as the ambience for the day. I understand it's a long day for everybody and a day filled with people drinking, but the way that I was spoken to last night by one of their VETERAN waitresses was completely disrespectful, rude and uncalled for. She had an issue that she wanted us to pay our tab even though we were standing 10 feet away by the bar still continuing to drink, not leaving or walking out And I could tell she was upset. So I tried to be kind and respectful and walk over to her and explain that I'm in the industry and we don't mean any harm, we were just enjoying the end of our night. We will pay our tab, but we were just having some drinks. She continued to talk over me, called me a drunk bitch, and walked away. Trash customer service and extremely disrespectful/rude waitress, ask to NOT be served by the short blonde with a crap attitude. Only positive thing to say about this place is the manager and/or owner who came out and was kind to us. We explained the situation and he apologized but pretty disappointing to work downtown and for someone who works there to talk to guest like that. We won't be back and I'd advise to move this place out of your rotations.

Antonela L.

Yelp
Visited MATI for the first time this past weekend and will definitely return soon. The food, service, ambience were all top notch. We started with the saganaki, octapus and calamari for appetizers-all delicious. Then continued with the lamb shank and Bronzino for the main course -both cooked to perfection . My husband ordered the baklava for dessert and with his insistence, I tried it-OMG-best baklava I have ever eaten. We were later told by our server that the chef makes it all from scratch. Wish I had taken more pictures of the food, but pictures wouldn't do them justice anyway. Go and try it for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

Natalie M.

Yelp
Nothing special. Food and drinks are average and the prices are very high. You can get better food for less. Service is good though.

R D.

Yelp
Overall food & service was good. But the owner/manager spiro was visibly intoxicated & beligerant. As a business owner myself, I strive to uphold high standards for myself & my employees. I found it very unprofessional & disconcerting. I will not be back again

Ted S.

Yelp
The food here is the real deal. The grilled octopus is the best in town hands down. The lamb shank is also one of the best you will have. It's unbelievably tender but finished in the oven so it has a great crispness to the outside.

Yelp
If you're queer, steer clear of this restaurant. I really don't leave reviews like this often, but I have to tell any LGBTQ+ person looking for food in Greektown to avoid MATI at all costs, especially if you're with a romantic partner. I was really excited to try MATI with my partner for our 1 year wedding anniversary. We both love greek food and the location is beautifully decorated, so we decided it'd be good to make a reservation for two at 7pm on the 13th. Unfortunately, we ended up cutting our meal short and leaving after how poorly we were treated by waitstaff. We got there right around 7, and were not asked about our reservation nor given a chance to mention it before being lead to the dining area. The person seating us lead us to there and said we "Could take this table here, or one against the wall. Either is fine, It's up to you." Which was odd to me. We went to the table against the wall, and it took about 10 minutes before a server came over and asked for our drink order. The ten minutes felt like an oddly long wait because the restaurant was not busy. The server seemed displeased off the bat. There was no hello, no greeting, and just asked for our drink order. We said we would just like water, and he rolled his eyes and asked if we knew what we wanted for food. My partner said we'd love to start with the dip trio and the server walked away. We waited for about 20 minutes for our appetizer. While we waited, we watched our first server helping other tables much more enthusiastically and warmly, and went to the same tables several times in that 20 minutes span while never once checking on us and ignoring any eye contact. My partner and I were chatting and holding hands on the table while we waited, when a different server comes out with our dip trio, says "EXCUSE ME!" and shoves the plate through our connected hands, instead of just placing it behind our hands where there was more space. The server walked off without saying anything after that. I was really starting to get frustrated that we had been there for 30 minutes and our food order still hadn't been taken and the service we were getting was crap. I was also seeing everyone else in the restaurant be treated so nicely by the rest of the staff, and it was really disheartening to my partner and I! After another 15 minutes of waiting (it's 7:45 at this point), a DIFFERENT SERVER (but equally as cold as the others) comes and asks if we're ready to order. My partner told him we'd like the bill, and the server's eyes lit up and he said "Oh, okay!" and went off to go get it. A busser came and cleared our table almost immediately after that, and our bill was brought less than two minutes later. Once our card was brought back and we were leaving, we got a warm goodbye from our original server. The fastest and warmest service we got all night was when we wanted to leave, and that speaks VOLUMES. I am truly disappointed in my experience here and I can't bring myself to recommend this restaurant to anyone. I will especially be telling my queer friends to avoid it, as thats the only reason my partner and I can think as to why we were treated poorly. Decent food but not worth it.
