Gena’s Grill Serves a Meaty Latin Lunch in East Village — and Other Cheap Eats | Eater NY

"Flying the flags of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Cuba, this matriarchal café has been around since at least the late 1970s, when it was called the National Café. The space looks pretty much the same, with three tables and a row of padded stools along a lunch counter; behind the counter are steam-table tubs containing the café’s daily dishes. There’s no printed menu, so check the chalkboard outside before you walk in—the offerings have included stewed pig’s feet, paprika roast chickens, and a codfish casserole, and available every day is the roast pork leg or shoulder called pernil. I chowed down on the braised pork ribs, the meaty bones cooked with onion, green pepper, and garlic; it came with a mountain of yellow rice and black beans (you can opt for white rice and red beans). The full plate was $8.70—indeed, all the luncheon-size plates cost less than $10—and I couldn’t resist a small cup of sancocho, an oregano-laced soup here that contains both chicken and pork." - Robert Sietsema

I ordered an iced pumpkin spice latte with an extra shot and oat milk — the flavor was really good! Unfortunately, it took 30 minutes just to get my one coffee, even though there was only one person ahead of me. On top of that, about 80% of the cup was ice. I’d love to give this place another try when the wait time isn’t so long, because the drink itself was delicious.

Really nice atmosphere, great coffee, and delicious food. I ordered my go to, vanilla latte, when I’m trying a new coffee shop. It was quality coffee and perfect flavor. I also ordered avocado toast which was so good! Before I left, I did grab a strawberry matcha since it just looked beautiful and seemed to be what a lot of others were ordering. I’m not a matcha person and honestly, I’ll be back for the matcha! Im excited to go to some of their events, like Saturday morning Yoga!

I had such a wonderful experience at this café! The atmosphere is warm and inviting, perfect for both catching up with friends or spending some quiet time with a book. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive without being intrusive, which made me feel welcome right away.

The food was delicious! I ordered the Nutella toast. The ambience was welcoming and the service was fantastic. They have portable chargers and wifi making it the perfect place to study or work. Overall it was a great experience.

10/10 experience all around here! The coffee was delicious, the white chocolate, coconut matcha, made me like matcha for the first time ever, and the flakey pastry was amazing! The staff went above and beyond to make me feel welcome and provided great service!

Let me say my boyfriend and I were super excited to finally try this place! When we got there we were excited to see that it looked exactly how it was pictured on social media. Going inside, we weren’t even acknowledged or greeted. The staff was not friendly whatsoever. I understand that’s not a requirement but a simple welcome in would have been nice. The barista taking our order didn’t seem in any kind of mood to speak or anything. Even when grabbing our food item and drinks when I asked the other barista if I could please have two forks she seemed frustrated to give them to me and just handed it without even looking at me or anything. I understand when being busy or working in a busy environment things can get a little overwhelming, but no excuse to treat people rudely. In general we both felt out of place being here which sucks because I feel being at a coffee shop should be relaxing and a fun experience. I wish the drinks didn’t taste as good as they did so I wouldn’t even think of going back there. But I can’t even lie the Strawberry Matcha tasted amazing!

The café and its workers were amazing—friendly and helpful staff. The matcha and coffee were excellent. We got a matcha, bagel, cinnamon roll, and an Americano. It’s hard to get an Americano right at times, but theirs was dialed in smooth and not bitter. Overall, it was a 10/10 experience. I would definitely come back again!
