"This cozy mom and pop shop has made Canton a destination for something other than Ikea furniture. The restaurant serves traditional ramen in flavors like miso and pork as well as options like corn butter and curry. The restaurant is only accepting takeout orders for now." - Eater Staff, Dorothy Hernandez

Good, authentic ramen. Great pork soup base and perfectly cooked ramen noodles served by wonderful staff. My family has beem coming to Matsu Chan for years and though it had been about 10 years since I had last visited, I’m pleased to see it is still frequented by many. Expect a short wait as it has a smaller dining room of about 20 seats.

If only I can give more stars the food is great and fresh you leave full with a big smile on your face love it. Get the Matsu Chan Special and Teriyaki chicken bowl

Google
I brought my friend who lives on the other side of the state to try this, absolutely amazing food. Has a home cooked feel to it while serving a real dining experience. A pleasure, will be back

Google
Can't really say more about their low prices and heart-warming service. A hearty Japanese family-style restaurant as advertised. The food was a bit bland and the pork cutlets were so skinny, but quite tasty in general. Miso ramen is quite nice but wish for more meat. It's not really a restaurant that brings the "wow" but it'll still be a good dining experience nonetheless.

Google
7/5 food, best Japanese we've had in the US. Too small of a space though, often a wait. Lighting and decor could use an upgrade. Wait staff are local high schoolers, not great, not terrible. Still eat here every time we visit the area. Truly authentic Japanese food with no quality reductions is hard to come by. Owners seem nice.

Google
My family and I love this place. The ramen is exquisite just like it is in Japan. The only thing I would change is the space. Not much seating so there is a wait if you come a few minutes after they open up. Only about 8 tables available

Google
I am sorry to say that I am very disappointed with everything at this restaurant. We ordered the takoyaki, matsuchan special ramen, tonkatsu ramen and katsu don. The only one that has a flavor was the pork bone broth. The sanitary of this restaurant is barely a C (we cannot find the rating posted). The servers were not trained.

Google
WOW! The staff was so attentive, kind, and funny. We sat spontaneously with a table of 7, and were seated right away and ate within minutes. Everything tasted fresh and amazing. I HIGHLY recommend.

Yelp
Matsuchan is as authentic as you can get! It's owned by a very adorable family and the inside can only sear like 12 people. You can't miss the line of people waiting to get in either! I had corresponded with the business on their instagram and asked about vegetarian and vegan options and they sent me an entire list of things I could eat - UNREAL. I got some umeboshi onigiri which had the perfect amount of saltiness and deliciousness! I ordered their creamy vegetarian ramen and added and egg and the portion size was very generous. Be prepared to take a lot home!! 10/10 would recommend and would come back!!

Yelp
A small mom-and-pop ramen shop. We came there around just before noon and already full of customers as they have very limited seating. if there are no seats , you have to sign your name and phone number on the waiting list and they will call you when it's ready. You can't wait inside of their restaurant. Prices are super reasonable and affordable. Menu is a consist of ramen and other Japanese comfort foods including curry , onigiri and stir fries and such. I tried Tonkotsu ramen , it had a lot of noodles than I expected it made me so full. But to me the soup tasted overpowering with garlic flavor so I think I wanna try regular shoyu ramen next time. Also I ordered gyoza and it tasted fresh with lots of minced veggies which reminded me of gyoza shop at my town in Japan. It was definitely handmade and not a frozen ones that I appreciated a lot. This is a nice spot for an affordable lunch for a family.

Yelp
Super yummy ramen, but the takoyaki wasn't as crispy as it should have been. Small, cozy restaurant with authentic food--a staple of Canton, MI! Service is quick and cordial.

Yelp
This tiny little mom and pop Japanese restaurant is so good. It's a small hidden gem in a shopping center that looks really not noticeable. They have their own parking so that is easy. The tough part is getting a table. The seats are limited and there are not that many spots to choose from. It's super hot in there though, both from the hvac and sun light. So much direct sunlight comes in so it's alway like a sauna even in the winter. We selected the curry set and the udon with a side of rice ball. It was all super delicious. We ate it quickly and had to leave because it was so warm in there while eating hot food. The food is so good and quick, totally worth it.

Jenny H.

Yelp
Very cozy atmosphere. We arrived right when they opened at 5pm and the restaurant was filled in seconds. The portions are big and the prices are very reasonable. My husband and I shared the hot & spicy ramen and the eel rice. Wish this restaurant was closer to us!

Alyssa S.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've been back here because I moved out of the area but I'm glad this place is still there and the food is still great. Went there a little after they opened for lunch and they were already busy and full. Despite having to wait it was only for a short time. I tried the chicken and egg bowl this time and it was good! My mom tried the seafood udon and it was a huge portion.

Rajeev R.

Yelp
Have been a few times over the years. Small family run place with efficient no nonsense service. Just to say if you are the kind that expects being pandered to you aren't getting any. :) The ramen is good and hit the spot in Michigan winters. I usually get the Hot and Spicy but for lunch yesterday got the Champon. Very hearty the ramen was just right, big shrimp however the pork a bit overdone. But all in all very good. As you can see in the pic I added a bit of the togarashi spice.

Brian W.

Yelp
I enjoy this restaurant. It is tucked into a corner of a strip mall. The restaurant is very casual. The owner has license plates from all over the world on a wall. The restaurant itself is homey. The soup is incredible. It is a mom-and-pop shop. Give it a try. I promise you will be back.

Scott K.

Yelp
Ramen noodle lunch is spectacular! Tasty, filling and comes with 3 seafood dumplings that you must sample to believe. The fried rice easily feeds three and I always get 2 meals out of it. Did I mention it is $10.50 at lunch and is not on the website or paper menu...only on the in house white board. I pointed this out to the owner who will try to make adjustments, but now YOU know

Sean R.

Yelp
Excellent and authentic Japanese food that I think everybody should try. I had the dumplings and the curry Ramen, which was an excellent choice.

Morgan A.

Yelp
A small hidden gem that is family owned! Very limited seating and the inside has hole in the wall vibes. What it lacks in looks is made up in flavor. The service is fast and their prices are reasonable.

Adrian A.

Yelp
I throw around 5 stars a lot these days. The ramen here is excellent- in all categories, it is 10/10. Food is flavorful and excellently prepared and there is a great variety of items on the menu. The service is also notably great; quick, neat and on point, I never felt like I was waiting, even though there was a line. Super friendly staff too! It is a reason price with portion sizes more than makeup for that - I left full and happy.

Albert T.

Yelp
A small, hole in the wall ramen restaurant run by an older couple. Not the absolute best ramen I've had, but I would still recommend it to anyone in the area. It's important you get their early because there's limited seating and the restaurant fills up very quickly.

Odyssey B.

Yelp
There seafood ramen is awesome and the taxes are included in the price which is a plus

Patricia Y.

Yelp
A family business that we love! Seating is limited and the inside is not what you might expect, but it truly is a family setting and the wait staff is amazing. The ramen is fantastic- the hot and spicy is very flavorful and exciting to eat. We live only a minute away and we'll definitely be back for more!

sarah c.

Yelp
The best hidden gem for your perfect ramen experience! The quality and quantity of food you get here is unbelievable! Service is great. 100% worth it.

Jenny P.

Yelp
Got take out from here while in the area. I've been wanting to come here for a while as a recommended from my cousin but never in the area! It's a small place! They have specials and combo deals also but you might have to ask them about it over the phone. The hot and spicy ramen has a good kick but not too crazy but I'm not a huge fan of spicy ramen that is kimchi based. I really liked the miso pork ramen! The broth is beautiful. The marinated shoots is very sweet though. I don't think the miso pork ramen comes with an egg but the spicy ramen did! The meat dumplings weren't that great to me. It's cool how you can see the kitchen in the dining space, again, a small place. The beef curry rice was very good also. I would like to try more dishes from here!

Mike M.

Yelp
Still the place to go for reasonable pricing of select menu from set meal Tonkatsu, Champon, sushi and Yakisoba. The place is so cramped that they are taking names to call when seats are available.

Herve D.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem in Michigan -- authentic Japanese Ramen and we were the only Americans eating in there which was a great sign. I got the spicy ramen (it's very spicy - but has a taste like Kimchi), and my girlfriend got the Pork Tonkotsu. We also split a spicy noodles which was ok. I got to practice my Japanese a little with the staff and the customer service was stellar. As far as Ramen goes in Canton Michigan you cannot beat Matsuchan -- if you haven't been there and are craving some Ramen definitely give it a try :)

Chelsea P.

Yelp
The ramen here is fantastic! The restaurant is small and doesn't have a lot of seating, but what it lacks in looks, it makes up for with personality. The food is perfection. There's nothing better than a hot bowl of ramen or udon on a cold Michigan winter night. This is your classic "authentic hole in the wall" restaurant and it is delicious!

Mike C.

Yelp
I have been here many times. The food is amazing and the staff is very friendly. I know the owner of a local Thai restaurant who also enjoys the food here.

Zach M.

Yelp
Sometimes you go to a restaurant and when you sit down you feel like you're not a customer, but family. Eating at matsuchan feels like my friend invited me over to come eat dinner on sunday night. It's delicous, affordably priced, and comfy. I make an effort to stop there whenever i'm near.

Tommy V.

Yelp
Authentic, classic, and great. Service is fast. Small place, so there might be a wait if you go at peak times! The ramen was very authentic, and it's what I hoped it to be. Portions are a little on the smaller side, so I would get an app too! There's a ramen special where you can get a small bowl of ramen, fried rice, and shrimp dumplings or something... I definitely recommend that! I didn't do it, but I wish I had. It gives you way more food than ordering separately!

Viv P.

Yelp
Decided to give another chance... but nothing's really changed. My rating is solely on the ramen/fried rice/takoyaki. did not have anything else here. The pork soup ramen is still meh. And the fried rice is still good. it doesn't help that I have just returned from a trip to Vancouver and one of my most favorite ramen places in the world...

Yelp
If you're looking for a great Japanese noodle restaurant in western Wayne County that won't break your bank account, then Matsuchan is the place to visit. This establishment is owned by a family originally from Yamaguchi City, which is located in the Chugoku region on the western part of Honshu island. As you can imagine, the style of ramen noodles and entrées they serve at this restaurant is based on the authentic cuisine from that part of Japan. I decided to pay this place a visit, and try their "Ramen Set" that includes fried rice with shrimp dumplings, and Shoyu Ramen that was very good. I've had ramen noodles before in Toronto, but they weren't as good as the serving I had at Matsuchan. However, if you're used to the style of ramen that is served in Osaka or Tokyo, you may find the western Japan style here to be lacking in saltiness, which is more common in the aforementioned regions of Japan. Thankfully, a friend of mine who is from Kitakyushu visited this place and told me the style ramen they serve is from Yamaguchi, which doesn't overdo the cooking style with a lot of seasoning unless you ask for it. Usually, Shoyu Ramen is a soup that is tangy, salty, and savory yet still fairly light on the palate. While I found that to be the case, I wish I could have located a salt shaker to spice it up just a little. That being said, The dinner portions are huge. I really liked the servings and the overall atmosphere of the restaurant as it gave me a good vibe.

Jenny K.

Yelp
Picked up two ramen sets to go! Curry and tonkotsu! LOVED the curry as it was a type of ramen I'd never eaten before. Noodles were very firm! Added a ton of chili paste for some added Kick. Was really hoping for potsticker dumplings but they were more of a shumai. And the amount of fried rice is crazy. It fed me for a week :)

Cory C.

Yelp
I came here for dinner with my family on a Saturday night around 8 pm and it was still really crowded! It is a pretty small restaurant. We all ordered the ramen combo, which comes with a (smaller) bowl of pork soup ramen, a generous scoop of fried rice, and 3 shrimp shumai dumplings. I have to say, I wasn't super impressed with the ramen - it was just okay. The portion was kind of small (which I figured was because it was part of the combo, so that's fine), the soup was overly garlicky (I felt they added a lot of garlic to compensate for the lack of rich pork flavor), and there was only 1 piece of pork in the dish. The texture of the noodles was pretty good, and I liked the fish cake that came with it. The shumai tasted like frozen stuff you'd get at an Asian grocery store. It was msg laden shrimp paste. Didn't taste bad, but nothing special. The fried rice was the best part of the meal. There was egg, carrot, green onions, and fish cake in it. It was flavorful and fragrant (it had a nice wok-seared flavor). The texture was a little mushier than I would like, but it wasn't a huge deal. We got our food pretty promptly. Service was okay. The waitress was nice and friendly, but she was the only one serving the whole restaurant, so we never got asked if we wanted tea refills or anything. We actually had to flag her down for our bill, she was so busy. I'd probably eat here again, but wouldn't go out of my way.

Rodrigo T.

Yelp
Way way way back before Detroit had proper ramen joints. This was here quietly serving up proper noodle dish concoctions that warms the soul. I always lean to the Hot and Spicy or the Curry ramen. Maybe an order of gyoza or two and were good to go. Not your glitzy ramen joints of Detroit, but it does have the homey, mom and pop shop feel. Make sure you come early or be prepared to wait for a table because it does get packed and the place is extremely intimate. Check on their operating hours as well. Just so you dont show up and find out they're closed. Thank you so much for reading my review. I hope this helps with your decision making experience. Enjoy your awesome yelptastic day!!

Robert T.

Yelp
Excellent ramen, seating is limited but the food is fantastic. Hot and spicy ramen and the soy sauce flavored are my favorite.

bo c.

Yelp
We love ordering carry out from here. Our favorite are the rice balls, with salmon. It's great if you just want a small rice and fish meal. The kimchi beef dish is very yummy. The quality of their ramens are so good, and very well priced.

Claudia E.

Yelp
I'm a big ramen fan, and I've been looking for a good place in the Canton area. We stopped by here and we were hoping for it to be dine-in, but they're not supporting it right now which is understandable and responsible. The locale is a tiny little spot in a strip mall, with a wall full of old states' license plates and other cute decor. I ordered the the miso pork ramen and my boyfriend got the seafood ramen. I really think if it was dine-in, we would've liked it better, with the ramen in the bowl and us being able to dip as needed and mix around. My boyfriend loved the fish cakes (he stole mine, so I take it that they're great!). I'm excited to come back and try more of their dishes, as well as their specials. It was a really good value for the amount of food that we got, and it was really tasty too! Looking forward to the sit-down reopening, but until then I'll keep getting my takeout. Would definitely recommend!

Ming Z.

Yelp
A very homey small Japanese noodle place. We ordered Cold Noodles with rice ball and Japanese Ramen in miso soup, salad and Takoyaki and the price is so affordable considering how big the portions are. With the high inflation, the stores that can keep the prices and portion unchanged is very few and this is one of them. This is the first time I have cold noodle in a Japanese restaurant. They only offer it in summer. soba is chewy, with shredded egg, toufu and seaweed, the sweetness and saltiness is balanced. Salad is very fresh, but I don't like the salad dressing. It is too sweet. Takoyaki has a lot of dry fish flake on, but it is too soft. If I am in the area, I will definitely try other dishes. The store is small, so needs to be there early to avoid long line.

Eve D.

Yelp
I loveeeeee this place! It's a mom and pop store in a little strip mall area. The seating area is quite limited so it's safe to plan accordingly or come early. We were lucky to have the seats at 11am and two mins after we got in, it was a lunch rush. My husband got hit and spicy and I got pork miso soup. Both of them taste very delicious! Last time, I had a tasty ramen bowl like this was in Japan and my husband got jelly for that. LOL Hot and spicy bowl favors more Korean flavor and Japanese to me but I am glad that we gave it a try. It turned out that we both enjoyed pork miso soup more than the hot and spicy. The service was fast as well. One nice thing is that all the meals are tax included. The only thing I wish is, they serve more Japanese food and have more seatings.

joe d.

Yelp
The best ramen in Canton I can't recommend highly enough! Big portions and bigger flavor!

Yang L.

Yelp
It's been a long time that I've found a ramen place where I was able to finish the broth along with the noodles. Matsuchan really hit the spot - compared to many other ramen places around town, their broths are far less seasoned and have a more mild flavor. I came on a day off and tried their Ramen set which comes with ramen, a sizable portion of fried rice and three small shiumai dumplings. The ramen noodles were on point - fresh and chewy, they held up very well to the broth. Toppings were standard sprouts, ginger, meat (standard is pork), green onions, etc. As mentioned earlier, the broth is mild and for my tastes, more palatable as I don't like feeling like a walking salt bomb after a meal. This time, I had the tonkotsu/pork broth. The fried rice was fluffy, flavorful with bits of shrimp and egg dispersed among the grains. It was surprisingly good being a side dish to the ramen, and even though I had just eaten the bowl of ramen AND broth, I polished off the rice too. The shiumai were nothing to write home about - fairly standard. For some logistics, cost is a huge appeal here. Their ramen set will satisfy probably all but the biggest eaters and sets you back $10 before tip. There's a reason why I saw so many people coming in during their lunch break for sure! Great food at a great value. The location is also tiny. I counted around maybe 18 seats so there is a possibility of a considerable wait. But I can say it won't be because of the service - it was prompt and efficient. It's cozy in the right light, stressful if the line holds you back. Location. It's in Canton so its very much out of the way for many metro Detroiters. This is rather unfortunate, and maybe some day they can expand? Time will tell. As you can see in the other reviews and photos, they also have a varied menu with some sushi, Dinner main courses and several other varieties of broth. I'm looking forward to visiting and trying them all over time!

Dorothy W.

Yelp
If you want super large bowls of Raman for ~$10, you'll wanna come to Matsuchan! It's a hole in a wall restaurant, but the food is tasty and affordable! A few of my favorites are the curry ramen, hot and spicy, and Champon! Keep in mind that the restaurant is only opened for a few hours for lunch, it closes, and then opens again for a few hours for dinner.

Virginia L.

Yelp
Was craving some authentic ramen bowls so we decided to check this place out. I could tell the food was going to be good Bc it had the mom/pop vibes going. The shop is quite small/cozy and luckily we made it past the dinner rush so there was no wait for a table. Their menu was quite extensive, as you could order ramen, fried rice, gyoza, Takoyaki, and sushi. So we decided to get a little bit of each! I really enjoyed how they serve you a hot cup of tea as you contemplate what to order. The ramen set is perfect for those that want a half order of ramen, half order of fried rice, and some shrimp shumai. That was plenty of food for us to share! We also tried the Regular Shoyu Ramen and that was enough to share as well. All the flavors were satisfying- not too salty and noodles were chewy and pleasant. I just wished the Pork broth was more flavorful and hearty but it still hit the spot. The fried rice was a great addition. Carbs is life, let's be honest. I'm glad we checked this place out. Prices were very reasonable and the portions are quite generous. Will def be back for more!

Shu L.

Yelp
Love the ramen combo!!! It is exactly what I would expect from a local Japanese family restaurant. Was a little bit disappointed with the fried dumplings but everything else worths the drive

Hasan I.

Yelp
Fantastic local ramen place located in the heart of Canton, MI with authentic taste and design. With every bowl of ramen that is served out of the kitchen you are getting a taste of real Japanese cuisine. To be honest, I ordered the vegetable ramen made with vegetable broth to obtain a vegan option here. While I did this, I am not sure I received what I was looking for. After a couple bites something did not taste right and after asking the server why that was it was because the only broth that was used there was Pork Broth. The only vegan options here are is the avocado roll and the cucumber roll. For all NON-vegan people here, you will love love it.

Sifah M.

Yelp
Time for an update on this place. I've had just about every bowl of ramen they make, I'm gonna say the misopork ramen is the best. Perfect blend of sweetness from the pork fat, and saltiness and umami from the miso paste. The hot and spicy is a close second, but depending on the day it can be amazing or it can be just ok. Also love the cornbutter ramen, probably have to say it's a tie with the spicy ramen for 2nd. Also, the regular sized ramen bowl is huge. A hearty bowl like the tonkotsu or curry will take care of you for the rest of the day, especially if you ask for extra noodles. Takoyakis pretty good, onigiri with fish is a good side dish with the ramen. Waitstaff is always nice and the ramen is always piping hot when it hits the table. Prices went up a little bit since my last review, but not much, still between 8 and 12 dollars for any bowl, and you get more than your money's worth. Only complaint I have is that the noodles aren't made fresh, they're pre-prepared, but it's not a huge deal. Almost makes me glad the weathers changing. Still the perfect thing for a cold winter day.

Jennifer L.

Yelp
"This is one of the best hole-in-the-wall places in town," my brother said when we came here to pick up our order. He got the hot & spicy ramen, my sister-in-law got a half and half order of fried rice and miso ramen, and I got ginger garlic beef that comes with a salad and rice. Ginger garlic beef was a blend of sweet, salty, and garlicky deliciousness. My brother and sister-in-law enjoyed their dishes. I would've given this place a solid four stars, but they were extra generous with the portions because we were there 15 minutes before closing: my brother had a whole egg in his soup as opposed to half an egg, my sister-in-law got nearly a full order of both fried rice and soup instead of half (her soup was about 85% of my brother's full soup), and I received two orders of rice instead of one. Thanks!

Cyndi S.

Yelp
The food was unique and delicious. To avoid the crowd, we ordered take out. However, it was a long wait for our order to be completed.

Vikash K.

Yelp
Great place. It was small, and def mom and pop restaurant. But the staff was nice and the food came out quickly. Loved the Spicy curry noodles. They def had a kick to it. Good chunks of crab, beef and a lot of noddles. Definitely filled you up. Got rice on the side as well. Also had the shrimp dumplings- with the hot oil and soy sauce they were great. Recommend this place!

Jessica Y.

Yelp
Easter Sunday ramen!!! Cozy little shop with maybe 6 tables. Food was OK, not stellar, but the SERVICE was OUTSTANDING!! Our friendly and attentive server elevated this from a 3star to 4star review. We ordered CONCH SALAD: would probably not re-order...too many raw white onions, unexpected mayo-based? dressing, and the conch unfortunately had a weird aftertaste. TAKOYAKI: also would not reorder :-( the tako a bit small and the potato paste ball was mushy without any crisp... CURRY RAMEN: was OK, flavor was kinda watered down. Would maybe reorder but likely would try the traditional pork bone broth ramen next time. KATSU CURRY RICE: this was not on the menu but the server kindly asked the kitchen to make it for us, and had the curry served on the side!! That's 5star service right There! Our only wish for this dish was to have some side pickled radishes. Was a tad let down by all the rave reviews (perhaps we didn't order the right dishes), but bc of reasonable prices and EXCELLENT service will be back to try some of the other ramen dishes :-)

Yelp
I love Matsuchan! I've probably been here 3 times and every trip from Ann Arbor is worth it! Matsuchan is a small mom and pop restaurant in a tucked away in small strip mall. There is nothing fancy or extravagant about this place, but you get a lot of bang for your buck. For only $8, you can get yourself a delicious bowl of ramen. My favorite is the shoyu (soy sauce flavor) ramen. The noodles are perfectly cooked and the broth is flavorful. For an extra $1, you can get the ramen set that comes with a bowl of ramen, fried rice, and 3 piece of shrimp dumplings. Their meat dumplings are amazing too! If you are in the area, definitely stop by Matsuchan!

Ronda N.

Yelp
Dive restaurants serve the best food and this place is no exception. I can't wait to enjoy again the ramen noodle soup based on soy sauce broth. The soup had seaweed, thin sliced beef and ramen noodles. This dish came with a side of fried rice and three homemade dumplings. The restaurant is itty bitty. It seats approximately 25 people at a time. Despite limited seating Matsuchan's food is absolutely delicious and worth the wait.

Tania L.

Yelp
Service was great and the food was amazing! Their broth is tasty and very delicate. The ramen noodles are always cooked perfectly.

Marquis C.

Yelp
I've been going here for a few months and I generally get some type of ramen which is all very good but today I tried the beef curry rice bowl and it is one of the best things I've had to eat in a long time. The rice is cooked perfectly and the flavor of the curry is amazing and the beef is cooked just right. Always recommended the place for the noodles but I can now say for sure I have full trust to eat anything on the menu. Absolutely amazing.

Ben C.

Yelp
Lovely little restaurant. Great ramen had the misopork. Bit heavy on the bean sprouts but tasty broth.

Cecily W.

Yelp
Many people told me it's the best ramen place in Michigan, and I wanted to come here for a while. I was excited to try this place, but the overall experience is just a OK. It's a small place, by the end of my visit, there are people waiting in line for a table. I ordered the vegetable ramen. The broth is OK, lots of vegetables. Noddle has egg in it. It taste like something you can make at home, and I expect something better since it's a restaurant. My friend ordered the seafood one and likes that. I wish there are more ramen restaurant in Michigan area. Hope to see something better.
