It's been a long time that I've found a ramen place where I was able to finish the broth along with the noodles. Matsuchan really hit the spot - compared to many other ramen places around town, their broths are far less seasoned and have a more mild flavor. I came on a day off and tried their Ramen set which comes with ramen, a sizable portion of fried rice and three small shiumai dumplings.
The ramen noodles were on point - fresh and chewy, they held up very well to the broth. Toppings were standard sprouts, ginger, meat (standard is pork), green onions, etc. As mentioned earlier, the broth is mild and for my tastes, more palatable as I don't like feeling like a walking salt bomb after a meal. This time, I had the tonkotsu/pork broth.
The fried rice was fluffy, flavorful with bits of shrimp and egg dispersed among the grains. It was surprisingly good being a side dish to the ramen, and even though I had just eaten the bowl of ramen AND broth, I polished off the rice too. The shiumai were nothing to write home about - fairly standard.
For some logistics, cost is a huge appeal here. Their ramen set will satisfy probably all but the biggest eaters and sets you back $10 before tip. There's a reason why I saw so many people coming in during their lunch break for sure! Great food at a great value.
The location is also tiny. I counted around maybe 18 seats so there is a possibility of a considerable wait. But I can say it won't be because of the service - it was prompt and efficient. It's cozy in the right light, stressful if the line holds you back.
Location. It's in Canton so its very much out of the way for many metro Detroiters. This is rather unfortunate, and maybe some day they can expand? Time will tell.
As you can see in the other reviews and photos, they also have a varied menu with some sushi, Dinner main courses and several other varieties of broth. I'm looking forward to visiting and trying them all over time!
