On the Grid : Matsubara-an

"Matsubara-an Keyaki Soba in Omotesando is the sister restaurant of the upscale soba noodle restaurant in Kamakura. You can watch them knead their quality soba noodles which they later boil and serve in rich soup. The simple interior and Japanese decor offers a calming and relaxing atmosphere." - Misa Matsuda Maraun

We were here for lunch after walking around Takeshita St and the surrounding areas. Our personal tour guide recommended this place and had pre-booked us in for lunch so we did not have to wait. While located in a modern office building, the interior decor was pleasantly Japanese. The hostess were super friendly and the food was super yummy. Lovely place and highly recommended if you are around Harajuku or the Meiji Shrine area.

Superb find. Extremely tasty Soba in an exquisite space that is traditionally and tastefully done. One of the best restaurants we discovered in Tokyo. Price is also very reasonable for the quality of the restaurant.

Amazing sobs and appetizers! Definitely must try the tofu from nagano. Great atmosphere and the staff are very friendly. The restaurant is located on the 4th floor of harajuku quest mall, take the elevator up.

They make their soba onsite and seem to specialize in combinations with tempura, which is so light and crisp. We had a lunch combo with appetizers which was delicious and ideally portioned; the duck combo also looked wonderful.

Quite reasonable traditional soba restaurant just near Harajuku station. Good for snacking small dishes with sake followed with cold soba at the end.

Traditional home made soba place sets for lunches and dinners and separate offers. Very tasty. 4th floor.

Fantastic soba in a relaxing sanctuary that takes you away from the hustle and bustle of Harajuku. We chose the cold 2200 yen soba lunch set with tempura. The appetisers were brilliant, and the tempura was light and well-fried. The soba noodles themselves were fragrant and delicious. The service is excellent and very attentive. Their is an English menu, and the staff speak English. For a high-class soba experience at mid-range prices, I definitely recommend coming here.

Google
One of the best soba restaurants in Tokyo. There is about a 20-30 minute wait, depending on what time you arrive. Cold and hot sobas available, also has set meals. The waitresses are helpful and can give you meal recommendations if you have a hard time deciding. English menus are available

Yelp
Love the soba here and the ambiance in general. Located on the fourth floor of a small building, you remove your shoes when you enter. There's a nice seating area that overlooks the omotesando and it just feels so peaceful and quiet. The waiters and waitresses are not fluent in English but it's still very easy to order. They keep refilling your buckwheat tea and the soba is delicious. We went for lunch so we ordered two lunch sets which comes with a plate of small bites, presented beautifully, and soba noodles. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who loves soba and wants a peaceful dining experience amidst the hustle & bustle of Harajuku.

Yelp
Just a cute little izakaya place where I dove in for dinner. Totally lovely and chill inside you'd forget the buzz on the streets of Harajuku. I can't say it's spectacular but it's good for the area...ask to sit at the bar so you can get a view of the chefs cooking various yummies.

Yelp
We came here for lunch on a Sunday and arrived to a line of about 20 people. We waited 15 minutes before being ushered to a back room after removing our shoes. Loved that we took our shoes off, as this was a first for us! The ceilings are low... Or at least they were for my husband and I who are 6'3" and 5'9"! We were seated in a back room with one other family and left with a buzzer for which to ring the waitress. They have English menus and a wide selection of hot and cold soba. We ordered the set lunch but, I recommend skipping the set and just going for the soba, as that was the highlight. It was 7 mini bites to start, which is a common thing in Japan. There was duck, tofu, a salad with mackerel, a rice ball, fried potatoes, a chestnut etc. a couple of the items were good but I didn't eat most of them. I ordered the citrus soba and my husband ordered the duck soba. Both were served hot and the broths were so unique and rich. We also ordered the tempura, but it was not anything special. Service was very, very slow and we were forced to use the buzzer several times. Not sure if this was the intent of the buzzer but we felt rude using it. Lunch was around $70. It's one of the more formal lunch places in Shibuya. Most cafes in Shibuya are very casual so it was nice to have a sit down meal in between shopping.

Yelp
Upon arriving in Tokyo, I had a list of restaurants and places that were recommended to me or highly rated on Yelp. After having quite a disappointing lunch at Sushi Katsu Midori, my bf and I stumbled upon this little gem for dinner and I could not have been happier. Everything about this place was perfect: from the moment we took off our shoes as we entered, to the buckwheat tea that they refilled endless amount of times, to the beef tendon and radish appetizer, cold soba noodles dipped in hot duck soup... so perfect. Oh and there is an option to do half size of all soba noodles for 300 yen off, not half the price.

Yelp
It's easy to appreciate the ability of Japanese restauranteurs to create a superb atmosphere in the face of myriad obstacles. The owner of Matsubara-an has created an oasis of Japanese charm in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Harajuku. Just minutes from the frenetic pace of the Harajuku street scene on the fourth floor of a nondescript building, you'll find what could easily be a mistaken for a quaint soba shop. Let your eyes adjust to the scene. Have a seat at one of the tables, on the tatami floor or at the counter. Your tastebuds are about to be "wowed". Indulge yourself with one of the set menus. Perhaps you'll get the hors d'oeuvres to begin your meal? The soba -- made on premises-- and tempura here will complete your meal. Many of the fixed price meals come with a glass of wine. Why not give yourself a moment to relax? You'll need to gather your strength before heading back out to see what's what on Omote-Sando.
