Philly’s Best Roast Pork Sandwiches | Eater Philly

"Inspiration manifests in many ways in the City of Brotherly Love, and at Matt and Marie’s, it comes in the form of a roast pork sandwich. Its Tripodi roast pork sandwich was created to honor the memory of one of its most devoted customers. The sandwich (made “Frank’s way”) features hot roast pork, spicy pepperoncini aioli, cherry peppers, and melted mild provolone cheese." - George Banks-Weston

Was just passing by and decided to grab a sandwich for later. Nice cozy place. Plenty of seating as well as seating by the window. Variety of sandwiches. I tried the Classic Philly Italian. Seeded roll. Flavorful sandwich. I would’ve liked just a bit more meat on mine. They use Arugala on theirs. Used to regular Iceberg but it was fine. Friendly and engaging staff. Very sandwich knowledgeable.

Google
Even when I bring lunch, I'm tempted to grab something from Matt and Marie’s. You get what you pay for, and in this case, it's fresh and flavorful ingredients packed into a quality sandwich from end to end. The toasted roast beef is one of my favorites - rare, flavorful beef on a great roll with perfectly thin sliced red onion. I tried the meatball sandwich for the first time today and loved it. They're usually pretty fast. Cold sandwiches are out almost right away; if it's toasted you wait 5-10 minutes. They have tables, but most people grab and go. If I had one recommendation, it would be to offer a lunch combo that includes a drink and chips for a set price. I think it would make customers happy and might even boost sales on chips and soda.

Google
Just popped in to grab a sandwich had never been here before . I got the meatball Parm, which was really really good and the manager Nelke was awesome and super friendly. It was just such a good vibe. I would definitely go back.

Google
The food was unfortunately quite underwhelming. The sandwich lacked flavor as the turkey was unseasoned and a bit dry. However, I will say the rolls were excellent and definitely the highlight.

Google
Ordered catering from Matt and Maries for a lunch event. The delivery was on time, ordering was easy and straightforward, and the food was great! We got the sandwiches platters with chips and a side salad bowl, and also were able to get vegetarian wraps and separate boxed vegan lunches to accommodate dietary restrictions.

Google
Staff was friendly, food came out promptly and was made fresh, and came out delicious. I had the Italian Stallion.

Yelp
Been working this area for a while and finally had an opportunity to try out City Tap House. It's a popular spot for lunch and has a variety of seating areas. We sat at a high top which didn't have the most comfortable seats. The servers were very friendly and attentive throughout the experience providing water refills and making sure we had what we needed. We both ordered the tuna poke bowl and fries. I chose the garlic Parmesan fries which were fantastic. The poke bowl was tasty but could have had more faro. The seasoning was good and the amount was solid. The fries were just the most memorable part of the meal. They have an extensive beer list as well. I just didn't review it closely as it was a work lunch.

Yelp
Used to come here more often when I worked in Center City years ago. Now started to put this back in the rotation of go-to places when looking for good drinks and bar eats. Came here the other weekend on a Friday night and luckily we found seats at the bar. The place wasn't too crowded but definitely had a good number of people in there, with chatter of different convos going on. Place looks the same to me with a modern rustic and clean look throughout. Bartenders and staff are always great - friendly, filled with personality and good at making drinks. Eventually they had a DJ playing, which made for a good vibe as the night went on. Food and drinks are always good. The Ten Spice Wings are a go-to for me since they are always cooked perfectly with the right amount for crisp, served hot and the dry rub is delicious! We also got the Fish and Chips to share, but I've had other items here (Margherita Pizza, Nashville Hot Cauliflower, etc.) that are also really good. Recommend checking them out and will be back again soon.

Yelp
Had a chance to stop by today to attend a corporate event. We enjoyed the wings, which are amazing, the poke nachos, yum yum yum and the hummus platter, yummy. The staff were nice, but really busy with another large group and a handful of tables. They were checking in or easy to catch when walking by. The restaurant is nicely decorated with several monitors that play sports, movies or shows. Great location. Would recommend!

Yelp
I've been here before for business functions but never to sit and eat. Luckily it was not packed so I could get in and sit quickly. My server was great. Very friendly and helpful. I had the sliced steak for about $35 and a water. Not bad but light on the size for the price. The flavor was good. I really came in for wings but the ones they had were not traditional and an only a dry rub. Bummer. The inside is nice and open with plenty of seating. I did find the menu very limited and honestly wasn't in love with anything so I chose the steak. I hope the next time if I come back they have normal wings or at least better menu selections. Unfortunately I forgot to grab a picture of the menu.

Yelp
Great place to catch local games. I got the lavender haze since I'm not a beer drinker and it was sooooo good. I got the redemption on broad and it was just not my drink even though I love old fashioneds. The pretzel with pimento cheese was also good. The music before the DJ came was not the vibe but the DJ was wonderful. Bartenders were also wonderful. This may become my regular spot b

Yelp
Special menu for Eagles Game Days! Fun atmosphere with 4 TVs and 1 projector. I arrived about 30 minutes before the start of the game and was barely able to get a spot by the bar. DJ plays during the commercial breaks.
google avatar

Becci S.

Yelp
Had an hour to kill and stopped for drink and quick appetizer. Atmosphere was great! Music is great! Vibe is pretty cool even on a Thursday afternoon. The spinach artichoke dip is actually probably the best I have had in a long time. Would come back just for that! Might come again to try dinner items! Two bars which is sort of neat as well. The bartender was super nice too! Lots of beer on tap!

Yelp
Really love City Tap House. Awesome selection of food and drinks, great space inside, helpful and friendly service. Would recommend coming here for a late night drink, early happy hour, dinner, team event, sporting event, anything. Love it here!

Linette S.

Yelp
The place was semi empty for a Saturday night. There was a live DJ with a good selection of music. The service was okay. Checked in on us a few times & who I'm assuming is the manager also checked in (they didn't introduced themselves, just asked if we were doing alright.) The beer was good and reasonably priced. The Mac and cheese was disappointing. Very dry and some noodles didn't even have cheese on it. The Brussels were good, had a nice flavor to them.

Terrence M.

Yelp
No real positives here. The wing spice was weak. Wedding soup was salty and chunky (come on). The beer menu was decent, but the environment for drinking such beer was lacking -- cold, cavernous, and not conducive to watching sports despite the appearance of being a sports bar. Service was indifferent, but the layout didn't help the one person assigned to running the bar.
google avatar

Desiree J.

Yelp
Great service, cool atmosphere. Really big tv for sports + other TVs for more sports. Large bar with lots of seating and overall a really large location. Huge beer selection, although there's also a full bar for those who aren't beer ppl. Food was just okay. Tried the Brussel sprouts and the pretzels with pimento cheese and didn't finish either. This is somewhere you come for the drinks and atmosphere and probably less for the food.

Yelp
Deliciou, fresh beet and goat cheese salad with candied pecans, clementines, and red onions. Don't even bother adding grilled protein. Honestly, not needed. My Dad loved his ciabatta goat cheese and fig chicken sandwich.

Yelp
Ordered take out the NY steak and frites and it was delicious! Well cooked and good even though takeout still fresh tasting

Yelp
Happy Football season, Philly! My fellow transplants might know the pain of desperately hoping their team is showing locally so they can watch at home via their antenna...only to find out they are out of luck. This has been me the past two Sundays! Enter: City Tap House, the perfect place to watch literally ANY game you're looking for...anytime. As a caveat, I have yet to eat here. I've bellied up to the same place at the bar and been taken care of by their incredible Sunday bar staff. Another thing worth noting is that the Eagles have been on prime time the past two weeks, so things have been relatively chill - I wore my Bills gear both times and was not at all bullied. It is a beautiful melting pot of different non-Eagles football fans trying to peacefully watch their team. I have heard they bring in a DJ and make it an all-out party for Eagles games, which I would also love to experience! The prices here are really reasonable, they pull a mean green tea shot, and the entire staff here is so accommodating. Looking for your game on a specific TV? Ask! Hoping to sit somewhere specific? The FOH staff here has you covered. It is nice to know I have a place I can always go to watch my team play this season, and this is also an excellent spot if you have a group in town and are looking for a solid place to enjoy a drink, brunch, or dinner. I will be back many times this season!

Yelp
Good pub/bar food. Service can be a little lacking. It can get loud at night and during games, but to be expected.

Yelp
So my "normal" place to come with friends before rehearsal is Victory Brew Pub (see my review!) but one of my friends recommended City Tap House as he says they carry his "top 5" beers. We decided to make the hop, skip, and jump over to City Tap House. I'm glad we did. The large space restaurant has all wood trim but not in an Irish Pub style. It's more modern. The bar is large and lots of tables, although the hostess told me only one high top next to the bar was available in a rather empty place (which filled up quickly). The meeting time was 6pm and I got there with seven minutes to spare. You know what that means...Happy Hour prices for a hot second. I picked one of the beers marked local for a little HH discount. My friends got there also with seconds to spare so they could get the deal. For food, I went with the tomato soup and a beet and goat cheese salad. Both were excellent and filling. The dressing on the salad was nice and light. The mandarin orange pieces were a nice touch. My friends had the hummus which was too much for just one person, and a chicken Caesar salad which also looked just as appetizing as mine. We had some great conversation and got out in time for rehearsal. Service was a little overwhelmed due to a party coming in for 75 when they said it was only for 50. So it was a bit slow but very friendly. $29 including tip for a Happy Hour beer, soup and salad. I'm choosing City Tap House over Victory from now on!

Yelp
Their spice wings never disappoint. Probably best wings I've had in the city! Now, I want to rave about The G.O.A.T pizza. What made it taste unique was the pistachio pesto drizzled on the pizza. And there were pieces of pistachio. The flavor mixed with truffle honey was delicious!

Yelp
For our appetizer, we started with an order of the Nashville hot cauliflower and pretzel sticks. I think I could have eaten an entire platter of the cauliflower -- they were lightly fried and coated in a spicy (with a hint of sweet) Buffalo sauce. The side of ranch was the perfect cooling accompaniment. The pretzel sticks were great as well. The pretzels were served warm and lightly salted. They were soft and fluffy. The spicy mustard and creamy pimento cheese dip were both tasty -- I'm not sure which I liked more. The burger unfortunately left much to be desired. The two beef patties were dry and tasted eerily similar to what you might find at a fast food burger joint. The fluffy bun and burger sauce did much of the heavy lifting. I normally have no issues finishing a burger, but this was a struggle. I definitely would not order it again. The service was decent, and the drink selection was impressive. But I'm not sure if I would go rushing back here. I was, however, thankful we were able to walk in and be seated without a reservation.

Yelp
Stopped by here because we were passing by and it was open and we were starving. Ordered the huevos rancheros & a burger. The food was pretty good! Good taste and good quality ingredients. The drink (brotherly buzz) was fine, nothing crazy. Service was also fine, nothing to write home about. The place itself is big with a nice ambiance. Easy place to stop for a beer and a bite to eat!
google avatar

Keemy U.

Yelp
This is a nice hang out spot for post work. The corn and crab hush puppies tasted burnt but the beermosa was good. It had the taste of a beer and mimosa and it did its job. The service was decent enough. I sat outside and the tables were wobbly. This is a good place for groups and maybe if you're alone.
google avatar

Summer B.

Yelp
I went here for a business happy hour. Great hang out for connecting with friends and meeting new ones over a quick bite to eat. It can get pretty loud in here so just note you'll have to turn your volume up if your trying to have a conversation. I was surprised by how good the service and turn around time for food is here. Did not have to wait long at all even though it was a full house. I enjoyed the Korean Short Ribs. Freshly garnished with Asian slaw and cilantro. The chili sauce was a tad too spicey for me but I'm a baby when it comes to anything with a strong kick to it. Solid experience.

Yelp
It was ok, we were at the Franklin Institute and popped over here for lunch. The food was good, nothing amazing, but good. They have a solid beer list and draft list, I ordered a stout and they had to change the keg, no big deal. When he brought it back it was 3/4 full glass and 50% head and he said "honestly man I'd order something different next time". I was kinda shocked, I should've said, well why bring me this half a beer? I kind of expected for him to be like, this one is on us, or if you wanna order something else. Nope, I had to pay for it. I should've complained. That kinda sucked. My daughter (4) ordered the kids pretzel sticks, and it comes with a spicey cheese, and I mean it was spicy, I love spicy but this was really really a bad choice for any kids meal. Whoever thought that was a good idea doesn't have kids or know kids. My kid screamed and when I tried it I was shocked. I probably won't come back when we're in the hood honestly. But it was good, not the best so I may if the mood strikes me.
google avatar

Kelsey M.

Yelp
Went here for dinner as we were looking for a restaurant close to the Franklin Institute. The food was subpar. Pretzels were a 10/10 and the nachos were good but eventually got over the flavor. The wings had a nice crunch but didn't have much flavor and neither did the sandwich. The drinks were great and the service was phenomenal! The inside was super vibey and perfect for an after work happy hour. I would probably go back for drinks after work!
google avatar

Jordan B.

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch while in Philly for the weekend. Glad we made this choice ! I was having a weird stomach day so I took it easy and has the chicken tortilla soup, which was absolutely yummy and comforting. I also ordered the crab and corn hush puppies which were equally delicious. My husband ordered the shrimp and grits. He loved it and kept saying how good the collard greens were.
google avatar

Debbie L.

Yelp
The food was delicious and my server/bartender was amazing and attentive. The ambiance definitely gave bar with a restaurant vibe in the back
google avatar

Sara M.

Yelp
Food was great! Pepperoni pizza you can't go wrong. The beer list is amazing. Service was very slow but that's so common nowadays, we were enjoying our time out and not in a rush so it didn't bother us. She kept apologizing. Great spot to watch a game! No pix. Just yummy drinks and food
google avatar

Alpa B.

Yelp
I ordered Shrimp and Grits (customized) and it was outstanding. The place is nice, ambience is perfect and 100% worth a visit. The manager Jasmine , is outstanding, very courteous and welcoming . She addressed an issue so professionally, I would give her 11 out of 10 for handling it. Thank you for your hospitality! I'll be back for sure !
google avatar

Rebecca C.

Yelp
Very dark atmosphere. Weird smell sitting at the bar. The bartender was attentive and crafted his margarita very well! The wings however were not the best I've had. First order were dry and burnt overwhelming taste of burnt sugar. The bartender graciously took them back and placed a new order. The second batch came out with the running who offered "I hope these are better for you" wishes and with less "10 spice".
google avatar

Christopher C.

Yelp
Didn't even try the food. I was run off by the music. Why on earth would you have a DJ at 8 pm on a Wednesday night - that makes the place sound like a Scandinavian rave?? You're a sports pub. Relax. All that said - I do hear the food here is pretty good. Just wish I'd Uber Eats it instead of heading my old ass live to Club Flockenrock.

Yelp
The drinks, food, and service were great! It was the only place near the hotel open at 11 pm but it turned out being a great bar with a th cool crowd and great ambiance. Highly recommend!

Aust S.

Yelp
What an amazing lunch. Short rib tacos were outstanding and the Kenwood Original that I drank with it? Somehow even better. Man what a great beer. Great bar with tons of TVs, great food, great beer. Highly recommended!

Susan L.

Yelp
Two of us ate dinner on the early side on a Sunday evening, so the place was not crowded and the decibel level was bearable. The service was attentive and pleasant. We both decided we wanted the New York Strip and fries. Mine was ordered medium rare, and it was, however, several slices were impossible to cut and eat because of the gristle. The fries were very tasty and not soggy. I would return, but I would order something else.

Haley P.

Yelp
Very very busy on a Saturday afternoon, as to be expected. They are listed as a Penn State watch party location, so we went for the game. However they had an "old people private party" - the managers exact words, so they would not turn on the sound for the game. If your private bookings take precedent of the game, then don't advertise as a watch party location. I would try again, but what if there is another private event?? Tuna nachos were decent, and the drink list was impressive.

Blevins H.

Yelp
The food was really good and reasonably priced. A truly wonderful on tap selection from wide variety of locales. Todd was a great server! Paid special attention to us and went beyond the call for my wife's special requests. Ask for Todd!
google avatar

Patrick H.

Yelp
Great place for a casual dinner with friends. Huge bar/beer selection. You can reserve a table via Resy. Their wings are pretty good as well as their mac & cheese, for which you can add meat! They were closed for a while during COVID, so thankfully they are reopened. Rating: 6/10

Yelp
Honestly a great place to watch a football game, but definitely get here early. Came here during an Eagles game, (about half-way through so that was our bad), but still sat at the side bar and still given great service. If you want a truly unique list of local beers and a large list of delicious food, you gotta come to City Tap House. Beautiful location with lots of TVs as well! The street corn dip was a stupendous starter and had a bit of a zip and a touch of lime. Came out piping hot to boot! The dry rub sweet heat wings were DELICIOUS. Complex flavor, very juicy and perfectly fried. The side of blue cheese ranch was a perfect complement to the wings. The flatbread we went with was a white pie with tomatoes, prosciutto, arugula and a balsamic glaze. Just divine and such a delicious main. With such great local beers to boot, definite recommendation!

Yelp
This is a great place to watch sports and catch up with your friends. I got the Delhi chicken rice bowls and it was delicious. There are plenty of indoor seatings, perfect for a large group of people. They also have special menu on different occasions. When I went it was Mardi Gras so they had a special Mardi Gras menu.

Yelp
Sat at the bar and had a great experience. Staff was great and food was really good. I was just in town for the night and it was around the corner from the Logan. Glad i found it on Yelp

Yelp
Big menu here with lots to choose from. Spacious and inviting inside, but gets loud with the high ceilings. Prices are okay, food quality decent and tasty. Drinks a bit expensive but a large list. Servers are a bit slower to get around to you. Overall a pretty good spot. Thanks

Yelp
We have been visiting from Dallas for the last 5 days and this is by far the best place we've eaten in Philly! Great location, great service, great environment! If we were here longer, we'd definitely come back. I got a Philly cheesesteak earlier in the visit from Reading Terminal and it doesn't hold a candle to the cheesesteak I got here. A must visit! Steve was our server and he was excellent! He made us love Philly even more!

Yelp
My order: bbq pulled pork nachos, house white wine. (Dine-in) Food pros: the nachos were pretty tasty! I give them 2-3 stars though. Good flavour as well. I liked that they were served in a cast iron skillet. The house white wine was pretty good too, at $9/glass. Food cons: if you're going to say the nachos are "pulled pork nachos", I expect to see pulled pork in a reasonable quantity, *especially* for $13.25. There was probably less than a spoonful of the pork- hidden in the middle of the nachos. I also expected a larger portion for the price, considering there was hardly any meat. to further delve into it, the chips were a bit stale. Establishment Pros: the ambiance was lovely! It was hopping on this Wednesday night- even at around 7:30! It's also centrally located with plenty of seating. Establishment Cons: though friendly, the service was slow. Not sure what to attribute this to. It took a while for the waitress to come back and check on me. Though when the food order went in, the time from ordering to eating wasn't slow at all. Would I come back? Sure. But I wouldn't get the nachos.

Yelp
Fantastic service. Didn't have to wait long for for a table or my drinks. Maybe it was because of light rain either way I felt comfortable there.

Yelp
Perfect spot for getting my fill of March madness and brunch! Both very tasty super tasty entrées though honestly I would've wanted more tator tots! But hey that's me love my tots! The bartender was really quick to answer when I couldn't decide between shrimp n grits or the short rib fried rice. I mean short rib fried rice just sounds amazing right?!? He indicated that he ate that once a week. SOLD! Btw should you order it hope you are HUNGRY! The serving was humongous. But isn't brunch an indulgence plus throw in March madness and a nice preview to springtime warmth. I would also suggest that if you order the big chick ask for a side of the country gravy - super tasty. You will love it So why the 4 stars? I kept smelling something that was kinda sour best way to describe it. Not sure if it's my super sensitive nose or a dish rag that's seen one too many spilled drinks. In any event didn't seem to bother anyone but me. Can't wait to return though to get that country gravy w/the big chick

Yelp
My husband and I went to City Tap House Logan for a casual dinner. It is the perfect place to catch a game at the bar or for a night out with friends. The environment is upbeat and the servers were so patient and kind. We ordered a few drinks and they all were enjoyable and strong. For our entrees we ordered the ten spice wings (9/10), charred Brussels sprouts (8/10), the honey hot chicken sandwich (7/10) and mac and cheese (4/10). Although the mac and cheese could have used some more seasoning, our meal was delicious. I highly recommend the wings. What I will say is that all of our food came out fresh and hot. For dessert, we enjoyed the bourbon pecan pie (6/10), and churros (7/10). The churros would have been better with more cinnamon sugar. Overall, we enjoyed our time at city tap house. I definitely recommend if you are looking for good food, good drink and good vibes.

Nina B.

Yelp
Consistent bar eats. Enough seating that I can always be sat without reservations. Solid spot in the city.

Yelp
Next to no one inside, and yet couldn't accommodate 2 people at 4:00 on a Wednesday. Hard pass. There are better options in Philly.

Devin G.

Yelp
Great lunch and fun people! Thank you for being so accommodating. I love that it was walking distance to the hotel

Yelp
Went in on a Saturday for brunch. Ordered breakfast burrito and the big chick: chicken and biscuit with sausage gravy. Both meals were made well. chef gave me a stingy coat of gravy, but I asked for more and they brought a small bowl of hot sausage gravy. After that all was well with the world. I also ordered fresh orange juice and vodka, but I think my drink was mostly water with a splash of orange juice and splash of vodka.

Yelp
Large space and large beer menu with great views for football. Hush puppy appetizer was awesome but not sure there was really much crab in there. Chicken and waffles - chicken was a bit dry. Tuna Poke bowl is not a traditional poke bowl and was missing several of the named ingredients and had other ingredients that weren't named. It was really an arugula and cabbage, shaved Brussels salad with some tuna on top. There were 3, yes 3 pieces of farro and no avocado. Very odd.
