Where to Eat Detroit’s Best Sandwiches

"Former food truck Matt & Mo’s is now the resident kitchen at the Doug’s Delight stand in Hazel Park, serving up phenomenal Italian beef sandwiches and Guernsey ice cream. The beef for each sandwich is slow roasted in its own juices and a special spice mix and topped with spicy giardiniera and bell peppers. Order one dry, wet, or dipped in sauce at the walk-up window." - Serena Maria Daniels

I’m posting basically the same pics as everyone else. Fried ravioli was outstanding. I got the Italian sausage and beef combo. Next time I’ll just get the Italian beef, the sausage was good but it was a bit too much IMO. Strawberry shake was good as well.

Google
Hands down that Italian beef is the BEST I've ever had! We stopped last Night while on our way to pick up our grandson! I accidentally ordered it wet with mild giardinara, but damn it was amazing! The bread was still holding up a few hours later when I finished it 😁. I'm happy that Elijah lives down the street, but I will be stopping by every time we get him! Pictured are the Ravioli, Chicago dog w/no sport peppers,Italian sausage add provolone, and the Italian Beef w/mild and wet! 😋😋. It's a perfect dinner and dessert date! 😍 If you haven't tried them PLEASE Do! And the customer service is Awesome.

Google
I don’t leave reviews often, but this Italian beef sandwich blew my mind. The hot giardinera was perfectly spiced, the beef was sliced thin and PILED on, and the jus was super flavorful. This was the best sandwich I’ve hard in a long time!

Google
Good eats, definitely was full. Hazel park could use some more development to help the atmosphere.

Google
The Italian beef is amazing. The fries are some of the best. Add cheese sauce to dip and you won't regret it. I'm so sad it took me so long to try, I will be back soon!

Google
All I can say is the Italian beef sandwiches are so damn good. I have ordered catering for football games and its always a hit. The sandwiches for lunch and fried ravioli as an app are unbeatable. Thank you for always providing an excellent product!

Google
This is my favorite ice cream shop in the world I had to follow them on Facebook to keep up with their weekly soft serve flavors. I love getting their deep fried ravioli. And they make the best dougies/mixed blizzards. I'll never stop coming here. I just wish they had their flavors out sooner maybe a couple weeks in advance.

Google
After months of wishing, I made it to Matt and Mo's for the Italian beef sandwich. And the best I can say is,it was...ok. Not worth the nearly $15 I spent. Might have tasted better with the provolone cheese, but I didn't want to spend another $1 and change for it. If you want a truly exceptional Italian beef make the drive to Portillos. Their Italian beef sandwich for me was a religious experience!

Yelp
Matt & Mo's is located inside the ice cream shop, Doug's Delight. Its most notable menu item is the Italian beef sandwich. The sandwich originated in Chicago, so I like that Matt & Mo's has a replica of Wrigley Field's ivy wall. On the flip side, I didn't like being charged a 4% fee for paying with a card. My wife ordered a pepperoni pizza puff along with French fries. The pizza puff fell apart too easily, and was basically a larger version of a Totino's pizza roll. The fries were standard. With my sandwich, I ordered poutine. The consistency and flavor of the gravy made the poutine much better than average. As for the Italian beef, it did not disappoint. I regret getting just sweet peppers, as I should have gotten either hot or mild peppers with the sweet. I did get the whole sandwich dipped in au jus, which was the right move. This was my first time having an Italian beef, so it's hard to judge, but I definitely enjoyed it. Next time, I will bring cash to pay, and might even try some of the other menu items. I look forward to trying Doug's Delight, as well.

Yelp
I am a complete addict for Italian beef. In this place, definitely serves my craving Italian beef was an amazing sandwich wonderful tender beef served on a roll that held up to all the juices that were coming off of the meat. They had a nice balance of heat and sweet with the peppers, a fantastic beef sandwich. The french fries that offered were fantastic as well. Can't wait to make a return trip.

Yelp
The most delicious sandwiches in all of the land!!! If it wasnt an hour away Id go more often. We split a big ol order of fries between two people and had plenty. The Italian Beef, spicy onwet is the only way to go! Staff was quick but friendly and engaging, happy to talk about the food and location. Prices are a little higher than you might expect but are still affordable and priced right for what youre getting. Would 100% recommend to anyone who loves a big meaty sammy

Yelp
In my humble opinion, this is Theo place to go for an authentic Chicago-style Italian Beef, a la "The Bear!" Matt was born and raised in Chicago, and brought his Italian family recipe here in 2015. Initially operating out of a food truck, they took over historic Doug's Delight Ice Cream Shop, located in Hazel Park, in 2020. There is no indoor seating, but there are outdoor picnic benches with umbrellas. They have kept the ice cream shop, and feature special flavors, such as banana. Their Italian beef sandwich ($13.50 - $14.50) comes with either spicy or mild peppers. You can order it dry, wet, or dipped where the whole sandwich is submerged in broth. I always have it dipped, but that's not very doable in my opinion if you are getting it to take home. They also offer great appetizers like deep-fried ravioli.

Yelp
I couldn't even tell you what my thoughts were. I was too busy, chewing and admiring how amazing French dips in heaven must be because this is got to be really close.

Yelp
If you want a sandwich that'll knock you out in a good way and fill you up, this place is a must try. You order at one window and pickup at the other. They were quick but not so quick that you think it's some microwaved nonsense. It's delicious, the beef is fantastic but the hot peppers make it even more enjoyable. I'm not someone that can handle a ton of heat so when I say hot peppers, they're not over the top or unbearable. They are a delicious complimentary piece to the amazing beef. I will warn you to eat it quickly, if you are driving some distance before you bite into it, the sub bun will be soggy. But even then it's delicious. The toasted ravioli is a great side, it's crunchy and if you eat it too quickly the insides will burn your mouth like a good old pizza roll. But man, what a spot and what amazing food, definitely put this place on your list.

Yelp
Loved the dipped Italian beef here!! It's so tasty and filling. The toasted raviolis are also incredible and come with a marinara dipping sauce. The service was so friendly and did everything with a smile. This is place is takeout only so you can place your order online ahead of time or walk up to the window when you get there!

Yelp
Incredible Italian beef sandwich! Fantastic poutine!! Great customer service! Quick response when I picked up my order.

Yelp
Since Hippo Dogs closed in Troy I've been grudgingly driving to the east side hell scape of Sterling Heights for Portillos... Their Italian Beefs are horrible... Now I have Matt & Mo's to get from. They're sandwiches are really good, mine could have used another second in the gravy to be as wet as I like them but the peppers and seasoning was on point!. Also they give you more meat than you'd get at Johnnie's so win, win! I give them 5 stars, but the the bun on a Chicago dog I got was stale. It's January and they probably don't sell a lot of them compared to the beef. Anyway... Good Stuff! I'll be back for more. I didn't see a polish on the menu, I miss that Polish Hippo and the Maxwell Polish is another Chicago treat I miss.

Yelp
Looking for a fun lunch adventure, we found an Eater Detroit article that recommended Matt and Mo's as a great sandwich spot. I lived in Chicago for 15 years and the hubs was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, so we were pumped to find a possible new hot dog and Italian beef spot. We ordered a Chicago dog and an Italian beef, and split the two. The Italian beef was out of this world and the Chicago hotdog was the best Chicago dog we have had outside of Chicago. Our ten year old son enjoyed his plain hot dog with ketchup. The only negative was that when we asked for a refill on our pop, the young woman that waited on us said she didn't think they did refills. It was a sunny but windy and chilly day so we ate in our car, but I'd love to come back on a nice day and eat at the picnic tables that they have. We will for sure be back!

Yelp
Best toasted ravioli I've ever had and their marinara is to die for. I don't think I've eaten anything else whenever I stopped.

Yelp
I really enjoy this spot. It's outdoors and in a great little area. I appreciate their customer service as well as the small menu with a great variety. I am Obsessed with their toasted ravioli (the sauce could use a little spice). Their Chicago hot dogs are beef and delicious. I probably grab 1 every week. Enjoy!

Chris M.

Yelp
Legit Chicago Italian beef. Will be back to try a Chicago dog soon. Very friendly worker told me I'd like it better than portillos and she was not wrong! Chicagoland people this is the spot!

Yelp
Absolutely the best hot Italian beef with peppers in the area! Kudos to all involved!

Yelp
Inspired by watching The Bear on Hulu I decided to seek out an Italian beef sandwich near by. Matt & Mo's shares space with an ice cream shop in Hazel Park. The walk up window attendant was very nice and helpful answering all my questions. I ordered the Italian beef with hot & sweet peppers, dipped. I also ordered a side of fries with the honey sriracha & 1000 Island dipping sauce. It was a very good meal. The one thing I noticed about the Sando was the meat was a bit dry even though it was dipped. I did use some of the dipping sauce on the Sando and it was pretty good. I would go and try it again for sure. The peppers were good with the dipped bread and meat.

Yelp
This is an outdoor area next to a combo of an ice cream stand and a beef sandwich shop. Picnic tables scattered around, you go to one window to order and pay, and another to pick up after 20 minutes or so. Most people are there for the Italian Beef, dry, wet, or dipped. They also have pork sandwiches, and fries with different toppings and some other sides. We went Sat at noon and they were crowded. Very limited lot parking, and side street parking. When we were there the cops were working the parking hard to find violations they could ticket. It was really good food. Maybe not quite worth the price and the wait (40 minutes between in line to order and waiting for the food), but good.

Dan R.

Yelp
Had a beef dipped with hot peppers and it was excellent. The roll held up very well and the beef itself was tender and flavorful. Portion size was excellent.
google avatar

Yelp
Love the food. Best Italian Beef outside of Chicago. Give it a try. Carry Out only in the winter unless you like to sit outside in the cold.

Yelp
In my mind, a staple in the metro area... Matt & Mo's always has great tasting quality fresh hot food. Always. I've been five or so times now, tried many items on the menu, never had food I didn't like. This is THE place in the metro area for Italian beef. There may be others that have it, but are they as good? I don't know. All I know is at least a couple times I've been I've seen folks from Chi-town walk-up and give compliments on the Italian beef, and Chicagoans will keep it real about Italian beef. I've enjoyed the sausage on buttered garlic bread as well as the chi-dog and the coney when you're in the mood for those. The damage can get a little high for fast food but it ain't your normal fast food. Everything is made with care... and they have ice cream too.
google avatar

Aaron B.

Yelp
This was a soft 4, should probably be a 3-3.5. Got the Italian beef today, dipped. First time here. I think it has potential, but there's a few things missing.. The beef itself is flavorful, but I was immediately struck, and I mean first bite, by how flavorless the sub bun is. I mean it's like completely empty tasting. Maybe that was the point considering it might get dipped or wet, but I disagree... the bun should have lots of flavor, it's the vehicle for your meat! Combined with the lack of taste on the bun was the need for salt. In the beef and the jus, and even in the bun too. Crispelli's makes amazing bread, but I don't think they do sub buns and if anything Tringali's sub buns are decent enough with more flavor. I'll be back to try it again and other items and it's nice to have Guernsey ice cream so close by!

Yelp
The best Italian beef subs !! Excellent service with smiles .. The Chicago hotdogs so delicious !!

Yelp
I've never reviewed this place?! I live very close and this place is amazing. Owners are friendly and responsive, and the staff are always great. Food is fantastic. Highly recommend!

Yelp
OMG awe LOVE this place!!! This has taken the place of our autumn cider mill tradition! The cider donut & pumpkin/vanilla cinnamon twist soft serve creations are TDF! And we always order wayyyyyy too much because I want to try it all! (It's ok- made it home and fed us the next day too!) My husband likes the half&half: hot beef and sausage sandwich, jus on the side (also comes with a marinara) & we both love the poutine. (Big ole cheese curds on there!) I'm a "mostly vegetarian " so I come for the desserts and OMG! (See pics). Couldn't decide between the cider donut sundae or the glazed donut sandwich so got them both, and honestly, both fantastic but I'll side with the sundae if I have to pick only one. (It made it home into the freezer and I ate it for breakfast today ) Bring your dogs too- they have Pup Cups for only $1- water's also only $1- which is so fair of them- With tip we spent $40- ordered online and it was ready exactly when they said it would be Tables out front that someone has taken the time to add beautiful mums and really make it feel welcoming and improves the neighborhood- you can tell they take pride in their business and it's appreciated by us all.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years, and it seemingly gets more and more expensive every season. I'm a person who appreciates quality and good service, but there comes a point where it starts to feel ridiculous. Today I got the Italian sausage and fries. With no drink you're looking at about 17 bucks worth of food. The wait times here have always been a bit long, so instead of opting for a $3 soft drink, I went to a nearby gas station and filled up and got a drink since I was on a lunch break. I came back right in time and when I walked to the window, asked a young lady working if I could have a small cup of ice. Before she could turn around to make it, what I'm assuming was a manager with a nasty disposition, whispered in her ear that "that'll be 50 cents". Nowhere on the menu or on the building does it state you have to pay 50 cents for a cup of ice, and in the moment it felt very selective and unnecessary. After nearly spending 20 bucks for an okay sausage and some pretty basic fries, I feel like a cup of ice shouldn't be that big of a budgetary concern, and if it is, clearly post the pricing. The interaction left a bad taste in my mouth for sure, and definitely made me reconsider the money I've spent patronizing this place with my loved ones over the years.

Zac P.

Yelp
I get a text standing at the window that my food is ready. With a 20% tip- online order and I can see the bag. They look at it and open the window nothing short of 8 times before they look at it a ninth time and announce my order. 20% tip - 50$ dollars total and they just leave me hanging. Seriously was fuming. I don't get how you can have an order ready. Look at it multiple times and not give it to the person after sending a text saying your food is ready.
google avatar

Terry K.

Yelp
Stopped by to get 2 Italian beef sandwiches to go. Ordered wet with provolone and peppers. Was surprised by how much they were for only being 6" long. Took them home for later. When I warmed one up and opened it up I didn't notice any cheese. It was good but could taste more of a bullion beef taste then anything. I've never paid that much for a sandwich that short.
google avatar

Stacia G.

Yelp
Wow! Went here on a reasonable weather Saturday about 1/2 hour after they opened. It was already busy and we were in line for a bit and waited about 25 minutes for our food. Ordering was simple- when you could decide what you would eat. You can order online and I believe only when they are already open- which might help you with the waiting time. Had the hot Italian beef dipped. This was pretty wet and they do not slack on amount of meat that they give you. The peppers add up quickly with a heat factor. It is filling so I would go with appetite. The table shared the toasted raviolis and they were awesome! Highly recommend. The siracha ranch French fries weren't my favorite and it could be the hot with already hot (spicy) Italian beef. When I return gonna try the Chicago dog and the sweet potato fries. They also have ice cream!! This looked good also and of course comes faster than the food. I was tooo full. Maybe next trip!
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
Closest you can get to a Chicago Italian beef without driving to Chicago (and yes, better than Portillo's). Tons of juicy beef packed into a soft and fresh roll. I got sweet and hot peppers (they use giardiniera, just like you would get in Chicago; next time I would order extra), and au jus on the side for dipping. I also got a side of shoestring fries (perfectly crisp) with some cheese sauce. Just be aware that it's an ice cream stand, and you're sitting on benches outside. All part of the charm.
google avatar

Dan G.

Yelp
Chicago comfort food at its finest!!! Friendly service! Ice cream or shakes to wash it all down.

Thomas T.

Yelp
food gets a 5...but it's expensive as hell and the wait for food is kinda wild....but the food makes me keep going back. Delicious. I'm just amazed how long it takes. to get a Chicago dog and fries. Dude came up after me and ordered a few sandwiches and his order was up before mine. FIX THE SERVICE

Quentin P.

Yelp
Well this is my first time coming to Matt & Mo's and I have to say the Italian beef sandwich was awesome .I will be back.
google avatar

Jamie J.

Yelp
Cute little ice cream stand with outdoor seating with umbrellas. Food was incredibly expensive and they need to do something about their bread selection for their Italian beef. Bread was way too thick and dry even after ordering it wet. Tasted like something you could buy at Kroger. Service was on the slow side.
google avatar

Roger I.

Yelp
After having ice cream at Doug's Delight the night before, we decided to come back for Matt and Mo's food items. My wife got the sausage and I got the beef sandwich. Both were very delicious. The next time we go back, I want to get the sausage because hers tasted very good.
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
Run don't walk to this spectacular place. We came here last weekend for the "wet" Italian beef sandwich with sweet peppers. OMG!! I couldn't stop thinking about the darn sandwich all week. Yesterday (Friday) we had to come again for the Italian beef and then the sweet sirachia 1000 island fries. OMG, OMG....this is THE place. The fries and sandwich were the most amazing eats. We will continue to come here. I'm sure everything on their menu is amazing!!!
google avatar

Karim J.

Yelp
I remember making a trip to Chicago and stopping at the famous Al's Beef. Those sandwiches are so unique, with the entire thing being dunked into jus and the bread completely drenched in beefy goodness. We finally have a place like that here in Michigan, and it tastes just like I remember. I was a little annoyed because I was under the impression that my sandwich had giardiniera (a special relish), yet when I got it there were no additional toppings. I really didn't feel like going back to have them add it, but the sandwich was still great. I just have to make sure to ask for it next time since it's clearly not included with the default order. The toasted ravioli was extremely satisfying with the marinara sauce on the side as well, then washing it all down with a classic root beer float. Will definitely come back
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
Italian beef was super bland , went back for a Chicago dog was disappointed pretty sure they boil the dogs. A min or two on a flat top would have vastly improved the flavor. If you're looking for a taste of Chicago this is not it unfortunately. Service was on point and fast. Cute outside dining experience. Also got a malt from Doug's. The ice cream joint that's attached to it. They completely destroyed it with what I imagine was a 1/4 coup of malt. Three strikes you're out, really tried to like this spot. If Hazel Park is gonna come up local businesses need to step it up, as a local small business owner I can attest to quality control is what people want and need. Good luck, hope quality improves.
google avatar

Jim K.

Yelp
This place has the most amazing Italian Beef sandwiches! Being from Chicago I am a beef addict and they are not easy to find in Michigan. The owners, from Chicago, are really hard working people that take pride in what they serve. If you try a beef ask for your sandwich on garlic bread, you won't regret it. Think I will stop in today!!
google avatar

Tony M.

Yelp
GREAT FOOD! Slightly over SALTY though. The "ICE CREAM" is over priced. Went there and got a double scoop in a cup and it was literally, 4 bites! $4, so a $1 a bite. Soft serve is just as small and that was $5!! Go to Kroger and do yourself a flavor and buy a Half Gallon for $3.

Mike M.

Yelp
Addictive! The Italian Beef sandwich is the best sandwich I have ever eaten. Ever. Period. A couple of tips. If you order the Au Jus on the side get extra. They sell little cups on the side for $1. The sweet peppers are very mild and add a nice flavor. The hot peppers are HOT. Very HOT. I suggest getting them on the side because they can over power the meat. The beef is the star. Sooo tender. But the juice is essential. Getting the sandwich dipped into the juice is really really good. Great way to order. We use Uber Eats for delivery and the food travels well. This place is a hidden gem. I would give it 10 stars.

Yelp
My buddy sent me a Tik Tok video made by @chowdowndetroit Seoung Lee. He recommended the Italian beef sandwich, among other things. So my buddy and I planned on have a late lunch here today. We got here around 3:30, and there was a line. This place was jamming. We stood in line, I think, for about ten, maybe 12 minutes before I got to order. I orderer my food and they told me about 30 Minutes. So I have to point out at this point, I was starving, and I had not had anything to eat all day. So sometimes, I can be my own worst enemy. I am like, wow, is this place overhyped? Am I going to be disappointed? So they finally call my name. I rush up and grab my sandwich and Root Beer. It was such a lovely day out. I went and sat back down at the picnic tables they have outside. I tore into my bag and unwrapped my sandwich, and took a massive bite out of it. Wow, this sandwich was amazing. Hands down, I am coming back here. The only thing I messed up with is that I should have orderer ice cream when I ordered my food. I was still hungry when I inhaled my sandwich, but I didn't want to get back into a long line. Not trying to jab at them the were super busy and I should have been better at ordering.

Jaye A.

Yelp
Came here after hearing about it in a morning radio show. Looked at yelp first, yep, I wanna try this place! Was not disappointed in the least! Haven't tried the ice cream but everything else was way above and beyond. Will definitely be back next summer.

Yelp
Great hot beef option in OC when you have a craving. The beef is tender, love the peppers. Could use a little more seasoning but overall worthy of being added to the sandwich rotation.

Yelp
What a neat little place!! The Italian beef was perfect and we loved the ravioli. We will absolutely stop in again.

Yelp
So I drove all the way from Romulus to Hazel Park to try there Chicago style Italian beef, being that I was born and raised in Chicago for the first half of my life I definitely wanted a taste of home. Right from the start is was awkward. They said they put the cheese on the bottom instead of on top of the sandwich. and when I asked could they put it on top, I got backlash!! " We don't do that/I don't know if we can do that"... it's freaking cheese !!!! But they reinsured me that THIS IS THE ONLY TIME THEY'll do it.... Once I got my food, I sat down outside the restaurant and began eating. Surprisingly, this was the closest to a Chicago Italian beef that I have had since living in Michigan, so that being said it was worth the drive from Belleville to hazel park. My kid had the cookies'n'cream ice cream. She said it was the best she ever had!!! Overall it was good, the biggest downfall is the price. It's $10 before taxes.... at least 4-5$ over the price you would pay in you were in Chicago.

Yelp
My son found Matt and Mo's on TikTok so we decided to check them out for an early dinner. Matt and Mo's is located inside Doug's Delight ice cream shop. When we arrived there was quite a line which seemed be a good sign. Orders are placed at a carry out window and there are a few picnic tables if you want to eat there. The menu options are limited with the Chicago style Italian beef sandwiches taking center stage. We ordered 2 Italian beef sandwiches "sweet and wet" (one with Provolone) and split an order of fries. The modestly sized sandwiches tasted fine but for $31 (with tip) it was pretty overpriced and underwhelming. I am a huge fan of small businesses and am always on the hunt for unique dining experiences but this really missed the mark for me.

Sarah S.

Yelp
wow one of the best meals i've ever had! I had the chicago dog the ravioli and the apple pie nachos. YUM
google avatar

Yelp
I think there is a duplicate entry in Yelp for Doug's Delight. This is the same as Matt & Mo's for those who are confused. Matt & Mo's has some fantastic hot dipped beef sandwiches. I am mostly vegetarian but those sandwiches will make you cheat a little. They also have some great waffle sweet potato fries with homemade sauces. I have not tried the fried ravioli yet but I'm dying to. They also sell Italian Sausage and Chicago style hot dogs. The ice cream and sweets are worth a visit too :-)

Yelp
Out Supporting that's what I do how about you. For the Love of Chi Town only place in Michigan got it right perfection I say. Just opened a physical location inside Doug's Delight Hazel Park open Thursday- Sunday. The special order I placed with 2 Vienna Beef Hotdogs Double Damn Vienna All Beef Hot Dogs Yes they pack 2 in da bun.
