The Best Restaurant Meals Eaten by Portland Food Writers | Eater Portland

"I still think about the chả cá lã vọng—turmeric catfish—Mattas served during its residency at Lil Dame: turmeric catfish complemented by fresh dill, basil, scallion, and mint on soft warm vermicelli felt like the essence of comfort without sacrificing flavor." - Eater Staff

So I had no idea what this place was, or its 70+ year history being in mesa. I saw Mexican food and came. I came on taco Tuesday by chance and LOVED it. I got the following tacos: Ground beef Shredded chicken Green Chile pork Green Chile beef Shredded beef They were all crunchy shells and I’m super happy I went with crunchy shells, it was like biting into a crispy happy memory of my childhood of really good Mexican food. Hands down my favorite tacos were the shredded beef and green chile options but I would eat 5 tacos of any of the meats. The guy behind the counter was so nice, he offered the taco suggestions for me and was spot on. He was friendly and fast and the food came out in probably 5 minutes and absolute perfection. This place is 100% worth a visit!

Didn't expect such quality. Everything was made perfectly fresh tortilla, soft shredded definitely cooked beef and the sauces are amazing as well. Everyone should come here. if you want quality definitely go here. Prices are better than the big chains too.

Google
Food was not good. $35 for two items and jalapeño sauce (which was a basic red salsa, weird description). This is not carne asada, none like I’ve ever seen. Ordered a carne asada burro and fries. This is a pot roast, closer to machaca than anything, a mystery meat. Had zero flavor

Google
Started off on a high note with genuinely great customer service – the staff was friendly and attentive, which I really appreciated. Unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to that positive first impression. The carne asada was very bland and tasted more like plain boiled meat than properly seasoned or grilled carne asada; it had an off-putting flavor that made it hard to enjoy. The salsa was watery and lacked depth – it reminded me more of a jarred grocery-store brand like Pace than fresh restaurant salsa. I ordered the carne asada fries as a meal, and while the portion was decent, the overall dish felt underwhelming because of the bland meat and minimal toppings/seasoning. Given the price point, I was expecting more flavor and quality. I’d love to come back if the kitchen tightens up the seasoning and preparation of the carne asada, because the service alone makes this place worth another shot. Right now, though, it’s hard to justify returning when the main protein falls so flat.

We loved having a late lunch here at Mattas! Last time I was at Mattas was about 50 years ago. My late father ALWAYS ordered the Chile Relleno. I got a Chile Relleno and a beef taco (a la carte). Loved both. The mild salsa is so fresh and delicious. We bought a jar to take home for Superbowl Sunday. Highly recommend this pleasant and clean place.

This morning is perfect for hot tasty abondigas soup 🍲 , and the man at the counter was so nice. He offered us a cup of water for my dog and was super friendly. The foods great, the people are nice, and the patio has the perfect atmosphere in the morning. I'll definitely come back.

10/10 Recommend!! There are a few tables inside and outside If you would like to dine in or you can grab it to go, and you can even get it delivered! I’ve done it all!! And I typically do it weekly! My family is addicted. Everything here is delicious. The crispy tacos, the green chunk pork burro, cheese crisp with guacamole, mini chimis, my favorite is the sour cream, chicken enchilada! And don’t get me started about the chips and sauce. I prefer the hot but the chunky mild one is delicious also. My family likes to mix them together. DELISH!! The portions are great, the price is right and the staff is wonderful! Don’t pass this little spot without giving it a try. I guarantee you WILL be back!

Google
Over the years, locations seem to get smaller. After closing locations on Dobson & Higley I was very disappointed. My family has been eating @ mattas since early 70's. Now I hear of this location a year and a half after opening. Food is still delightful, as I said previously, smaller location, but everything was awesome, thanks for bringing back a location Pete. ADVERTISE! I NEED MY MATTAS FIX!

Yelp
As many mentioned in their reviews- I also grew up going to Matta's, the experience and atmosphere at the current location is nothing like the prior locations. The current location is really just a stand with a few tables for eating in (nothing fancy) but it appeared most people ordered to go. Customer service was great it looked like there was just one person cooking the guy in the front took orders and then went to the back to help put orders together. There was quite a few people waiting on food but the orders came out fairly quick. As for the food you can't go wrong with Robert's Tacos they are just as good as I remember, my only complaint is the hot salsa. The hot salsa was very much on the tomato side and more of a sauce consistency.

Yelp
I used to eat at Mattas as a young child years ago when it was on Main St. I loved it then......when I saw that they moved over in east Mesa and had just a to-go place I decided to give them a try. I will say that a lot has changed since the good old days. The food itself was good, nothing to rave about anymore, but it was good. It was clean on the inside and the people working were very nice. It's nice to see that some little part of an old favorite is still around.

Yelp
Grabbed some food while nearby for work. My burrito was delicious and the cheese crisp was a fun addition just to check them out. The guy who took my phone order was very friendly and got the order perfect. Picking up was fast and again super friendly staff! Didn't dine in but there are some basic tables if you want to stay and eat. I'll definitely be back whenever I'm in the area!

Yelp
My first time at Matta's Mexican place and the food IS AMAZING! The customer service is great! My RELLENO was wonderful, but the next time I'm ordering extra green chili to bring home!

Becky D.

Yelp
I went last night & waited over 25min for my order. It seems the little guys w/small orders mean nothing to the manager. Instead of placing my order, the owner was more concerned about the big order. I asked 3x if my food was ready. "It's coming. It's coming." His cook forgot to cook my order! And the food ended up being horrible.
google avatar

Paula S.

Yelp
Matta's chile relleno. . . chef's kiss! I love the meat stuffing instead of only cheese, like most restaurant's do. And their beans! And their hot sauce! These are the three things that have me hooked.
google avatar

Lindsay D.

Yelp
Great food and service. Smaller family owned Mexican establish with authentic dishes. Loved the chimichanga, beef tacos and Mexican pizza.

Yelp
Watch out look out; food ahead! Marta's opened up nearby and thought I would give it a go. As it always seemed busy. Stopped on a Saturday morning to grab a breakfast burrito. The staff is friendly and the place is pretty simple, not a bad thing. Ordered my food, breakfast burrito, and it was ready pretty quick. At home, opened up to see what they had cooked up. The burrito was ok, it included potatoes (the best part), chopped up sausage patties( the round ones) eggs and cheese. The sauce that came with it (side) was a bit bland, for my liking, a bit heavy on the tomato flavor side. Over all, if you like this kind of burrito, this place is for you. Personally, I favor a bit more spice and different ingredients. Again, they are pretty busy, so there is definitely an appeal for sure.

Debbie D.

Yelp
First time here had the carnitas tacos they were out of this world amazing so flavorful and the dipping juice and hot sauce topped it off amazingly! The service was friendly and helpful and it is super clean. I'll be back for sure!!

Yelp
We arrived early Saturday afternoon and we had three Number 4's and a cheese crisp. Fantastic! I just wish they were closer to Phoenix. Larry (the number 4 guy)

Yelp
Cure your Mexican food cravings with this little spot! There are a few tables inside and outside if you want to eat there. I just grabbed it go and feasted at home. Mmmmm mmmm good! Good portions, priced right, friendly staff and the hot sauce is addictive!! I have a feeling I'll be there weekly!!

S W.

Yelp
I really wish I could write a better review. Ordered a chicken enchilada, beef taco, rice and beans. Everything was extremely bland, zero taste. It's like they even forgot salt exists to add flavor. Chicken enchilada - bland. Beans - bland, rice - bland, taco - yep bland. Add to that it cost $16.xx for this meal and they refused to include chips when I asked. Sure as heck wasn't about to give them more money. It's like after being in the east valley for 40+ years they forgot how to make good food at a fair price. Definitely won't be back again. Much better options around.

Jeremy P.

Yelp
Great food at a chill spot. Quick, friendly and delicious. Stuffed burro with green chile pork!

Yelp
if you're looking for a mexican spot that treats you like family and the food never disappoints; this is the place to go! the employees at the register are incredibly kind every time i stop in & they never fail to make me feel welcomed and cared for. I have always enjoyed the sandy's special if i'm looking for a fuuuullll MEAL but the mini chimis never miss either. to top it all off, mattas makes a MEAN salsa... don't forget to grab a jar before you take off because i promise you will want that when you get home!

Cheryl K.

Yelp
Been with Mattas for 30 years...on main st, riverside and higley & brown. I ordered my cheese crisp with shredded beef and there was no crisp about it! Soggy, was served on a cardboard pizza board and when I tossed my trash, the table was moist. If it wasn't for buying the hot sauce... drove 50 miles rt to get it, I'd never go back again. Very disappointed in the cutbacks a restaurant of 70 years would do. They may as well close this one and only sell the hot sauce!

Yelp
Was in the area today and decided I give this place a try for lunch. Overall very impressed, ordered a Chicken Enchilada special with (lots and lots of) Rice and Beans. Food was tasty and of good quality. The person who took my order was very friendly and professional. The food was prepared correctly and quickly. So, I agree there is not much ambiance, but seems the bulk of their business is take-out. However, this a small store front in a shopping center so I ain't expecting anything fancy. All I care is the place is clean, fully stocked (napkins, straws, utensils) and the food comes out in a reasonable time and as expected. All of the above occurred during my visit. If you are expecting ambiance go to a chain in their own buildings such like Nando's, Garcia's. Mi Amigos, Serano'a, etc. Nonetheless, for a little north of $10 including a drink it is a great value which is becoming harder and harder to achieve. I was there to eat lunch, not wine and dine a client or a date. This will be one of those places if I happen to be in the area at the right time, I'll drop again.

Yelp
I visited this restaurant on a Wednesday afternoon at about 3:00. I was with my mother in law and we were just a little hungry so we decided to split the Potato Tacos. Reasonable price and good portion. We each had one and then we were full. Lots of cheese. The service was ok. They were nice but the cashier was very dry and just seemed like he didn't wanna be there. This is a nice restaurant and I will be back and hope to see it do well.

Daniel H.

Yelp
I'm not going to sit here and lie and tell you this food is good it's garbage at best. I could go on and on about the customer service and the food, but I'll try and keep it short the quality of the food is equivalent to microwaveable taquitos. The taquitos were unbelievably overcooked it was physically unbearable to eat, it took me a solid 45 seconds to finish chewing the food. Don't get me going about there supposedly "Refried beans" the beans tasted like hot dog water with cheese on it and had the texture of cat food. The customer service was equally as bad with the guy at the front on his phone he also never washed his hands picking his nose and giving us our food. I wouldn't recommend Matta's to my worst enemy.
google avatar

Darwin S.

Yelp
Food was ok I thought maybe it was like the old Marta's in Mesa. Not quite. The staff was friendly. It just needs more decorations inside the restaurant.
google avatar

Mike C.

Yelp
So it pains me to give Mattas a 3 star as I have been going to their restaurants since I was 4 years old. My parents went there before me and it has been a family tradition. Sadly after they moved to Mesa Riverview that is when their quality took a hit. The staff has always been friendly and I love to support them. But the quality of ingredients they use have not been the best. However their prices remain affordable comparable to other Mexican restaurants and I can't complain there. I still recommend them but I would like to see unprocessed quality ingredients like it used to be. You can clearly tell that they use canned meat which doesn't taste bad, but it's not the taste you expect. Owners if you are reading this I promise you that the valley would pay more for higher quality, I love the family business and want it to continue. If these changes happen I will gladly change my review.

Darvin D.

Yelp
I grew up eating Mattas on Main St. It is more of a nostalgic flavor and over the years it has gotten worse and more expensive. I am appalled at the prices. I get that everything has increased, but they have increased more. The service is ok but not anything special, and there is zero ambiance. I think I am finally done.
google avatar

Richard D.

Yelp
The food was below par. The taco I had was extremely greasy and the stuffed Chile relleno had a strange flavor.

Yelp
Mattas has been through various stages in its long life. Beginning with the original location on Main Street just down the street from the temple, to a location up in Pinetop, to the location that recently closed on Higley to this newest location on Baseline and Crismon in east Mesa. Most of the time the food is good, sometimes not so good, but today the food was excellent! So so good, bringing back 30 years of memories of countless family dinners and date nights. Today, I wanted to keep it simple and order my litmus test, soft ground beef tacos and a cheese crisp. We walked in to the modest place where you order at the counter to eat there or to go. There are three tables inside and 5 tables outside. We chose to sit outside with great views of the Superstition Mountains. They brought our piping hot food out and I could immediately tell that it was the same as always. The awesome tried and true ground beef served in the foil "to go" pans but tasting as amazing as always. The cheese crisp was crispy and cheesy. I was not disappointed. If you know Mattas, then you know! And you really should go and support this old institution at their new location.

S S.

Yelp
Love the food and the service. Hate the new location because seating is very limited.

Yelp
I am 70 years old and have been going to Matta's since I was a kid. Back then, it was probably the premier Mexican food restaurant in Mesa and maybe the whole east valley area. Times have changed. Recipes have been tweaked. The whole restaurant business has changed by Covid, and not for the better. Nowadays, Matta's is just another strip-mall Mexican restaurant with decent food. We went there a few days ago, and I ordered a chimichanga, which is on the menu for $10.95. Unfortunately, what I was charged for was a burrito $8.50, and deep frying, $2.00, and green sauce on top, $1.95. Total $12.45. When I asked about it, the guy at the counter wanted to correct it, but couldn't and called the manager up. Manager looked at it and, instead of opening the register and handing me $1.50, turned and walked back to his office. After a few minutes, I got tired of waiting and left. I'll probably go back to eat there again, because my wife likes it, but the experience left a bad impression.

Seal M.

Yelp
Oh my!!!! The food is absolutely amazing! Catering for a huge crowd of 250. Seriously the best food! Service was excellent. They helped carry to our vehicle and load. Huge success! Will use again & highly recommend.

Susan S.

Yelp
We have been going to Matta's for years! It's very casual and the food is amazing. We are always greeted with a smile and great service.

David B.

Yelp
My family has been going to this restaurant since they opened up over on main street. Miss that location and all the staff that I was so used to seeing there every Friday! Milana was always the server for us, who we loved very much and was very sweet and professional. The food there is absolutely amazing and their hot sauce and salsa is by far one of best! It's definitely one of my favorites!! I hope this establishment never goes away!
google avatar

Jennifer P.

Yelp
The food was really good- we had the matcha a enchilada and the green chili tacos. Both were excellent.
google avatar

Jill S.

Yelp
The food is amazing. Always get extra salsa for later. You won't be disappointed! The sour cream has a delicious kick.

Daniel D.

Yelp
First of all, under a disclaimer, I have been eating mattas for probably about 55 years! I always order the same thing which is three ground beef soft tacos. They are the best in the state of Arizona when it comes to this! I have no idea how they do their taco meat, but it is the best. My wife ended up getting the stuffed burrito with green sauce, and it was completely heavenly! She was so surprised at the taste, the flavor, and the portion of the burrito. The only thing that bums me out about this restaurant is that they are very small right now and I wish that they would go ahead and open a full-blown Mexican restaurant again! We drove all the way from Casa Grande to get our meals tonight, and with this review, you can see that nothing was wrong with it! I am very disappointed with SW giving mattas a one star! I went to use the restroom which is in the back of the restaurant, and they overheard that we came from Casa Grande to eat there. They had a mistake that was made, and they ended up giving us the chicken burrito that was a mistake! This was such a nice gesture! Growing up as a kid, in the town of Mesa, you were either a El Charro fan or a matta's fan. Unfortunately, El Charro is now closed forever, but you can tell that I was always a fan of this restaurant no if ands or buts! I did not look for it last night, but they had the best guacamole that you will ever have at their restaurants! They had a very brisk business going on last night which is great because I want them to succeed more than anything! Thank you so much for everything you did for my wife and myself last night and it will always be remembered!

Lois L.

Yelp
Great experience. I ordered a shreded beef enchilda platter & it was just spicy enough for my tastes. We choose this place because it has a full service dining room-nicely decorated with a Mexico Theme. It is perfect for entertaining your "Gringo out-of state guests" to provide a SW/Meixcan experience in dining The Margaritas are awesome too. And a very nice and capable/well-trained waitress took great care of us. She was very attentive-took great care of us. I definitely will be returning the next time I am craving Mexican food.

Shery S.

Yelp
Finally found a restaurant that has very tasty beef Tacos! The mild salsa and chips are also really good.

Letty W.

Yelp
The food was just not good I couldn't even finish it. I've had better at other places for even cheaper.

Michele L.

Yelp
Wasn't real impressed. First of all, they wouldn't honor the price listed on the menu for a bean & cheese burrito. They made me pay the $7.50 cost which was for meat type burritos. He said there wasn't a choice on his register for the $5.00 burrito that said bean and cheese on the menu (pictured). He even went back and asked people in the back but said it was $7.50. I feel this is misleading. If the menu shows one price, it should be honored. I also got a cheese crisp which was less than desirable. I probably won't be back even though its close to home.

Cami P.

Yelp
Literally always hits right. So gas and everything is delicious. My family frequently comes here as we've been going to the restaurants for as long as I've been alive. We miss the ambiance of the restaurant, but the most important thing is the food and it is . The churros are also delicious always. Hardworking people providing good service always. Love it!

Lawrence G.

Yelp
We used to go to the original mothers in downtown Mesa and it was fantastic and then one closed and they built a new one much smaller and it wasn't as good. We've tried this one and the enchiladas were good. I tried a quesadilla and it was not crispy at all like it hadn't been cooked long enough. I have high hopes for this place, because they have good ancestors, I will continue to return and I hope it's as good as the original.

Rod S.

Yelp
Seems like a popular place but has just mediocre food. Tastes like it came out of a can.

Margaret M.

Yelp
We found it! Apparently the place in Mesa closed, but we found this other related store with a few tables. Same great food. It s a hole in the wall that doesn't disappoint. I bought a jar of salsa to take home because the salsa is THAT good.

David P.

Yelp
came here from denver , have to say it was the best thing i had here on my visit to arizona !

Tom A.

Yelp
The Best!! I miss the days of going to lunch or dinner on Main St. Many wonderful memories with my wife and family there. So happy to be able to have the same amazing food today. Thank you!

Joe K.

Yelp
Food was extremely bland, even the chiles. Worst nachos, mexican pizza, and chicken mini-chimis I've ever tasted. Ground beef was undercooked. Chicken chimis were just boiled chicken in a fried wrapper. The site was the old Geno's, so there was no ambiance whatsoever. For those not familiar with Yelp ratings, I mention this only because Yelp prods you to mention "food, service, and ambiance." As I stated, the location was the old Geno's, so ambiance was almost unachievable. However, good food and customer service were NOT unachievable, but still were wholly lacking. Ordered $40 worth of food and had to throw most away. Manager didn't really care about customer service or customer satisfaction (as long as they got our $40). No offer to make anything right -- even my order, which was not correct. Have heard good reviews about their salsa, but no spice was in evidence in my meal. Given the quality of the food and service (or abject lack of either), I doubt I'll waste my time there again.
