So happy I stumbled upon this place. Had a taste for good Italian and good wine. Was actually headed to a competitors establishment but traffic was bad and I didnt feel like dealing with it. The food here was top tier. Service was great too. It just started off kind of awkward, at least from my perspective. But my waitress warmed up about mid way and the remainder of the service was stellar. I had the lamb appetizer. 🤌🏾 Had a pesto ravioli with Italian ham and cheese filling. Pistachio sauce. Incredible mix of flavors. Cappuccino cheese cake for dessert. Perfect texture. Great flavor. The whole meal including the wine was pure perfection. Will repeat as often as I can.

This place is good on cocktails! We had a great experience and the food was amazing- Definitely will come back to try different food from the menu.

Refined yet cozy vibe. Service was at a chill pace and friendly with good recommendations and understanding of wine pairing. The food was great. Creative touches to the undying classics. Not a cheap place but you get what you pay for, just don't be a Karen.

Google
I love this place! Friendly atmosphere, delicious food and a generous wine list. You can't go wrong with the house made lasagna or gnocchi but everything I've tried has been fresh and flavorful.

Biba, reborn! At least according to my long time Sacramento parents. They can vouch for the OG, and according to them, it compares. Personally, I loved Mattone. It was your classic Italian restaurant with elevated aspects, but the casual and warm family atmosphere that makes it feel like Tori’s having a meal made with love. The lasagne is worth the hype, but I was glad I ordered the homemade ravioli because it was delicious! Portions were decent and the salads were fresh too. Our waiter was lovely and we had a wonderful evening celebrating our first wedding anniversary. I would definitely come back here, and am just grateful the legacy of the place lives on. 🍝

Went to dinner 4th of July weekend and had an Amazing dinner. You have to try the 12 Layer Lasagna. It's perfect texture and taste is to Die for .Love this place can't wait to go again.

Loved the atmosphere of this restaurant. The vibe here was nice & staff was extremely friendly. The lasagna was recommended by our waiter & apparently it’s a popular dish; really good! The menu is kind of difficult to help you decide on what to order but our waiter made great suggestions. The dessert (forgot the name) was recommended by waiter & although it looks heavy; it was actually light and tasted really good.

Delicious food and cocktails. Everything we ordered was great! This was a great restaurant for our anniversary dinner. The food was incredible but the restaurant wasn’t very pretentious. Just good food and a cozy atmosphere.

Yelp
Location: Easy to get to, has a decent sized parking lot, but street parking is also easy and very close Reservations: Easy to make online on Open Table Service: our server was personable and attentive but not smothering. We felt very comfortable and not rushed at all. She checked in after each course to make sure we were pleased with the food/drinks. Ambiance: very classic old Italian restaurant. Nice white tablecloths and tables are spaced nicely apart. It was moderately loud, but it felt lively, not distracting. It was a touch warm inside, but it's also Sacramento in the summer. DRINKS: Mattone Mule- refreshing, classic mule Dirty Martini- a perfect dirty martini with house-stuffed bleu cheese olives Huckleberry Lemon Drop- delicious, tangy, sweet but not too sweet, refreshing- perfect summer cocktail FOOD: Bread basket-- fresh house-made incredible focaccia bread served with olive oil and balsamic. Also came with crispy garlic breadsticks that were packed with flavor. Calamari Fritti- Crispy, perfectly cooked calamari served with a hearty spicy mayo- definitely would get again Pappardelle con Gamberi- WOW I barely have words to describe this dish. The house-made fresh pasta melted in my mouth, with a made-to-order saffron lemon cream sauce that was divine. This is served with a generous amount of shrimp that are cooked perfectly and require zero effort (tails already removed and they are prepared as a perfect bite size). 12 out of 10 Gnocchi del giorno - the Gnocchi of the day was served with a Saffron cream sauce and crispy pancetta- really delicious and well balanced Dessert: Affogato- house made vanilla gelato with freshly brewed espresso, a satisfying execution of a classic Cappuccino cheesecake- house-made, not too sweet but perfect for the end of a great meal Overall everything we had was delicious and made fresh in a nice atmosphere. I highly recommend and will definitely be back!

Yelp
First time at Mattone, came in on a Tuesday night and had the special Petrole sole and my husband had the lasagna for $39 each. I ordered an espresso martini and my husband got a Manhattan, both tasted great. We sat in the bar, atmosphere was nice. I recommend getting a reservation if you would like to sit in the dining room. Service was great, my server was very nice. Would go back again

Yelp
We came on a Tuesday for a birthday dinner! We've been here once before and recommended it to a family member to try since they were craving Italian for their birthday. On Tuesday and Wednesday, they have a fixed dine - in 3 course meal for $39. You get the choice between a soup or salad, an entree, and a dessert. I got the veal cutlets with mash potatoes and spinach. The veal was super tender and the sauce on it was delicious. It paired well with the velvety mash potatoes and fresh spinach. Our server was very nice and attentive. It is a little pricy for a regular dinner but worth it to come for a special occasion.

Yelp
Omg how have I been living in Sacramento and just now finding out about this hidden gem. It was so good we came here back to back nights. The host was like were you guys just here last night and we all just laughed. Food is amazing everything was so good, you really can't go wrong with anything you order here. The ambiance just make you feel relaxed and at home. The staff is one of a kind, wish more places carry the standard they do.

Yelp
I used to come to this restaurant with my grandparents when it was called Esapañol. We have so many fond memories here. It still has the same warm family like feeling. Food is delicious. The minestrone soup of still fantastic. We also tried the pork belly bruschetta and the beet salad. Staff is firmly and service is excellent.

Yelp
Excellent meal from start to finish Called for a same day reservation during the busy holiday season. While they couldn't accommodate us for the time slot we wanted. They were able to book us a little later in the evening. A little while later they called back to say they had a cancellation and could accommodate us earlier. That's amazing service right there. We ordered the calamari, Italian wedding soup was on special and it was fantastic, gnocchi and the lasagna My goodness, the lasagna. It's incredible. 12 layers of homemade thin lasagna pasta. Drinks and service were outstanding and we loved the whole cozy and unassuming vibe of the restaurant. Mattone will be a go to for special family dinners for us.

Yelp
3.5 stars. The pluses: Warm, friendly and attentive service from front to back. Intimate setting and the lighting was right. One of those places where I'd go for a cozy holiday time dinner with its traditional, no frills white tablecloth feel. Or maybe a happy hour drink at the bar. I liked the variety of wine offerings by the glass as well. The rest: I expected more from the food. For starters, the scallops were good but the arancini was kind of gummy/tacky. I had the carbonara as my main and it was a little too saucy and rich (not in the right way). The crème brûlée wasn't bad. It tasted more like a holiday dessert though, with the shortbread and pecans--and very booze/nutmeg forward if you like that. I just didn't feel like the food matched the price point but can appreciate the atmosphere and what they're trying to do here. I might give it another try and get something different, or just try their happy hour.

Yelp
The lasagna, arancini, and all the drinks were absolutely delicious! Service was phenomenal.

Yelp
Friday night date night... We all enjoy being wined and dined, and what better way to do that than at Mattone Ristorante! With reservations made, we arrived at tad bit early, and waited for our table. We were given the choice of sitting in the main dining room, or in what they referred to as their backroom, which is the area used for private parties. I'm so glad that we opted for the back room. It definitely was away from the loud main room, and created the perfect setting for a lovely dinner, and wonderful conversation. We started our meal with aranchi. I've had better. It was good, but not fabulous. The sauce was very spicy and bitter. The lasagna was definitely the hit of the meal, and I would highly recommend ordering it if this is your first time. 10 layers of perfectly cooked spinach lasagna noodles with each layer filled with meat sauce, béchamel, and so much goodness. Each bite was better than the last. When it was served, they added fresh Parm grated at the table on top that melted into the tasty lasagna. We concluded our meal with the house specialty dessert. The zuccoto. Its layers of hazelnuts, cake, tasty filling, robbed in a layer of chocolate, with this lovely sauce at the bottom. The dessert is very filling, very rich, and absolutely shareable. Service was a bit spotty, but staff was friendly, as were the other diners. It's definitely a date worthy restaurant, and there's lovely music playing in the background. The perfectly placed table linens are a nice touch, the flatware could use some updating. They have their own adjoining parking lot with complementary parking. It was a lovely experience, and it's worth making the reservation, and having a special night out.

Yelp
This is unassuming Italian restaurant across from Corti Brothers. There is small parking lot with free parking. The building has no windows but is bright and cheery inside. There are two parts of the establishment, one side is a dining room and an other side is bar area. The hostess greeted us cheerfully upon entry. We were immediately seated as we were early around 6. The later you dine I would recommend reservations. The service was excellent, the food was traditional with some twists. Many people who grew up here love this place.

Yelp
We were visiting Sacramento and I booked Mattone because I saw that it had a lot of good reviews. Our experience exceeded our expectations. The restaurant has a nice welcoming and cozy feel. It was quite busy so it was just a little loud for my 88 yr. old mother but otherwise, we loved the lively atmosphere. The food was really good as was the wine but the thing that stood out the most was our waitress Cass. She was outstanding in every way; a true professional and a kind and thoughtful human being. If we make it back to Sacramento, we will definitely go back to Mattone and have our fingers crossed that Cass will be our waitress again.

Yelp
Don't sleep on this local place! Get reservations and go. They have free parking. It feels old school with white linen table cloths. They make the breadsticks and house and while you have to pay for bread/breadsticks and butter it is beyond worth it, and they brought us extra breadsticks. The calamari was light and crispy with an amazing sauce. Enough to share for four. They have a ravioli and gnocchi of the day. Last night, the gnocchi had a rabbit Ragu however, she allowed us to change out the sauce and give us three options, including Gorgonzola cream, truffle cream, and a marinara sauce. The truffle cream sauce was decadent! Another in our group had brick chicken and loved it and lastly someone enjoyed the ahi tuna. They do not rush you. The wine list is amazing and affordable with many Italian options. I passed on dessert; one friend had affogato and they customized berries and whipped cream for a friend who avoids refined sugars. Enjoy!!

Yelp
We've been looking for other choices in Sacramento. If you are a fan of the Sopranos...this is your place! The food was good. Maybe a bit under seasoned. Service was attentive and friendly. If you are under 30...probably not the place for you. We are in our 50s and we felt young there. The pasta was fresh and delicious.

Yelp
Top 3 steaks of my life! I love this restaurant! The raviolo was amazing too, luckily my wife let me have some

Yelp
The service at Mattone was absolutely horrible from start to finish. They did not have the reservation when my wife's grandmother had called it in earlier that week. It took close to 30 minutes before we got to order drinks and get bread. We finally got our server's attention and gave our order which included appetizers, drinks, and our main courses. The drinks and appetizers took around 20 minutes from when we ordered. The main course took over an hour! I complained so the manager was sent and he gave a weak reason for the slow service by saying they had gotten backed up since the start of the evening. There were ways they could have made us more comfortable like bringing out the drinks and appetizers more timely or at the very least bread. The manager offered a free scoop of ice cream with chocolate sauce for my son as a consolation for our grievances. The desserts took over 15 minutes and they included a piece of cake for my birthday with a candle but at that point I didn't want any of it. Finally they screwed up the bill by charging us extra for a salad, ice cream, and for the birthday cake which we never even ordered. It was one of the worst restaurant service experiences I have ever had.

Yelp
Delicious home made pasta and sauces are the highlight here. The decor and atmosphere is a little sleepy, but the waitstaff were friendly and helpful. We started with the calamari which came out conspicuously quickly and was nothing special. However, when the pasta arrived it was clear it was made fresh and with love. The lasagna was a standout. It came in a huge portion and made with tender greed spinach-based noodles and a combination of rich meat ragu and béchamel.

Yelp
We've always loved the food in Mattone but last night was a miss. It was probably due to other large tables they had during the night, but the service for us smaller tables were lacking and pretty dismissive. They sat us around 6:45 PM and we had ordered our food by 7:00 PM. The appetizers came pretty quickly but our main course did not come until 8:25 PM... it was an hour wait in between courses and our waitress did not let us know ahead of time that it would be a LONG wait due to the large tables ahead of us. It wasn't until the very last moment that she told us and pretty much said "it is the way it is" in a very rushed nonchalant tone, not apologetic at all. The lobster pasta was not great either, the lobster was overcooked and the texture was more like tough chicken. It's just disappointing when you are the table that gets neglected.

Yelp
Mattone has been around for a few years since Biba's closed. The first year 2, it was amazing.. Ambiance, service and food were the best. We have dined here at least 10 times. Our last visit a few months ago was our last. Upon entering with a reservation on a weekday night (1/2 full restaurant) the hostess made us wait for a table. The owner was present and completly aloof to the operation. walking through the room and purposly not making eye contact with any guests... zero hospitality... My salad was so small it was a joke, and my daughter's salad was a full dinner plate hanging over the edge. her's was over dressed and my 8 leafs were very lightly dressed. The bread that they serve was day old... when I kindly asked if there was any fresh bread, I was told it is "fresh" and it just sits out all day. "so that is why it seems like it is 2 day old stale".... are you kidding me!!! The wine by the glass program is horrible, clearly written by a wine rep pushing his/her agenda. Don't even dare ask for a Pinot glass with that $20 wine. Banquet glasses work just fine.. Entrees were "Brick Chicken" which they are known for.. we have had it many times always great... This time it was barely hot, most likley pre cooked earlier in the day and poorly reheated.... The Petrale sole was ok, small portion and overcooked, but edible. The Steak bite appetizer $22 poorly trimmed meat scraps with a sauce...barely edible and maybe 3 OZ. Tiramasu for dessert...not bad... but not worth the $15. a frozen product can be better. After the meal we inquired about the Chef. Evidentally the founding chef had been gone for a while, sadly whoever is running the kitchen needs more training. I am so done with this restaurant... The best thing that the owner could do is sell it while it still has a heartbeat... before he goes out of business. So sad... Save your money.. you are better off buying a take home meal and a bottle of wine from Corti's across the street. Cheers!

Yelp
When we arrived at 6 for our reservation, I could hear the wait staff talking about how they were understaffed because an employee showed up for her shift a little late. We were seated and waited 30 minutes for a server to come ask if we needed drinks or were ready to place our order. It wasn't until we asked a busser if a server would be coming to our table which one finally did. The service was lacking in. The beginning but once we started ordering, it picked up. The food is mediocre. A little on the bland side and pricey for what you get. The menu is pretty limited for entrees. I'm not sure if I would come back, as there are other Italian restaurants are better suited for my taste.

Yelp
Fabulous!! We love John in the bar! We have followed him from Biba! Jun is so wonderful and genuine. We have followed this amazing person for years. He never disappoints. And truly cares. The food is authentic and plentiful. We are so fortunate this beautiful restaurant exists.

Yelp
We haven't been here in a little bit but always a pleasure. Made reservations for 5 which is when they open so no one was inside the main dinning room. June greeted us and the hostess sat us right away. We had our favorite waiter Jose. He does an amazing job and remembered that I drink Remy. The menu changed again since we were there. They now have daily specials in the fresh fish, the raviolis , and one more dish. Which is nice that they are changing every time you go there. June gave us a fish croquette appetizer on the house. He wanted us to try something different. It was very moist and flavorful and my wife and I really enjoyed it. So nice of him. My wife got the lasagna and I started off with the duck soup. It was like a vegetable soup with duck. very tasty but the micro greens got stuck in my teeth. I then had the duck for my main. It was medium and two good size pieces. It had small potatoes with some cherries which gave it a unique pop of flavor. I liked it but was stuffed and had to get a doggie bag. I wanted my favorite dessert so I saved some room for it. Zuccotto Fiorentino yummy. Always a great time here.

Yelp
Such a lovely evening at Mattone! First time visiting after hearing great things about it! The restaurant is very elegant on the inside- not over the top but just right ambiance with the white tablecloth that is well ironed and perfectly seamed. They offer a prixe fix menu $39 per person that includes their famous 12 layer lasagna! We decided to order a la carte and went for the Bread Basket to start (house made focaccia, and garlic breadsticks), friend calamari and the filet mignon steak bites. First and foremost, the focaccia was so light and fluffy and perfectly salted with a dash of oregon in the bread mix. I wish it came out warm, but either way it was sooooo fluffy and scrumptious with the olive oil and balsamic. The calamari-star of the show in terms of appetizers in my opinion. You have to order the calamari. It's super light, super crisp and very flavorful. They add paprika to the batter after and it does wonders to the flavor! It was like eating chips, so addicting and packed with flavor. It also comes with a spicy mayo dip that just balances the flavors. The steak bites- for the steak lovers out there, you need to order it to start. Incredibly flavorful, juicy, and bold flavors with a house made sauces and yukon potatoes. Now let's talk pasta- they are known for their iconic pastas, and ode to Biba (if you're from Sacramento then you should know of Biba). Hands down the best pasta i think i've had in Sacramento (despite not having gone to Biba myself). The 12 layer lasagna is iconic- it's light but incredibly filling and not too rich or overwhelming. This is the prize winner. I next time definitely plan to try their lobster pasta but i was in the mood for a creamy pasta and the Shrimp Pasta in the lemon cream sauce was TO DIE FOR. When the pasta is house made the right way, it is paper thin and light and not heavy but holds the sauce. Mattone knows what they are doing , they do not play when it comes to pasta! Incredible incredible incredible is what i must say. We also ordered to share the spinach pasta stuffed with ricotta in cream sauce. It was like eating pillows- (not that you should or I ever have nor recommend - it's just a joke). But it was so pillow like, fluffy, soft, and light. For dessert we decided on refreshing sorbet to cleanse the palate- the pineapple grapefruit sorbetto. All i will say is if you haven't gone, you're totally missing out. This place is a gem! Can't wait to go back again! Incredible service, incredible food and ambiance , well done Mattone. Michelin where you at?

Yelp
5:30 reservation on a Saturday evening. Good call because by the time we left every table was occupied Although I would consider it a special night out it appeared many customers were regulars from the neighborhood Service was excellent in every way. Staff extremely friendly and accommodating Now to the food. We started with the beet salad. Worth the split charge. The serving is ample for two. The polenta was perfect. I had a pasta and my husband ordered sea bass. He would choose another entree next time. There definitely will be a next time! A bit pricey but worth it. Don't forget to save room for dessert

Yelp
What a great evening enjoying the food and service at Mattone's Appys = calamari and arancini...both were yummy...4 entrees were all delightful: amazing ravioli, gnocchi, branzzino, and lobster ravioli!!! Our server was so fab to bring us glasses of wines to "try", didn't rush us in any way...was attentive and convergence we engaged him. Value of food/expense was refreshing and delicious!!

Yelp
My family wanted to try a different Italian restaurant than our normal ones closer to our home so we decided to venture out to Mattone Ristorante. The place is a good size with lots of table options along with a full size bar area. The staff was attentive and we never had our water or bread run out. Everything, I mean everything tasted fantastic from the bread to the main courses to dessert. The atmosphere was upscale and homely. One of my favorite restaurant in another city didn't make it through the pandemic and I was happy to have Mattone as a new option. We ordered Calamari Gnocchi del Giorno (Gnocchi of The Day) Spaghetti alla Carbonara with Eggs, Parmesan, Black Pepper, Smoked Pancetta & Olive Oil. Linguine with Lobster, Vodka, Roasted Tomato Cream Sauce Carré di Agnello alla Griglia was with Grilled Lamb Chops served with Cotechino, Umbrian Lentils with Vegetables & Tomatoes, Grilled Asparagus & a Lime-Capers-Butter-White Wine Reduction For dessert, we had the affogato, tiramisu, chocolate raspberry gelato, and strawberry-mango sorbet. Also, the bathrooms was also nice and fit for this level of the restaurant.

Yelp
Our first time at Mattone and was very pleased. We were celebrating our friends birthday plus a reunion as we hadn't seen each other for years. The 12 layer Lasagne was excellent, we made sure everyone had a taste. Two of our friends had the veal and enjoyed it. My husband had the lamb chops. We all had a bite of the veal and lamb chops. We shared the calamari and basket of bread. We were surprised that the bread wasn't included with our meal. Because we hadn't seen each other for years they didn't rush us out.

Yelp
This is our second time dining at Mattone. We started with the Caprese con Mozzarella. It was good. Then we shared the Insalata Mattone salad which was delicious. For my entree I had the Lobster Chitarra Chitarra Pasta, Lobster, Vodka Tomato Cream Sauce. Wow is all I can say. The dish was filled with lobster. It was amazing. My husband had Vitello con Funghi e Crema Veal Cutlets, Marsala Wild Mushroom Sauce, Saute Spinach, Mashed Potatoes. Everything was cooked to perfection. The restaurant is small and intimate. They have done a great job making you feel welcome and comfortable. I wish I would have captured pictures but I was too busy eating and enjoying the experience. Highly recommend this restaurant. Great work chef and team.

Yelp
Small restaurant with a separate bar area. Service was good, food was prepared fresh and had plenty flavor. A little pricey for what you get. More for a special night out vs every day dinning

Yelp
We looked forward to meeting another couple on Christmas Eve here. Initially we were seated in this tiny back room area & it was too claustrophobic, cold & non personable. Our close friends made sure that didn't happen so we got moved back to the main dining area. It's a good thing bc our server Cynthia was very helpful & polite yet unobtrusive. We couldn't have been happier with her. The main dining area was beautifully decorated with a holiday Christmas tree which we fabulously sat right next to! Woohoo! Cynthia didn't rush us as far as what we wanted to order. At first my wife and I were going to order a salad & share it but her Gemini mind changed & mentioned she had a salad for lunch. Instead we snacked on those cute original yet addicting bread sticks! Also included was a baguette & French bread in the bread basket. Unfortunately I didn't get to see what white wine our dear friend ordered but it came in a super cute bottle which she insisted on bringing home. Such great memorabilia from a fabulous restaurant. We were last here for wife's sister's retirement party & it was La Espanola back then in that tight cubby hole room. Seriously it was a small crowded area! That was over 10 years ago. Maybe 14 to be exact? Nevertheless it's changed over the years. Thank goodness! Our friends ordered the burrata con zuccha arronstita that looked delish. They shared among each other & raved about it. It looked fabulous! We were salivating as they scooped their cheese on top of a piece of French bread & added the balsamic dressing. YUM!!! I love squash & figs! Why didn't we order that? LOLOLOL I had ordered the braised in red wine shortrib which came boneless with broccolini & polenta. My shortrib was so tender & succulent. My wife had the grilled Ora king salmon married with yam purée & salsify that reminded her of a white radish. It was excellent. That lime gastrique sauce on top of the salmon made for the perfect IG picture. It was subtle in taste. Prepared so much better than another fine dining establishment that also does Ora king salmon. Our friends also had the shortrib & spaghetti which looked incredible. They were very happy with their entrees & planned on returning. It's obvious this business has a following bc our waitress said she saw another couple just last week. I know we were so fortunate to get Mattone's last reservation for Christmas Eve as it was hopping that evening! Seriously! Our friends ordered the tiramisu. This dessert was humongous & TDF! Oh my goodness! We were so blessed as they shared as our experienced waitress brought out four forks initially!!! It was absolutely the best one my wife ever had. That says a lot coming from her bc her work friend is a pastry chef. This tiramisu was so divine and huge it ended up being breakfast with coffee for our friends. My wife wanted so badly to come over & watch football with them! We couldn't have been happier with our meals & customer service! I'm sure we will return! We want to try more entrees, appetizers, and have different dessert. That rum pound cake is calling my wife! Hahaha. See you soon Mattone!

Yelp
When my Yelp buds asked me to join them for dinner, the restaurant of choice was Mattones. Hmm, I never been. When I drove there.... a light bulb hit. It's the location where the Espanol Italian restaurant was before. But folks, Mattone is owned by a different owner and has a whole new look inside. Plus OMG, the food is a foodie lovers dream. Very refined with distinct flavors. Gorgeous presentation. I ordered the braised lamb shank $38. Delicious! The sauce was so darn good. Flavorful, the kind of flavor you get with hours of simmering the shank to get the rich marrow taste. The shank was tender and cooked to pull off the bone fork shreddable. It's served with root vegetables and a slice of crispy fried polenta. Surprisingly I enjoyed the flavors of the root vegetables, wished the serving size was a bit larger though. The complimentary bread basket consisted of breadsticks and fresh sliced bread served with butter. Those breadsticks are house made; thin, sturdy, crisp and tasting cheesy. Mmm mmm. TIPS: PARKING-They have a parking lot which fills up pretty quickly. It's one way in and out, so a 3 point (maybe more) maneuver is needed to get out when it's full. However the hostess told me that when the next door tire shop closes for the day, Mattones patrons can park in their lot. Also parking in the residential side street is allowed. RESTROOM-They have two, labeled "Signore" Sir and "Signora" Lady. But they are genderless as the wait staff told me and first come. There are no stalls, just one toilet and wash basin in each.

Yelp
So, went to Mattone for New Years Eve on their Prix Fixe menu. I chose the Meatballs (2) tough and tasteless, could have been previously frozen. My second choice was the Lobster Bisque, the lobster was so minuscule, and the flavor and presentation looked similar to gravy. I also tried the Arugula salad, almost choked on the long Arugula stems! My main entree was the Scallops, I was blessed with 3 Scallops and a side of Bitter tasting broccoli. The lasagna I tried off another plate was probably the best dish because of the thin pasta, still a little on the salty side, however, it was mushy and cold. The dessert I picked was the Creme Brûlée, it was okay. The lemon cheesecake was the winner of the evening, it was tasty. The wait time between dishes being served was long. Our water glasses remained empty. Our table had brought 2 bottles of wine and a Champagne bottle. The server charged us double the price to open the larger bottles And we had to wait 30 minutes for Champagne glasses because they were being washed. It's New Years Eve and you have No champagne glasses available?! The food was salty, and not worth the $300.00 per person as our table split the bill. Honestly, I felt robbed. The service and the food was not what I had anticipated or hoped for.

Yelp
Came to celebrate NYE 2024 with my wife. Mattone was offering a 4 course dining experience where you have a choice in each category for $95. I thought for the service and quality of food, it was well worth it. The restaurant also had live entertainment which was a great accompaniment to the meal. The lobster bisque and the filet mignon were the highlights of my meal.

Yelp
Mattones is one of my very favorite restaurants and the only place I will ever eat lasagna. The service is fabulous and the wine list is extensive and the food is just really really good.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for hand made pasta and was invited to dinner at Mattone. The drinks were delicious. From the spritz, to the wine, and to the limoncello, I was impressed. The service was attentive The Antipasti was drool worthy The salad with goat cheese dressing was my favorite part of the meal The pasta...was meh. I ordered the Carbonara and was not amazed. Obo's was better. The crème Brule made up for the pasta.

Yelp
Wow! You definitely need reservations to eat here. For a Wednesday night, this spot was packed! Parking was full so we had to park in the residential area. Loved all the Christmas decor inside! We all enjoyed the complimentary bread and breadsticks. I ordered the lasagne Al ragu di carne ($25). It looked a little burnt but I was pleasantly surprised on how good it tasted. I also had some of my friends dishes which were delightful as well. They had the gnocchi del giorno ($24) and beet tagliolini ($25). The menu is always changing so would love to come back to try more! The dessert looks amazing as well :)

Yelp
First time at Mattone Ristorante! I'm glad a friend made reservation and selected this fine Italian restaurant located on Folsom Blvd (across the street from Corti Brothers) for the holiday gathering. Parking is limited and may have to look for street parking on the residential streets, but not too bad. The restaurant is bigger than I thought and it was packed on a Wednesday night. Soft lighting, nice ambience and a lively crowd.  I had the Brasato di Agnello, braised lamb shank served with white polenta, celery root & savoy cabbage. The lamb was tender, juicy and flavorful. The polenta is soft and creamy. I wish there was a little more cabbage as it complimented the lamb very well. This entrée was amazing and I was very satisfied. Of course, I had to have a glass of chianti to complete this very fine Italian meal. The others had veal, chicken, lasagne and gnocchi. I had a small bite of the beet fettuccine in a cream sauce and it was delicious. The wine list is very nice too. I heard the chocolate cake is amazing, but we had other plans for desserts, so will take a raincheck on that. Our waitress was funny, very Italian and friendly. I would definitely come back to try other dishes.

Yelp
I love their menu! Not your average American Italian selection. You'll find items like carpaccio, homemade gnocchi, veal and halibut on the menu. I always find something new to try when I come here. I'd say the attire recommended is smart casual. Dim lighting, great bar area, and upscale vibes without all the fluff.

Yelp
Ordered take out food for dinner tonight and the results were mixed. We ordered the dinner for 2 for $45, so expectations weren't the highest, but I was very excited to try everything. 1) Gorgonzola salad: romaine lettuce, toasted one nuts, and a gorgonzola dressing. The pine nuts had a mild flavor which was pleasant given how often they go rancid by the time we eat them. The dressing was easy too strong. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, but definitely was too strong. 2) soup if the day: we weren't told what the soup was, but it was very bland. 3) Garganelli pasta: STRONG saffron flavor. So strong I couldn't taste the parmesan. Also saffron and Cabbage wasn't my favorite combination. 4) Half chicken: delicious! I wish the skin was crispier but it was delicious. The rotate veggies were a little too soft for me but very well seasoned. We also ordered a cappuccino cheesecake which was DEVINE! It was so amazing we were taking about going back and getting more the minute we finished the slice. Seriously amazing.

Yelp
I've been here twice and had a great experience both times. Food and service were both excellent. Prices are on the higher side, but to be expected for the quality. Great place to go for special occasions.

Yelp
We had dinner here on Christmas Eve before a show and the food was incredible, was really impressed with the veal piccata, the gnocchi, salad Mattone and the creme brûlée...basically everything we ordered. Francisco was a gem and made our experience over the top perfect. Thank you! Excited to come back and try more of your amazing dishes!

Yelp
Cute quaint neighborhood Italian restaurant. Nicely decorated and front of the house very kind and efficient. Unfortunately things drastically decline from there. Food was good however 3 hours from reservation to end of night for dinner is excessive and shows lack of coordination in the back of the house with the chef. Wait staff was kind however if knowing between each course would take an hour; come back and check on the table and share expectations. Everything ordered was good for the exception of their "well known 12 layer lasagna". The lasagna came out stone cold and mushy. The entree had been sitting at the pass while awaiting the chefs to finish the other 9 orders for a table top of 10. We were hesitant in ordering dessert for fear it would take another hour. Wait staff did remove the lasagna entree and a few desserts as we inquired how long it would take to get dessert as everything else took an hour between courses. Sadly we will not go back as service and cooking coordination was very poor. I watched a table top of 2 being turned over 2x before our table had received their entrees. Good luck in the future and hope the feedback assists in future operations.

Yelp
We were huge fans of Biba's and were really excited when Mattone opened! I've been quite a few times but most recently went with my husband, parents, and our almost 2 year old. We made a reservation for 5:30pm on a Sunday - it wasn't super busy and there were plenty of parking spaces when we arrived. When they brought us to our table they immediately asked if we wanted a high chair to which we said yes, until our son decided he wanted to sit in a normal chair. They then offered a booster seat and brought that over and set it up. We tried to get him to sit in it, but he refused and they didn't mind at all. The waitress came around for us to order drinks and we ordered bread and some spaghetti with butter for our son which came out in less than 5 minutes! After a bit the rest of of us ordered our entrees - the shrimp ravioli special for 2, and the lasagna for the 2 others. I feel like all the food is great, but if you've never been before, I would highly recommend the lasagna or at least make sure someone at the table gets it. It's made with so many thin layers and it just melts in your mouth! The service is fantastic - they were so kind and offered everything to make it easy for us with our son. He threw 2 pieces of pasta on the ground which I was going to pick up and someone came and picked it up before I could even get to it. I apologized and they said they didn't mind at all. If you're going somewhere for the ambiance this likely isn't the place. The dining room is a large room with many tables, eggshell colored walls, and not a ton of decor. It feels like you're in a restaurant that has been there for 50+ years and hasn't updated much.

Yelp
If you are a foodie, this is the place. The owner June, a fixture in the Sac food scene, for decades has brought together the best team from Biba's. The restaurant is upscale, very comfortable, excellent service. The food is excellent and reasonably priced. We had the Veal Saltimbocca and the Lamb plate. The sauces were perfect. Great bar, plenty of fre parking. Our new favorite.

Yelp
We always enjoy dinner there! The food is always excellent and the service is fabulous! The pastas are still house-made and remind us of those that Biba herself used to make!

Yelp
What a wonderful experience here. The old world Italian menu with elevated service was great. Ambiance is a bit dated, but it added to the charm. Would return for sure!

Yelp
I still love Mattone, but this is specifically about a large group. I had 12 people for a birthday dinner. I was not told that they could not split the check, nor was a told about the gratuity they automatically add to the bill. This place is NOT accommodating when it comes to big parties. The fact that they couldn't break the checks down at all, when we were spending so much money there (Check came out to almost $900) was absurd to me. With technology, it's easier and easier to do this also, not disclosing the automatic gratuity is deceiving. They tacked on $120 which was 15% of the bill. Had they not done that and the bill hadn't been so freaking confusing and inconvenient for US to split at the end of a very expensive birthday meal, I can guarantee we would have given much more than 15%. The end of the meal was rushed and confusing and definitely not how I wanted us to finish the evening. Also, I cannot believe they charge for bread! I was so annoyed about the bill, that I honestly barely looked at it, but they OFFERED bread for the table, then charged us for it. I was not happy about that.

Yelp
We tried Mattone for the first time with some out of town relatives, one an Italian who grew up with homemade pasta and the works. We loved the ambience, our server Gigi, the salads and dessert. The one huge fail for us was the lasagna, which TASTED amazing yet was extremely mushy. This was shocking from a fabled Italian restaurant. We had a special dinner and didn't mind the cost. But I had hoped for 5 stars, flawless, instead of special and appreciated, 4 stars. I offer this review because I want to support our local restaurants and providing feedback out of honesty and no ill intentions is being an honest customer.

Yelp
We came back again because it was so good the first time. We got the carbonara and ravioli both times but they change the ravioli every day (I think..) so it is always fun to see what they have and I'm looking forward to coming back and trying more.
