The Best Affordable Restaurants In Seattle | Eater Seattle

"These chili dogs are simple creatures — a basic dog on a basic bun slathered with a decidedly un-elevated chili that is meaty, smooth, with only a little bit of heat. It’s not quite a snack, not quite a full meal, but maybe most importantly it is still $6, as if inflation has left this industrial corner of Georgetown largely untouched. Matt’s serves other styles of hot dogs too, including a Seattle dog of course, all around the same low low price point." - Meg van Huygen

8 Hedonistic Hot Dogs to Try in Seattle

"This counter at the industrial end of Georgetown has been slinging dogs since 1992 and is unpretentious as they come. Even in these inflationary times, a chili dog here is still $5, and for that you get onions and mustard covered with a smooth, nourishing chili. Honestly you might need to get more than one, just to be safe." - Harry Cheadle, Eater Staff

A hidden gem! Matt’s Hot Dogs have been around since 1992. Matt’s is located a converted home, tucked away in the more industrial part of the Georgetown neighborhood. Matt’s serves up hot dogs, hamburgers and fries. They are closed on the weekends, and open 10am - 8pm Monday through Friday. We found the prices to be reasonable and the variety great. I definitely appreciate a place that keeps the menu simple, but does really good food. The hubby has the double cheeseburger and the “Fire Dog” (Spicy Polish). I had the Seattle Dog and the Chicago Dog. We also had an order of the chili cheese fries. I tried the polish - I liked the spice level, but was not a fan of the softer texture. I really loved the snap of the beef hot dogs - which are Matt’s own recipe. The chili cheese fries were amazing! They had a nostalgic flavor that I can’t put my finger on. They have some bench seating under an awning, but no indoor seating. The service was quick and the staff super friendly. We will be back for sure!

Google
This place rocks. Fast and friendly workers. Simple menu, everything except the drinks worth the price. Got the chili and Seattle dogs. Chili was maybe a little too greasy for my liking but it had the flavor, the Seattle had the cream cheese, fries were just like McDonald’s super cheap and tasty. Both dogs had a nice snap and I’m looking forward to trying the burgers

Google
Matt's is a burger and hot dog place right across from Katsu Burger on Marginal Way S. It's easy to get to and has a good sized parking lot outside. No tables inside as it's more of a counter to order, but they have a closed in area outside to eat which seats over a dozen people. Their menu isn't that big, but prices are great for the portion sizes and the flavors are fantastic. They keep it simple and that's what makes it great. The hot dogs have a snap to them and the burgers are juicy. The staff is awesome, including the owner Matt who is really funny and a blast to talk to. Overall this is a solid lunch spot and can get rushes from all the industrial places around, but food comes out quick to order.

Google
Great hot dogs and fresh fries at good prices. Had the spicy polish dog and it was spot on. Fries were crisp and the dog/ingredients flavorful. Very friendly staff, they have hand sanitizer dispensers annd there is an outdoor sitting area if you prefer to dine in.

This is a slice of America that must be protected at all costs. If you love Seattle, appreciate hard-workin folks, and crave the kind of classic comfort food that feels like home, Matt’s Chili Dogs is where you need to be. The dogs? Perfection. The cheeseburgers? A masterclass in simplicity. But it’s more than the food—it’s the heart of the place. You can feel the soul of a community that still values grit, flavor, and timeless food at a fair price. So come here. Come often. Bring friends. Because places like this don’t just serve food, they serve memories. And if we want to keep a little piece of Americana alive in Seattle, we owe it to ourselves to support Matt’s Chili Dogs!!

Google
These really hit the spot. The chili dog is pretty much perfect, with a good snap that compliments the savory chili and soft bun. The Chicago dog is just like what you want and expect. And the fries are crispy and salted just right. Simple and satisfying.

Emily

Google
The food was sad. The fries would have been good if they had half the salt. The chilli fries tasted like Hormel chilli and unmelted shredded cheese. The service was nice and reminded me of a Chicago hole in the wall.

I wish some businesses would realize how a smile can go a long way. I was greeted with one, points there, then after I placed my order there was a guy that was at the standing table that just finished his meal, turned and shouted "Thanks Matt! See you next week!". That right there for some reason just made me smile 😃 Ok, I got a Chicago Dog and the chili fries. I was like this much $$ for hot dog and fries?? Andd I had to pour my chili and sprinkle my cheese on top of the fries myself???....this don't even look like enough. After taking a few bites, I was like ohhh ok, let me shut my mouth and continue eating Lol 😆 You know when you eat something and it keeps tasting better while you eat it? Yeaaa that was this. So I sat on the bench outside, which was covered by a see-through tent.... in the cold and rain of course and enjoyed 1/3 of my meal (it was too cold for me out there). If I had friends in Seattle, this would definitely be a spot where I would enjoy some hot dogs/burgers and fries with them.

Yelp
Great food, service, music, and fun! Experience a classic old time hot dog stand with all of the fixings! But not just simply dogs; enjoy burgers, fries, and great shakes (I suggest Chocolate/Strawberry)... https://youtube.com/shorts/O1ekWOE8aag?feature=share

Yelp
Seattle Dog 4/5 overall. Bun 4/5. Dog 5/5. Toppings 4/5. Size and value 3/5. Fantastic hot dog from the world famous spot, Matt's! Soft steamed bun, delicious with a great snap to it, all about that snap! Best dog I have ever had no doubt. Cream cheese and onions well portioned and added nicely to the flavor and texture. Everyone needs to try a Matt's dog!

Yelp
Burger patty taste like quality beef. It was lightly seasoned and the veggies added a lovely freshness. The hotdogs hit the spot. The amount of fries you get with the chili cheese fries is sad. Overall, price is fair and they have plenty parking in the front along with outside eating area. Great local burger/ hot dog joint.

Dana P.

Yelp
Very nice man... although the slaw dog was awful. First it tasted as though the hotdog sat in water no flavor. The slaw was an enormous amount of dressing in it no flavor The chili came out of a can and the bun was bought from Walmart. The chili cheese fries was McDonalds fries with canned chili on it. Sorry to say but for 20.00 bucks I'm not impressed

Yelp
Honestly a Georgetown icon. I come here for lunch whenever I'm in the area for work, they're super fast and convenient--and their sausages are house made! Even for takeout, everything gets packaged really well. But, if it's a nice day, there's a shaded patio and benches outside. Whenever I want to recommend out-of-towners to the Seattle dog, I take them here, and it always receives rave reviews!

Yelp
A couple of months ago, I made chili at home based purely on vibes in that I assumed that throwing ground beef with spices, aromatics, some tomatoes, beans, and stock would result in some kind of chili. On paper, this is probably true. In execution, I made unexceptional chili that was rather flavorless and overall disappointing and not representative of my self-determined culinary ability. Eating a chili dog at my famous chili dogs gave me a glimpse at an alternate reality where my love for hot dogs and my inability to make a good chili manifested in a physical establishment. I was not a fan of my chili dog because I couldn't distinguish the chili from the dog and it reminded me painfully of my own mediocrity. That said, my chicago dog was excellent and very much a faithful representation of my history with chicago dogs. So overall, I nailed it where it mattered. The dogs are really the highlight of my famous chili dogs while the chili leaves much to be desired. I would definitely come back again to eat my non-chili dogs and try one of my unmentioned burgers. Thanks, me!

Yelp
After 6 years of procrastination I finally visited Matt's Famous Chili Dogs. Nice place signage's very noticeable, parking lot clean, eating area clean. I normally focus on the main items but I side tracked and ordered chili fries. Matt was on the counter and he was a nice guy, engaging with customers. I ordered a Polish Sausage, Seattle Style, great flavor, heated bun. And the Chili Fries delivered the flavor as well. The Polish may have been steamed but it still delivered. I need to take a second run to request one with a little char on it. Over all this institution has been around since 1992 and requires a visit.

The BEST Frankfurter ( That's Their REAL Name ) On The Entire Western United States . Absolutely Delicious, New York , Chicago, Seattle, Chili You Name It

Yelp
I am a bit of a hotdog snob, but Matt's are really quite good. Absolutely up there with the best dogs I've found in Seattle. (I still believe there are no 5-star hot dog joints in this city, so 4 is high praise.) While a lover of dogs, the chili version has never been my favorite, but it's in the name for godsakes so obviously I had to try one. Luckily I was a hungry boy and also had room to order a Chicago dog, hold the relish. Also fries. The dogs are muy bueno - a massive green flag is the natural casing, and telltale snap that comes with it. This is how a dog should feel and sound when bitten into. I do wish they were spiced a bit more, but they're quite tasty. The chili I found underwhelming...don't get me wrong, it was good, I downed it fast and licked my fingers afterward, it was just a little generic, and I would trade a bit of sweetness for a few more dashes of seasoning if I could have it my way. The Chicago dog was money. My only qualm is that it just had one sport pepper...easy fix, I'll order extra next time. The buns were steamed soft, not toasted, as they should be. I prefer a poppy bun myself but that's a matter of much debate and I won't force my views on the world. I found the fries, despite claims on the menu, not to be worthy of a marriage proposal. They were decent, but not amazing, and I just couldn't see myself spending the rest of my life with them. All in all, Matt is running a damn fine hot dog joint, and you won't go wrong here for lunch.
google avatar

Joe T.

Yelp
Love me some chili dogs. Really good dogs with natural casings that snap and that kind of paste like chili that I wouldn't want to have a bowl of but goes perfect with a dog.

Yelp
What a beautiful day 12June 2024..well everyday is a beautiful day when your above ground it was 2:30pm sunny and bright but First I like to apologize to the community I made a few incorrect statement about Matt's about Disable accessibility to the establishment. "I was Wrong"! But today I had Chinese food on the brain but those questions kept picking my thoughts so I had excuse! So instead I went to Matt's my 2nd time I wanted to try the "Double cheese burger and fries". The size was normal more Bun than meat and the Fries..A regular (which they should change to small) but presentation was nice. So I started with the fries because a kool breeze was brewing sitting in the panic area and I didn't want them to get hard..then I began to alternate a bite of burger jam some fries but as I knew it the fries began to get hard(done) and I really didn't notice it because the fries had ketchup for taste the Double cheese had NO season on it? I wouldn't give it a thumb down..I'll give it a sideways thumb and a smile. Flavor is one of important things that keep ME coming BACK!
google avatar

Yelp
Really friendly service, and of course you have to try the chili dog here. It's got almost a cafeteria style to it that brings back nostalgia, but at a high quality twist. I ended up getting the chili + slaw - both chili and slaw have that cafeteria quality, where the chili is more a stew of ground meat with a mild amount of spice, and the slaw is your standard fare. The dog itself had a perfect bite and natural casing, although the size could be bigger. Steamed buns, also reminded me of old school style. To top it off, I also got a chocolate shake which was deliciously malty.
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
Nice hot dogs, I enjoyed the chili dog and the chili fries. Service was quick and fast-with the ambiance being pretty relaxed for a dive place to get your food to go.
google avatar

Yelp
I used to go here all the time for the best Chicago dogs in town but they have really gone hill. I hadn't been in a couple of years so was super excited but that excitement soon turned to disappointment when I bit into the dog. It was just ok, thrown together messily and the buns are not the same and over streamed. The dog seemed similar to the past but the whole thing was just eh.. I am super bummed that this once amazing stand has gone hill so much that I won't return.

Mike P.

Yelp
When I am in the end of town I drop by Matt's when I can. Fast, friendly service. I usually get a Fire Dog (Spicy Polish) or two. Very tasty and satisfying. What they do, they do very well. For a while they had a very nice Italian sausage sandwich, but that appears to have been dropped off the menu. I can understand it, but dang! I still miss it! Been going there since shortly after I moved to Seattle in 1992, and have always enjoyed having a quick chat with Matt. Interacting with him and his staff has always been a good experience for me.
google avatar

Michelle D.

Yelp
My office in Georgetown orders from Matt's more than we may want to admit. It's definitely a favorite. I like that there is something for everyone. I can get my slaw dog with no bun and still feel like I had enough to eat and that it was good. Some of us can get the veggie dog with their dog of choice. My other favorite is the Chicago dog. Everything is always tasty. It is always quick (we pick up), and if you're feeling something extra their fries or a burger are also fan faves. Nice people, good product, local shop. All around a winner that you should try if you're in the area.
google avatar

Ehtesh C.

Yelp
Great hot dogs at a great price. Though a little on the small side. Just wish they had better seating options that were indoors. This is more of a takeout spot.
google avatar

River S.

Yelp
Great dogs. Nice selection. Perfect for a quick bite to eat in Georgetown. Closed on the weekends.

Marissa M.

Yelp
Quick bite before getting to the airport and it was great, first timer but will be back! Glad we decided to stop.

Yelp
Matt's is probably the best food I've ever seen let alone had. When we started introducing solid foods into my baby's diet, it only made sense to go with Matt's entire menu, mainly the chili, the dogs, the buns, and pretty much everything else on the menu to be specific. My family considers Matt's to be a home away from home due to their classic style, service, ambiance, and good looks across the board. The staff is exceptional, they know me by name. Matt's is an absolute staple of the community. I have been to several work events catered by Matt's and it's always incredible. You have to try Matt's Classic Chicago Dog... I'm not messing around here you have to. BEST DOGS SINCE 1992 BABY.
google avatar

Yelp
Skip the burgers--you go here for the dogs! This is the closest thing you'll find to a real hot dog-like those found in New York, New Jersey, Detroit (coney dogs!). Unlike hot dogs in Seattle which seem to all be some kind of sausage on a French roll (too much bread) these are all beef dogs that extend beyond the bun with a great "snap" The chili dog is the closest you'll find to a Detroit-style coney dog. A no beans meat sauce with mustard and onions. The New York dog has sauerkraut, red onion sauce-just like those found on the streets of New York. The Chicago Dog is dragged through the garden and comes with a kosher dill pickle, tomato, onion, sweet relish, sport pepper and celery salt. There are many more including a "Seattle Dog" with cream cheese if you must. Also burgers, fries, and shakes. Owner Matt is friendly and can usually be found behind the counter.
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
You can get a chili dog in a lot of places. This is the only place where I have had a truly great chili cheese dog! I don't live anywhere near there's place, but heard so many good things I had to try it out. I tried the chili cheese, dog, chili, cheese, fries, and Polish dog. They were all exceptional. Lots of choices and they all look amazing. Matt is friendly and entertaining if you get a chance to stop in. It is definitely worth the trip for an authentic chili cheese dog.
google avatar

Yelp
Matt's Famous Chili Dogs has been a fixture of the Seattle Duwamish area since 1992. And has been consistent still. Although there is not a large menu to select from, all the items are just so good. The dogs are delicious and of good quality. But the burgers truly stand out. Simply made with all fresh ingredients. Thick sliced onion and tomato. Fresh slice lettuce. Tasty mayo and or mustard. Never any leftovers from a prior day. And yes. Double meat patties. All for affordable prices. Drinks (with refills) and freshly made shakes. Also, for affordable prices. In fact, just plain good, yummy food for dirt cheap. I don't know anybody in this city that has been doing dogs & burgers for this long and for the prices Matt's has. Can you? Now, as far as "ambiance" or "atmosphere" settings goes. Just plain white painted wooden bench seating outside. Just tootle on down there and check it out. Order up, sit down and enjoy the Marginal Way Industrial Zone scenery. Working class folks doing the things that make this city tic. Just like Matt's Famous Chili Dogs.
google avatar

Yelp
Eh, have to reduce this by two stars. The service (as always) is great, but when I asked for cheese to be added to a hot dog I almost passed out when I saw I was charged $1.39. Should it be free? Absolutely not, but $1.39 to throw some shredded cheese on top of a hot dog? That is absolutely outrageous. Second, I decided to order fries this time and received rock hard, ice cold fries, so much so I thought my tooth was going to chip. I crunched on two or three fries then tossed the rest in the garbage. The final insult was the horrific chocolate shake I ordered, which was made of some kind of iced white confection mixed with chocolate syrup. Ew. I took one sip and thought it tasted like frozen generic chocolate milk. Disgusting. In the trash that went as well. Matt has some tasty dogs and I'll return for those, but that's about it. I'm just glad I didn't order the chili cheese fries or else I probably would have dropped it another star. Chili and cheese on fries but not on a hot dog? Once again, great service but what a disappointment.

Yelp
The place is just as a remember it as a kid hood dogs for cheap I got a chili and Chicago and was not disappointed Chicago DogMatt's Classic Chicago Dog

Yelp
Carry out Hot dog joint been in Seattle for a long ass time. If you're a fan of the tube steak and you are at the south edge of the city, then Matt's is your go to. Great for lunch too. Never actually tried his burgers cuz I go to Matt's for the dogs. Quality is there and everything else is no frills...

Lgendary D.

Yelp
Awesome food awesome owner Awesome service. Excellent burgers. Excellent dogs. Excellent shakes.

Yelp
I love this place, fast service and the workers are always kind. Good, fairly priced food, don't even get me started on the double cheeseburger or the polish sausage.... Soooo delicious. I definitely recommend visiting this spot, it's fairly small but has an outdoor seating area right next to it, very chill environment.
google avatar

Holly M.

Yelp
If you want an affordable lunch in Georgetown this is the place to go! Perfect for a burger for sure. They have crispy french fries that are wonderful! Did I mention the employees are so nice?! This is a place to grab your meal and go or sit outside. I've only ate the hamburger and fries here but they are known for their hot dogs and sausages. People rave about them but I'm not much of a dog eater. I've also used them for catering lunches for my work. When you have 100 grown hard working men Matt's will come through for you! Great business in Seattle!
google avatar

Sam A.

Yelp
Classic simple menu and food. Nice outdoor eating area. Convenient location. Matt served us!
google avatar

Regina P.

Yelp
I literally cannot get enough of this place. The chili dogs are to die for. There is never a moment for me that I do not want a chili dog from Matt's. I've lived in Seattle for about 8 years and I'm truly disappointed that I did not find out about this place until a couple years ago. The service is incredible... the dogs AMAZING...the fries perfect *chef kiss* If you haven't been here before you are missing out.
google avatar

Ellen C.

Yelp
Was really excited to try this place because of the ratings and reviews, however the food was average and left me wanting. Ordered the chili dog, double chili burger, chili cheese fries, a southern dog, and a strawberry shake. The chili was mediocre and was missing that wow factor. The hot dogs also tasted very average. The combo of the 2 reminded me of a chili dog I'd get at a high school football game. The shake also tasted superficial. To compare, the hot dogs at Costco are better and the shakes at Shake Shack beat this place out of the park. I give it 3 stars though because it's a local business and the owner obviously takes pride in his shop since he gets to know his customers. Also packaging of the food is meticulous and done with care. I like how he injects humor in the business and tries to make this place fun to eat at. I probably won't come back here.
google avatar

Randy P.

Yelp
The Chicago dog is very satisfying as is the chili dogs and French fries! The shakes are very delicious and a perfect fry dipper if you live like an animal!! Great prices and are a must quick stop fight off the highway. No warning of after explosions the chili is high quality!!!!!

Earle D.

Yelp
I grew up on and love chili dogs. Matts is quite good and the only thing that kept it from 5 stars was a personal choice. I prefer chicken and pork dogs, but can appreciate that many prefer all beef dogs. The chili is solid and the steamed bun was on point. Overall it's a very good chili dog. The he fries were just ok but I went for the dogs.
google avatar

Claudine R.

Yelp
I love this place. It's so hard to find a good hot dog with the right snap and also full of flavor and they do it right. It's a small location in a industrial area but it's worth the drive. It's never a long wait as they move quickly. I always get the kraut dog but have had the Chicago and chili and they are all really good. This is a must if you love hot dogs

Virginia P.

Yelp
Very good!!! Small place. Clean. No seating. Workers were very nice. Food was excellent!
google avatar

Philippe M.

Yelp
Hot Dogs and Chili Dogs are always top grade. Shoestring fries are typically solid, except this time were WAY too salty. Matt makes a solid hamburger and cheeseburger too. Wish he was open on weekends.
google avatar

Billie B.

Yelp
The service was exceptional. The girl who waited on us was super nice and friendly. We had a chili dog, double cheese burger, fries and a chocolate shake. $30 bucks. We took our bag of food and went to a park to enjoy what we had hoped was an excellent meal. What a disappointment when we opened the bag and saw a chili dog that was slopped in a tinfoil wrapper with no paper between it and the bun which had very obviously been microwaved. It was soggy in the middle and hard on the ends and the dog? Didn't touch either end of the bun just sat in the middle. Tiny little thing. The burger could only be described as a happy meal burger with a double patty. The fries were good and the shake was good along with the great customer service we received from the cashier is why I gave this 3 stars. But the food was very lacking.
google avatar

Julie F.

Yelp
I love the fact that there is a vegetarian option here. A vegetarian option. That's actually really good. I love Chicago style hotdogs. They have always been my absolute favorite and Matt's does them perfectly! Their fries are also really crisp. Great people great food you can't go wrong!

Yelp
I was making a delivery in Seattle down on River st. The truck dog wasn't feeling good so had to clean up a couple messes which had me feeling bad he was sick... got to my second delivery, low and behold. Matt's Famous Chili Dog and Hamburger.... I had to go... walked my dog then locked him up and went over there... menu is small but perfect for the place... the gentleman that assisted me was nice and courteous .... I chose to eat a Chili Dog and a New York Dog... the New York Dog had Sauerkraut with a sweet sauce on it... it was good.... they put a good amount of kraut on it and the flavor was one of a kind... their chili dog tho was phenomenal... there wasn't alit of burger in the chili but the flavor was on point... the buns were warm.. the dog didn't have a lot of girth to it but it was longer than the buns so that was a bonus... I am satisfied.. this place is great... I'm on the Search now for other chili dog joints to compare.

Yelp
Loved it! Tasty chili dogs, buns were fresh and plentiful condiments you dress yourself

Yelp
Been here a couple times just wanted to shout out Matt for great service and amazing chili . Worth the 45 minute drive from lynnwood .

Anna Z.

Yelp
Simple quick bites! I would come back. Fries were good and the hotdogs were pretty decent-- my husband said the owner was super friendly and all smiles-- we would come back to support the biz!
google avatar

Yelp
I wasn't a person to stops for hotdogs, but I am now! Chili dog was 10/10. Polish was 20/10. Incredibly good food!
google avatar

Julian G.

Yelp
Here's my TLDR Review- Double Cheese Burger: Pretty on par with Quick Pick Chili Cheese Fries: Think of Cincinnati style chili, but thicker, and without the cinnamon. This was the star of the show. If you go here I would make it a priority of getting something with chili on it. Or what I'll most likely do, is get the chili on the side and dip my food into it. It's so thick that it will stick to anything you put in it (-yes this is a good thing.
google avatar

Rick L.

Yelp
Good food, one of my local favorite chili cheese dog destinations. Matt's has gotten a bit expensive. Don't go for the ambiance, but for the good dogs.
google avatar

Tracy A.

Yelp
I believe this kind of place and food are subjective to each individual and your preferences and your experiences. For me, I loved Matt's. I love the nostalgia of the place. It's vintage, and vintage never gets old! The chili sauce is the same I grew up with, so I loved it! The beef hot dog pops when you bite into it. I love the way he puts the mustard and onion on the dog first because the thick sauce goes on top and holds it all in place. Matt has a variety of dogs to choose from, but it's going to be hard for me to get away from the chili dog. Quality ingredients and courteous service. You just have to get there on a week day. Not open weekends.
google avatar

Tiffany J.

Yelp
Love Matt's! Anytime I'm in the area I have to stop by and get the best dogs! My favorite is the Chicago dog, but all of them are good! I've tried the New York Dog as well as the Chili dog. I recommend them all! Such a nice local business to support! And the cool part is you can get a punch card that'll lead your way up to a free dog!

Yelp
Matt's far exceeded my expectations when I was hit with a sudden chili dog craving a few weeks ago! After several disappointing attempts at other hot dog spots, T and I made the journey to Matt's given the yummy-looking photos and positive reviews we saw on Yelp. Love the range of dogs on the menu, the quick and friendly service and the quality of the food (especially given the price point). We couldn't just have one so we went with a chili cheese dog (chili dog that we added shredded cheddar to), a slaw dog (chili dog with slaw), a NY dog (red onion sauce plus mustard and kraut) and a late night dog (Matt's version of a Seattle dog with cream cheese and onions). All were great, though the NY dog was my favorite, probably because since moving here from NYC I've yet to find a Ny style dog. Also got the cheese fries which were served piping hot with a generous amount of melty cheese. Yum! Got a chance to also chat with Matt while eating which was fun to hear about the history of the place. Will be back the next time a craving hits!
