Burgers by Sam the Cooking Guy Coming to the Little Italy Food Hall | Eater San Diego

"Starting as a ghost‑kitchen concept launched at Seaport Village this past October, Samburgers showcases Sam “the Cooking Guy” Zien’s signature burger recipes inspired by his YouTube channel, including a teriyaki‑bacon burger with grilled pineapple and a guacamole‑topped jalapeño burger; it will be moving into the front space at the Little Italy Food Hall and virtual versions are slated to debut in Costa Mesa in early 2021." - Candice Woo

Wow. Not sure why it's taken me so long to finally try this place out! I really loved their smash burger and their menu options hit home with pineapple soft serve. Their menu is simple and straight so good. I wanted to order everything! But I got their poutine fries and single smash. I'm no poutine connoisseur, but it was pretty damn good. The gravy really made it next level. Parking is small, but there's also street parking. I'm definitely coming back because it was that good. It's not overhyped. It's worth checking out for sure.

Extremely friendly employees, cleanliness is 10/10, and their smash burger is so good! The bun is so fluffy. I tried and the Matty sauce on the burger - it reminds me of the inside of a hard boiled egg and it has diced onions if you are not a fan. I tried the shoe string fries, they were so yummy! The sauce on the side is a smoky flavor and was so delicious. The single cheeseburger combo, with a huge fry and a drink was $18! Adorable place! Highly recommend

This was a fun litte place in Costa Mesa. I was visiting SoCal, and my friends brought me here. This was the first time any of us had tried it. I had the Double Cheeseburger with Matty sauce. Incredble burger. Simple but great! Great spot. Fun atmosphere.

Google
I gotta tell you as far as smash burgers go they do a REALLY great job! I would like to see them grill the mustard on the patties as is traditional. But you do have the option of getting the mustard sauce added after the fact (Mattys sauce). This was the second time we went and we really enjoyed the plain fries this time as opposed to the chili cheese fries we got the previous time (those were just OK). Last time we also got the poutine and it was definitely not my favorite. The gravy tasted like a chicken gravy, as opposed to a brown beef gravy that I'm used to. If you want to try a smashburger (And you actually know what they are. Please don't go here if you are expecting a fat juicy steakhouse style burger), I would say these are some of the best around!

Not sure we will ever get our food. Is there nobody in charge ? Feels like amateur hour. 8 tables waiting for food. 0 with food feeling so lost in translation ! Tables are fighting over orders as they are delivered… Never seen this situation at an In-Out. Somebody better say 6-7 to mellow everyone out. Ok here we go…. Finally got the food. Group of 5 consensus is “it’s ok just not all that” Group liked the fries and Sauces ! The music was the best part…. Where is Matty?

Matty’s Patty’s in Costa Mesa was a spot I had been hearing about from a few friends and even more from someone who shares the same love for The Bear as me. So of course my wife and I along with a friend had to pull up and try it for ourselves. The vibe was super cool and clean inside, really chill setup, and the staff was genuinely kind and helpful from the moment we walked in. I went with the triple burger with Matty’s sauce, a side of those massive crispy onion rings, and the ube shake I kept seeing people rave about. I’m not gonna lie, the burger looked a bit smaller than I expected at first glance, but man the flavor just hit hard. Juicy, cheesy, seasoned perfectly and honestly just straight up satisfying. The crunch from the onion rings was wild and with the variety of sauces they let us sample, everything just worked. Matty’s sauce especially was my top pick. Dipping the rings and even the burger into it made every bite better. And then the ube shake? Yeah that thing was fire. Smooth, creamy, and just the right amount of sweetness. Not too thick and not too icy either which made it perfect to dip fries into. I would literally go back just for that combo alone. Between the great food, cool branding, and top-tier service, I’ve already been sending people this way. This place is gonna stay in the rotation for sure.

Google
Got a triple smash with the spicy mayo and then burger was really solid and good. Not the best smash I've had but definitely up there. I came here prior and had the same smash but with Matty’s sauce and it was definitely not great. The spicy sauce redeemed itself. Overall it’s a good no frills burger cooked legit and just the right amount of char and bread. Give it a try and if you’re not into mustard stay away from the Matty’s sauce. Ruined the burger for me imo.

Google
Decent food, we ordered one double combo one single alone with two drinks and poutine. Not a fan of the poutine but that’s probably just a preference thing the fries are small and thin so they give you a lot of them generous with the salt the buns have a lot of sesame seeds! Overall I think it’s a bit expensive for how the food came out but I believe that the food is fresh here and the biggest plus is that it is dog friendly my fur baby sat with me and I held him during ordering they said nothing :) . 40$ for two people

Yelp
Must try the pineapple Dole whip! Poutine is unforgettable. Those cheese curds are so very delicious!! Bomb chili cheese fries and delicious patty's They are also making things better all the time and will go out of their way to please customers no matter what! I love the level of service.
google avatar

Yelp
Glad I ordered the double patty. Wasn't a lot of meat, and the meat itself was rather bland. The sauce (both Mattys and Pattys) was delicious and definitely elevated it. The sesame seed bun was unique in that it was LOADED with seeds. I liked that, but it was sure messy. Fries were simple, crispy, hot and nicely salted. The 'simply' ketchup was a nice touch. The question has been answered...would I go back? Unlikely...In N Out is more flavorful and cost conscious.

Yelp
We've been looking forward to trying Matty's for a while now. We are big fans of his and heard the smash burgers were some of the best in Orange County and the rumors are true. We stopped in and ate inside the fast food joint on a Saturday night and it was busy but we were able to find seats. We opted for two single burgers "patty style" which allows you to modify the typical smash with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle. We each tried one of the six available sauces. I got the patty sauce which is like a 1,000 island dressing base, and my husband got Matty's sauce which is a unique mustard sauce. We shared a side of fries and got their jalapeño Mayo on the side for dipping. Everything was excellent. In fact, it's the best fast food burger and fries I ever had. Everything was perfectly seasoned and I loved all the sauces. Not a bad price point, we got out for about $25 and the quality was worth it. The place is cute with the surfing hamburger as the mascot. Nice, clean and new. Smallish parking lot but there's nearby neighborhood parking and a walk up window if you don't want to go inside. Can't wait to visit again and give the other sauces a try.

Yelp
A guy helped me out. He looked bothered we were even there. I didn't even feel comfortable asking any more questions so I just looked up at the menu. That alone made the experience not great. The burger was ok. Nothing special. The beef tasted not frozen, I'll give them that. The fries were good. Free refills. 40$ for 2 combos, The sauce kinda made no difference. Husband got the Matty sauce and I got the jalapeño mayo
google avatar

Ivy L.

Yelp
There's a good amount of seating inside and a few parking spots outside -- I went late at night, so parking was easy to find. I got the cheeseburger with Marty Patty sauce and chili cheese fries. The burger was good, though I've had better, and the fries were just okay. The service was friendly, though, and overall I'd come back if I was in the area and craving a smash burger.

Yelp
First time here definitely didn't disappoint. Burger: extremely juicy and well seasoned, the patty sauce added a great flavor while the lettuce and tomato added a freshness Chili cheese fries: they come topped with jalapeño and onion which added a great texture to an already great chili I also tried the dill sauce and jalapeño mayo, which were both good. I will be getting onion rings to dip in the dill sauce next time as well as adding the jalapeño mayo to the burger. The young lady who helped us was super nice and the food took about 10 minutes to come out but was worth it. It is very loud in there which is the only complaint (super minor) of mine. Voices seem to echo. We will be back soon to try more items!

Yelp
Matt's Patty's sits right between the Grand Prix Performance Tires Shop and the corner of Newport Blvd/Cabrillo Street. It's also directly across from the Chevron Gas Station. Warning: The small driveway is only one direction from Newport Blvd & the parking stalls are very short. If you have a large vehicle or don't want any dings, parking on Cabrillo is the way to go. You're welcome! So, it was a late Wed and both Finn (my fur baby) and I were starving. I decided to look up dog-friendly restaurants with a menu for dogs. I was excited to see Matty's in my search result, so I decided to drive by. Being accompanied by my fur baby Finn, so I'm used to leaving him in the car (all windows down) while I run in my order. It's awesome to see there was a walkup window convenient for take out. I didn't realize I couldn't order from the window when the kind employee told me she didn't have a register there and I can go inside and she even invited Finn. Fabulous! This restaurant keeps the foot traffic with one way entrance and exit. Anthony was at the register and was great at explaining the various burger with such class. If you're hungry definitely go for the double! Also, they do protein-style. I wish they had grilled onions, but that's another story. Anthony also recommended to order the fries without salt. The fries are BOMB and the secret is that they're cooked in beef talon. If I could eat these fries, every day, I would be in heaven! There's six different sauces you can put on the burger. Got two sauces on the side since that's what I usually do to control the quantity & mess. I tried the mustard-based Matty's Patty Sauce and the Pickled Jalapeño Mayo. Loved them both! I tried to order the Ube Shake, but unfortunately it was sold out. No worried, I'll get it next time. One thing I would love to mention is the service. I dined in with Finn and it was near closing time. Anthony was diligently starting to prepare to clean, but we had a great chat. Before I left, he was so sweet and gave me a small, very frozen Ube Shake to try. I was so taken back by his sweet gesture. All in all, the food & service here rocks. I never felt so welcome. Canada , love you guys! Thanks for bringing Matty's Patty to Costa Mesa!

Yelp
Im biased toward burger coz im not really fond of burgers. i though the smash burger is a little salty, the sauce is ok but nothing special. We ordered poutine and it was a bit salty for me, what i like the most is the softness and the freshness of the buns. But my nieces loved it. they ordered double patties and i ordered single. The service is great, they are nice and the place is clean but a little cold. we sat by the window to get some sun and warmth. Lots of seating. Oh and they served ube shake which i was told was good.

Yelp
Came to Mattys Pattys on a Tuesday afternoon, and it was already pretty busy--which says a lot! It's located just a short walk from Newport Beach, making it a great stop if you're in the area. The vibe is casual but lively, and the food absolutely lives up to the hype. I had the burger, and it was incredibly juicy and flavorful--every bite was satisfying. We also ordered the poutine, and it hit all the right notes: salty in the best way, with cheese curds that were exactly how they should be. It honestly reminded me of being back in Quebec, which I miss a lot. For dessert, I tried their swirl soft serve. The pineapple portion was so good--bright and refreshing. The vanilla was okay, but it definitely played second fiddle. They also have a happy hour deal Monday through Thursday, which makes it even more worth it. Great spot for a late lunch or early dinner. Definitely recommend checking it out if you're nearby!

Yelp
Menu didn't explain items well such as Matty Style or how to figure out which sauces are which when brought out to me. Burgers were greasy and sauce literally disappeared in taste when sauce was added to the burger. Patty sauce is great, similar to Big Mac burger. The chili cheese fries were amazing! Had onions and jalapeños in it that added flavor. The chili was really good with the fries. Service a bit slow for just 3-4 food items on the menu. Only one shared restroom. Small outdoor patio. There is no drive-thru but there is a walk-up window.
google avatar

Char B.

Yelp
Small burger joint with a walk up window outside for DoorDash and Online order pickups. The cheeseburgers are all smashburger style and really good. Comes with sesame seed bun but they also have a potato bun option without, but it's a lot smaller. All fries cooked in beef tallow and corn oil blend per the menu. The combo option comes with fries and a drink. The fries and onion rings are really good! I tried my friend's poutine and it was good as well but he wishes there was more gravy. It's super bright and clean inside with a cute retro coastal vibe. Service was quick. Just wish it was better clarified the way the menu is written. It looks like all cheeseburgers come with choice of sauce, since it says so on the top of the menu, but it's extra to get sauce which is actually the patty style that's extra 75cents. Other than that everything else was great!

Yelp
I love love love smash burgers but i hate hate hate paying so much for one!!!. I got the patty style (double smash w lettuce and tomato) and subbed for a sesame bun bc they were absolutely loaded w sesame seeds and i thought it looked fun and intriguing, i subbed the patty sauce (mayo based) for the matty sauce (mustard based), and added pickles and onions. I guess that's not really how Patty intended it huh? Whatever, i liked it. The combo came out to like 18 something and while it was good, it was just a burger and fries and a drink so the price felt a little steep for me. Would i go back? Honestly idk! It was a good burger but the location is right where the 55 ends and that area is a nightmare to me. Parking wasn't too bad, though.
google avatar

Amy N.

Yelp
New place to check out! Fun spot in Newport near the 55 fwy. Parking is limited and expect a wait. They have indoor and outdoor seating. We came at 3:30pm on a Sunday and it was packed. Scored on a table but it was dirty and we had to clean it ourselves ‍ they had 1 person bringing out the food and 1 person taking. It's also very loud inside. We tried: -chili cheese fries which was just -cheeseburger -Poutine Overall, it's a fun place to try.

Yelp
Chill vibes made edible. First off the cashiers were so sweet and helpful, 10/10. Love the smash burger, perfectly seasoned. The fries weren't my absolute fave, but you get a lot of them in the combo. The best part might be the fun little selection of different sauces you get to choose from.

Yelp
Matty's Patty's Burger Club is the brain child of Matty Matheson and Pat Tenore. Matty gained popularity on the TV show: The Bear. This places specializes in smash burgers and offers fries, sodas, and a regular 7 oz cheese burger as well. I decided to put them through paces and went with a triple cheeseburger. Triple cheeseburger ($12) - This consisted of 3 patties, each 3 oz. before cooking, American cheese, and choice of sauces, most of which were mustard based and a sesame bun. The burger was similar to other smash burger spots, it was just ok taste wise. I wish they had an option for a different cheese as I don't consider American cheese real cheese. Overall, there was nothing special about the smash burgers here except they utilize sesame buns. Pricing is towards the higher end. There is seating for about 50 people inside and they have a few tables outside. It was pretty empty when I visited on a weekday for lunch. A co-worker ordered some fries and those looked pretty basic. They have some limited parking in their lot as well as street parking.
google avatar

Justin N.

Yelp
If you're for a delicious smash burger with some wonderful sauces - Matty's Is the place for you! We went here because like many patrons, we're fans of Matt Matheson, so we wanted to see what he had in store for us! I got a double smash with onions and pickles, and my gf got the single. If you're hungry, the double smash will definitely get you. The burgers flavor was great - everything you look in a great smash burger, and I also love the classic sesame seed buns, something that has been lacking at other burger spots. They also don't skimp out on the fries, if you order a single combo and another burger, it would be more than enough for two. Ambiance is like that of a classic burger joint, parking is a bit small, so you may need to park in the street or adjacent neighborhood.
google avatar

Lori K.

Yelp
We returned to Matty's to try more of the items on the menu. This time in addition to our burgers we tried the onion rings, poutine and the dill sauce. Let me start with that dill sauce and say that is THE SAUCE! It's soooooo good! It's the perfect complement for the onion rings. The poutine was great too and I look forward to having that again someday, but we agreed that the stand out was still the chilli cheese fries from our last visit. So what are we going to try at our third visit? Well the ube shake and dole whip obviously! : )
google avatar

Thomas R.

Yelp
Finally tried out this place. The staff almost seemed annoyed I was there. The burger wasn't anything to write home about. Could use more seasoning and more sauce. The poutine was incredible though. Probably the best in Orange County. Would be intrigued to try the Matty style but In n Out has a better burger than the patty style.
google avatar

Teresa B.

Yelp
Is this advertised as a fast food restaurant? Because it was not fast. I waited 25 minutes for my order: one triple, one double, poutine, and onion rings. I could've walked to the ghost kitchen, ordered something, and received it before my Matty Patty order. Honestly, the burger was good and filling. I think it was seasoned well with plenty of sauce options. You must choose your sauce when ordered: mustard burger sauce, mayo burger sauce, pickled jalapeno mayo, spicy ketchup, or sweet dip. The onion rings were burned and the onion was a sliver inside batter, a little disappointing. I probably why I felt full, because I was eating so much batter. Poutine was lacking in the gravy, I couldn't tell it was poured over. The gravy was basically the same color as the cheese curds. The fries were good, it reminded me of mcdonalds fries, but cold. Ube shake was good too. You might have to finish your dessert before getting your main order. They have a small parking lot and huge patio.

Yelp
I tried to surprise my girlfriend today, but the feeling was like when you have your birthday balloon from your parents and then it just pops. Upon entering it was a cute little place! I loved the decor and cool design on the merch. It had nice patio seating and a cool inside seating area with chairs from school where you imagine you're at a lunch cafeteria. I sit here and wonder how many of these people actually know of Matty because I love cooking and watch all of his shows on YouTube. Ordering was easy and cashier was very nice. Right after we ordered the drinks came out instantly, which was nice. I wish our food came out instantly though. I've worked at a lot of different restaurants so I definitely understand if people are still learning and it's new. However, 25 minutes for a 2 burgers, poutine and onion rings was a little tough. I probably could have went to the ghost kitchen and finished my meal before getting my burgers. Triple with 2 cheese 5/5 - Burger was actually pretty solid. I like the super loaded sesame soft buns and the sauces that came with it. Double for my gf 5/5 - Mattys sauce was nice with the burger. I like the raw onions that give it a little crunch. Poutine 3/5 - I've had poutine in Toronto in Montreal before, so I was hoping this would hit the spot, but it was lacking gravy. I think because they're waiting for the burgers and fries to finish the poutine got cold. Onion rings 4/5 - I usually am an onion ring fanatic, these were good but it had a sliver of onion in it. Maybe a little overcooked but I still ate them. Sauces - Loved the Jalapeno mayo and spicy ketchup. Ube Shake - 5/5 - I was surprised they had Ube on the menu, but it was actually pretty tasty. Overall, it was a solid burger if I didn't wait 25 minutes. I know it's been a couple months since they've opened but it was a little slow. I could even tell the expeditor/manager maybe was getting frustrated and she rolled her eyes. Hopefully they can do some efficiency training and maybe I'll stop by a couple months from now to see if things have improved but for now I'll be satisfying my burger cravings at Nellys or In N Out.
google avatar

Karen B.

Yelp
Burgers were awesome! We each ordered a double. One with Matty sauce and the other with Patty sauce. We also got an order of fries and onion rings. Both super solid as well. Might be the best onion rings ever. They're the beer batter type and the onion inside does not come out when you take a bite. Ordered at the counter then the food was delivered to us. The cashier was nice and answered all our questions. The food runner was nice too. Simple interior and very clean. There was lots of available seating when we arrived around 3pm on a Saturday. We opted to sit at the counter that faces the window so we could see all the fancy cars drive by.

Yelp
Some of the best burgers I've ever had, and I used to work at in n out. I've had Matty's Patty's twice in Toronto and it was amazing, so glad that there's a 2nd location here in Costa Mesa. The service has always been great. The workers all seem friendly and the location is perfect, love the ambiance here, nice indoor seating and a solid parking lot. Thanks Matty's Patty's!
google avatar

Yelp
Went on a weeknight to try avoid the crowd. The food and service was extremely quick with a very relaxing ambiance. Ordered the double cheeseburger with the jalapeño mayo sauce + spicy ketchup. The fries were very tasty, and the Ube Shake was something I've never seen and therefore had to get one! Overall the food is tasty but like many reviews it seems to be a bit on the saltier side. I'd definitely give it another shot in the near future if in the area again!

Yelp
Disappointing first visit today after finally being in the area. Expensive, sloppy execution of a classic american food concept in a great location left me wanting more. Much love to matty regardless, just always gotta keep it honest. 3.5 rounded down overall. Food (2/5) - Ordered a single to try a basic item and also ordered a single pattys style combo to taste the upgrade as well. The combo handed us a mountain of fries that were just alright, salted well. However the simple single lacked a noticeable sauce portion plus the buns were slathered in way too much liquid butter and weren't fully toasted, rendered the whole burger soggy and could only taste the butter. The patty's style single was better, especially with the added veg and potato bun. Meat was cooked and seasoned well, but not impressive enough to justify a $9 burger ($26 overall for a combo and an extra single) unfortunately, maybe I should have tried some of the more unique menu items like the shakes or the poutine. Service (5/5) - Lively folks working here, very welcoming and helped us with our first time menu experience. Even brought the food to us after calling out our order name despite being an order at the counter spot which was cool. Lots of staff constantly cleaning. Best experience of the visit. Ambiance (4/5) - Location location location is mad important I get it, and they absolutely nailed a prime major roadside spot with fantastic beach themed interior with tons of seating, killer playlists on the speakers and even a walk up exterior order window. Parking is on the smaller side but we went during non peak hours. Overall not much of a recommendable experience as the positives didn't outweigh the bad quality and price tag of the food (also considering the "celebrity chef restaurant" schtick)
google avatar

Becky C.

Yelp
WOW! I think I like this place more than in-n-out! I thought the lettuce version is a lot more easy to eat with a better meat to lettuce ratio than an in-n-out burger protein style. Plently of seats inside and outside.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Food is delicious. Great smash patties and you get to support a super cool chef. Service is super hit or miss but food has always been solid. I know it's a quick service place but there just some things that are a little annoying. Came inside the restaurant after ordering online to eat in the store and the person working the register couldn't be bothered because he was flirting with two other patrons behind us to have someone just hand it over to him and rather told us to walk out the store pick it up at their outside service window and come back inside to eat. Other times we have had someone who is more than happy to explain the entire menu, sauces and variations of all the burgers. My personal favorite is the triple patty's style and the poutine. If you don't like smash burgers you can always get The Matty which is a pretty solid steakhouse style burger patty.
google avatar

Leah C.

Yelp
woah the vegetarian cheeseburger was very spookily meat-y! The interior is super cool, old school house plus surf shack typa vibes. They've drawn in a "The Bear" fan customer base, for sure, but it seems like the scope of their reach has extended beyond just that.
google avatar

Jenna A.

Yelp
I have to say, this place might just be my new favorite in all of Costa Mesa / Newport. Matty's Patty's is an incredible fast casual dining spot. I have been twice in the last 10 days, and can confidently say I cannot wait to go back! With both of my visits, the cashiers have been extremely helpful when asking for sauce recommendations and other questions. They are on top of their game with service, offering refills and removing your trash from your table if you are still sitting and chatting. My two favorite sauces are the Jalapeño and the Patty's! Love getting the Pickled Jalapeño one on my burger, and some Patty's sauce on the side for my fries!! Food is hot, delicious, and easily devour-able! I was hoping to go tonight before I realized they were closed on Mondays... anywho, see you soon MP!!

Justine K.

Yelp
I've heard of this establishment through word of mouth and it did not disappoint. Upon walking in we were immediately greeted. It is a casual fast food type establishment where you order and just take a seat. The ambiance is nothing too fancy, so it's be good for a quick catch up with friends. We ordered onion rings and cheeseburgers. They also have meal options (burger, fries, plus drink) if that's more your speed. The burger was good, with the sesame burger bun and their special sauce. The onion rings were very crispy - just how I liked them. Overall, the food was good. But the downside was the pricing. It's pretty expensive compared to other places. Side note: there is a small parking lot
google avatar

Yelp
Cool spot! The vibe inside is cool & clean. This place definitely feels like a high end fast food burger spot which is always fun. Branding is sick for sure. I got a double cheeseburger with Matty's sauce. Sauce is pretty good, kinda like thousand island or Big Mac sauce maybe? I liked it. The burger is super simple, just bun, patties, cheese, and sauce. No onions, lettuce, tomato, etc. The simplicity is good I think, but I also wonder if it would be nice to have extra toppings to go with it. I tried the jalapeño mayo on the side too, and it's good as well. My friend likes it the best. I got a side of onion rings, kind of just on a whim because it sounded good, and I'm so glad I did! They were awesome. Best I've had in a while. The fries are solid too, cooked it beef tallow oil, and you can definitely taste it. They're similar to McDonald's fries to me. Very crisp & thin and good flavor! Pineapple soft serve is also very good. And the chocolate shake is good, super rich. My wife didn't finish hers. Super curious about the Matty burger? The 7oz one that takes longer. I'd be interested in trying that next time. Left this place very full & satisfied! Idk if I would come regularly but I'm glad we got to try it. Thank you chef

Yelp
This place is ok. My husband has been dying to try it so we finally headed over this past weekend. We arrived around 11:45, the tiny lot was full so we parked down the street. There were 5 people ahead of us in line, and they stayed consistently busy throughout our visit. I typically only drink water or iced tea. Their free water was disgusting, it was lukewarm and had a bad taste. I tossed that and went to get an iced tea - they only serve soda and Fanta, which was a huge bummer. Also, all refills have to be done by staff, not sure if they charge for them though. Food was out in about 20 minutes. He had a double patty smash burger and fries, I had the Matty Burger and Poutine. The food was ok. Both burgers were similar in taste, only big difference was mine was a thicker patty. I personally didn't prefer one over the other. I liked the Matty's Patty's sauce, a mustard based condiment. The fries were nothing special. The poutine was meh, not like poutine i'd had in the past. The gravy tasted like Thanksgiving stuffing, and the cheese curds were super soft and not squeaky at all. Definitely not the best burgers, or fries, we have had. I can't see myself eating here again.

Yelp
Mattys pattys currently occupies a previous donut shop and has been turned into a one stop for smash burgers! Albeit, it's on the pricier side for the combos. All burgers with or without cheese cost the same unless you double or triple the patties. It is REALLy good with their specialty sauce. One thing you should not sleep on is their chocolate shake. It's like a fudgesicle in shake form. Delicious. Next time I recommend ordering online and going up to the outdoor pick up window. There is limited parking so that may be the best way to go.

Yelp
Short: Tasty burger with great ingredients, with nice atmosphere and a unique restaurant. Long: I enjoyed my meal at Matty's, the burger was full of flavor and the restaurant is a fun and lively place. The best part about the burger had to be the bun, an old school sesame bun, full of flavor and reminds me of some of my favorite burger places of when I was a kid. The one thing I didn't love is that, while I know they aim for a smash burger without toppings, I think some crisp lettuce and juicy tomato would pair really well with the beef and sesame bun. Onion rings were above average and had a nice crisp. Overall I think this place is worth checking out and the service is pretty fast even with the long lines.

Yelp
Review coming from someone who ordered online. I ordered a cheeseburger added onions and the sauces on the side. I also got a double cheeseburger combo also added onions, regular fries and a chocolate milkshake. $30 Walked in to get my order and was not greeted just starred at. I said I had an online order the guy processed to get my order then sets it down behind him and just talks to the cashier working the front. He then makes my chocolate shake and sets it in front of me and doesn't even hand me my order. I'm just standing waiting looking at them. 7 min go by and then he puts the order next to the milk shake and doesn't even say here you go. I figured it was mine since it had my name. I get home and sit down to have my burger only to realize no onion was put on either burger even though I had paid extra to get onion on my burgers. The burger itself was alright. The sauces were good but nothing out of this world. One tasted like spicy mayo and the other one just like mustard with pickles mixed in.

Yelp
Parking is a little tricky around here, miss them on Newport and you have to drive around the block, or get street parking. Not too crowded at lunch today, fast and friendly service. Menu is pretty simple and straight forward. A few special sauces to choose from. The burger was pretty tasty and filling. I got a double and had a little left over. Huge fries serving, left over fries too. Surf hut type environment, decals all over. Clean and simple. Decent amount of indoor and patio seating. IMO if you map out the back way in and out you can save some time, Newport Blvd has lots of weenies at lunchtime to navigate.

Yelp
Ordered: single cheese burger, fries, Diet Coke, mattys sauce, jalapeño mayo, spicy ketchup to-go! Highlights: the sauces! mattys sauce was a mustard base I believe (reminded me of the in n out sauce), jalapeño mayo tasted like a jalapeño pretzel from wetzel's pretzels (iykyk, delish), and the spicy ketchup (my personal fav) had small chunks of tomato and just a touch of warmth which had me constantly coming back for more. Service: we ordered online and waited an additional 10 min or so. Good amount of seating inside and outside. Notes: The burger was good but nothing too crazy. Not sure if the burger is worth the price but it was a fun experience overall. They also give you your drink from behind the counter instead of you filling your own. Just a note!

Yelp
The smash burgers were delicious. And the poutine had huge cheese curds under delicious gravy. The onion rings were perfectly cooked and the size of the order is twice what is needed to fill you up. Service was friendly and knowledgeable. Sad to see that the donut shop had to go to make room for Mattys but they did a good job keeping the structure intact .

Yelp
Matty's Patty's in Costa Mesa was a spot I had been hearing about from a few friends and even more from someone who shares the same love for The Bear as me. So of course my wife and I along with a friend had to pull up and try it for ourselves. The vibe was super cool and clean inside, really chill setup, and the staff was genuinely kind and helpful from the moment we walked in. I went with the triple burger with Matty's sauce, a side of those massive crispy onion rings, and the ube shake I kept seeing people rave about. I'm not gonna lie, the burger looked a bit smaller than I expected at first glance, but man the flavor just hit hard. Juicy, cheesy, seasoned perfectly and honestly just straight up satisfying. The crunch from the onion rings was wild and with the variety of sauces they let us sample, everything just worked. Matty's sauce especially was my top pick. Dipping the rings and even the burger into it made every bite better. And then the ube shake? Yeah that thing was fire. Smooth, creamy, and just the right amount of sweetness. Not too thick and not too icy either which made it perfect to dip fries into. I would literally go back just for that combo alone. Between the great food, cool branding, and top-tier service, I've already been sending people this way. This place is gonna stay in the rotation for sure.

Yelp
We made the trek from Lakewood to see what all the online hype was about. I'm still not so sure. Parking was not easy at this place on a Friday night. Seems everyone else had the same idea. We walked into a restaurant that was 3/4 full. We still were able to walk up, order and find a seat. The veggies burger was average in taste. Maybe the beef burger was worth all the fuss. For someone who cannot eat beef, I'm stuck with the alternatives. The poutine fries were not what I expected. It felt like they used cheap ingredients and added a bunch of salt. If I go back, I will only get plain fries. Others in the group had beef burgers with side orders. They all agreed that this was only an average meal. The restaurant was typical fast food seating. It was clean and the staff were very friendly. It was a good place to try out but I'm not sure I would make that drive again. I'm sure if I were a local, I may try it a second time.

Yelp
The burgers are absolutely delicious! We also really enjoyed the poutine and chili cheese fries, you really can't go wrong with anything here. The shakes are amazing too, and the service is wonderful. Plenty of inside seating, but to go is also possible. They are so friendly and welcoming, not to mention helpful and efficient. Excellent option if you are looking for a great burger and fries!

Yelp
3/5 - Double cheese burger with matty's sauce, the OG sauce is mustard heavy with onion which overpowers the taste of burger. 3.5/5 - Single cheese burger with jalapeño mayo, the sauce is better than the signature sauce. 4/5 - Poutine, what can I say? I like gravy on my fries. The cheese curds were fine, not fresh or super salty. You can find a standard smash burger here, but a bit overpriced totaling at $33 for my entire order with tip. I recommend the jalapeño mayo over the signature sauce for a better balance of flavors. I arrived around 11:30am and didn't wait too long in line or for my food. Street parking is plentiful so I didn't bother checking their lot.

Yelp
Amazing burgers, just like I'd make a home, if I cooked well! Really great, friendly service. If I didn't live 900 miles away, I'd be here all of the time.

Yelp
Been a fan of Matty as a chef, long before his role on the bear, so I had to come in and try his burger. I got the double cheese burger with Matty's sauce and it was one of the best smash burgers I've had. Not greasy at all, patties super juicy and flavorful, great mustard sauce and it all held together until the last bite which is hard to do - most other smash burgers fall apart into a huge mess but this one had solid infrastructure. (Yes, burger infrastructure is a thing.) I also have to shoutout the sesame seed bun. Switching it up from the potato bun and I honestly love it. The only other place I've seen use a sesame seed bun for their smash burgers is Amboy in LA, which is another top joint for me. If I wasn't trying to be good about my diet, I would have destroyed a poutine. Just thought I'd throw that out there if anyone was wondering. Overall delicious burger, friendly service, yes there's a wait and they're gonna make mistakes with your orders because it's a new staff so give them some grace and be patient!

Yelp
Got the Matty burger in lieu of a smash burger and was happily surprised given the mixed reviews of the restaurant. Solid burger, cooked to perfection, served with pickles, Matty's sauce, onions and cheese. Bun was toasted and held the burger together nicely. Tried the regular fries and chili fries, and would stick with the regular ones next time. Line wasn't bad when I went and the wait for the food was manageable. It is expensive for a burger, fries and a drink -- will stick with in n out on a regular basis, but would return here every now and again for something a little different and more substantial.

Yelp
This had to be one of the worst burgers I've ever had. I wanted to like this so bad. Like many others, I was very excited to try this because of The Bear. I joined the line at about 3:30 and waited about 15-20 minutes in line. But then it took about 30 minutes for my food to come out. I'm sorry but no burger in the world should take that long. The people waiting around me said the same thing. Limited parking in the lot and there's also street parking but it shouldn't be that hard to find a spot. The place was clean and there were plenty of seats inside and outside but since the food takes so long, a lot of those tables were taken by people just waiting. I got The Matty, chili cheese fries, and a coke. Do they just pour as many sesame seeds as they can on top of every bun? I've never seen so much sesame seeds on a bun in my life. The thing is, the patty was actually cooked perfectly. But then it's like they decided to ruin the burger by putting as much mustard as humanly possible. I felt like I was eating a spoonful of mustard with every bite it was insane. I was not a fan of the chili cheese fries either. Can they at least melt the cheese? It was like eating shredded cheese straight out of a package. I won't be back but if you read this and still decide to go, maybe tell them to go easy on the mustard unless you're obsessed with mustard and get regular fries or onion rings instead of chili cheese fries.

Yelp
Bland? Definitely not. Crazy that so many people gave it low ratings and said it was bland. Because the burgers were not bland when we went, it was the exact opposite. This is one of the better smash burgers I have had. I got the triple patty one with a side fries. Fries were fine- I feel you can only make fries so good anyways. But the burger was tasty! We did use the Matty's sauce and it was a great combo with the patties. So perhaps people got it plain or did something different which is why they said it was bland. We went on Saturday night around 6:45 and only waited about 15/20 minutes. Some staff were very friendly and some were still friendly just young/shy. Inside it's a simple set up- which is the point. This is not supposed to be a fine dining restaurant so people complaining about the ambiance are hilarious. There is a small parking lot and decent street parking nearby. Is not overhyped in my opinion - will be back for sure when I feel like a burger. If you like burgers you definitely should try this place in Costa Mesa!

Yelp
One word defines this place: adequate. The burgers are good, but not great. I like to have an option of different cheeses, which are not offered here. American cheese or no cheese. Like mustard on your burger? This is not your place. No mustard offering. The chili fries are decent. The ambiance? Hard, loud, acerbic punk rock when we visited the place. Not our jamb.

Yelp
Was really excited to try this place but like many others I had to succumb to waiting almost an hour for our meal (you'd think 3PM would be an off hour, but there's basically a line at all times). It's clear that there is a massive demand for this place and they are still working out the kinks, so my advice to anyone wanting to come is to wait a month or so. Coming here now is like going to Pink's Hot Dog during its prime - you're going to wait a long time for a mediocre meal. That being said, here's what we ordered: 2 single smash patty's with the Matty's Patty's sauce (I'd recommend adding onions and pickles because it comes plain otherwise): The patty was fine, not much crust because they are making them in batches to keep up with demand, but I liked the sauce and the bun a lot. It's a fine burger overall, but nothing really stood out about it (and certainly not worth an hour wait). Chili Cheese Fries: These took a while to make, but were solid. Nothing to write home about, but they tasted good. Dill Sauce, Jalapeño Mayo, Smoky Sauce: These were the star of the show, all of them were great and I highly recommend them. Overall, this place is VERY overhyped, so I'd strongly recommend waiting and getting your burger fix at Hammer Burger until they've got their process figured out. I'll happily give this place another chance then too.
