Burgers by Sam the Cooking Guy Coming to the Little Italy Food Hall | Eater San Diego

"Starting as a ghost‑kitchen concept launched at Seaport Village this past October, Samburgers showcases Sam “the Cooking Guy” Zien’s signature burger recipes inspired by his YouTube channel, including a teriyaki‑bacon burger with grilled pineapple and a guacamole‑topped jalapeño burger; it will be moving into the front space at the Little Italy Food Hall and virtual versions are slated to debut in Costa Mesa in early 2021." - Candice Woo

Extremely friendly employees, cleanliness is 10/10, and their smash burger is so good! The bun is so fluffy. I tried and the Matty sauce on the burger - it reminds me of the inside of a hard boiled egg and it has diced onions if you are not a fan. I tried the shoe string fries, they were so yummy! The sauce on the side is a smoky flavor and was so delicious. The single cheeseburger combo, with a huge fry and a drink was $18! Adorable place! Highly recommend

I thought the burger was fantastic. The amount of sesame seeds on the bun give the burger a slight crunch and texture. I added pickles and onions and Matty sauce (a mustard based sauce). I though it was better than In n Out, totally preference though as it's a similar style smash burger. The poutine was pretty good, definitely the better of what you can get in the states. The location isn't the best as parking is difficult and it's along a busy street, but still a vibe.

Matty’s Patty’s in Costa Mesa was a spot I had been hearing about from a few friends and even more from someone who shares the same love for The Bear as me. So of course my wife and I along with a friend had to pull up and try it for ourselves. The vibe was super cool and clean inside, really chill setup, and the staff was genuinely kind and helpful from the moment we walked in. I went with the triple burger with Matty’s sauce, a side of those massive crispy onion rings, and the ube shake I kept seeing people rave about. I’m not gonna lie, the burger looked a bit smaller than I expected at first glance, but man the flavor just hit hard. Juicy, cheesy, seasoned perfectly and honestly just straight up satisfying. The crunch from the onion rings was wild and with the variety of sauces they let us sample, everything just worked. Matty’s sauce especially was my top pick. Dipping the rings and even the burger into it made every bite better. And then the ube shake? Yeah that thing was fire. Smooth, creamy, and just the right amount of sweetness. Not too thick and not too icy either which made it perfect to dip fries into. I would literally go back just for that combo alone. Between the great food, cool branding, and top-tier service, I’ve already been sending people this way. This place is gonna stay in the rotation for sure.

I gotta tell you as far as smash burgers go they do a REALLY great job! I would like to see them grill the mustard on the patties as is traditional. But you do have the option of getting the mustard sauce added after the fact (Mattys sauce). This was the second time we went and we really enjoyed the plain fries this time as opposed to the chili cheese fries we got the previous time (those were just OK). Last time we also got the poutine and it was definitely not my favorite. The gravy tasted like a chicken gravy, as opposed to a brown beef gravy that I'm used to. If you want to try a smashburger (And you actually know what they are. Please don't go here if you are expecting a fat juicy steakhouse style burger), I would say these are some of the best around!

Got a triple smash with the spicy mayo and then burger was really solid and good. Not the best smash I've had but definitely up there. I came here prior and had the same smash but with Matty’s sauce and it was definitely not great. The spicy sauce redeemed itself. Overall it’s a good no frills burger cooked legit and just the right amount of char and bread. Give it a try and if you’re not into mustard stay away from the Matty’s sauce. Ruined the burger for me imo.

Some places can transport you... After one bite, tears filled my eyes and I was in Paris, visiting a literal hole in the wall burger spot. The quality of the meat here at MPBC is top notch! While skinny fries aren't my favorite, I know it's the trend but I LOVE crinkle cut! That said, the fries are just as they were supposed to be, crispy outside and fluffy inside, with the just the right amount of salt. We also tried the chili fries (good) and the onion rings (great), they are almost sweet with perfect amount of crisp! I tried a Matty burger and a double smashed burger. The Matty think patty was so good! Juicy and delicious. The smashed burgers were perfectly crispy on the edges and not too salty which can happen at smash burger joints. I would definitely come again. Come for the smash burger and get the onion rings. On a side note, the vibes here are immaculate! The music was so relaxing. We sat outside and enjoyed the golden hour.

I checked out Matty’s Patty’s and had a mixed experience. The poutine was a bit underwhelming the cheese curds felt a little cold, and both the fries and gravy could use more seasoning to really bring out the flavor. The burger looked great, but it was a little dry and could’ve used more seasoning too. The sauce didn’t quite hit or tie everything together. What stood out to me was the Ube Shake, really unique and caught my attention. One of the staff joked that it tasted like the bottom of a cereal bowl, and honestly, that was kinda true and an interesting way to describe it. Overall, the vibe was chill, but there’s definitely room for improvement in the flavor department.

Decent food, we ordered one double combo one single alone with two drinks and poutine. Not a fan of the poutine but that’s probably just a preference thing the fries are small and thin so they give you a lot of them generous with the salt the buns have a lot of sesame seeds! Overall I think it’s a bit expensive for how the food came out but I believe that the food is fresh here and the biggest plus is that it is dog friendly my fur baby sat with me and I held him during ordering they said nothing :) . 40$ for two people
