Super delicious food and great prices. One dish of peanut stew was enough for 3 people. And the tilapia was superb. Authentic, affordable, and immensely tasty.

The Red Snapper and the chicken were cooked well and tasted great. Good rice as well!

I got the red snapper with plantain, came with a side of yummy pickled onions. Really yummy, and great customer service.

First timer. This establishment was recommended by a friend and I'm glad he did! I had the grilled red snapper. The sides were also delicious. The food was absolutely delicious. The staff including the owner were friendly and made recommendations based on listening to my questions. I will be back with my family! Also, the ginger juice is really good too!

My first time yesterday. I absolutely love the jollof rice as it reminds me of a really good fried rice. Wasn’t too salty or anything. Close to perfect. The fataya if that’s the name was an easy 10/10. Spice was perfect and the little onion sauce that came with it was on point. The grilled red snapper however was my main target as it is one of my favorite fish. I don’t think it was grilled but fried then prolly put on flame. Idk but didn’t seemed or tasted grill to me. The snapper was also a bit over cooked so a little too dry for me. The seasoning was a little too salty but the sauce did its thing. I really love this food and will be back. Hopefully next time I can request my snapper to be cooked less and less salt and would’ve been perfect.

Google
This is by far one of my favorite restaurants in Detroit 10/10 never disappoints me . The red snapper is my absolute favorite , so flavorful and fresh . The jollof rice is amazing as well . If you haven’t been here yet you are missing out on some good eating . The staff is friendly every time I go and the wait time isn’t long at all . I also had the half chicken which is also delicious as well , don’t forget to grab a ginger juice to go with your meal . You will thank me later . Trust me you’re going to go back every time , I drive from Taylor to go here it’s worth the drive . Your welcome 😋

Google
Authentic African Senegalese food in the heart of Detroit. Their FISH (red snapper) is to DIE FOR, literally some of the best fish I have had in the world bc of the spices they use. The onion sauce that comes with side of entree is also phenomenal and will make any food taste amazing. Plus it’s all halal!

Yelp
This place is like a hole-in-the-wall spot with orange plastic booth benches. Locals and regulars getting comfortable give it a unique vibe compared to any place I've ever been. I got my food relatively fast--under 10 minutes. The lamb is gamey, so if you can't handle that, it's not the dish for you. Strong flavors of black pepper and a hint of garlic. There were three types of onions: yellow mustard onions, pickled caramelized onions, and grilled sweet onions. The jollof rice reminds me almost of Asian fried rice with a smoky note and possibly a tomato flavor. Definitely coming back here when in Detroit.

Yelp
Mostly a takeout business that does have a few tables but it's not really a est-in place. They're known for their snapper but we liked their chicken too

Yelp
Maty's is a hidden gem. The half chicken yassa and the deebee with jollof rice are my favorites, and I love the juice as well. The service is always super nice, and the portions and prices are really good. The flavor is top tier and I'll always enjoy coming here. The only downside is if you come later during dinner, they may be out of a lot of menu items. However, everything I've tried on the menu has been great, so that's not really an issue because I get to try something new that's also good.

Yelp
First time ordering from Maty's. Call in order. They needed 20 minutes to get my order made. Took me fifteen minutes to get there. I ordered the grilled snapper with jolof rice. Excited always to try new west African restaurants. Only to go in and they not have my order. But tried to sell me someone else's order of chicken. I kindly declined as I wanted my order. He explained my order would be another 20 minutes. I kindly walked out, but definitely with no food. The point is if you order make sure to confirm they will have your food if you're driving over 15 minutes.

Yelp
Food was pretty good only down fall is I wish I had more. We tried the food buffet but quantity they gave was a bite size for meats and a bunch of rice. You'll get more if you just order instead of doing the buffet. Service was great and welcoming. Ambiance felt very welcoming clean and comfortable. Like a mom and pops shop.

Yelp
Great food & quick service ! Good place to dine in! We got two dishes & enjoyed both.

Jade L.

Yelp
A few people recommended this place and Maty's did not disappoint. The customer service was good and though I needed a few minutes to decide on what I wanted, my order was taken and put in quickly. The wait wasn't bad, maybe about 15 minutes. I ordered a red snapper with a side of Jollof rice, and it came with 2 different type of onions on the side. The red snapper was the star of the show. It was so tasty and could be eaten by itself. The rice was also very flavorful and I enjoyed it with the carmelized onions. The pickled - like onions were more on the spicy side. I also recommend giving the hisbicus drink a try. All in all, I will definitely be back to Maty's.

Yelp
Touched down in Detroit to visit my Uncle and Aunty and the first place we had to stop was Maty's! My go to is the Lamb Deebee and when I tell you I was craving this plate as soon as I got in the plane, that would be an understatement. Got some jollof rice and plantains to top it off. I can officially say I have arrived to D town!

Yelp
Food is always seasoned and fresh and hot!! I have known Matt for many years and she is a superb cook and person.

Yelp
Dine in available. Lunchroom style booths with 3 (2) seater tables next to each other along 1 wall. Wallpaper covering the tables. We were shown a serving of the lunch special & my Mom changed from the lamb skewers to that, but I maintained my original order. Took a noticeable amount of time for the food to be cooked BUT it was brought out on platters that left more than enough to be taken home. Food is DELICIOUS

Yelp
This place will always have a place in my heart as a first African restaurant love. Everything is made to order and the drinks are house made. It is a small interior but I haven't seen a day with a full house. Typically, I get carry out regardless then grab some dessert around the corner (if you know, you know ) I've had everything in the menu except the fish which the only reason I haven't is because I usually try something new off a friend's plate because I'm getting lamb yassa everytime or nothing at all . The shanks just do something to me and they give you two which apparently is unheard of in most other African restaurants. Spice level is medium to low compared to average restaurants in this category. Unless you plan to dine in, call you order in advance and pick it up. I promise it will be hot to handle when it's in your hands...and delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place! I have only had the Red Snapper and Tilapia as I don't really partake in the other meats offered. The Red Snapper is very good just as long as it's not fried too hard. The Tilapia is good too however in my humble opinion the Red Snapper for the win! Service is always good and pleasant and Maty's will always be my go to spot for Jollof and Red Snapper!!

Yelp
Ok let's talk about how amazing this place is!!! I was in Detroit yesterday and really craving African (Nigerian) food. I went to Kola but the entire place was packed and I wasn't interested in waiting so I just googled African food and Maty's popped up so I went there straight away. Pros: I had no idea this was a Senegalese restaurant. I had never been to one so I was really excited to try it out. The ambience in the restaurant is quite nice. It's a small artsy restaurant and I thought that was really cool. You have to go to the counter to order your food however if you're eating in, they bring your food to the table. I ordered the Debee (grilled lamb) - $15 and sides of jollof and plantain ($3 each) which were really delicious!!!!! The size of the platter is huge for the price. I was super full and had to request a to-go box. Also the service was really great! The server was really patient with me while it took me ages to study the menu and helped with recommendations. I would definitely check this spot out again! Cons: I requested the cocktail but that was not available. It wasn't a big deal but you might want to call in before heading there to see if an item you want from the menu is available. Overall I would 10/10 recommend this place! Enjoy:)

Yelp
My daughter got carry outs and dropped dinner off to my job. I got deebee with jollof rice and my daughter got yassa chicken. Great flavors on the meats, the mustard onion sauce is delicious as well! The deebee had a little too much gristle, some bone, and lots of fatty pieces so the actual meat portion is only about half of what you see in the pic, but it was more than enough for me. I know those things add flavor, but the gristle is very offputting to me. My daughter said the yassa chicken was flavorful and falling off the bone. I asked her to save me some... she wasn't going for it. It must be something special cuz she usually doesn't eat that much! Djollof rice was amazing, it has a little bit of heat in it which I enjoyed... and the order is huge!

Yelp
I called in carry out ahad the red snapper with cous cous.....half chicken with jollof rice. Everyone talks about the onions that are served with the meat and how delicious it is and I have to say they are right!!! The fish was a nice size. It's served in a aluminum pan which is brilliant. The chicken is delicious. The cous cous had mixed veggies in it as well as the jollof rice. I'm going back for sure.

Josette A.

Yelp
This place is a hidden Detroit gem. So much flavour and large portion. $13 for half chicken and 1 side and $3 for an additional side. The chicken came with caramelized onions. If you like spicy food, ask for hot sauce on the side it was .

Yelp
I was in Detroit, Michigan recently for the weekend to check out Detroit's food scene. Detroit has a lot of really underrated mom and pops restaurants imo, you just need to know where to look. After some research, I ended up at Maty's Cuisine located on Grand River Ave. It's a West African restaurant that specializes in Senegalese cuisine. Dropped by for dinner on a Saturday night. It wasn't that busy but they seemed to do a lot of takeout business. I went with a half chicken yassa dinner ($13.00 USD plus tax) which comes with an option of one side of either cus cus, vermicelle, yellow rice, djollof rice or fried plantains. I went with the fried plantains. The yassa chicken is really amazing, especially the skin. The marinade sauce is a dijon mustard, black pepper, garlic, peppers, onions, vinegar and jimbo seasoning mix. It's like a bbq chicken with a different seasoning flavour profile. All the different ingredients that make up the marinade/sauce gives the yassa chicken an amazing exotic flavour. Meat inside was pretty tender but it's all about the skin and marinade sauce. The dish also came with an onion coleslaw and sauteed onions, pretty good in general. The fried plantains were amazing, nicely caramelized, plump, tender and perfectly cooked. Overall, I definitely recommend Maty's Cuisine. It's a hole in the wall gem for Senegalese food. The place isn't that big inside, they probably have around 6 tables. Pretty good for small groups. Service was pretty friendly and helpful especially if you aren't familiar with Senegalese food. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the D or ever visiting the D.

Yelp
This hidden gem is definitely worth seeking out. The food was delicious. It's a shame I would really like to try their egg rolls but they were out and it was 4:00 in the afternoon. One would think it'd make a few more. However, the chicken yassa was delicious It lived up to every expectation. Many people had told me about it but I didn't really know if I was going to be able to say that it was different than any other chicken. Well let me tell you that it is, flavorful and delicious. I also tried one of the other appetizers, it is a tuna filled empanada. They probably would have been delicious if it actually had filling. It missed the mark, it was fried bread very little filling and very hollow. I give this place four stars because the chicken was so good. I hope they step up on the rest of their menu.

Yelp
Oh my Gawsh YES! I found what I have always wanted but never knew I needed. The decor is Senegalese prints, drums, bright modern signs, colorful and festive table covers and open space for the take-out sit-in style space. This sits 6 small groups like a cafe. The refrigerated house created refreshments awaken the palette. They are piquant and paradoxically sweet. They are able to maintain the key flavor among the sweetener so well I'm convinced they don't use granulated sugar. Ginger and Bissap are my personal favorites as the others, I believe, have dairy. I will likely try the others when I have someone to save my lactose intolerant thirst. The serving sizes and costs are startling at first sight, though once you see the meal as half full (of two meals) it's not an issue. The wraps (think more schawarma) at $5 are very delicious and reasonable fare for limited pockets and appetites. They include hot crispy but soft fries in the wrap. The tang of the meat with the salt of the fries and the richness of the dressings make it a meal. The half chicken meal, that I've ordered 3 times, are the best blessed chicken halves in the D. They are tender seasoned and juicy on the inside but immaculately decorated with herbs and crispy skin on the outside. I eat more than I can typically handle. The skin is irresistible, the meat closest to the bone is delectable. Your meat is cooked fresh and hot on order. It may take a restaurants time as this is not fast food. The onions!! Try both varieties, either way you have a mid level spice with refreshing citrus and subtly sweet accouterments. The rice and couscous were full of well cultured warm spices. A must for the chicken. I have not tried the red snapper as the portions are large and I don't believe in reheating fish so I will return with a guest. There are beef and lamb options for red meat eaters as well. My ONLY critique is they don't have any vegetable sides outside of onions. I long for some root vegetables or a kachumbari salad but with meat this delightful, I will fashion my own.

Yelp
Very tasty food. Ordered the Lamb Yassa and it was fantastic!!! I would definitely recommend

Yelp
it's been on my list of places to visit since they opened, but we're never over on this side of town. I'm hoping to change that soon, because I was blown away by how good the food was here. We have familiarity with senegalese food, and have even made yassa and maffe at home before, but could not do any justice to the food here. Our server was friendly and helpful. We ordered yassa with jollof rice, maffe, and a sorrel drink, a baobob drink, and the orange ginger. We got some fataya as well. The fataya came out, red with palm oil and extra crispy, with a tomato/chili sauce that had a depth of flavor I couldn't describe. Rich, deep, earthy, but still fresh tasting, a nice contrast to the fish (tuna? tilapia?) in the fataya. The drinks are sweet, but delicious - the baobob is almost a smoothie, and the sorrel is close o a hibiscus with less bitterness. The orange ginger is also very sweet but with a great ginger kick. I did order the lamb yassa but was brought the chicken yassa. I was very hungry so I didn't ask to change it - and it looked delicious - and I am happy they gave me the chicken. Crispy on the outside, seasoned well throughout, and totally juicy. The onion sauce on the side adds a punch of umami, and the well-seasoned jollof rice as a nice medium for everything. I couldn't finish it all and ate it for lunch the next day, where it heated up beautifully and remained tasty and juicy. The maffe is very rich - lots of palm oil - we got it wih chicken. The chicken was juicy, the vegetables in there were pleasant and added to the overall flavor. I'd order it again but definitely to share, it fills you up quickly. I'm now recommending this place to everyone because I can't get over how good it was. I'm looking forward to trying the rest of the menu!

Yelp
When we arrived, Maty was on the phone and didn't see us for about 5 minutes. After we were spotted, the service was great. The food is amazing and delicious. The restaurant is small, but clean. I would definitely return.
google avatar

EL Sea D.

Yelp
Recommend the grilled fish (Snapper, in my case). Couldn't decide between rice or onions, so I had both! The onions have an amazing, unique flavor that is not to be missed. Started with Fataya, which is similar to an empanada. The hot sauce that comes with these haunts my dreams. It's an amazing scotch bonnet concoction with its own flavor. The room is very meager, with a (busy!) take-out counter, located in a strip-mall. Very casual. The owner is warm and attentive. We will be back to try the ginger juice, and have some more of that dreamy hot sauce!

Austin C.

Yelp
Basically the only worthwhile eatery in Northwest Detroit proper.

Yelp
My wife is an anthropologist who has spent a great deal of time in West Africa, so we had to go to Maty's and put their Senegalese cuisine to test. She placed the order over the phone, I picked up our feast. She had ordered a whole chicken, a whole bass fish, w sides of couscous and yellow rice. The fish and the chicken were perfectly crispy and spicy (beautifully spicy complex, not spicy hot), and the rice and the couscous were spot on (though we both preferred the rice). The element that took them both to new highs was the accompanying mustard-onion sauce; get extra. Pro-tip: pick up a citrus-ginger juice for the ride home. No, pick up three. Five stars from the Anthropologist and myself. Bon appetit.
google avatar

Vin D.

Yelp
Being that I never had Senegalese before I decided to give this place a shot. It was located well outside the city in an obsure location. The inside was small and simple yet had interesting and authentic decor. The menu offering seemed small. I ordered the lamb shanks with rice and onion sauce, and also the fatayas, which were like fried empanadas stuffed with a fish meat, that came with some red sauce with onions and I think squash. The Fatayas were very good and that sauce complemented them very well. The lamb shanks were delicious and amazingly tender. The rice was decent and the onion sauce with the rice gave it a sweet and savory flavor. While the flavor was unique I was caught off by it. It was pretty good, but it didn't blow my taste buds away. I suspect it is an acquired taste, which means I may have to rewrite the review after I finish the leftovers. The person serving the food was pretty cool. He did forget to serve me the ginger juice with pineapple, but he didn't charge me for it. I feel the price was reasonable considering how much food I got and how much leftovers I got to take with me. All in all I think it was a good dining experience and the food was decent and unique.

Yelp
Tucked away in the historic Old Redford neighborhood is a little gem of a Senegalese restaurant. Ever had Senegalese food? You should try it here. Your best bet is to ask your waiter what is cooking well that day, because sometimes they don't have everything on the menu. But we had the half chicken, lamb shanks, plantains, yellow rice and cous cous. They even brought out some complimentary jasmine tea. The chicken was crispy and charred on the outside and juicy on the inside. Delicious. The lamb shanks were spot on, too. Huge portions for both. Some days they have super hearty stews that are worth trying. You can't go wrong here.
google avatar

Tracey B.

Yelp
The red snapper dinner was delicious! The service was wonderful too! I didn't know what I wanted, except I knew I wanted fish. I was really pleased with the portion too! A few customers came in while I dined and shared the history of the food and the spices and herbs they prepare the food with. It is always nice to learn about the origins of what you put into your body. I'll be back!

Yelp
Great lamb chops at unbelievable price. Want to try more items on menu. It appears they had a partial menu or sold out of some items I wanted to try.

Yelp
Best food in Detroit, flat out. Especially when it comes to lamb, nobody can compare.

Yelp
I first heard of this place from a friend who linked me to the Cooking in America episode on this place, was dying to try it, and finally got the chance to do so! We came for lunch at 1:00pm on a quiet Tuesday and parked in a lot nearby. The restaurant interior was African-themed with only 6 tables and a restroom in the back of the kitchen. It was indeed interesting when they gave us bottled water when we asked for water (more on that later). Since I had heard about how great their chicken was, I ordered a $13.99 1/2 Chicken Yassa plate, which came with half of a chicken in two pieces, some onions covered in some type of mustard sauce, and yellow rice with a slice of green pepper on top. The chicken was pretty good! The skin was quite tasty, and the smaller piece of the chicken was juicier than the larger piece of the chicken, which was a little dry in the middle. I wasn't a big fan of the onions covered in the mustard sauce, but the yellow rice paired extremely well with the chicken and green pepper. At the end of the meal, we paid at the front and my bill came out to be $15.90, which was higher than the advertised $13.99 plus Michigan's 6% tax, but it turns out they charged us for the bottle water! I was fine with it though and ultimately left feeling satisfied and happy that I got to try the place out. If you're looking for some hit-the-spot African chicken and rice in Detroit, you can't go wrong with Maty's!
google avatar

Niko L.

Yelp
Super good! The lamb is good with Djollof rice. Very flavorful and a really generous serving size. The owners are really nice too!

Nicole L.

Yelp
Love Maty's!!!! Their fish yassa is everything... along with the ginger juice if you get there early enough before it sells out. We have been there multiple times and everything so flavorful.

Yelp
Whole red snapper, plantains, rice etc EXCELLENT!!! The location seems sketchy but it's actually safe.

Alexis D.

Yelp
The food was decent but the service was horrible and I do mean horrible. No one greeted us. We seated ourselves. The chicken was still raw on the inside and it was just picked right up off the plate with a fork rather than taking the whole plate away. Every time we had a question we had to get up out of our seats to ask. When we were finished eating we had to get up and walk over to the counter to announce it and get containers. Nobody walked over to check on us throughout the time we were there. When we paid we were told there was no change and asked if it were ok that they owed us 57 cent. I still left a tip but I don't plan to return. As a matter of fact, we were trying this out b/c we wanted to get food catered for our Christmas Eve dinner. We ended up going with another place instead. It sucks b/c I'd heard so many good things abt this place.
google avatar

Oleta J.

Yelp
This place is amazing! The service is great & the food is even better. We got both the chicken yassa & the tilapia to share with jollof rice & yellow rice. Everything was delicious. Every bite of food was seasoned to perfection. The chicken was falling off the bone. It was stressful trying to comprehend how I've gone my whole life without this experience. You will not regret coming here. If you look at the food & think, "Wow, that looks delicious!" I have to tell you it's at least 10x better. No lie. My life is forever changed & I will certainly be back.
google avatar

Kirby C.

Yelp
Definitely new top 5 in the city. I got the red snapper, rice & plantains with bissap to drink. The fish was so good I kept going back and forth between eating it all there and trying to save some for later. Everything was so delicious I actually ended up picking out something else off the menu (the fish fataya, which also turned out to be bomb -- the hot sauce that comes with it is what takes it to the next level) to take home and try later on after I was finished eating. 100% recommend to anybody looking for amazing food that's a little different, but still gives you that comforting/familiar feel.

Anum N.

Yelp
Djollof rice was the highlight!! Plaintains were nice and crunchy n soft at the same time, perfection! The half chicken was delicious!! The leg was softer than the breast for obvious reasons but it was still pretty flavourful! The red Snapper was super delicious fried to perfection. Also the boabab juice was unique and very good!! Must try!!!
google avatar

Natalie N.

Yelp
We ordered the whole chicken, the spices and the char taste was like no other. The fataya and the hot sauce was also incredible. They were very kind and brought us extra sauce. We will be back. I loved it.
google avatar

Lia G.

Yelp
I saw a video on Facebook about this place and because I'm dedicated to the foodie life I traveled out of state for this restaurant. It was all the way worth it. I'm not Senegalese but everything I had seemed not only authentic but made as if big momma was in the kitchen. The Yassa alone was so good!!! The lamb, the chicken, man everything. I plan for the fish next time and more Yassa!!! Go bless your belly with this because it's so good. Literally food for the soul!!
google avatar

Phai O.

Yelp
My first time here I phoned in a carry out order for the 1/2 chicken yassa and decided to get a ginger juice while I was there. I pay for my food (16 and some change) and the owner ran out of singles and gave me more money instead of paying me in change and he didn't have to do that so that's another reason why I'm giving 5 stars because I can't think of any other restaurants that would do something like that so customer service was great on top of very friendly. Now the food, omg chicken was seasoned perfect and was so juicy I took a chuck out before I took the picture (i couldn't help it) yellow rice was good and so were the side of onion sauce. The ginger orange juice was so fresh you can taste the freshness of the ginger in it. I will try the fish next time because it was a debate on that or chicken and my fiance is picky and wanted to try so I went with chicken and he couldn't stop talking about how good it was and he would eat here and that's saying a lot because he is very picky. Great food, great customer service, reasonable prices so you can't ask for much else. I will probably fit this into my list of frequent places I'll visit. I love supporting local mom's & pop's places like this especially with good food and you wouldn't be disappointed if you checked this place out.
google avatar

Tim B.

Yelp
We ordered the whole chicken and the red snapper dinners. The food is highly seasoned. You get large portions. The food is cooked upon request so you will wait maybe 10-15 mins. Everything on the menu was available. The place is nice and clean. There are 6 tables to eat in. We are very pleased with our food and service. We will come back!!!

Niecey S.

Yelp
This spot is serving good food! I had the lamb with jollof rice and fried plantain and it blew me away! I would recommend this spot for sure. I ordered for a carry out and my food was fresh and hot and very reasonably timed! The plantains were sweet and the onion mustard sauce was out of this world, the perfect touch to the tender lamb meat. I'll be back!

Yelp
Just got done with lunch and it was an interesting experience. The interior had probably 6 tables small, not much to it. Had to use the restroom went to lift up the toilet seat it fell off. Then went to throw the paper towel away and the top of the trash can fell off. The place could use some TLC to say the least. Interior/Ambiance 1.5/5 Food ordered a Grilled Chicken with Onions. Had a good flavor it came with yellow rice, nice portion. Food 3.7/5 Service was fine people seemed nice but I was given a bottle of water when I sat down I didn't order it and was still charged $2.00 for it. Service 3/5 Value wasn't that great $20.00 with tip for lunch is fine if everything is awesome but it fell short of that. Value 2.5/5 So overall the place offers a unique flavor that you can't get many places it just has some shortcomings that I don't know if I could look past to try again. If I ever did it would be carryout.

Yelp
I had heard great things about this place and the food was delicious. My party of 3 ordered various entrees to share. We started with the Fataya, which are like empanadas, or fried dumplings. They let us get 2 beef and 2 chicken. The beef was spicy but not overwhelming. Both were delicious and crunchy, and the accompanying sauce was wonderful. The chicken yassa was hands down our favorite dish. We got the whole chicken but only needed half. It's fried chicken (no batter) which is flavored wonderfully and finished on the grill. It comes with onion testty (sooo good - a warm mustard-based onion sauce/condiment) and a cold onion accompaniment that was also delicious and spicy. For the fish yassa we had a choice between tilapia (no thanks) and red snapper (yes!). It was served whole - crispy, savory and delicious. I ate some of the crispy skin - wonderful! It comes with the same onion condiments that the chicken did. We also had the grilled lamb shanks - meeschwee. Two large shanks- easily enough for two. While tasty, ours was quite dry but palatable when the onion testty was added. It was recommended by the server, but I prefer my lamb shanks to be braised, not grilled. While not terrible, I would not order this again. We got a side with each entree, so we tried three. All were tinted yellow, presumably from saffron. The rice definitely had saffron and it was fabulous and moist. Our favorite! The vermicelle (short noodles)was also yummy. The flavor of the couscous was slightly lacking and it was also dry. This was disappointing because we had high expectations since it is a North African grain. However, the unexpectedly awesome rice more than satisfied. Side portions were generous. We also had a side of plantains - fried, dry (over cooked, possibly not yet ripe) but sweet and tasty nonetheless. It was nice to have a bite of plantains almost as a palate cleanser between various entrees (like a bite of ginger between various sushi rolls.) Beverages are canned soda and bottled water. They need to work on that. They were also out of regular coke. Decor - pretty African fabrics on the tables, protected by thick, gaudy plastic. I understand why, but the plastic felt slimy. Speaking of slime, I almost bit the dust after sliding on the greasy (not wet) tile floor. That is a lawsuit waiting to happen! New floor or more frequent cleaning needed. The mirrored wall next to me had wipe marks all over it, like it had been hastily cleaned with a dirty rag. Yuk! Our server was patient, attentive and friendly. She thoroughly answered all of our questions. We had to ask for plates, and the silverware was mismatched and not the best quality. Functional but not fancy. The place has a dive feel and that is why I give it 3 Stars. The food is 4-5 Stars. I live 1/2-hour away so too far for takeout. Having said that, I will definitely go back and highly recommend it. Just don't expect a fancy dining experience.

Yelp
Their Tilapia meal is very delicious. I would highly recommend it! It pairs well with a side of jollof rice and plantains. I wouldn't recommend the bisop drink as it's very sweet.

Yelp
Maty's is an excellent restaurant for African (Senegalese) cuisine. It adds to the food diversity of Detroit, and for the city proper in particular. The restaurant is a small storefront location on Grand River near McNichols and nearby the Meijer shopping plaza. The menu is a large laminated card describing the dishes available. There are roughly 10 tables available for dine-in, though all dishes are available for carry-out. I tried the chicken dish, which had three chicken legs and a thigh, combined with yellow rice and an onion-based gravy. The dish was well prepared and tasty. The spices were distinct, but it was not "spicy hot", it was very enjoyable. The servers were responsive. I took a sip of a ginger juice, which was very nice, but I settled for a Diet Coke and water as my beverages. On my visit they had run out of other traditional soft drinks, I suspect that they would mostly include Coke products. Also on the menu are other Senegal-based juice drinks and smoothies. The clientele who were at this restaurant was very ethnically diverse.

Yelp
I heard about this place from a video someone posted on Facebook, the food looked so good so a few months later here I am! I ordered the red snapper " poisson braises" so good! It came with yellow rice and some onion in this sauce not sure what it was called but me and my five year old loved it. This place is a gem!

Yelp
Decided to try Senegalese cuisine and I ended up here . Amazing food and good service . I had the chicken ,onion sauce and a side of yellow rice with a ginger juice to complement it . Chicken was really tender and marinated with some amazing spices . The onion sauce had the right level of spice to it too ! 10/10 would recommend it !
