Wow, what a find! We stumbled upon this restaurant very randomly, enticed by the cozy atmosphere and the short, handwritten menu posted out front. We took a chance and boy, were we rewarded.
At 61 years old I’ve eaten in a lot of restaurants, so many of them just average and so few the rare gems one always hopes to find. Mauby is one of those gems.
The perfectly cooked dishes. The creative balance of flavours that enhance, complement and never overpower. The reasonable prices. Honest prices for honest food. The friendly and attentive waitstaff. The chill soundtrack.
My companion had the Mauby Beef Short Rib, made with free-range beef that just flaked perfectly off the bone, seasoned with red wine, spices, molasses and dried fruit. Only £13 — an absolute bargain.
I had the Puy Lentils & Aubergine, the aubergine glazed with pomegranate molasses, placed on top of a bed of green herb creama and lentils mixed with harissa, sundried tomato, and capers. Only £12.
For sides we had green beans grilled in garlic oil and lemon, crisp and rustic, only £6. Crispy potatoes were roasted chunks, flaky and soft, not overcooked nor over-oiled, again £6.
I had the Cornish Gin Fizz cocktail, made with Tarquin’s Cornish Gin, blood orange soda and fresh orange, £12.
Finally for desert I had the Halva Chocolate Dates, three jammy medjool dates, stuffed with pistachio halva, dark chocolate and sesame. Only £8.
As a bonus, the entire menu is gluten free.
We were in the area to look for a flat for my son, and I hope he chooses the flat we visited — if only so I can have an excuse to go back to this restaurant again.
