Maude

I will not be returning to this salon. I have been a regular client for haircuts here for several years. During my last haircut with my previous stylist, I discussed wanting highlights in the future and reviewed my hair history and goals. She told me notes were added to my client profile so I could book highlights later without needing a separate consultation. That stylist has since left the salon. I later booked a “Total Highlights” service through the salon’s online booking system. At no point during booking was I informed that a consultation was required, nor did I receive any call or message from the salon requesting that my hair be evaluated in advance or to confirm whether highlights would be feasible. At the appointment, the stylist repeatedly stated that the way I booked the service was incorrect and that my hair should have been seen beforehand. A strand test was performed and processed for 15 minutes. Based on this short test, the stylist concluded that my hair had not lifted at all and stated that highlights were not possible. I was told that because my hair had been box dyed (last applied about two months ago), I would need to schedule multiple color-stripping shampoo treatments before color could even be considered. This conclusion was made without allowing the strand test to reach full processing time or discussing alternative approaches. I asked whether I could at least have the first color-stripping shampoo done that same day. I was initially told yes, and then told no, with the explanation that it is a full process and that I needed to “book correctly.” I was not given guidance on how many treatments would be required, how long the process would take, or what steps to follow before returning. No clear plan or path forward was provided. I left without receiving any service. Based on the lack of advance communication, the minimal strand test, and the absence of a proper consultation or clear guidance, I would not recommend this salon for color services, particularly for clients with previously dyed hair.

Love my hair stylist, Nini Huynh! Always does an impeccable job, no matter the length or style I'm going for. I actually moved to Annandale but still drive back to Herndon to get my hair cut by Nini. She's like an old friend at this point. Highly recommend.

I have been coming to this salon for close to two decades, and the care and treatment I have received is nothing short of spectacular! The entire staff makes sure to welcome you and hype you up, and the stylists are extremely talented and know what they are doing. I’d especially like to recognize Charity, who has consistently made time to make me feel beautiful and confident with her dedication and clear communication. Love this place and I will forever recommend them!

I have been a Maude customer for decades. I was drawn to the salon - its hip design and welcome atmosphere, and then hooked as I developed my relationship with stylists that met my need and budget over the years. As important to me was learning of the owners' commitment to community service (providing haircuts for individuals at the shelter, "No Mother Left Behind" drives recognizing the vulnerability and resilience of single mothers and caretakers. Finally, Maude's commitment to in-house training and certification so that their stylists can grow and earn a living wage in this area sealed the deal. Maude is not a salon-it's community.

Is anyone able to get in touch with someone at the front desk at this salon? I am a former client trying to schedule an appointment. I have called eight times, left two voicemails and a text message as instructed on their outgoing message. I have yet to hear back from anyone. I just want to schedule an appointment.

I thought I would receive a professional cut and color from a professional hair stylist. What I ended up with was a mess. My hair was cut unevenly and the color varied on all sides of my head. If you don’t want to spend a fortune for an unprofessional experience, go somewhere else that treats you with the respect you deserve for their outrageous prices.

Gabi did a wonderful job on my haircut today. I came in with a tangled mess and asked for a "Ramona flowers" style, and she certainly delivered! The atmosphere is cozy, the staff friendly, easy location. I certainly recommend Maude, especially if you like fun hairstyles.

Best salon in the area, been a client for 16+ years. You couldn't find a more knowledgeable and helpful set of professionals anywhere close!

Elam is just outstanding! I have fine, thin, hair and she took the time to be aware of my super thinning areas and discussed the cut i wanted. She was great to chat with and she is just the best for my short hairstyle. I love the cut and when I washed it and styled it the following day my hair went rite to the style. I started going to Maude quite a few years ago. My first experience ended with green hair. I got in touch with, I think, a manager. Fortunately they are open on Sunday and my hair color(which was corrected for free) was so beautiful I paid the woman working on my hair to cut it. Fast forward to 2024. The receptionist , who had always been friendly and customer service oriented, was not the same woman and was rude beyond compare. When I walked into the studio where the hairdressers are, they all looked like they wanted to be anywhere else but at Maude. My haircuts throughout the years were hit and miss. Some great, some far less than good. I also never knew how much I was going to be charged. I started dreaded going about a year before my last appointment. I finally looked up the profile on their site and saw my hairdresser cut hair based on the mood she was in. That alone explained everything to me. My final appointment was uncomfortable, far less than acceptable and the color was dull. My advice is go somewhere else. I had high hopes in the beginning and ended up feeling taken advantage of by the end. Don't bet that on the day you go, it will be a satisfactory (at best) experience.

Had 2 nightmare racist classist encounters, and several good hair encounters. They may balance out if you ignore cultural appropriation. After trying a few different stylists, would not go back. Gave one stylist several changes but she overprocessed and burned hair off. Another was petty, mean, gossipy, and several don't like each other and talk about each other while your sitting there. I had some good experiences at color and style. It's really a gamble. If you have time, patience there is free street parking.

Thank goodness for Maude! After several years of bad cuts and bad color, a friend recommended Maude. Thank goodness. Now my hair always looks good!! Seriously!! Pretty much always. It even grows out well. I trust them with my hair - it would take a lot to get me to go somewhere else.

okay if anyone reading this has thick hair (especially if it's thick and long and weighing you down and also everytime you go somewhere they make the shocked face of kh you have so much hair) Elam at Maude is a godsend. I've been to her twice in two years because I usually grow my hair out and each time it has grown out beautifully, she takes her time and makes sure that your hair is well taken care of and shaped. I'm writing this review three weeks after getting five inches off and I'm even more in love with the cut than when I left the salon. I know haircuts are pricey but at the very least you know your money is going to someone who is good at that craft and cares!

Love this place! I started going again last year and don't remember why I ever stopped! Due to my poor planning with my own schedule my last several cuts have been with different gals, but have been equally amazing. There is a lot of talent at this salon. Also, I love that they have a retro vibe with their decor. It makes it feel like more of an experience as opposed to a boring old haircut. Special shout outs to Elam and Courtney - they are amazing!

Service depends on the stylist you get. I went in to cover up my grey hair with a Demi permanent medium brown shade and ended up with it almost black with a green tinge. I was told it would 'wash out' next time I shampooed. I shampooed that evening. The green tinge didn't wash out for over a month. I ended up having to go elsewhere to correct the color. I was kinda offput that the salon techs talked about witchcraft and new age, which is fine if that's your thing, but not everyone cares for it.

Called to get an appointment. Despite having a man's haircut that I chose out of a man's magazine, (undercut, and short), they said they'd charge me the full price for it (despite being a "man's" haircut) just because I am a woman - a 62% upcharge for having a hoo-ha. Yay! I expect this blind adherence to presenting gender from corporate salons but was disappointed to hear that was also the policy for Maude. I've been trying to find a barber I like for a couple of years now and figured a salon that also did men's cuts might work even if it was a bit more expensive. Alas, hair doesn't matter as much to Maude as what's between my legs. I guess it's a money thing. I mean, women kinda expect getting screwed at this point with the pink tax. 2 stars though because the lady on the phone was nice. Obviously flustered at having to answer those questions and couldn't give any reason why other than it's store policy "at this time," but nice.

Cute salon, staff is very welcoming, and Nini (stylist) was fantastic! I have super thick Asian hair - been wearing it in a mom bun for far too long. I wanted to chop it off, but wanted some input on what would be the most flattering. Short bob? Angled bob? Longer bob? Flat ironed or curled? Nini was super supportive and gave me some great recommendations. I will definitely be coming back again!

Had my hair bleached platinum by Celeste a few months ago. Was seeing her for a little while, all was well just pricey but she's very good at what she does. Since I'm a student and have to pay for my hair myself I started seeing kristina (only 1 level down). First time she worked on my hair the bleach dried (I believe) but it stopped working and left my roots a dark yellow. It wasn't as noticeable to me at first (looking back at photos, a professional would've been able to notice the color difference) but when a few days later when the toner faded (after 1 wash) my roots looked terrible and was only fixable through further bleaching. I called to explain and was given a credit to come back for my next touch up since I live in Richmond for college and wasn't able to come home immediately to fix my hair. So when I go in for my second touch up a few weeks later, the same thing happens, not as dramatic but still clearly noticeable and since I don't know how to bleach myself I couldn't fix it. Really unacceptable considering I'm paying for a master crafter and it happened on multiple occasions. Very upsetting, I don't see myself returning.

The first time I went to this salon, my haircut was done by Nghi. She was fine in under 10 minutes, my haircut was just fine. The second time I went, I did not want to wait for two weeks and said I'd go with anyone. I had to say twice I want it shorter. It took an hour. I came home and saw that the hair on one side is about half an inch shorter than on the other. Not in front but looking from the back. That is why I did not notice in the salon. Called back, asked for another stylist to fix this. Went two days later. The stylist took an hour, kept saying how difficult my hair is to cut (no idea what she was talking about - my hair is fine and there is not much of it, never had any other stylist say it was difficult). She kept "straightening it out". When she was done, my hair was shorter than I wanted with no shape to it whatsoever. I did not say anything because at that point I just wanted to leave. I have never had worse haircut in my life, my family said I looked hideous, my daughter compared me to a mushroom. No shape, whatever this is is the opposite of complementing my face. I will just have to wait till it grows out a bit and go elsewhere to get it fixed. Two stars because Nghi was good.

Disappointed. Made an appointment and they wanted my credit card information before even stepping into the salon. This would have been my first time there and they are already asking for personal information. Their policy is 48 hour cancellation notice. On the day of my appointment, they cancelled my appointment without notice. They wanted me to reschedule for the following week. My time is just as valuable.

This used to be my go-to for salons, I was always satisfied with the service I received. Now I can't even get an appointment, they updated their system so now they won't even consider you until you fill out an online consultation form, requiring pictures of all sides of your head and a sample of what you would like your hair to look like. This is tedious of a hair appointment but not enough to never go back. The closer was after I filled it out and submitted it I never heard back! I called them twice and they said they had openings and received my submission but continued to never get back to me. I'm the end I never heard from them and I'm incredibly disappointed and surprised by the lack of service I received.

Good luck getting an appointment - for whatever reason they don't do In person consults for color which is silly because nobody's hair color looks accurate in a photo; they rarely have availability, refuse to do hair washes without full (expensive) blowouts regardless of if you need or want one, etc etc. I mean Jesus Christ. Way to ward off every prospective client! I hope they change their rigid policies.

I recently returned to this salon after a hiatus and I couldn't be happier that I'm back! Issys has been doing my hair since August and I found my hairdresser soulmate. She is very warm, welcoming, and makes you feel special while you're in her chair. She is phenomenal at colors! From funky, crazy colors to blonde and brunette (and more!). Issys even cuts my husband's hair! Other great stylists I recommend are Courtney, Mad, Alexis, and Tina. I love coming here knowing I'm in good hands, complete with a glass of wine!

I've been to this place few times and it is my favorite place for hair cut. I hope the pictures justify my feelings... But even if they don't I would definitely recommend you to give this salon a chance. I'm sure they wouldn't let you down. There's only one way. Go up... Thanks guys for the hair cut... I've always enjoyed and felt pretty leaving the salon.. will come back again in couple of months...

One of the best hair salons in Northern Virginia, my family has been coming here for the past 15 years without ever deviating. The employees truly create a sense of community that has each customer looking forward to the next visit, and of course, they do tremendous work on your hair! A place for both men and women, Maude does all the types of styling, dying, trimming, and whatever else you're looking for. The stylists are always there to hear what you want while offering their opinions as well. We have been mostly going to Celeste, and she is a both a tremendous friend and stylist. Every visit is an enjoyable experience, and they'll offer you complementary drinks like coffee/water/sodas etc. as well with each visit.

First time client and I love this salon. I'm so picky about my highlights and I'm so happy to have found this place! I had Mad as my stylist and she was so sweet. Before we got started she took the time to sit and talk to me about what I wanted my hair to look like, what I've liked and didn't like in the past and truly made me feel valued as a customer. I did partial foil and it cost exactly what their website said it would, AND you can put the tip on your card (such a small thing but gosh that is just so much easier). The salon itself is more of a cozy house feel than your typical sleek salon. It was very clean and tidy. Everyone was so nice. Loved my blonde highlights, I'll definitely be back!

I have been coming here for at least 4 years at this point and around 92% of my visits have been overwhelmingly positive. I started seeing an ace crafter, then moved up to a Master crafter- I have never really noticed the difference in terms of cut or color quality, however 'Masters' really do the best job in seeing your vision and executing on it. I highly recommend Shawn or Kristina. I really like this salon as it has ample parking usually and they service tons of tea, coffee, and even beer/wine! The vibe is so trendy and everyone you cross paths with is chatty and kind. It is often worth the price and like I said, even the one time I did have to go back because the initial color faded, I was given a complimentary touch up without any complaining or rudeness from the stylist (for free also). Biggest "pain" is that they only take cash tips now (or Venmo!) so keep that in mind!

I love Maude. They do great work. Every time no matter who you go to. I jump around and am generally inconsistent so I've been to many of their stylists over the years at various price points - honestly all good. More senior is better but even their rookies are great and work closely with more senior staff (and you can get a great price!). The vibe is chic and funky. They have wine, beer, coffee, etc available. Staff is knowledgeable and professional. It's a locally owned, woman owned business so love coming here vs a chain. I've never had a bad experience and I've been coming here off and on for like 8 years. Highly recommend!

I've had two haircuts with Vanessa. The first cut was a great cut and I got a lot of compliments, but not quite my ideal haircut. That was not her fault--I really wasn't sure what I was looking for. When I want back, I told her what I liked and didn't like about the haircut, and she gave me a haircut I totally love. I have gotten so many compliments on my haircut. She told me how to style it, and it is easy to do. The cut has looked good at all stages from the first day to six weeks later.

LOVE! LOVE! I came across this salon because they were recently on social media for defending ALL people and they stood up and were not complicit in current events around racism! I wanted to support local business, support and thank them for advocating for ALL. I called and made an appointment and explained I have a tight schedule with my job, they got me in within a week of the call. COURTNEY was who I was set with and she was amazing!!! She is a great person, has a great story, and took great care of me!! I was so thankful and personally touched by her care and compassion for me and what I do for a living. She was just amazing and I left feeling great about my hair! She did an amazing job, listened to my needs and goals for my hair and completely met my expectations!! Please support local business and I fully recommend Courtney!

I made a big mistake and thought I could dye my hair a platinum blond and I turned it orange. Issys was a lifesaver. My hair is now beautiful and perfect. And she was very friendly and understanding with my problem. Best stylist ever and she now has me forever. Been looking for a stylist for years. I've ended my search.

I've always had a good experience at Maude, but my most recent visit has been the best by far. As someone with curly hair, it's rare to find a stylist who knows how to handle it. Camryn was by far the best stylist I've ever had at any salon. She knew exactly what to do to my hair and was extremely knowledgable about all things curls (it helps when your stylist also has curly hair). I was so confident in her ability that I told her to do what she thought was best (I had a cut, wash, and style). I left feeling so much better about my hair, and even managed to snag a few styling tips from her as well. Maude is always full of kind and enthusiastic stylists, but Camryn went above and beyond. I think I've maybe written two reviews in my entire 25 years of life, but the service I received from Camryn was so exceptional that I just had to share--especially for my fellow curly-haired girls! I can't wait for my next visit with her!

Follow up from Review of February 4, 2018: Staying true to form, the response I received from the 3rd owner of Maude, Celeste, was surprisingly rude and lacking business sense as well. After the inconvenience and the excuse for the inconvenience, I wanted to cancel the appointment; however, before I did, I received a response from Celeste who conveyed, "...customer service was not up to our standards." I am however, confused why you have an upcoming appointment still scheduled with my partner Tina? Based on the length and content of your review, I think it would be better if we cancel your appointment. I am sure you understand. We wish you all the best in your hair journey!" I believe that any other business owner would at least make an attempt to try to sway or change a person's negative experience into a positive experience in one way or another by asking for a second chance to make things right or at least better. Even on yelp, the reviewer possesses the ability to update, change, and delete a negative review into something more positive or a provide a better review, given that it is justified.

What can I say -- I absolutely ADORE Maude!! Such a fun, unique, funky, modern salon. Celeste is amazing!!

Had Elam as my stylist -- she was so warm and personable! It was so comfortable getting my hair done with her that I almost didn't want to leave. Would absolutely recommend!

So... I'm a hair-slut...I jump around from salon to salon on a quest to find the perfect salon and stylist within a limited budget (thanks, economy). I've been to PR at Partners (in Reston, Shirlington, Chantilly, and Manassas), Bubbles, Salon Fusion (in Sterling/Regal Plaza) to name a few. I thought I was golden at the last salon - I always walked out saying "Damn, my hair looks frickin' awesome!" But my pockets ($$$) thought otherwise. I needed to start my journey again -- Find an urban-esque salon out in suburbia. Thanks to Yelp, I did! MAUDE! The location is great - historic Herndon. The salon is artsy and funky. You walk in and feel like you are downtown. Their tagline is "as urban as you can get in the suburbs!" and that really fits this place. Making an appointment at MAUDE was fast and easy - everything was online. The prices are hard-to-beat. My haircut and highlight were exactly the same price as quoted on the web... how often does that happen? :) I chose Nikki as my stylist - she did an amazing job! She consulted with me to figure out exactly what I wanted and made it happen. I couldn't be happier! I'm extremely happy with MAUDE and will return. I will be referring friends (and strangers, as I've already been asked where I get my hair done). Could this be it? Have I found my match? :)

I don't get this whole "not your mother's salon" thing. I'm not sure what other people's moms are like, but mine has some personality, and so does Maude. For some reason my previous review doesn't show up, so here's the remix. I just saw Kristin yesterday for my partial and cut. And as every other time I've gone to see her, I've left extremely happy with my hair. This time though, my roommate (who just moved here) came with to get her hair cut. She left Maude seconding all my raves and reviews of this place and of Kristin and Elizabeth, Kristin's assistant, who helped finish up my color, and wash it out. They both rock. I hadn't seen Kristin since June (!) due to various different factors - moving from VA to DC, job, traveling, time, etc. and was in desperate need of color and cut. It's one of the greatest feelings ever, to walk in to a place, see your stylist, have her take a look at your hair, suggest something, and completely trust her in the fact that whatever she plans to do, is going to look great. That can't be easy for someone who probably sees tons of people with different quirks and qualms about their hair. I am no different. Before Maude, I used to get that weird -butterflies in your stomach - feeling I get when I'm about to speak in public. Now, I get to go relax, flip through some magazines, drink a glass of wine, and yap about the latest and the greatest, never having to worry about what's going on with my hair. After we left Maude, we stopped over at a friends house and when we walked in, the guys in the room actually took notice to our hair complimented us. Weird? Yes. Awesome? Totally. The guys may make fun of us for driving from DC to Herndon to get our hair done, but it's a small price to pay to feel fantastic about your hair.

This is an awkward review because I've been to Maude's several times since my first review and liked both my stylist and the salon enough to continue coming back. However, for whatever reason this was just a very bad visit. Let me start by saying that Claire, my stylist, is just a nice gal and I mean her no harm by writing this. I've been to see her about 4 times now and this is the first time that I encountered a problem. She is always pleasant, professional, and I do still recommend her...with a caveat or two. Basically I say KNOW what you want...and be clear about it. I went in for highlights but for some reason now have super blond ends with darker roots. And i was very clear that i wanted the highlights on the roots touched up. The bangs are way too short...though i will say that when they grow in I expect i will like them quite a bit. she did give me a good haircut. Just too short. The color, unfortunately, was a mess. The real problem that I have, and the reason i just will not return, is when I called to let the salon know of my dissatisfaction...i was not exactly treated they way I hoped. The gal who answered my call was sympathetic and let me know the owner or manager would call me back. And she did, but I think i offended her with my lack of glowing response regarding this last visit. I remember being totally tacken aback when she said, "i have not even heard claire's side to this." It was just a bad color job...as she said....it happens. How is there "a side" to a bad? Was she thinking I had asked to have my hair fried? Furthermore, what really struck me as a concern was her informing me that Maude's is a learning salon. which is startling because I do not recall *ever* hearing or reading about this particular attribute. They offered to correct my color...or rather...to look at it, then decide if they would correct it. However, after a miserable weekend with it I just decided that I would make an appointment with a place in Bethesda that I've known for a decade and a half. I'd rather drive to MD from NOVA than put my hair in the hands of someone who is still learing. Sorry Maude's. I just needede to be honest about the experience.

Like funky hair? This place is for you. From the purple ceiling to the black and white stripes, Maude screams funk. Yes they do regular hair cut and highlights too. But it takes a special kind of stylist to do the out of the ordinary hair. Which brings me to Val. Val is my stylist and she is fantastic. She is the only one I'll trust with such a task of the rainbow highlights or humbro coloring. She has taken me from plain brunette to intriguing color for over a year. What I like best is that she is patient and honest. If something could look better she make recommendations so that you will get the look you want. Another perk about getting your hair done at this salon is you can to relax with a cup of coffee or glass of wine while you are getting all dolled up. They really know how to treat a lady.

This is an AWESOME salon. I've been going there for years and recently, my stylist moved and I became heart broken. I tried other salons and found myself lacking the quality I wanted, so I put my big girl panties on and scheduled an appointment with the first person they had available. I was given a gal named Issys and immediately found myself in love with stylist techniques--bonus is that she is also fun to talk to. I've always been picky about who does my hair, but I was amazed and happy with her care that she gave me. She took extra steps, as I was her last client of the day and told her not to worry about styling or blow drying so she could go home. She didn't miss a beat and said while she was starving, she wanted to give me the quality I deserved. I'll definitely be back to see her!

Lauren did a fabulous job shaping up the mess on my head from a bad cut I had elsewhere months ago! We sat and discussed it a bit, and she really listened to what I was looking for! On top of being a fabulous hair dresser, she is super friendly - making the whole experience that much more enjoyable! I'll be back to visit soon!

Vanessa has been doing my hair for a quite a few years now. I've never been disappointed. She knows I am not someone who will be coming every 6 weeks for touch up cuts or color so she always makes sure to give me highlights that will look good growing out and a cut that won't need constant maintenance! I've recently started bringing my 6 year old daughter here. She's seen both Nikki and Kristina and loved them both. Recently one of the assistants was kind enough to give her some cute, subtle pink highlights when she came with me. We didn't even have an appointment for her but Vanessa found someone to do it. As if all this wasn't enough, I have to admit that I love supporting a small, female owned and operated business in historic downtown Herndon!

I'm surprised by the negative reviews due to staff attitude! I got my hair cut and highlighted but Claire and she could not have been sweeter. She actually talked to me about my hair and gave some suggestions but wasn't pushy about it. I also loved how she told me about everything that she was doing to or putting in my hair. When she was finished my highlights didn't have that overdone too bright thing going on, it just looked like a natural boost. I never walk out of a salon really happy with my hair and this time I was! It was $120 for everything. I booked online and it worked perfectly. Another thing, what other salon has a cheese/fruit tray with baguette slices and crackers?!?!? That's reason enough for me to go back ;)

I've been here twice and both times I was beyond impressed. The interior is just so adorable, and I love everything about it. My first time, I got highlights and a cut by Vanessa. She was amazing, she knew exactly what to do with my over-colored/over-processed mess of hair. She made me feel so pretty after having my first baby. She was extremely friendly, and gave me lots of great advice on a good cut/color for me, and also how to maintain it. I also got a glass of white wine while I got pampered. Much needed. Second time there I just got a cut by Tina. She was also super friendly. I just wanted to trim off the dead ends, but keep the same cut. She did exactly what I wanted! Some hair stylists don't know the meaning of "trim". And then she gave my hair a nice little curl and recommended a conditioning treatment that I still use. Both of them are their "seasoned crafters" (so most experienced), so they are very pricey. But when it comes to my hair, it's worth it to pay a little extra. I suggest if you're just getting a trim, maybe try out someone else to save some money. But when it comes to a new cut and color, they're the way to go. (Not sure how Tina is with color, but I'm sure she's just as good. But from experience, Vanessa did exactly what I wanted!) They are my go-to hair salon now :)

I came to the area last year and have tried several salons unsuccessfully. So I took the recommendation of a friend and started going to Maude's in January 2009. Like others have said it's a cute place and has an eclectic funky feel. The receptionists were always nice to me and I got the feeling they have a lot of happy loyal customers. I don't know about the glasses of wine someone mentioned, I was never offered a drink. My friend recommended Catina, who she has been very happy with for years, but I ended up with Kristin. When I came in I was growing out a bad hair cut. Before I saw Kristin I had my hair washed by an assistant. Honestly the hair sinks are the most uncomfortable I've ever experienced because I was pushed into a recline that was killing my neck, but I'm tall so it may not be a common complaint. That didn't last long though and I was into the chair. Kristin was very nice and listened to me tell her about my previous botched haircut, which had been only minimally repaired. I also told her that I don't style my hair, I don't generally use product, and I don't generally blow dry. When I was done she told me what she planned to do with my hair, and honestly I felt like she hadn't been listening to a word I said. So I started to tell her again that I wanted a low maintenance haircut that would reduce the volume of my hair. She got really defensive and an attitude with me. But we talked some more and she said, okay., I think I can give you what you want but this will take two haircuts for all of the corrections. Fine. So she cut my hair and seemed to do a fine job. It looked great in the salon, but never styled well for me at home. Seven weeks later I went back and she was again thoroughly unimpressed with my hair. I reminded her about the previous bad hair cut. So she cut my hair, said she thought that everything had been corrected and again, it looked great in the salon. But once at home, the cut seemed to add more volume to my hair at the bottom, exactly what I was trying to avoid. ("Bell head", as she called it.) I went a third time to give her a fair chance. Again she said she could get rid of my "bell head". I almost laughed when I reminded her that she had been the one to cut it the last two times. This time she finally remembered the bad haircut and said, yeah, but you had a bad haircut to fix! I didn't remind her that it was supposed to be fixed after the last visit but I told her that I just wanted a low maintenance haircut. She sort of laughed at me and told me that I couldn't have a nice hairstyle without blow drying my hair and using product. Once again, the haircut looked good with a blowout and lots of product, but at home I had a lot of added weight at the bottom. I was trying to find a new stylist but I got desperate before a long business trip in early July and went back to Maude's where I saw Claire. She was a real sweetheart and I had a good time talking to her. So good I forgot to tell her that I don't part my hair down the middle and didn't realize it had been cut that way until she was done styling it. It was also longer on one side, but I was gone for three weeks before I was back in the States so I never got it fixed. To be fair, maybe Kristin isn't used to cutting hair for people who don't style their hair everyday. She does get little sparks of open attitude if you question her, but is otherwise nice. If you wanted a change but didn't know what you wanted, and like to style your hair on a daily basis, she might be good. But I've never styled my hair and have just about always had more flattering cuts. Overall, I don't think I'll go back to Maude's, but I won't rule it out. I still haven't found a salon and stylist that I like in Reston, but I'll keep looking!

Had a great cut from Maude hair salon! I don't remember the name of my stylist but she is a great job cutting it! The ambiance was pretty nice and they offer free drinks :) definitely recommend!

Everything about my trip to Maude today was great. The front desk was super helpful getting me in and very friendly. They offered me a drink while I waited. Which was lovely but not even needed, as my stylist Nini was ready for me exactly on time. Nini took the time to ask what I wanted, what kind of time I wanted to spend on up keep, and really understand my concerns with my difficulty hair. My hair isn't easy- its a mix of curl, wave and straight. I showed her a few pictures I liked and she pointed me to what would best suit my needs with the amount of time I have daily to style. She was personable and professional- and most importantly, gave me a cut I LOVE. I rarely leave a salon super happy. I usually feel like I didn't really get what I wanted. This was not the case at all, my new hair cut is way better than I had even hoped for. I have been getting compliments ever since I left the salon. The salon is very comfortable and has a very fun vibe. There are lots of products to chose from, from different brands than you normally see. The wall of magnets is amazing. I've walked by this place a few times, and I'm so glad I finally booked an appointment. It really is a gem. Oh, and I have to say- I felt the price was very fair for the fantastic cut I got.

I moved to Herndon a little over a year ago from San Diego, leaving my hair stylist of over 10 years. So I, of course, put off finding a new one out of pure fear. I finally decided to try Maude after reading mostly favorable reviews, and out of pure desperation, as I was about 4 months out from my last highlight/cut. Yes, I went to Kristin B. No, she did not ask me to write this for her. My first visit, she was very understanding of the fact that this was the first time someone new had cut my hair in about a decade, and simply matched my current color and took my same cut up about an inch. It looked beautiful, and exactly how I wanted it. After a few more visits, I told her I wanted something new, but not too drastic. She gave me a choppier layered cut that I LOVE. She is fabulous with interpreting my description of the color I want, and is encouraging, but not pushy, for trying new things. Prices for cuts/blowdry are very reasonable, and color/highlights are well worth it.

My blowout was very expensive and very "ehh." Herndon needs a blow dry bar, desperately.

How I found Maude and my stylist: I just moved from Vienna to Herndon so I was looking for a stylist closer to me. Maude was rated very high and is 2 minutes from my house, so I thought I would give it a shot. I am most comfortable with a seasoned stylist so the lady at the front desk recommended Celeste. Atmosphere: Maude is not a foo-foo stuck up salon--its motto says it all. When I first walked in I was a bit worried at the teenish-like gathering at the front desk, but thankfully I was greeted by someone and they offered me a glass of water. There is a younger attitude and gusto buzzing around at this place! if you are looking for a relaxing zen-like and quiet salon, then Maude might not be your first choice. If you don't mind bustling noise and a hi-paced floor with eclectic decor then Maude is just fine. The cut: I have some color in my hair, but not from Maude. I only went for a cut and style. I also have long, Asian-American hair and it is very thick. It almost grows as soon as it is cut. Luckily I found Celeste at Maude! Not only is she easy-going and down-to-earth, she has an effortless style and I felt really comfortable with her. She was focused on me and she listened to what I wanted during the consultation. She also introduced me to Argan Oil--she is right, it is liquid gold for hair! Overall, I love my cut and I am so happy to have found Celeste. I think the atmosphere could use a little fine-tuning, but other than that it was a great experience and the cut is really fantastic. Thank you Celeste!

I had almost decided to give this place a 'not so good' review because of one receptionist who messed up my appointment and was not willing to accomodate me or even compensate despite her mistake. I landed at the salon for my appt. only to realize that she had wrongly scheduled it for 3 weeks later. When she did not give me any option, i decided to reschedule my appt with a different stylist and come back the next day(And this was the very first time i had stepped into the salon). When i got there for my appt the next day, the receptionist was different, i told her everything that had happened with the earlier receptionist and she was shocked to hear about it. She was very apologetic and couldn't believe my first experience with the salon wasn't a pleasant one. She said she would go and inform vanessa (one of the owners) immediately and she did. While i was getting my haircut, vanessa came and spoke to me and was surprised to know that the receptionist did not inform her about the matter even though she was present in the salon that day! She could have dealt with the situation at that moment itself. Anyway, she was very sorry and even offered to compensate by giving me a generous discount. Well, moving on, i am happy i found this place, the salon is really cute, rustic yet contemporary. Everything in the decor is well thought of, right from the chairs and lights to the little tip holder at the counter. I love going to places which have a character and this is definitely one of those. Talking about the stylist, Ana...she was very sweet, she made sure she understood what i wanted and suggested a haircut that would suit my long tresses. Even after almost finishing the haircut she was willing to incorporate a few changes that i suggested and made sure i was satisfied with the look. I left the salon smiling and looking fabulous. I am definitely going to try their services again!

I couldn't be more thrilled with my recent change to Maude (via referral from Bubbles.....meaning I wasn't happy there - 2 locations tried). I only wish I had come here years ago. Vanessa did an awesome job shaping my hair with the first cut on a last minute reservation and today was the fun day of color! She couldn't have been more awesome and patient working with a previous color/highlight job to get me to a better color. Knowing I may need a touch up before the next appointment, she didn't hesitate to offer a walk in for that touch up. I know we will get past needing that touch up, but how awesome to have someone take several hours to get to a great color! I'm sold and agree with one of the other reviewers too...Rachel was awesome too! I look forward to having a hair home for a long time forward and love the urbanesque in the suburbs! I have been going to Maude for about 7 years and will continue to go as long as I love in the area. What's unique about this salon is that you have your choice of stylists based, not only on person, but by level of experience. It doesn't matter which level you choose, though, I have not come across a bad stylist here. The atmosphere in general us fantastic. The staff really make you feel at home. Upon arrival you are offered a beverage and the friendliness of everyone makes you want to stay all day. There is no better salon in the area!

I love Maudes. Been coming for 12 years and have seen many of their stylists and never have been disappointed. Love that they serve drinks, great music and great energy!

Always loved the vibe at Maude. Love the interior design and funky atmosphere. I have used several different stylists and they are all fantastic. I have never left feeling upset about a haircut.

I had a lovely time being taken care of by Val! I came in with purple hair desiring a more natural color for my grandfather's funeral. I wanted a deep red with some more orangeish red highlights (like my Mom's hair!). I had Val look at my Mom's hair (since she was with me) and now I love what she did! My hair is medium long, cost was $113 for the coloring and the tiny trim/layers she gave me. She was so nice and talkative, and even managed to juggle another client while I was still in my last half hour or so of coloring process. I don't think I will ever find another stylist so amazing, I wish I didn't live so far away!!
