The 25 Best Restaurants In San Sebastián - San Sebastián - The Infatuation

"You probably don’t expect to find cooking this good in the middle of a small-town food market. By day, the Mercado de San Martín is a go-to for fish, vegetables, and meat. But at night, the smell of the grill at Maun, a no-fuss restaurant stall that began as a pop-up, lures in diners. The aisles of the market are lined with tables of hungry diners, queuing up for ruby red langoustines and tomatoes drizzled with zingy olive oil and flakes of salt off Maun’s seasonally-inspired menu. There’s a magic to dining on radically fresh produce right as it leaves the producer’s hand that keeps locals coming back. Maun’s flawlessly executed paella-like rice is the best in town, so don’t leave without scraping one clean." - marti buckley

Absolutely amazing. Fantastic food, with some really complex and well balanced flavours. Not 'cheap' but absolutely worth what you pay. We were able to just walk in shortly after opening, no issues getting a table. They offered to craft a menu for us - like a mini tasting menu. It was awesome. Highly recommend the scallops and ceviche. Mustn't miss this place if you are in the area.

Worst and most expensive meal we had in San Sebastián. The main problem was the service, though the food could also have been better. We sat down and checked the QR menu. The menu lists dishes like “tomato” with zero description. When the waiter came he rattled off additional dishes off the menu with a similar lack of detail (“scallops,” “ceviche,” etc.). At a loss, we asked for recommendations and he perfunctorily gave us a few. We put in our order and waited. First came the scallops. It was an order of six. The table next to us got an order of two. We had no idea there was a different portion available but wished we had because the scallops, while perfectly cooked, were overpowered by a very strong ginger sauce. Not a great start. We then waited for the next course. And waited. And waited. The table next to us, which arrived after us, was on their fourth course by the time the waiter showed up with clams, setting the plate down before turning and leaving. Except we hadn’t ordered clams. I called him back to tell him, to which he rudely replied, “Yes, you did.” I held my ground and repeated our original full order, and he took the plate away. While we continued to wait, we watched as other tables got their food, with explanations of each dish. Over an hour after ordering we got the second dish. Mushrooms. Again the waiter dashed off without a word, and we called him back to ask for clean plates since we did not want the ginger sauce from the first dish to mix with the mushrooms. He seemed confused or annoyed by our request. We also tried to get new forks but no such luck. He came back and put the stacked plates on our table for us to set them. Mind you, we watched as he set new plates for other guests, without them having to ask. At least the mushrooms were tasty. We continued to wait and watched as another table mistakenly received our next dish. They sent it back, and a few minutes later it came to us. It was the carabinero with socarrat. Delicious dish, if a tad salty. Despite seeing other tables get wipes to clean their hands before and after shellfish, we dove in and later had to sit with our dirty hands suspended in the air and ask for one. While in the middle of eating this dish, we got the final dish. Simple grilled prawns. Odd timing and progression, but fine. By this point we just wanted to end the lunch. Unfortunately, the service does not match the price point. What was extra puzzling was that other guests seemed to get better service (having their water opened and poured for them, having their dirty plates cleared and replaced with clean ones, receiving explanations of the dishes as they came, receiving wipes, etc.). I don’t know why we didn’t. If you’re a foreigner, though, maybe go somewhere else.

We had a great dinner at Maun, special thanks to Unai who was so friendly and had all knowledge about menu and dishes, he suggested off menu Langoustine Ravioli and it was to die for, especially the sauce! We had good tomato salad and greatly charred txuleta to finish! We will be definitely back for the peas in April:)

This is exactly the kind of place Anthony Bourdain would have championed. Maun is a truly special experience, set up right in the aisles of the San Martín Market after the stalls close for the day. The atmosphere is electric—a vibe of pure innovation with active music, centered around a passionate love for the product. The philosophy is "market-to-table" in its most honest form, and the flavours are incredibly punchy and direct. We started with the tomatoes, and they were a revelation, simply bursting with flavour. From there, every dish was a standout. The grilled prawns, scallops, and clams were cooked with masterful precision on the charcoal grill, letting the supreme quality of the seafood shine through. It's clear the chef is an award-winning master of his craft. This is skillful, unpretentious cooking that celebrates its ingredients. For anyone who loves vibrant food with no fuss, this is your spot. An absolute gem in San Sebastián that I cannot recommend highly enough.

The scallops tastes little bit sour and spicy, strange flavors, we didn’t like it, the squid is fresh. Btw, the scallops cost 30 euro and squid costs 40 euro which I think is kind of expensive as in a bar in the market.

Had the best scallop ever at this place. I will be dreaming about it. Everything else was super tasty as well 🤤

Situated in a shared market, this place is putting on a clinic in great seafood. I recommend waiting for the chef to tell you what is not on the menu due to freshness and then get at least one of those. I also recommend anything with shellfish because they are experts at making shellfish that bring out the true meatiness and character of the shellfish. My coquitas and scallops were correctly done and had oil-based sauces that cut their meatiness well. I also recommend at least trying any rice dish to which they do a great job of adding fish stock or paste. In my case it was shrimp paste to go along with the massive prawn. Great work, clearly they are on the path to their own larger standalone.

Incredibly delicious, incredibly overpriced. 24 euros for 8 clams, 30 euros for 6 scallops and 65 euros for an extremely basic paella. The service was with a sell, especially on the high margin starter dishes which our front of house strongly recommended, which turned out to literally be a tiny dish with ‘good’ but not out of this world flavour. Eg the clams came with a garlic sauce. Absolutely lovely, just not for 24 euros. Please note that we’ve eaten at ‘expensive’ reteraunts all weeks, so we’re not price sensitive, it’s just quite a bit over priced. Flavours and taste 4/5 Service 3/4 Atmosphere 3/5 Price 2/5 For a total score of 3/5
