"When the logistics of a barbecue are all too much, there’s nowhere better to head to than Maureen’s Brixton Kitchen. The Jamaican cookout operates on a permanent ‘mi casa, tu casa’ basis, and an afternoon spent letting your clothes adopt the smell of jerk from Maureen’s yard is always one well spent." - rianne shlebak, heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, sinead cranna
"Once you get over the fear of being done for trespassing, a visit to Maureen’s Brixton Kitchen is about as nourishing as it gets. In this yard on Railton Road, you’ll find a bustling home kitchen that’s been turned into a full-on Jamaican catering set-up. Trays of golden deep-fried chicken are passed around and the jerk pans are smoking. Come summer especially, this yard is a spot." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak, sinead cranna
"A home-cooked meal is the cure for most forms of malaise. A home-cooked meal from Maureen’s will remind you that London isn’t just decent, it’s one of a kind. Everything about this Caribbean catering kitchen in Brixton is superb, from your entrance through Maureen’s garden gate, to her indoor-outdoor setup where plunge pool-sized pots of golden fried chicken bubble away and legs of charred jerk chicken lay basking on the grill. A takeaway order from one of our favourite maternal figures in London is likely to restore your faith in a lot of things. Not least that some of London’s most memorable meals don’t break the bank." - daisy meager, jake missing, sinead cranna, rianne shlebak, heidi lauth beasley, heidi lauth beasley, heidi lauth beasley, rianne shlebak, jake missing, daisy meager, sinead cranna, jake missing, sinead cranna, rianne shlebak, jake missing, rianne shlebak, sinead cranna, sinead cranna, jake missing, heidi lauth beasley, heidi lauth beasley
"At Maureen’s you’ll find smoking jerk pans in the front garden, giant pots of fluffy rice and peas and, in the heart of it all, Maureen herself. This Brixton home chef makes restaurant-quality Jamaican food, from expertly smoked jerk chicken, to meltingly marrow-rich curry goat, to golden fried chicken. It’s mostly takeaway-only but there are a few tables set up in Maureen’s garden for when the weather’s right." - jake missing, heidi lauth beasley
"Maureen’s represents the platonic ideal of a restaurant to many people in that it is, quite simply, just a home. Everyone is welcome in this Caribbean jerk-smoking backyard in Brixton. Orders are made in the kitchen, carrots are methodically peeled by a bloke at the dining room table watching BBC News behind you and, in warmer weather, patrons pop a squat and eat jagged fried chicken in the garden. Although it’s a home catering setup, this food is restaurant quality. The curry goat is succulent and warmly spiced, and the jerk chicken rightly smoky." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing
