H-E-B to Sell Ready-Made Dishes From Fresa, Ramen Tatsu-Ya, and More | Eater Austin

"I noted that in San Antonio the H-E-B program featured Max & Louie’s New York Diner offering matzo ball soup and other Jewish dishes through the supermarket, with proceeds going back to the diner." - Nadia Chaudhury

Google
A couple years ago I had a co-worker recommended Max and Louie to us. In the past menus with a lot of options to us havent had the food quailty so we didn't start going until this year when I was looking for shakshuka. I wish we would have started sooner so I could have worked my way further thru the menu. We've been four times already and so far we've really enjoyed everything we have tried. Service has also been consistently friendly and professional. We will continue to visit and would recommend to others without any hesitation. Its been decently busy each visit, but we haven't hit a long wait time. There is plenty of free parking as well. They also have a patio area for dining, but im not looking into that until temperatures are more reasonable (though I noticed they have shades and fans out there). All in all, and great spot.

Google
We did early breakfast/lunch here today. Great customer service and atmosphere. We ordered the Southern Breakfast Platter with additional side of sausage and ordered the Florentine with Challah bread. All of the breakfast food was excellent with each order having more than enough food to split between 2 adults. We also did takeout orders for dinner of Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, gravy and green beans and an order of Chicken Parmesan. Both takeout orders were ample food portions and the food was good. We ordered desserts consisting of a large cinnamon roll and a Cream Puff. Both desserts were good but cinnamon roll was dry. We will definitely return here again soon and try some other dishes. Cappuccino and orange/pineapple juice were excellent.

Google
We were highly disappointed. If you've been to a New York Jewish deli you would understand. Pastrami must have been rushed it did not have the flavor of making pastrami in the long process. The bagels were nowhere near the quality of a New York deli. The service was excellent but slow understandably so. Really believe the hype will leave you disappointed. It's not bad food it's just not as good as it could be. And the value was not good at all. Way overpriced. Jason's deli beats it hands down.

Can’t say enough about the meal I just had the Max & Louie’s. Not just the food (which was excellent) but the overall experience. Everything from the music, to the staff, to the decor was just perfect. You can see the staff here enjoys what they are doing. The cooks in the back are joking and having a great time with the wait staff. The wait staff is interactive and persoanable. I stopped in the ice cream shop after my lunch and enjoyed a scoop of maple pecan. Huge cup for $4. I had dined here once before and definitely need to come back more often.

Google
Party of five, walk in for brunch. We were sad immediately. Our waitress, her name was t, did an amazing job. Every single plate that we ordered was full of flavor and extremely delicious. I have not one complaint about this place. By the time we were ready to go, it was very busy. The bathrooms were very clean. It is a must stop if you're in the mood for some carbs.

Google
First time here! Had a last minute brunch date. Saturday morning, going into the start of lunch hours. BUSY! But luckily had the option to sit out by their patio with no wait time at all. Really loved how immediately the hostess asked how our day is before even asking how many to a table. Friendly staff! Including our waitress :) We had the chili loaded fries (oh my! So cheesy, full of flavor, even kidney beans were topped within the chili!) a absolute fave. Also, ordered a puzzle with pepperoni & spinach. One of us had their French toast. Additionally, their New York hot sandwich. So much food! Flavor! Had to bring half home. Will be going back.

Google
My first time here and I will be back!..The cleanliness of the restaurant the staff, shout out to Max my waiter, most importantly the food All Outstanding and I’m making plans to visit again, next time for breakfast. The restaurant itself has the appearance of a Diner but the food is like a high quality 5 star restaurant really enjoyed my lunch here

Google
We have been to Max and Louies New York Deli several times, and I can't believe that I had not reviewed the restaurant. We love Max and Louie's. The food is excellent, and the portions are huge and tasty. Our server was also excellent and personable. You can't go wrong with Steak and Eggs for dinner!

Violet D.

Yelp
Great food and atmosphere. Our waitress was amazing and our food didn't take long at all. Will definitely return!!

Yelp
It was ok . Surroundings were good festive! Food was average not sure if I will be back!

Yelp
They have an extensive menu so they have anything you could crave if you're a picky eater. We've been few times and everything has been served in great portions. Burger and fries was delicious with the cookies and cream milkshake. My boyfriend got the pastrami sandwich and that was massive, sad I didn't get a picture of it. They now have an ice cream shop connected to their restaurant so that's a plus to crafty coffees.

Yelp
Still a big fan. Never had a bad meal or bad service here! But those prices! I went alone. and had a BLT sandwich with coffee. I substituted their automatic side cole slaw for a cut fruit cup. The BLT with coffee and a small fruit bowl, with a 15% tip to the server was 43 dollars!

Yelp
I've eaten at Max & Louie's prior to this review. Stopped by Max & Louie's for a quick bite before a movie. I arrived about an hour before happy hour and decided to enjoy an Old Fashioned along with French Toast and fries. Excellent service and a great overall experience!

Yelp
This is a nice place. It's busy, so early waitlist is recommended, but the service did not suffer. I had to ask them to stop filling up my coffee because just when you get it balanced, here they come to top it off. Food was generally good. As you might expect, the portion sizes are overwhelming, I heartily recommend splitting. The french toast is a good 8 inches square and 1.5-2 inches thick and there's three peices and that's one of the smaller dishes. I found the atmosphere to be a bit hectic, with a lot of activity around. Not the place to go for a quiet meal and discussion, it's noisy and difficult to talk. The prices are also rather high, they're good and they think highly of themselves. I'm not sure I'll be back for that reason, but it's a nice place to eat.

Yelp
We've gone twice here now and we really enjoy it every time! There's a nice big selection of food items in their menu and it is very New York-esque! They have breakfast all day which as a breakfast foodie I love! The chicken tender appetizer comes in a count of 4 or 6. The grilled cheese is customizable and I added ham and it tasted really good! I had a cup of chili as well and I really really liked it. It's always pretty busy but you're able to get on the waitlist on Yelp which I always appreciate. The waiters and staff are nice. We will come here many times in the future! And I want to try the bagels some day! They have a whole case of bagels and pastries that I cant wait to try soon! They also have a coffeeshop next door that they also own where you can just have a cup of coffee while you wait to be seated.

Yelp
This is by far the best dinner I have been to outside of NYC and/or NJ. Heck, dare I say, it may even be better than any in those two states as well. I mean everything on the menu is just excellent. Food is fresh, cooked with the finest ingredients, and exploding flavors on every plate. If you are in San Antonio and looking for an authentic Dinner-dinning-experience, look no further than this place. Can't wait to get back!
google avatar

Renee M.

Yelp
I have read about the chalah French toast and decided I had to taste the hype. Every good thing you have heard is true, it is truly light and fantastic! The maple syrup with melted butter just made everything better! I also had chicken tenders but could not even eat all the French toast. Hubby had corned beef hash with an egg on top and a great fruit salad. Our friends had a challah French toast platter and also loved every bite.

Yelp
I have since moved from San Antonio, however my business took us here as a reward! Food is really good, definitely gives a diner feel. One of the best places I had went in San Antonio hands down! Their Philly cheesesteak #todiefor !

Yelp
This was my first time at Max & Louie's, but it won't be the last. The overall experience was great from the New York delicious decor, to the great service and delicious food. I tried the famous root beer from New York and it was delicious. As an appetizer we tried the loaded latkes and they were to die for, crispy and cheesy. For breakfast, I had the Salmon Benedict and it was hands down the best Benedict I've ever had. Overall, I am so happy with this visit and looking forward to going back!

Yelp
Great 1st time experience here. The staff was friendly and a cool looking diner atmosphere. And even though I'd was crowed on Sunday the wait was not terribly long (just make sure you get on the wait list early). The portions were huge so I had leftovers to eat the next morning for breakfast. I do which they had more vegetarian options. My aunt wanted an omelet with all veggies but the closet option they had didn't have everything she wanted and you couldn't substitute items and although you can create you own omelet, the amount of items you may wants can add of fairly quickly. And speaking of price, the foods not cheap but given the quality of the food it's understandable. Beside the food their was a coffee bar, ice cream and dessert so there was a little bit of everything available it satisfy your needs.

Yelp
Rarely on this side of town much so it was a must to stop in. Breakfast for dinner!!! The waitress was nice. The food was served quickly. Happy hour with Makers Mark Old Fashion ... yes please! I recommend the French toast or the BLT(add avocado).
google avatar

Yelp
Max & Louie's New York Diner has a great atmosphere for eating, excellent service for ordering, and wonderful food. I've eaten corned beef hash at many restaurants, but never had one that combines corned beef with pastrami. In my attached image, it doesn't look like much food in the skillet, but it actually is a LOT of food. The taste is different due to the pastrami, but it was still very good. I would probably try other offerings in the future, but if you like eggs, corned beef, and pastrami, I would recommend you try it. In my second image, you can see the amount of hash browns they shovel onto the plate. You definitely won't be hungry when you leave. I liked Max & Louie's very much and will definitely return the next time I am in the San Antonio area.

Yelp
My mom and I visited this place for a birthday breakfast. We came on a Thursday, so it wasn't too crowded. We were seated right away and I started checking out the menu. Our waitress soon stopped by to get our drink order. After reviewing all the options, I decided to try the Southern breakfast platter. I opted for sausage instead of bacon, and home fries instead of hash browns. I was amazed by the size of the biscuits, and enjoyed them greatly. I ate some with the gravy but also used jam as well. The sausage was tasty, and had a little heat. The home fries were cooked nicely. After finishing breakfast, we took a look at their bakery area. Since I was full, I didn't purchase anything. I was surprised they had an ice cream shop connected as well. The building had a great size and was plenty spacious. Overall, I enjoyed my meal and would definitely come back to try some other items.

Yelp
The few times I've been here the food has been great. I usually stick with the pancakes or french toast, which I highly recommend. Huge menu so lots to choose from. And who doesn't love breakfast all day? Now here are my complaints and why I can't give them 5 stars: -- Some of the plates are a bit pricey for a diner -- The 4% "service" charge for paying with a credit card. I believe they should absorb those costs as part of running a business or build it into the price. -- A bad experience with their bagels. I ordered a few to go and when I cut into them later that same day, they were rock hard. I haven't dared try their bagels again since then. Maybe it was an off day. It's always busy when I've stopped in but the service is always great. Definitely worth the visit at least once!

Yelp
My family and I visited Max & Louie's and the nostalgia was fun. Food was hot and there is a wide variety of food.

Tina H.

Yelp
If you are craving phenomenal food, huge portions, fantastic atmosphere and top of the line service. Then look no further than Max & Louis's in San Antonio, Texas, I would drive 510 miles to just eat at this restaurant. Ask for Elaine. The Queen of hospitality and service. We had the loaded Latkes Scrambled eggs with salmon, bacon, and toast Two huge delicious cabbage rolls with mashed potatoes..just like Mom made Banana Split And a to die for ding dong cake You will not regret a visit Trust me, I didn't get fat eating bad stuff

Yelp
What a delicious breakfast! Our waitress was so kind and the food came out so fast. Everything was fresh and delicious! The music they place is fun, great place to have conversations and hang out and enjoy the food! We watched the football game since we came on a Sunday and the prices are great too!

Yelp
The food was excellent and the ambience was wonderful. Elaine did an outstanding job ensuring I had everything I needed and made my first visit a great experience. I can't wait to come back and try more dishes from the menu!

Yelp
I love it and it's in the neighborhood. Delicious grilled cheese and extra avocado makes it worth a trip! Ice cream shop is yummy if you are an ice cream lover! Jana N.

Yelp
Went on a Wednesday so there wasn't a wait. We were greeted by our server who was nice and got our drinks to us pretty quickly. The food was really good. The waffle was nice but the pancake was better in my opinion. I would go back if I am ever in the San Antonio area again
google avatar

Gloria J.

Yelp
We are visiting the area for the month. We decided to give them a try. Boy, we weren't disappointed. The service was amazing! The portions were way more than expected and it was reasonably priced. We've been back twice!
google avatar

Mary Ann C.

Yelp
Ambiance was laid back. Service was welcoming and seated us right away. Our waitress was awesome as she got us drinks without us having to ask or flag her down or anything. The food was great!! Minus the fact they were still making fresh garlic knots and I think they kinda forgot about us ... the person who brought the food out. Not the waitress. So eventually I asked the waitress and she gave us plenty of garlic knots. I ordered 2 cookies which they had ran out of chocolate chip so I got the double chocolate chip and oatmeal cookie. I wasn't a fan of the cookies. They were almost $7 each. The portion size awesome but the taste to me ... in my opinion was a little bit lack luster. We did go to their dessert size of the restaurant and it was $11 and change for their milkshake ... what ?! It was good and all but not $11 for the to go size

Yelp
Amazing food and service every single time! Recently visited on a mom night out and the food is of high quality and the new wine menu is amazing.

Yelp
Passed by chance and was really impressed. The portions were large, the service was fast and the ambience was cozy. It is worth returning just to have the dessert!

Yelp
So we came here for my nephews graduation ceremony a few days ago. I put us on the waitlist so we would be seated once we arrived. Thankfully we only had to wait maybe 10 minutes before we were seated. I definitely advise reservations or put yourself on wait list depending on the time and day as this place gets crowded quick. They did put me down with another party by accident but thankfully was fixed quickly. The place itself was well kept and clean from what I can see and even with the crowd everything looked nice. I really liked the decore of the place. Our waitress was very nice and helpful. She did tell us that they had a huge selection of items to pick from (the menu is big with many options to choose from) and did give us info when we asked for it. She did put our order in and got us our drinks soon after. It took some time for the food to be prepped maybe 20-25 minutes but fair. As for the food, my nephew ordered chicken strips with fries and I did like how slightly crispy and juicy the chicken was. The fries were alright but they were not hot. I wasn't impressed with the fries at all. My brother ordered a burger with chili cheese fries and he said didnt mind the burger. The fries were decent enough but could be better. My other brother ordered a vegan burger (beyond burger) but they told us that they didnt have vegan bread (even though online said that they did). He had it like a lettus wrap instead and said was alright. For future reference it's best to make sure to look up your options if you are vegan and maybe call ahead to confirm if they have certain things prior to coming. I ordered their BFM (burger, fries and milkshake combo) and they bring it out with fries and burger on top of my milkshake. I did like the look of it for sure and they did bring me a plate so I can take my burger off. I ordered a BLT classic burger and tasted good to me. It was a big burger too so had to take the rest to go. I really liked the sweet potato fries as they were hot and crispy. I think they did a really good job on the milkshake too very sweet and tasty. The paper that they used to hold the food was in the milkshake so if you're not into that maybe ask to be on the side instead of in the drink. Overall the food and service was good. I may consider coming back in the future to try again but will plan better or call ahead to confirm some stuff. Keep in mind too that this place is pretty expensive and can get busy quickly.

Yelp
The chicken and waffles came out looking solid--two strips of fried chicken, golden brown and a little crunchy, laid right on top of a thick waffle that held up well. The syrup leaned sweet with a dark, almost molasses-like depth, probably more than needed since the waffle already had a dusting of powdered sugar. Chicken could've used a touch more seasoning, felt like the crust was doing most of the work. Still, it hit that comfort food note. That slab of challah French toast on the side was the sleeper hit. Eggy, soft in the middle, with a crisp edge, and the syrup for that one was lighter, citrusy, almost marmalade-like. Could eat just that and be good. The omelet was massive. Stuffed with spinach, mushrooms, and some salty meat--bacon or ham maybe--but the star was that gooey layer of melted cheese baked right over the top. Not greasy, just enough stretch to make each bite feel rich. Hash browns came out just right--crispy outside, not too oily, and actually tasted like potatoes instead of fryer oil. Toast was an afterthought but fine. Everything came out hot, service was quick and low-key. Good spot if you're starving and want something hearty without getting too precious about it.

Yelp
Max & Louie's Diner 5/15/25. -/100 I actually got pictures of our food this time before we all dug in, which was tough because it all looked so delicious, that I had to tell everyone to WAIT before eating :-D The Patty Melt sandwich was very good and savory with the side of Thousand Island dressing. Enough to take half of it home, which we did. Chopped Chicken Liver here is very good. I think it is my favorite. It has a very distinct flavor from others I have had, and I found out it is good to freeze so I took some home. The GF pizza was very tasty, but... the dough was under cooked :-( and mushy in the middle. We asked to have some of it baked again, but it was still not done. For next time, we will make sure to mention it, but we also don't want it burnt, so update to come on that when we try it again. I love a good Matzo Ball soup, and this one was good, but I found the broth to be very salty for my taste. I shared half of it with my Mama, and she said it was ok for her. I don't use much salt when I cook, so I may just be sensitive to it. There are two large screen TVs playing two different channels, both had cooking shows on. They were entertaining, but it would help to have the captions on, so I will ask next time. We had a problem with one of the recurring commercials for a bug repellent that kept coming on because it was SO visual...made it awkward to eat at times but I wasn't sure if I could ask for the channel to be changed, so that's another question for next time. We had a great meal, and Lily was kind and attentive to all our questions and requests. Very patient...Thanks . ~LindaD

Yelp
100/100!!!!! We came here on Friday for my moms birthday breakfast Mom & I got Chicken and waffles Soo good, the honey was a nice touch to the chicken! My sisters got pancakes and an omelette they both enjoyed. Brothers ordered steak & eggs / chocolate chunk pancakes (could only eat one pancake bc they're huge and sweet) Service 10/10 Ambiance 10/10 can't wait to be back

Yelp
Max and Louie truly so delicious and loads of choices to for breakfast, lunch or dinner! Great customer service only thing the wait can be long during weekends and holidays! But worth every minute!! There is plenty of seating inside for large groups!
google avatar

Lataysha C.

Yelp
From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed. The receptionist at the door greeted me warmly and offered me the choice of a seat at the bar--which I happily accepted. I was then greeted by a very nice young lady at the bar. Though she looked a bit tired, she made a genuine effort to stay upbeat and attentive. I browsed the menu and decided on the Noodle Kupkake, banana pecan waffles, and bacon & cheese eggs. I was pleasantly surprised when she asked how I liked my bacon cooked--something I've never been asked before at a restaurant! The Kupkake arrived first, and wow... it was delicious. I highly recommend it to any foodie looking for something unique. The portions here are generous, the staff is attentive, and the whole place has a busy, lively atmosphere. The only reason for the 4-star rating instead of 5 is that one of my utensils was dirty when first served. Other than that, I'll definitely be back!

LaTaya M.

Yelp
This was probably the least favorite of all the places we visited. Our waitress was nice and rhe place was big, spacious and clean. But the food could use some work. The ice cream was good though as were the pancakes which were huge. The chicken was fried in bread crumbs which gave it a weird taste and texture but did nothing to add flavor. The burgers were super bland and they were really not excited about the taste.

Yelp
We drove across town to try out the famous Max & Louie's for breakfast on a Saturday morning. It was quite busy, as expected, but the wait wasn't too terribly long. We tried a classic breakfast as well as the shakshouka and really enjoyed everything. The shakshouka could have used a little more spice, but that is just my personal preference. Everything was fresh, hot, and made to order which we really appreciated. The menu is a little pricey for what you get, but if they are able to sustain those prices because people are willing to pay, more power to them! I can't say I would drive across town again to eat there, but I definitely would stop in if I'm in the area.

Yelp
Food and ambiance is great. Had to remind my server of a few things a few times. The company is always amazing.

Yelp
Ohhh we!! This place is great!! Had lunch here today and I was amazed at the differs choices of food on the menu. They serve breakfast all day and serve good sized portions. The place was busy but we were seated within 10 minutes. The service was great and we received our food fast. It all looked and tasted good. I had a Club Salad , my coworker had the Chicken and Waffles. The ambience was great, with plenty of pictures and decor from NY. This is a place you must visit.

Yelp
I remember when my brother was going to school in upstate New York my dad would take us on road trips in that area. Any time we got hungry there were these airstream trailer type places with all kinds of American fare. When we would come home I would miss those types of places where breakfast was served all day, sandwiches were stacked high, and every cook knew how to make the perfect burger. Finally had the chance to make it to Max and Louie's and it brought back those memories. I have ordered numerous times now and have enjoyed everything from French toast to spaghetti. They make their bread in house, and house made soups daily. They have a full bar and a bakery and ice cream shop next door. The menu has something for every taste and is perfect for kids. Open from 7AM to 9PM daily.

Yelp
We frequent this place for breakfast and lunch and it's always delicious and has super friendly staff.

Yelp
I had been wanting to try this place for a really long time so I was super excited to finally enjoy breakfast here. Our server was excellent, she was so energetic and full of life and definitely from New York or Jersey lol! I started off with some coffee and a bagel with cream cheese. My coffee was excellent, smooth and not bitter. My bagel could have been toasted a little bit longer and I was a bit put off by how cold and hard the cream cheese was, definitely knocked down my expectations quite a bit. I ordered the eggs and pastrami hash and my husband ordered the chicken and waffles with scrambled eggs and potatoes. My food was 10/10 perfect! My pastrami was so moist and full of flavor, added an amazing smoking us to the eggs potatoes and vegetables. I could eat that all day it was so good! My husband felt a bit less impressed with his meal, the waffle was good but the chicken was a little bit overcooked and dry. He also felt the eggs were overcooked but he liked the potatoes. All in all his food wasn't horrible but it wasn't amazing. Nothing that would stop us from going back again though, especially that Pastrami! It definitely feels like a deli and diner, they have amazing desserts in a case when you walk in, everything looks so good and it is definitely a place that you would have to go to multiple times to really get the full effect of it. They have tables for large groups so you could definitely go with a big family or your work team. The service was top notch, we will definitely go back to try the lunch menu as well.
google avatar

Angel G I.

Yelp
OK, so wow, this was our first time here, and let's just say bring an appetite! They have a huge selection of food and dessert on the menu! So I got the long islander breakfast sandwich with hashbrown and of course coffee! My husband got the southern breakfast platter with coffee. Let me tell you, there was no skimping on anything what so ever. I also got a Babka and giant chocolate chip cookie to go. Its an awesome place to make you feel like you're somewhere else. The food was amazing and our server was great as well.

Yelp
We dined in for breakfast. As per usual we had excellent service and were greeted with a smile. The food was yummy and delicious. The restaurant was clean and kept up. This is our favorite breakfast spot in San Antonio.

Yelp
Came in on a Friday for lunch - got the Reuben (with pastrami) and the kids spaghetti & chicken parm sandwhich! Server was amazing I wish I asked her name! Bread for the chicken parm was pretty fluffy so that's the only -1 star for and we asked for more marinara on the side to help which was fine. It needed more sauce. The Reuben was standard - I loved the pickle it came with and the coleslaw was good (im not a coleslaw person so that says a lot) Kids spaghetti phenomenal you can tell the sauce was super good (same marinara sauce we got on the side) and the meatball was amazing Overall wish the bread was different for the chicken parm but can tell it's homemade and great ingredients ! Bonus: Melvin's icecream next door was our last stop was amazing happy hour is 3-5pm both places had great customer service

Yelp
I've been coming here for work for lunch meetings for a while now. Highly recommend for that. Menu is extensive. Service is great. Arrive early to be seated right away. Food is good. Came here tonight for the first time for dinner. Sat outside on the patio (we love patio seating) but the lighting and fans need work. It's too bright, and the fans never circulated to our table even when we were the only table out there. If we'd asked our waiter to help with that though - he would have. :) It is September so we get how hot it is, and the patio is in a parking lot, but things could be done to make that experience more enjoyable. We don't enjoy the inside temps in SA of 65 degrees or colder. Last thing: I ordered chicken parm and it was so amazing and I'll have left overs for days. Love Max n Louie's!

Yelp
I had the apple cider chai latte and it was good! My coworker had the birthday cake shake and it was huge and looked amazing with a chocolate cupcake on top! We only went for a dessert and it did not disappoint. The waitress was super nice and knowledgeable! The diner is cute in decor and it was clean.

Yelp
Our Daughter told us about Max & Louie's so we went on Friday. Our waitress AMELIA was super wonderful & very friendly she gave us a quick history lesson on Max & Louis's. I ordered the Pastrami Rueben with a cup of clam chowder soup( which looked like a bowl). My husband got the Pastrami & a slice of carrot cake, and every single thing was delicious. We will be going back this time with our daughter (by the way she was very upset about as going without her)Because she's was the one that found it on tik tok

Yelp
Always great service and huge portions of food! Had a holiday luncheon with coworkers and everything was tasty and plentiful. We didn't save room for dessert. Burgers are really good. Always large portions and fun service.
