"There’s something about the eclectic mix-and-match décor, dim lighting, and hipster staff that make this boutique hotel feel like a more intimate, Dutch equivalent of the Ace. The canal house set-up, residential location, and crazy-steep staircases lend any stay an extra authentic feel and the small-ish, well-priced rooms (there are larger options available, too) mean that it’s a great, non-corporate option for work trips or for those looking to spend the bulk of their time exploring. The on-site bar is actually frequented by locals and often plays host to local bands. We hear the Museumplein outpost is just as fun. "

We had a fabulous short stay at the Max brown hotel in the Canal district, we stayed there to celebrate a birthday and in doing so they decorated our room and left some goodies. The room was clean and bed was comfy. Only downside but couldn’t be helped due to being an old building was the very narrow and steep staircase and we noticed the walls were very thin and could hear people next door. Other than that the hotel was fabulous, staff were so welcoming and friendly, especially on arrival when we were offered a welcome drink. Would definitely recommend and would stay here again!

This was our third stay at Max Brown Canal District Amsterdam, and once again it was wonderful. My partner and I truly love their rooms with canal views—they make it easy to immerse ourselves in the beauty and atmosphere of Amsterdam right by the water. The location is also perfect, with everything within easy reach. During this stay we had a small booking issue, but the staff kindly helped us resolve it quickly. We are very grateful for their support and warm hospitality. We highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to enjoy the charm of Amsterdam’s canals, and we can’t wait to come back. Thank you again!

I was very disappointed with my recent stay at Max Brown in Amsterdam. Firstly, the cost of the stay for two nights was absolutely extortionate for a single box room where I could barely do a full 360! I booked online a budget single room and it was €500 including breakfast which I thought would be substantial based on the photos of the room on the website. The room I received was far from what I booked and the worst part was, the bathroom was OUTSIDE the bedroom. Hence when I needed to use the loo, I had to go into the corridor and across the corridor to go to the bathroom. As you can understand, in the middle of the night this is far from ideal as I had to remember to bring my key with me and felt unsafe and uneasy leaving my room in my pjs in the dead of night. This was not mentioned upon booking which was extremely disappointing. The person who checked me in mentioned it to me but at that stage it was too late as there was no option to change room. The room also was up 3 flights of extremely high and steep stairs and there was no offer to help us with our luggage. Secondly, the breakfast was the most appalling hotel breakfast I’ve ever had. There was only boiled eggs from the ‘hot food’ front and flies flying around. The other options were cereal, croissants and toast which for €18 was a bit of a farce. The staff I must say were very friendly anytime we came in and left which is the only positive of the stay. I wouldn’t recommend as I know that the IBIS styles down the road would be a lot cheaper and would have bigger rooms and a better breakfast.

Great location, short walking distance to central train station and many attractions. Staff were all exceptionally friendly. We lucked out and got upgraded to a canal view room. Due to location of the hotel views were beautiful, but the canal and sidewalk weren’t busy. The room was quiet and sleep quality was high. Only gripe was that we requested a double bed, but the two single beds were made up individually and would occasionally slide apart. Not sure if this would have been resolved had we brought it to the hotel’s attention, but we only stayed for 2 nights and didn’t want housekeeping. I found this hotel to be an excellent value and would definitely stay here again.

Cute hotel, lovely location, friendly staff. They have an optional breakfast that you can pay for...we did, and it was just right for getting our day started. We enjoyed our stay here, with a view of the canal. Note, though, that the room is small and hard to find places for two people to stash things, and we travel light! We are in our 70s and found the curved staircase going up to the 2nd floor (that's 3rd floor in the U.S.), a bit tricky to navigate. But despite these few minor challenges, I would highly recommend staying here.

The hotel is in a great location, everything walkable and trams short distance away. The staff were lovely and the room was great just for me. I would recommend upgrading from the ‘small’ if two and you prefer quite a bit of space - but it depends on your preferences. The bar was great for drinks and had a couple snacks. I found out you get a complementary drink on arrival however I was never offered this - make sure to ask. The rooms were quite hot but there is a fan if needed. I could hear everything my next door neighbours were saying and this was until 0000, you also hear quite a lot from the bars etc nearby. The steps are steep so if you struggle I wouldn’t recommend.

We loved our stay here! The people working here are so friendly, helpful, and chill; plus, one helped me by carrying my suitcase up the narrow stairs! The room is definitely on the smaller side but that was in the description online. It was clean and the bathroom was nicely remodeled. We had a lovely view of the canal and the location was perfectly situated for walking around the whole city. I also accidentally left something behind and they were so communicative and kind! Overall, I would stay here again and highly recommend it!

I can’t say enough wonderful things about this place! The location is fantastic, and the staff Emily, Will, and Deanna, were all amazing! We celebrated our honeymoon here and were greeted with beautiful towel swans and rose petals, which made our stay even more special. We would absolutely return! The only downside was the lack of AC in our room, but we were offered an extra fan, which helped. It just happened to be an unusually hot few days, reaching over 30 degrees. Overall, our experience was still very enjoyable, and the location was perfect, with shopping, cafes, and the metro just a short walk away.|Thank you Max Brown and all the staff! Proost !

Yelp
We stayed 3 nights and had a great time. There is no elevator, but Mark was at the front desk and was more than happy to take our bags to our room once it was ready. Meanwhile we went out and explored the city. There stairs are very steep and difficult to navigate. Cecile and Gina were both very friendly and helpful, we really enjoyed talking with them both. Our room was very comfortable and well maintained. Great location to canals, restaurants, shopping and the train station. Also, they make the best whiskey sour I've ever had!

Yelp
This is an amazing little hotel on a canal very close to everything. The staff, especially Cecile and Liam, go above and beyond to make you feel at home. The rooms are super cozy with a nice breeze. We absolutely love it here!

Yelp
One of the best hotels I've stayed at. On a trip through a couple countries in Europe we decided to stay here for a couple of nights. This was the quirkiest hotel I've ever seen, and I loved it! The staff was helpful and nice, and the main "lobby" was cozy and welcoming. The stairs to get to most of the rooms may not be fit for those with canes, walkers, wheelchairs, or anyone that has a tough time on regular stairs or a problem with balance as they are steep and, for my room at least, numerous. The room itself was clean, good-looking, and smelled amazing. The breakfast in the morning was very good, and they have snacks and drinks for sale all day, including a bar. In summary, it was quirky and awesome and I would absolutely suggest staying there!

Yelp
Very Good hotel-- friendly people, funky decor, great location (right by the museums, tram stop, bus to the airport (route 197)). 24 hour low key bar. Basic euro-style buffet breakfast. Best part was very friendly staff, especially Thomas who helped us a ton. Recommended restaurants and got us reservations. Then our flight was canceled and we had to rebook through the airline and Thomas helped with that, waiting patiently to get us through to an English speaker at the airline. Room is small, with nice funky/upscale appointments. One star off because the bed was jammed against the wall, so if you are a couple, one will have to climb over the other to get out of bed.

Yelp
The hotel lobby serves as a bar with great interior decorations and comfy lounge couches. The staff is incredibly helpful and pleasant. The room, however, is run down and lacks isolation. Neighbors showering, flushing the toilet, having sex, and simply walking produces an insane amount of noise. Not only that some of the rooms are located right next to the bar/kitchen area so prepare to hear people in the bar until late at night and then early birds having breakfast and the general kitchen's hustle and bustle which was unreasonably loud. If you plan on sleeping in or still suffering from jet lag, ask to have the room on the upper level or further away from the kitchen. The location was great, walking distance to major attractions.

Yelp
Nice hotel and I did not use any of the bar services. The rooms were well maintained and the staff were friendly and attentive. There is a person attending the bar overnight to control the entry. The rooms are smaller than most Americans expect, but we were only in room to sleep and bathe. This is a great central location near Amsterdam Centraal Station where one can travel around Amsterdam and The Netherlands very conveniently. The area is remarkably quiet at night and just a picturesque place.

Yelp
The hotel lobby and bar are cozy and well decorated leading you to believe that the rooms would be the same. No. The room we stayed in was an upgraded larger room with a canal view. First of all it was very run down, wall paper peeling, paint chipping, a hole in one of the towels etc. The bedding was subpar as well very large lumpy pillows. The worst thing however was the noise. This room has 0 insulation and is under the second story hallway. So every single time a person dragged their bags across the hallway, it felt like this was happening 1 foot above your head. You could hear EVERYTHING, people walking, talking etc. We could not sleep as a result of all the noise from above.

Yelp
What a nice location is the Max Brown Hotel in downtown Amsterdam. There are parking places in front of the hotel, near the canal. So watch out when you park the car! We had a Yelp event in the lobby/bar of the hotel. The staff is very friendly. The hotel looks very cosy and small. But they have 40+ rooms. At the bar you can get everything you want in the bar: coffee, wine, small snacks. The walls of the hotel al very unique: they are made of old books. Every Friday there is live music. As a hotel guest you can use the hotel boat. The guestbook of the hotel is very special: just write down your experience at the wall in the lobby. For all the locals:, the hotel is not only for the tourists, just come in and drink a wine!

Yelp
Great service on arrival we where presented with a bag full of guides to the city and information which was a nice touch, hotel staff where excellent and room was clean and cosy perfect for our weeks stay. Cocktails where very nice also!

Yelp
Dismissive service when checking in. Mostly ignored. Too expensive. Top rooms (109-111) are open to enclosed skylight area which was moldy and stinky. This smell was sucked in through the windows of the rooms because of a large shower vent which you could not turn off. Minimal breakfast.
