Iconic Dishes That Define Chicago - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Did Al’s start the legend that they invented the Italian beef in 1938? We don't care—their beef is perfect. They use a secret recipe that’s probably hidden in a tungsten safe, surrounded by a moat of the same orange gravy that fortifies their fluffy yet formidable bread. Skip the other locations and go straight to the original Little Italy spot, where they marinate and roast all the beef onsite." - nick allen, john ringor, adrian kane

Just popped in after looking them up real quick while in the area for work. The lady was very polite and friendly, the shop was clean and very well kept. The food was great, a very generous sandwich which hit the spot and the fries were great too, can't go wrong with fresh crinkle cut fries! Potentially a little on the pricier side for some, but I felt it was still worth it!

First time here got the Chicago dog (of course) and the beef egg roll. Very good! Lots of good stuff on the menu. And 6 Chicago dogs for $26 seems like an insane deal. Keep in mind that you might wait a little bit for your food, they're a small operation. Totally worth the wait, though.

My sandwich was excellent tonight. I had the 6” Regular Italian Beef with Italian cheese, mild giardiniera, and the au jus on the side which I drizzled over sandwich with a spoon. The sandwich can be dipped if you want, but the bun gets too soggy IMO so I prefer to just put the au jus on myself. Everything was perfect, I’ll be back again soon.

Yelp
With not a plan for lunch today I proceeded to drive myself over to Max Italian Beef Shop on Mack Avenue in Grosse Pointe, MI. Since leaving Chicago 13 years ago, I have had multiple businesses near where I lived out east assure me that what they were going to serve me was an authentic Chicago Italian Beef. And while some of these businesses did produce a very good "Italian Style" beef sandwich...at best they were a mediocre Chicago Italian Beef Sandwich. This is NOT the case with Max Italian Beef Shop. Oh my goodness what a sandwich! It is by far one of the best Chicago Italian Beef's I've ever had...period. We don't need to qualify with, outside of the Chicagoland area. The bread is perfection. The giardiniere is crisp and spicy and flavorful. The beef is clean and picked free of anything getting in the way of its silken, meaty awesomeness. And it is presented with a smile and an attention to detail. It is not a place to stay and eat, and that's A-OK. Make sure your next to go order or catering order includes the Italian Beef, Double Beef and / or Polish Sausage from Max Italian Beef Shop. You will not regret it. Highly, highly recommended.

Yelp
Decent Chicago style Italian beef sandwich and sausage. There aren't many places that offer this type of sandwich other than Portillo's. It's a nice addition to this part of town where there is a dearth of good restaurants. There are some flaws from my first visit here. It takes a long time to get a simple order of a sandwich and fries. I waited over 30 minutes. Call ahead. The restaurant is takeout only. There is a small waiting area with two stools and no tables. The person who takes orders should speak louder and communicate more effectively. It's hard to hear her. There is a credit card charge. I'm glad I asked first and paid cash. There are no signs indicating there is an extra fee for using a credit card. I didn't ask what the fee was, but be aware that there is one. Lastly, the food is pricey. A sandwich is $15. If you add sausage, it's $4 more. That's $19 for a sandwich that sells for less than $10 at Portillo's. Condiments are $2. A side of fries is $5.

Yelp
The service is turtle pace. Lacks Chicago atmosphere. No Chi-town nostalgia. I hope the food makes up the speed of the service.

Yelp
My sandwich was absolutely delicious..hot and filling. I also got the beef eggroll (first experience) it too was very good. My wife got the 15 bean soup she wasn't happy with (didn't have enough beans) but she too got the beef eggroll which she did enough. All in all it was a good experience and I will definitely be going back. Service was really fast (we walked in) we got our food in about 10 min. Forgot to take pictures ( I was too hungry..)

Yelp
Tried for the first time and won't be the last. I had the Italian beef sandwich and it was delicious! The meat was tender, seasoned very well and the bread was really fresh. I got my sandwich spicy with extra giardiniera. I am definitely going to go back and try the other menu items. The owner is nice and a Veteran. Please support this business you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Little spot on the East Side. Very tasty. Good quality beef. The Italian beef egg rolls were my favorite thing. Ordered several items to try; all excellent. (Egg rolls, Regular Italian beef sandwich, italian beef nachos on Doritos)

Yelp
Elite Italian Beef sandwich. Handily the best in metro Detroit. Will be back regularly

Yelp
Loved the food, great customer service (both on phone and on-site. This is a great addition to our Detroit Metro Casual " Foodie" Experience! Very generous portions ~ the pricing definitely reflects the quality/portions. You might even have some leftovers!
