Yelp
OK, so let me start by saying I really wanted to like this place, based on some of the reviews and recommendations from my coworkers.
However, dining there left me uninspired.
Let's start with the decor, it's pretty dated and well worn, a bit dirty, it doesn't really feel welcoming, but more like remnants of a past era where it used to be good.
There is a lot of art from a local artist on the walls that really isn't very good. It's average at best, yet they're trying to sell things like a Jackson Pollock inspired piece for $8000. That right there is just ridiculous. I can see why all this art has been hanging on the wall for probably decades unsold.
But let me move onto the food and service. Service was OK. Our server was friendly enough and they did check in on us from time to time. The bussers, not so friendly, no greeting, no hi, no how are you're doing this evening. Literally walk up to the table, didn't even ask if we wanted water, and just poured it with a blank unfriendly stare on their face and then walked away.
The cocktails: their description sounded delicious, but what they delivered was a subpar unattractive drink that an amateur would make it home, it lacked excitement. And the flavors were way off balance.
The food: they brought us out an amuse bouche the consisted of a dried slice of baguette topped with a dried out salmon "mousse" topped with some sort of oily dill concoction. It was clear they had premade a bunch of these earlier in the day and they were just sitting out in the kitchen drying out. The moose had a dried skin on top of it, but I tried it anyway and the flavor was super fishy, it continued to linger in my mouth even after I took a sip of the cocktail to wash it down. My recommendation to the restaurant is if you are going to serve amuse bouches, you should prepared them fresh to order, especially if a mousse based dish or at least if you're going to pre-make a bunch of them keep them fresh and covered and don't serve dried out hard crusted versions. That set the mood for the rest of the dinner.
We ordered the birria taco appetizer. What came out were three full-size tacos and, for some reason they put a coleslaw mixture on top of the tacos and not in them, not sure why they did that. It was served with a small cup of consume and some sort of mayo. The tacos themselves were bland and flavorless. The consume was bland and if it hadn't been for the mayo, it would not have been edible. Also, the portions were way too large for an appetizer. Note: Birria should be flavorful!
For dinner, we order the chicken with mushroom risotto and the Max's burger. These were both OK but good Lord were the portions massive! There was at least 2 1/2 cups of risotto on my dish, way too overkill. It also had uncooked leeks in it, which is a no no, so it made eating the risotto unpleasant as you're crunching and chewing on the leeks. The chicken was OK, a little under-seasoned, but cooked well.
The burger, again was massive, had to be at least 6 to 8 inches in height, fully unreasonable for any person at a sit down restaurant to take a bite of without unhinging their jaw. Even though the burger was ordered medium rare, it still looked and tasted dry with no seasoning on the meat. The sweet potato fries were thick and tasty, but that was about the best part of the meal.
All in all, I was really disappointed at what I experienced. I'm not sure why the food is so bland. I don't know if it's the chef having a poor palette or if they're just catering to the much older crowd that was there that night, if that is their typical group of patrons.
They really need to work on the seasoning of their food, the proper cook of their food, the freshness and the portions. Additionally the bartender could use some lessons in making drinks.
Doubt we will return again as there are much better options in the city to choose from.
I really want to enjoy this place but I just couldn't.
