IT SEEMED LIKE ALL hope was lost; I telephoned many potential Wing establishments but they all claimed their kitchens closed at times too soon for us to dine, as we had landed many hours late due to delayed flights. Luckily, Maxwell's American Pub told me their kitchen was open til the wee 1 o'clock hour.
AND THANK GOD FOR THAT. Stumbling, tired and hungry, into this otherwise nondescript pub, we'd have been happy with any fare, at any price. But it was Happy Hour, and that meant $4.75 youcallits (tequila n soda for me) and.... $7.25 order of... the very Wings that brought us there in the first place.
MY WINGS ARRIVED IN a porcelain handled tray with nine specimens of bar-Wing perfection, crispy like only twice-cooked Wings can be. I knew not only the joy I was soon to have, but at HH prices I knew my insatiable Wingppetite™ would irresponsibly make me order another round: that's how good they looked. And damn it that's how good they was.
THE BUFFALO SAUCE could have and should have been more spicy, but knowing my Minnesota locale let me appreciate these Wings for "meating" my Wingspectations™ to conceivable capacity. The fresh celery and rich plentiful bleu cheese capped this bar Wing feast expertly.
I ENJOYED THEM SO MUCH that I stopped by the kitchen to chat with Rosa, the maybe-55 year old cook who prepared all the food by herself. I asked her about her Wing method: she bakes, then refrigerates, then fries. All great Wings are twice cooked. She finalized our convo with "muy bueno?" and since I took Spanish all four years of high school, I could confidently answer: "yes, they were absolutely muy bueno."
ALL IN ALL: four two-boners and one one-boner with a bonus Just-the-Tip™ (9.5/10) for the unexpected nature of fantastic traditional buffalo Wings in Minneapolis. For Christ's sake I ordered a second helping!
PRICE POINT: 9/$7.25 during happy hour = outstanding. Normal price $10.95 - okay
