Where to Drink a Guinness in the Milwaukee Area This Winter | Eater

"During the holiday season, all of the historic buildings of downtown Cedarburg are aglow with twinkling white lights. The town celebrates five Festive Friday Eves each winter complete with live music and carriage rides. Tucked inside a charming building dating back to the late 1800s, Maxwell’s is right in the thick of every celebration. This corner tap is known for its ? ?-pound burgers and fish fry, but it’s also a great spot to just enjoy a pint while you play a game of pool." - Jeanette Hurt

After a day of painting Cedarburg area scenery we chose to support local. These days many eateries are closed on Mondays. Happy to see we had quite a few choices. An old building with some charm, but tasted all over and loud bar chatter. We were seated quick in a back room with booths. Server was pleasant and efficient. Our burgers were a perfect medium, and both the tots and seasoned fries were prepared well. Monday was a buy one get one special on burgers, so a super value. Restroom was small and showed its age, however it was clean.

Charlie our waitress was very nice and attentive to us. The cheese curds are delicious the sweet and spicy boneless wings were delicious too. I ordered the Kansas City burger and it was amazing. Fast friendly service and prices are good.

Google
Food was delicious, staff and services was on point! I would highly recommend anyone who loves food to try out this establishment. Loved the the location and friendly service!!

Went to get pizza from Tomaso's across the street but it is so good we had to wait so we came across the street to this bar that had my father in laws last name. Bar tender that looked like B-Real from Cypress Hill was happy to see us and had no idea who we wr. At that moment i knew i was going to be here for a while. Ordered 20 teriyaki wings and they came out FAST and perfect. Wish i lived closer because i would DEFINITELY be a regular here.

Google
All 5 stars across the board. My friends and I have always shopped the shops of Cedarburg, but we have never stopped for dinner anywhere. Today we stopped, and the burgers were so good, my friend ordered another. Will be back with other friends

Google
Great pub atmosphere and service, lackluster food. I ordered the bacon and blue cheese burger and the burger meat was blackened and dry (I asked for it to be cooked medium). The blue cheese and bacon toppings were skimpy - not even a full piece of bacon, and a standard slice of cheddar would’ve been more cheese than what I received. I ordered the ‘homemade’ kettle chips and they were not warm or fresh (I’m 80% sure they are just Lays). I expected more for the $15 price point and other reviews.

Have been to maxwells a few times. Never had a bad meal, service was always outstanding and the atmosphere just sits right. Great little pub

Google
Order wings at 6pm, pickup time was 7:45. Had to still wait 10 minutes for the order. Get home and wings are all under cooked. Live nearby so returned. Talked to the manager and was told they were busy and he could cook a new order. Asked how the kitchen could send food like that out, and again response was they were busy tonight. Complete joke of a response, food safety people. Beware visiting this place, especially if they are busy.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night at 5:30 PM. We had made reservations beforehand so kudos to Maxwells for taking reservations for a Friday ! Our waitress was quick and witty. We all ordered the fish fry with different sides. The sides are a large portion and the fish fry is two pieces of cod. I ordered white Zinfandel since they didn't have Prosecco which I was disappointed about. Bill for four people who had four fish fry's and 5 drinks total came to $114.

Yelp
Julie was an excellent server despite it being super hectic due to the Wine and Harvest Festival. Food came out quickly and was fresh and hot. The deluxe grilled cheese was so good I couldn't even save any to take home. Restaurant temperature was very warm, but other than that it was a great experience.

Yelp
I try to give this place multiple chances. They do have good boneless wings. At the price of $13.99 they should be! That is for very small sized boneless wings. I had the Bloody Mary. That was really good. Our server did a good job. (Again expensive) I tried the tots for the first time. B- Super small portion and barely any toppings. C for ambiance. It's a "dive bar", but they think they are in Cedarburg so they can charge more. It's kind of dirty in there as well. Prices reflect a higher end sports bar. B- food quality. Served in a basket and given a tiny plate. Service. B+ She was good!

Yelp
Sunday outing with my daughter and sister. Food was fine but the bill came with and extra service charge. I asked the waitress what that was for, she said if paying by credit card. I said I was paying cash. I gave her money asked for change said oh you are not tipping me? I said yes and waited for the adjusted bill. She came back with some incorrect change no bill and accused me of laughing at her. We were having a private conversation nothing to do with her. Never got a correct bill or correct change. Second time there that was a nightmare. Never again.

Yelp
Disappointing visit. Cranberry salad with grilled chicken was okay. Grilled ham and cheese was falling apart from lack of cheese. Hamburger was the worst. For $16 you get what looked like a 1/5 lb patty on a small bun with some decent fries. Compare that to a half pound burger with lots of toppings at McJuggers in Dundee 25 miles away for the same price and you might never go back to Maxwells. The onion rings were overcooked too.

Susy H.

Yelp
The service was very good, we sat down at a table right away. I loved the old charm & character they have maintained in this old building. The food was very good, we plan on going back

Yelp
This place is incestuous. The only people who you will see are the people that work there, drinking behind the bar for free. Wings are the staple, which should shine some light on the kitchen's ability to "cook" anything ‍. The ambiance is the equivalent of walking into a family argument between your cousins. Unfortunately, despite a great location and a local base, Maxwells has been squandered. Hopefully, someone else will take over, clean it up, and improve the community. ‍

Yelp
This is the third time I have experienced the same situation. First 2 times with my husband and yesterday with my daughter. I am a firm believer of always giving a second chance. The first two times, my husband and I felt like we were racially profiled. The first two occasions, we were seated in the same place and we had to go get the waitress because we felt like they were ignoring us on purpose. My husband is a very patient man. I remember that I wanted to leave the place. We were nothing but nice kind and very patient with the waitress which it was the same one that took care of us before. He asked me to stay but yesterday was the worse! I went there with my daughter around 4:15 PM. I asked the server for a table and right away I knew how this experience was going to be because it has happened before. They looked annoyed that I was even there. We were seated right away but we were seated in the back behind the bar. They did the same thing the last time. The area was totally secluded. Everybody was enjoying the game and they were tables available upfront, but they chose to sit us back there. We were sitting there for 30 minutes, and nobody came in to give us not even a glass of water. Both my daughter and I used to bathrooms in separate occasions just to walk around to see what was the holdup but the servers didn't look busy at all. After a while of waiting, a Caucasian family was seated in the same area we were seated. The server came to service them not even 5 mins after they were seated. At that point I understood what was really going on and I decided to leave. I felt extremely offended. I could totally understand if it happened one time but three times? Too bad I can't give Zero stars. Stay away from this place.

Yelp
Husband and I ordered Boneless Wings to go. Food is typical bar food. Nothing special but would eat here again AFTER COVID. It wouldn't be my first choice, but if someone wanted to eat here, I would go. Staff doesn't follow COVID protocol. No employees (hostesses, bartender, kitchen staff) wore masks. They had their kitchen door wide open and I watched one of the cooks making while he was making food as we waited for our take out. During that time he was texting on his phone, then going back and touching food and eating food then going back to cook. No hand washing between these activities. If this doesn't bother you then I'm sure you'll like it here! Otherwise, I would suggest not eating here as they don't seem to care about slowing the spread of the virus in the community.

Yelp
Maxwell's is a fun spot to grab lunch or an afternoon drink. The service is good and the staff is friendly. They have great deals, and it's always packed! I always get the deluxe grilled cheese, which is the perfect "grown up" grilled cheese. I highly recommend to stop in while exploring downtown Cedarburg!

Ron F.

Yelp
We went there after Harvestfest 9/17/22. We were seated promptly outside but then no wait staff for 20 minutes. The people seated next to us were served and there were people seated after us but no one came to our table. We tried to get the attention of one of the servers but that was ignored too. So, we got up left and when they found the menus and unused silverware on the table maybe they figured it out. I know everywhere is having staffing issues but this didn't seem to be the case because everyone around us was taken care of.

Yelp
Great place for food and drink. Good deals on chicken wings on certain days of the week. The bartenders are kind and fun. There is a pool table available for use. Dan the bartender is funny and great at customer service.

Yelp
Decent lunch spot. Do have the skinny ranch fries! Do have the sausage patty burger. Wife had a buffalo chicken wrap that appeared to be good. Service is a little spotty. Place has some nice dailys that seem to be dinner -5pm start specials. The also have some nooks & crannies rooms. Interesting place. Definitely a townie bar for locals. Dont let that scare you out. Building is also interestingly shaped on a corner lot.

Nina K.

Yelp
Drinks were fine, atmosphere fine, bartender named Joey, short brunette girl was incredibly rude. Told us we had to "pay her for her time" for playing bar dice. I've never met a bartender that gets an expensive shot and charges you for it when you play bar dice. Also I was talking to my friends and she yelled at me for something I said to them. Just unwelcoming and made me dread my time there.

Yelp
Great food and staff! We've have eaten at Maxwell's numerous times over the past several years. Everything has always been great! From their burgers and wraps to their Friday fish fry! A+++
google avatar

Yelp
Very pleased with our dinner this evening. We had the fried cheese curds as an appetizer, very delicious! We all had burgers and they were juicy & delicious. Service & outdoor patio were very pleasant. Living in Cedarburg for several years without eating here, we were all very surprised & impressed! We will be back!

Yelp
We happen to be in town for the county fair and stopped in for lunch, bad news! This was the worst restaurant experience I can remember. Poor slow service and terrible food. The Corona beer was the best tasting item served. They also have a surge charge for paying with a card. We will never return or recommend this business.

Yelp
Be careful and read the "fine print" before ordering wings on Wing-night! Here are some of the terms and conditions we were told. 1. You can't order water with wings, needs to be a soft drink or bar beverage, otherwise you will be charged a full breverage price for the water. 2. You have to eat more than half of your order of wings before taking home the rest, otherwise they have to charge you full price for the wings. 3 Wing nights price is only eat in, no take outs! 4. Kitchen is slow, food take some too long to get to the table. Excuses were a large order was a head of us, but the place was half full! Disappointed!

Yelp
My better half and I spent the weekend in Cedarburg and stopped by Maxwells to grab a drink and a bite to eat and watch the World Cup Final. I don't know if it was due to the game or the day (Maxwell Street Days) but they had a special event menu featuring only appetizers and burgers. The taplist is pretty standard and boring although I was pleased they served MKE Brewing Company. While watching 90 minutes on nil-nil soccer, we noshed on some homemade mozzarella sticks which were average and some above average burgers. The 1/3 pound patty was nestled between a great burger bun. I went with the bbq, cheddar, and bacon variety and was pleased. Service was cordial and efficient. Definitely not a destination spot but not a bad place to stop into for a quick bite and a beer.

Ashley D.

Yelp
Bartenders weren't busy at all yet our dirty finished plates sat in front of us for 15 mins while the 31(as he states for the whole bar hear) was flirting with the teenager waitresses that are all sitting down at the corner of the bar as they have no tables to wait on. If you got time to lean you got time to clean kids. Wouldn't come back!

Yelp
I've been going here for about 3 years now and I have to say its definitely a top choice when I want wings on a Tuesday or Thursday. The staff is nice and they have specials everyday of the week. The wings are pretty good and I feel that they've gotten better over time. I think that the price has slightly increased recently but the quality of food warrants it. A friend of mine tried the baked french onion soup and gave very positive feedback. After my most recent visit, I felt that I needed to update my review. I ordered fries with my wings and grabbed the Heinz ketchup bottle. After tasting the ketchup, I am certain that the ketchup in the bottle was not Heinz as it was very sweet and tasted like brown sugar. I was disappointed that the bottle did not have an expiration date and that there was a possibility that the establishment was falsely advertising.

Yelp
Excellent night at Maxwell's! Incredible wings, perfect burgers and generous brandy old fashions' Service was perfect. Still a fav after all these years! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Maxwell's has long been a favorite of ours but things have changed since covid that are making us second guess the decision to dine there. Don't get me wrong, I understand that the restaurant industry is going through a tough spot with covid but there's been a few big changes that aren't for the better. They went on a limited menu when they were only doing takeout but now they're back to regular dining and the full menu hasn't returned after months of what looks like full capacity in the restaurant and full staff. Disappointing but I get it - Maybe they can't get certain items anymore. The part that really irritated us was the surprise 3% fee for paying with a card. No signage of the change or warning written anywhere about the fee, just a quick mention by the waitress as she was going to run my card. The other option is to pay $4 to use their overpriced ATM. Since we never carry cash, I think it'll be a long while before we consider going back. You'd think a bar would want to encourage their patrons to open a tab and use a card but I suspect it'll drive other patrons away too.
google avatar

Sabina M.

Yelp
Best wings, beer, burgers and fries!!!! Very friendly service and great atmosphere. Overall great food and people!

Bonnie K.

Yelp
The food is just okay. The biggest problem is that no employee or customer wears masks to protect others during COVID. I saw a waitress digging in her mouth and then grab menus when I was picking up my to go order. Gross.
google avatar

Mike H.

Yelp
This use to be a great restaurant/bar however the bar staff has turned for the complete worst. I've now had two separate instances where I ordered a drink and about halfway through the drink the bartender will just take it and dump it down the drain without warning.. along with not refunding any money back. I have also had a previous instance in the past where I had left a skateboard resting against the bar and the staff closed and refused to answer the door to allow me to get my board back.. then the following day I called up the bar and nobody could claim or find it. Place has gone down the shitter, I would not recommend this place to any close friends or family alone.
google avatar

Renee K.

Yelp
Disappointed. This was always my go to place for beer and wings but I haven't visited in a while. Went today. The place looked a bit run down. First serving of wings was boneless and only warm inside. The second order was done in and the sauce was watery. Sad
google avatar

Tweetie T.

Yelp
I'm here every Tuesday and Thursday for their wings and ranch fries. Good environment with nice staffs.

Yelp
I have been spending a ton of time in Cedarburg lately and found Maxwells (not hard to find on Washington Ave...), which is a cool older restaurant near the winery. I don't care for much on the menu, but do love the wings. On Sunday's, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursday (could be wrong on the days so don't count on this) they have $.30 wings so long as you buy a cold frothy beverage. Who eats wings without a beer anyhow, so no big deal. Good wings with a cool new outdoor patio. I like it. Its cheap and good food. Staff is marginal. A bunch of high school/college girls who could care less about customer service. Just a FYI, be prepared for mediocrity.

Dennis T.

Yelp
Thursday night - tried to call 30 times between 6:30 and 7:15 PM to Order Wings Take Out ! Nothing but Busy Signal on phone - had to go there to order - 30 minute wait - when I told lady taking order about the phone all she could say was "oh, that's strange " - no checking on phone to put it back in service ??

Chris S.

Yelp
I frequented Maxwells restaurant in Cedarburg today and was astounded none of their staff were wearing masks during a pandemic! I construe this as a total disregard for the patrons of their restaurant and will not return to their restaurant. I was so disheartened by my experience but they were not alone in the town of Cedarburg. Apparently the businesses In Cedarburg do not truly care about their patrons and would rather politicize what is going on in our state and country rather than do the right thing and follow the law whether you agree or not! So very sad for you and the town of Cedarburg. Shame on you! I will be telling everyone I know not to patronize your establishment due to your total disregard for the well being of your customers!
google avatar

Roger G.

Yelp
Good, cheap, and plenty. Best Wing Bang for the Buck! Choice of bone in or boneless, these large meaty flappers come with 4 sauce choices. Best deal Tuesdays and Thursdays. I deleted one star for parking, witch can be a problem depending on time of evening, or day of week (see special days above). Get your wing fix on at Maxwells on Main St. in Cedarburg.
google avatar

Brian H.

Yelp
3 1/2 stars. We stopped at Maxwell's for a fish fry. One plus is they offer a discount on the fish fry if you get it between 5-6pm. The fish was pretty good but I could of gone for one more piece.
google avatar

Annemarie D.

Yelp
I was hoping to have pizza at Tomaso's but they were hella busy. Mental note: go early to Tomaso's! Maxwell's was pretty busy so I figured it must be decent. The reviewer who mentioned the bar service was spot on. We sat at the end of the bar while waiting for our table and the bartender never acknowledged us. I decided to get the perch fish fry. It was so overdone that it was like perch jerky. My gf got a burger. She ordered it medium but it was pretty much rare to the point that she didn't want to eat it. In retrospect, I guess we could have sent both entrees back. The thought of waiting for replacement meals wasn't very appealing. And we would have had to track down our server to let her know that the food was poor. I can't even recommend this place for drinks since I doubt you will get service any time soon. There are too many options in Cedarburg to waste your time and money here.
google avatar

Sachin S.

Yelp
Came in for a sandwich on a Saturday afternoon - place was busy but waitstaff very attentive. I ordered a Reuben, it was decent but nothing extraordinary. Came with fries or cottage cheese or chips. I got the cottage cheese but fries also looked good (small cut). They had a good selection of beers on tap and a few on special each day. Today they had $3.75 Harp, Guinness, and Smithwicks. Bloody Mary's also looked good - they had a regular version and a spicy version that a lot of people were ordering.

Yelp
Had a very stressful day at work. Music helps me. Was telling a coworker about a particular song and played it when i got there. The bartender apparently didnt like my song. It wasn't offensive at all but he decided to skip it. I expressed my concerns, explained I had a hard day and that, that song WAS helping me get in a better mood. He apologized and gave me $1 back. The next song came on,which I also played, completely different genre. Guess what he did? HE SKIPPED THIS ONE TOO. and while proclaiming his disgust in my taste in music, threw me another dollar, and had the audasity to proceed justifying his behavior stating that if I was a guy he wouldn't've even have refunded me. Gee! Thanks for making my night even more miserable. Got to listen to 3 out of the 5 songs i played.

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
First time coming to this place. Never in my life have I been to a restaurant where's there's so many rules! Ridiculous! Saturday night wing special 49¢, a good deal but the catch is they come in increments of ten, my brother ordered 20 and they told him he'd have to pay full price if he didn't eat ALL of them!!!! My father ordered my mom a beer and the waitress wouldn't get the beer unless my mom gave consent for the beer to be brought for her?!?! Beer specials don't start until 7pm and pizza (which we came for originally) isn't served until 9pm. LOUD people at the bar slamming dice on the tables. Overall, my family will never be coming back.
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
My wife and I went here for the first time after the Harvest festival for a bite and some drinks. We were seated immediately outside on the patio as we requested,so far so good then the waitress came for our drink order my wife got a beer and I asked for a Bourbon over ice from the list of Bourbons they say they Carry, she came back to pur table telling me they rarely carry any Bourbons because anytime a guest ask for one they are always out, well finally I got a jim beam after all that, now getting the drinks took about 15 minutes after that.Long story short they also had a limited menu due to the Festival no biggie we still ordered, my wife got a burger and said it was ok but my brat burger was Terrible burnt not very good . All in all we won't be back.

Jennifer K.

Yelp
Maxwells is our home town pub. They consistently do it right over & over again over the last I don't know how many decades.... Maxwells can be described as simple, consistent, affordable and a great place to catch a game & cold one. Burgers, wings, prime rib sandwich...all great...everytime! Arguably the best place for wings in Ozaukee County!
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
The bartender are all snobs who think they are better then you. The food used to be decent but in the past year or so it has gone way down hill. I will admit they have a great wing special but the wings are so small you have to eat double you normally would so what seems like cheap wings really is about the same price you would pay anywhere else. The prime rib sandwich is just awful they should just take it off the menu.

Katie S.

Yelp
Maxwell's never disappoints! There are so many great options on the menu that it's usually a struggle to decide what to order. They have great appetizers and the Reuben and Kansas City burger are delicious. The fish fry on Friday nights is also great and I love their clam chowder. I really have never had something there that I didn't enjoy. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. I've always had really great service and enjoy sitting out on their patio in the summertime. If you find yourself in Cedarburg, I definitely recommend stopping by for some drinks and a great meal!
google avatar

Leah D.

Yelp
Sorely disappointed. My friends dragged me here as they were starving and didn't want to look for anything else. Standard pub food. Everything about this place was average. Our waitress was fine but not very observant. Had to ask for silverware and napkins after our meal came. I had the French onion soup as it was one of the only things on the menu I could eat that wasn't fried since I keep kosher style. It was mediocre at best. My boyfriend had the boneless wings but since we were here for lunch couldn't take advantage of their 35 cent wing "day" it only starts at 5:30pm... I was not impressed on any front and won't be returning.

Ryan K.

Yelp
So first, this is a bar and this is bar food. That said, service is good outside dining is great. People are friendly drinks are strong. Nothing is "Oh my god I have to have this!" But nothing on the menu is bad. If you are looking for a quick bar food bite then this is for you. If you are looking for unique dining then it's not. All of this said I like Maxwell's over other restaurants in Cedarburg. Heck in the county.
google avatar

Yelp
What a great restaurant with a great atmosphere. We were in town for our sons football game with Concordia and we stopped in for lunch before hitting the airport. Glad we did!!! Chrissie was a great waitress with our big crew!! THANK YOU!!!

Rob M.

Yelp
went to maxwells, for the first and last time. I took my family one day for lunch and the only reason they are even getting a star is because of their service. Our black hair waitress was amazing, and would pull her away from her job if I could. the other part the food, was terrible, My mom ordered chicken wings that were served to her half cooked, bloody in some areas. when the manager "adam" came out to talk to us about them, he told my mom that she would not get sick from eating half cooked chicken and she would be fine. so i talked to adam, about these wings, he said " what do you want me to do about it"? I told him he could first off tell the truth about the possibilities that someone could get sick, by eating half cooked chicken, and not to try to cover his own behind. I also told him that I would file a claim against him with the health department, he rolled his eyes at me and walked away. I would not recommend their food to anyone. but if you are there for a drink I would look at their health code score on here first also before eating or drinking anything there. Its not hard to run a bar and grill, from experience, you just need to knowledge to do so.

Joan C.

Yelp
We had to wait over an hour for our food and when it came here the food was ice cold. No apologies or anything. Very disappointing.
google avatar

Steph S.

Yelp
Good, decent bar food and a friendly hometown feeling, even if you aren't a local. This quaint bar always has folks pony'ed up at the bar. The wings aren't hot, but they have good flavor. The fish fry on Friday's is excellent. Also enjoy their skinny ranch fries.

Yelp
I've been there twice with my family. Once on a week night and once on a Saturday night. The staff is nice and Mondays they have buy one get one burgers! Such a good deal and the burgers are tasty...We got mushroom and swiss and bacon cheeseburger. Fries were small, crispy and fresh. Good selection of draft beers but we got sodas. On the weekend we got fish which wasn't the best but also wasn't expensive... Good place! Will be back!
