My crew and I were excited to try Maxwell's Plum in Wellington. We all were customers of their venue on 1st and 64th Street in NYC back in the day. It was simply a sexy, great go-to spot, and if this place has even a hint of that, we wanted it.
Unfortunately, when we arrived, there was no one to greet us for 5 minutes. There was a big round table about to leave, a raucous bridal party of 10, and maybe one or two tables of two.
When we finally got seated, they wanted to seat us next to the bridal party but then figured it might be loud (you think?) and seated us elsewhere. I sat on the throne of a low, badly-filled couch and, while cute, not appropriate to dine at unless you are home splayed out watching television. The speaker above my head was playing a loud hair band tune that probably wouldn't have been heard if people were in the restaurant. But it was empty, and the music was annoying. We waited over 10 minutes for someone (anyone) to come by and ask us if we wanted a cocktail, but no one arrived. I didn't see a busboy, a server, or anyone working at the restaurant except for a bartender who, if she looked up, would have been able to see that we were stranded in Nowheresville. However, she was too busy tidying up at 8 p.m. And why not? The place was empty, and I'm sure she'd wanted to bust a move. Still, we didn't even get a nod from anyone.
We got up and walked out, laughing at how no one noticed. Zero.
Come on. Maxwell's Plum. Live up to your namesake and do better, or call it a day.
