While waiting for Art of Bread to open up for the day, I noted Maya, a beautiful Mexican restaurant nearby. A peek at their website and a quick check on Yelp and I was determined to try this place. During the pandemic, the menu is limited, a few starters, entrées, family meals, and desserts. According to the owner, the menu was initially not designed for takeout. A new one, with meals that travel better, would be available soon. Clearly, he has been thinking of improving his guests' experience. Despite the curated menu, I found enough items that were of interest.
I almost always order elotes when they are on the menu so when I saw esquites, sold by the pint, of course, I would order them. Can I say that the esquites, roasted corn, cheese, and jalapenos were exquisite?
For my main course, I enjoyed the alambre de asada, which consisted of thinly sliced beef, diced bacon, onions and poblano peppers, melted cheese with a number of palm-sized corn tortilla. I loved the rich and complex flavors of the dish. It was also large enough for sharing.
For dessert, I had the flan, a light egg-based dessert with a boozy-liquor syrup. It was even better the next day, directly from the fridge, cold, sweet and syrupy.
The restaurant is beautiful. I loved the wood accents (tabletop and beams), marble bar, and black and white tiles. Since the restaurant is relatively new, opening its doors in August, it was also very clean. I cannot wait to enjoy a meal in the restaurant. But until I feel safe to eat indoors at restaurants, I'll be relying on pick-up.
