Modern Filipino Bistro Makes Plans in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"I learned that former Bivouac Ciderworks chef DJ Tangalin is launching his debut solo restaurant, a modern Filipino bistro called Maya Eatery that he hopes to open by the end of May; created with business partner Archie Soria, it will be the first of several concepts. He’s previewing the menu at pop-ups — dishes include raw fish with kalamansi and fish sauce, an ensalada with rambutan vinaigrette, and chicken inasal with sweet-and-sour bread sauce — while he secures a permanent Hillcrest location. Translating to “little birds,” Maya is meant to evoke both freedom and nostalgia, and the menu will feature new versions of Filipino classics as well as creations that combine housemade fish sauce and fermented shrimp paste with his French-trained technique." - Candice Woo

This is the second time we have been here. I ordered the Filete Al Ajo both times with a second serving of veggies in place of the rice. I'm so glad they have healthy options that meet my dietary restrictions! The atmosphere is very colorful and artistic.

This restaurant is fantastic. Absolutely love the layout, the employees were extremely accommodating to our dietary restrictions and extremely kind. Our waitress kept checking up on us accordingly, and most importantly the food was fantastic. Great flavor and the salsa was on point. I highly recommend getting their fresh bowl of guacamole! We will definitely be back and make this our new Mexican restaurant. Make sure to support your local businesses.

This is a relatively new restaurant to the downtown Broken Arrow area. We ordered the chicken fajitas and enchiladas. The chicken was actually really good! I enjoyed the meal, but I do think the rice could use a bit more seasoning. Aside from that the staff was very accommodating and quick with their service. I would go back again for sure.

Google
This place was amazing. I got the Birria Quesa Tacos. Everything on this plate was awesome. The rice was cooked perfectly and the beans tasted fresh. The Birria sauce was on point and of course the best Birria Tacos I've been able to find.

My hubby and I were looking for somewhere new to eat in Broken Arrow…. Our search landed on Maya Mexican Eatery. Guess it’s been here 8 or 9 months! Wow! Well, so glad we found it! Chips and Salsa - really good! I had the Birria Tacos (in the quesadilla section) OMG! DELISH! Beans and rice were really good. Hubby had the Hawaiian Quesadillas. He said they were really fresh. The guacamole was really tasty! Serving size was so generous for both meals we ended up taking leftovers home. Our serve ,Yarixa, was so helpful and attentive). You need to try this place… we will definitely be back!

Visited Maya multiple times and service is always great. Their food is delicious and the prices are reasonable. Don’t sleep on Maya! Definitely worth a visit.

I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve tried this place. I’ve been driving by for months but finally decided to give it a try. It was so good I’m already planning what I’m going to get the next time I come. This time I went with the Quesa Birria Tacos and they are probably the best I’ve ever had. Beans and rice were also delicious and the guacamole and salsa tasted amazing! Service and atmosphere were on point. I will definitely be back!

This was my second time to order cheese, dip, and chorizo to go. The last time I ordered the small this time I ordered the large. It was the exact same size. I asked for extra chips and salsa because of the larger queso and they charge me four dollars for what I could’ve gotten for free in the restaurant. The total was $19 for about a cup of cheese and chorizo and two small bags of chips with three small salsas. That’s about the most money I have spent for the least amount of food.

Yelp
LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Incredible service, food, and cleanliness. Had my birthday dinner here and the salsa, queso, Margaritas, and our meals were truly outstanding. 10/10!!!

Yelp
Maya on Main Street in Broken Arrow offers a lovely dining experience from an aesthetic standpoint. The restaurant is clean, well-maintained, and has a very nice interior. The staff were also excellent; the wait staff were consistently friendly and welcoming throughout my visit. I particularly enjoyed the appetizers: the thin chips were fantastic (easily my favorite part of the meal!), and the accompanying salsa was flavorful with a slight sweet note. However, the main dish I ordered, the Cancun Lunch, was disappointing. The menu describes this as two cheese enchiladas with two eggs on top, served with your choice of sauce, rice, and beans. First, I was not asked for my preference on the egg style or the sauce choice. The eggs arrived over hard, which meant there was no yummy, runny yolk--a crucial element for this type of dish--to enhance the flavor and texture. Second, the "cheese enchiladas" were not traditional. They were made with flour tortillas containing white cheese and were covered in queso blanco, rather than the corn tortillas and traditional sauce typically expected for a cheese enchilada. Finally, I found that the entire plate, including the sides, was overly salted, which detracted significantly from the overall taste. While I was disappointed with the preparation of the Cancun Lunch, the quality of the service and the clean environment suggests great potential. I will definitely return but will choose a different entrée from the menu next time.

Yelp
Not exactly sure how it happened but I didn't take any meal photos but the food was so good! Guacamole was so creamy I didn't want to stop eating it. My husband and I shared the steak fajitas and wow were they tasty. We met friends and had a wonderful night out. The sangria swirl was just what I needed! We'll definitely be back and I can't wait for nicer weather so we can sit on the outdoor patio and have a drink. Inside was decorated cute and service was top notch!

Yelp
First visit to MAYA. The service was quick efficient and we were never lacking for refills of drinks and the adult beverages. The ambiance and decor is very pleasantly decorated to reflect the name and food. The restaurant has a selection of food that should satisfy most guests. I have some questions about specific dishes. Four people, four separate dishes, four opinions that were unanimous that this was by far the best Mexican food we had had since moving from Tucson. The Chili Colorado will definitely make you break a sweat. Great spice burn , but not the burn that you can't taste anything again for hours. The Elote was delicious, so good that I didn't think about the picture until I was finished. A touch more Tajin and the corncob to be hotter. The charro beans were not salty as some can be. I would definitely recommend and give this business a two twirling forks up

Yelp
This Mexican restaurant, Maya, was a delightful surprise for lunch! They offer enticing lunch specials and complimentary crispy chips with homemade salsa. The interior features a vibrant Maya theme, with full-size murals and a stunning backdrop of Chichen Itza, Mayan architecture. I appreciated the variety of seating options, especially the round booth, which is perfect for larger groups. (see pictures) The service was attentive and friendly. I opted for the build-your-own lunch with crispy corn taco and pulled roasted chicken as my meat option. The chicken was incredibly flavorful, cooked with sautéed onions and peppers, unlike the dry, boiled chicken found at other places. Additionally, I tried the chicken burrito and cheese enchilada, both of which came with a choice of sides. I selected the rice and steamed vegetables. The veggies were well-seasoned and flat-grilled for a nice char. My husband ordered the lunch-size chicken fajitas, which came in a generous portion. We ended up taking half of our meal home. His dish was accompanied by rice, a small salad with guacamole, lettuce, and pico de gallo, and he chose charro beans as his side. -yum I will definitely be returning, if only for the delicious chips! I'm thrilled that a place like this has opened up on Main Street.

Yelp
This is our new favorite local Mexican place! We enjoyed drinks, queso, chips & salsa, a taco salad, and the birria tacos for lunch. The restaurant is very clean and nice inside, and the service is wonderful. Reasonable prices and great food = win/win!

Yelp
What an awesome location! Clean and colorful place! We were properly greeted and seated and handed menus. Our waiter took our drink order. He promptly retired with our drinks and took our app order, queso fundido con chorizo. When the queso arrived, we were handed two small plates and the tortillas but the problem was that we had four people at the table. He then brought us an additional two plates to enjoy our queso. It wasn't half bad but wasn't great either... Onto dinner, flautas (rolled tacos) for a couple of us and carnitas and green chile for the rest of the table. Huge portions, rice and beans were ok, flautas were a little burnt. Our waiter appeared nervous and we tried to be extra nice with him. Left him a good tip but can't say that we will be back. Of note, we live in AZ were we have really good Mexican food so it's hard to compete.

Yelp
I wondered if the name of the restaurant was indicative of the style of Mexican cuisine? Is this Mayan style served here? It would take a very astute and well-trained culinary historian to sort out the subtle differences between modern Mayan or Aztecan inspired Mexican food. Yeah, I know the Spaniards had their spoon in the pot too. But of the two native cultures, from what I have read, I believe the Aztecans had the greater influence on the most common Mexican dishes we enjoy today. But, that's just my guess and who really cares. It is all authentic Mexican food. Well, except for "Cali Style". I was reluctant to try Maya. The pictures of the food looked as bland as a bowl of oat meal. The food at Maya is a very mildly spiced version of authentic Mexican food. If you are looking for TexMex or OkieMex heat, spice and chili powder you will be disappointed. They do have a salsa picante that will light you up though. It was the perfect additive that made Maya's good food, great food. My wife had the Double Quesadilla and I had the Burrito Rey. The Quesadillas (2) were loaded with cheese and delicious steak. The steak slices were tender with a hint of char from an open flame grill. Very good, better with salsa picante. In the middle of the plate a little salad of pico de gallo, guacamole and lettuce. Ok, now, the Burrito Rey, the King! A leviathan of the burrito family. The biggest burrito in Tulsa. Filled with everything the restaurant has. Two plates of food rolled up in a large tortilla and painted with salsa to look like the Mexican flag. Mild Salsa Verde, Queso, and a Salsa Roja. Top it with some of that Salsa Picante and it's a meal. I hurt when I left the restaurant. (Check the pictures) Bigger and better than any burrito that you will get at the "Fresh Mex" place plus you get chips salsa and service. And the food is served HOT on a real plate! Maya is nicely decorated inside with art and scenes of the Mayan culture. No bright primary colors, sombreros, donkeys or cactus. Roomy, the restaurant can handle a crowd. Maya has lunch specials. Daily specials are listed on the sandwich board sign out front or ask your server. Great Lunch, excellent service from Marisela. If you are looking for other Mexican restaurants in the area, check the collection "Jalapeno Highway." I've probably been there.

Yelp
I got the dinner portion(4) of street tacos for lunch, don't judge me. I should've taken a picture but I got to work instead. All I'm gonna say is if you can make a 5th taco out of the droppings from the original 4...you're doing something right. Bonus tip: ask for the hotter salsa, so good.

Yelp
Delicious! Beautiful place love the picture and decorations, everyone was very friendly and our waiter was very attentive. Place is cleaned bathroom are clean and everyone looks sharp. Will definitely recommend this place and food was delicious!

Yelp
I have stopped in here twice this week, both times for dinner. Last night it was after my daughter's bball practice and we were all starving. I love that this is on Main St Broken Arrow, it's a large space once you enter, has a fun feel to it and it's staffed properly. Our waitress was so sweet, very attentive, made sure our drinks were refilled and the food was delish. Would recommend you pop in for a quick bite and stay to enjoy a few drinks!

Yelp
Fantastic New Mexican restaurant!!!! Will not disappoint you. Great quality and service. Come check em out and support a local business.

Yelp
The healthy filete de pescado was excellent! 4 huge grilled tilapia was enough for 2 meals!! The scallop/shrimp/crab topping (or underneath) was a pleasant surprise especially with the tasty creamy chipotle sauce. The steamed broccoli/cauliflower/veges were perfect!! Greeted with very fresh and crunchy nachos. Just ask for more salsa if needed

Yelp
10/10 restaurant! The food was amazing. I got the Doble Quesadilla. One with chicken and one with steak which I highly recommend. Definitely going back!

Yelp
We have eaten at Maya twice now. I was excited to see it go in, because I like the area where it is located. I ordered enchiladas both times, and quite often we get fajitas, which we have not tried yet, but plan to. I ordered one cheese enchilada just to try it, and most places I don't like a cheese enchilada because it's just too much solid cheese, but this one was just right both visits. The decor is very 'Mayan' and interesting. The service was good both times, and especially good last time. I asked the waiter his name, and I believe he said 'Wilson'. The biggest hurdle was that my husband, who generally doesn't like Mexican food actually liked it, or we wouldn't have gone back so soon. It will probably be a place that we frequent on a regular basis.

Yelp
Food came out hot, fresh and flavorful! I had the Queso Biarra tacos, 4 to an order, definitely shareable! So very good, had the best waiter and staff, was not rushed, paid attention and try to make experience enjoyable. The restaurant was bright in color, well decorated and clean. We will definitely be going back to eatsoon

Yelp
I've been to Maya several times and I plan to frequent the place regularly when I'm craving Mexican food. Located in the Rose District where Toast and McKinney's formerly existed, the spacious interior is nicely remodeled. The menu is expansive with all of my traditional favorites included. Great margaritas, wonderful service and very good food. I liked their chips and salsa and we ordered a small guacamole that was perfectly mixed. I love this place and will repeat regularly.

Brittany H.

Yelp
Me and my friend went and just got the reed dip To share which was delicious. We also got drinks, she got a pineapple margarita which she really enjoyed and I ordered a Paloma. I have had many Paloma's before and it was definitely not a Paloma but I drank it anyway. No big deal I didn't complain but it was just a regular margarita. It was definitely slow and our waitress was nice but didn't seem very attentive. It was just ok I wasn't blown away by anything but I would give it another try.

Yelp
The bar is open Late, the kitchen closes at 10. Need to fix the hours on here to prevent any further disappointment.
google avatar

Cynthia S.

Yelp
Unfortunately the food was just not good. The chicken street tacos were oily and bland. The beef street tacos were not good either. I cannot recommend this restaurant they need new recipes to improve. It's disappointing for the Rose District.

Yelp
Amazing Birria tacos. The consume is the most flavorful we've had at any Mexican restaurant in Tulsa. Service was awesome. Happy hour Margaritas were very flavorful. I'll be a regular there!!

Brendon B.

Yelp
My first time here while visiting. Will definitely come back and try another dish. Our waiter was great and the atmosphere was nice as well. Salsa was a little on the "tomatoey" side but the chips were fresh. If you like a little spice that keeps building, get the pork carnitas limon. The was great and they give you enough for two meals! My daughter for the steak birria tacos and they were really good. Happy hour menu was loaded with food and drink specials. Give them a shot when you're in town.

Debi D.

Yelp
We love Maya's! One of our favorites. The steak panino pepper is amazing! Great chips and salsa too! Staff so friendly!

Stephanie P.

Yelp
Just went here for the first time tonight. It was delicious!! The margaritas are great and the fajitas were tender and super flavorful. Also had great service. 10/10 recommend!

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
I love this place. The fajitas were great! Right on the main strip and close to other places to enjoy a drink.

Rick B.

Yelp
Great service. Good Mexican food. Clean restaurant. Nice location on Main Street Broken Arrow.

Yelp
we stopped in for lunch and loved everything! the staff were friendly and efficient, the space is large and spread out (with LOTS of booths indoors as well as outdoor seating), and the food was quick, fresh, & delicious! we tried chips & queso, a crispy beef taco, chicken enchilada, & chile relleno, all of which were well seasoned and cooked to order. prices were very reasonable as well!

Ethan R.

Yelp
Service was horrible. Table on both sides of us got waited on 10-15 times while they skipped us every time. Talked to our waiter 2 times. Didn't get our additional margarita. Would not recommend.

Gary Ann T.

Yelp
We just tried MAYA Mexican and it was very good! I didn't love the salsa, but I like chunky salsa and it is not. The food was good and prices reasonable. You also get a lot of food! I had the shredded chicken quesadillas with beans and rice and had food to take home. Someone else in our party had supreme enchiladas and loved them! The $4 margaritas were outstanding!! Everyone should give this place a try! Great atmosphere and terrific service!

Wyatt W.

Yelp
The food and service were amazing! Good quality, nice layout with plenty of good atmosphere and natural light! Our server was quick and attentive and the food was wonderful. We are not from here but will definitely visit again the next time we're in Broken Arrow.

Caitlin C.

Yelp
Fantastic service, great menu. Fair prices. We went for lunch and thought the lunch portions were just right and the $5 house margaritas were bomb! Can't wait to go back. Would love to see them take advantage of their nice patio, maybe add some umbrellas.

Our A.

Yelp
Service was bad, there excuses was being understaffed. honestly this place didn't wow me . first thing you smell when you walk in is new furniture vs smelling like a Mexican restaurant. ive Also noticed that they like to remove reviews. Which I'll be making a complain to yelp about it
