Maya Taqueria Review - Brooklyn - New York - The Infatuation

"Maya Taqueria is a Mission-style burrito spot in Prospect Heights (with another location in Park Slope) where you can customize your own massive burrito, bowl, nachos, or tacos. They also make quesadillas that always have exactly the right cheese-to-meat ratio, and they serve big platters with prawns, steak, and grilled chicken as well. Try this place for a quick lunch or dinner, or just get yourself some delivery. If you go that route, be sure to request a bunch of their housemade salsas on the side." - Bryan Kim

Came in around 3:30 pm on a Saturday not packed or busy at all and not sure why very good place spotless and clean good amount of space to sit I ordered a strawberry frozen margarita $14 and a steak taco with onions and cilantro $5.50 very good amount of meat they also had a salsa bar where there were 9 different salsas with different heat levels very hood! I paid a total of $24.74 this included the top I left. Would come back to try something else. Good place but I’ve had Mexican food from Mexico and when I ask for onions and cilantro I want onions and cilantro separately places not mixed however still good the steak was good but since it was not make fresh right then and there it was okay I would have liked a little more seasoning but the hot sauces make it better not world class but defiantly good . The margarita was a strawberry frozen it definitely has enough alcohol but it didn’t taste like strawberry tasted more like a classic but not bad at all

Tried this place out for the first time the other day because I work nearby. Dined indoors although I think take out is more popular. I ordered their enchilada with shredded chicken with green sauce, white rice with cilantro, and a side of refried beans. My partner ordered their burrito with steak. I also ordered their horchata. The enchilada was super delicious and I highly recommend trying it. The refried beans were a bit strange since I'm accustomed to them being brown, but the ones served at Maya's were red? They weren't my favorite and were the only thing I left uneaten on my plate. Overall, my enchilada was demolished within 10 minutes. My partners burrito was really good also, their steak made it taste way better. He had gotten the chicken last time and he wasn't very impressed. Their horchata is nice and not watery, but they add that ingredient that makes the drink super starchy tasting, thus leaving a dry film in my mouth and more thirsty. Not my favorite. We also ordered tres leches cakes to go and those were nicely portioned, however, incredibly sweet. We couldn't keep eating it at all. The moistness of the cake was also inconsistent. Some parts of the cake were nicely moist with the condensed milk, and other parts were dry and crumbly. I wouldn't buy it again mostly due to the sickly sweetness of the dessert. I expected it to be more light and fluffy but instead it's just too sugary at the end of the day. This place isn't bad, their meals are mostly delicious, and their staff is nice. The interior was bright and clean, with a few tables in the back. There is also a self serve sauce bar, which is fine, but some customers aren't exactly hygienic so I wish that was kept behind the counter instead of self-serviced. This restaurant is also insanely pricey. I know that given the area and the demographic, Park Slope tax makes all the restaurants in the area more expensive than usual, but this place was $40+ for 2 people!! And mind you, that is including a 10% discount as hospital employees. I think in total we spent over $50 with the cakes to go. I won't be frequenting this eatery but it does satisfy cravings for Mexican food in a pinch. I don't know if i can justify eating here though with their current prices. You would have to have a bigger budget for your weekly takeout if you're going to dine or take out from Maya's. Overall, it's a decent place with pretty good food. Not great, but decent. For their prices, it's not worth the money unless you've got the budget for it. I would rather walk to 5th avenue to Homemade Taqueria for more affordable Mexican food with just as tasty offerings. For fellow hospital employees: they are open late which is convenient for those of us who work evening shift.

The tacos were so juicy and fresh! The tortilla chips are homemade and they have a cute little salsa station. The vibe is definitely California taco but the meat reminds me of the tacos i recently had while at Resort Mayab near Chichén Itzá. Juicy meat, that has been slow cooking for hours! Delicious

This was a nice little place, not fancy. It's not really a dine in place. The tall guy that runs the place is very nice and checked on us. MAYA IMHO is a take-out , order place. The food is delicious and fresh and you must buy the margaritas maybe two. lol 😆 So stop by and get some food, or even better , order in and don't forget the margaritas.

The staff was nice and helpful and attentive 5 stars for the service, the atmosphere was nice 5 star rating, this restaurant is a bit different than your traditional Mexican restaurant, that being said the food was just boarder line ok. Food 3 stars.

Food was bland, soggy, overpriced and slow. Please don't malign my home state by calling in California style. First, lots of sticker shock: every add-on is obscenely upcharged. Like $2 for a daub of sour cream. Second, I waited like a dingus for twenty minutes in an empty restaurant before they realized my order didn't go through. Third, Burrito came out soggy and 95% rice, beans and lettuce. (It cost $19.50. Oof.) One upside is free salsa, which is watery, and comes in containers that are too small to fit a chip into. My rating: Double frownie face :((

Maya has great customer service. Young lady at the checkout is very nice. Location is spotless inside. I find the food incredibly bland and because it’s tasteless this is not worth the prices bring charged. When I think Mexican food from Mexico, it’s fresh, flavorful. Flavorful pico, flavorful rice but the pico literally tastes like nothing. It’s def maya bc the taco truck makes flavorful pico and food. I have visited 3 times before writing this. I want them to be successful but at this time would pick something else for the cost.

Ordered a taco salad to go. Overdressed, relatively tasteless chicken and the tiniest serving of guacamole I think I’ve ever received from a restaurant. Over $20. The ingredients were fresh I guess, but I only ate here because it’s open late. I’ll try the steak next time I’m inevitably up late.

Yelp
Food just as good as the first time I ordered. So upon my second order I tried some tacos, in addition to the shrimp and grilled steak platter. All three full and pack with flavor. I look forward to my 3rd order and trying something different.

Yelp
I ordered from Maya beef flautas and I was impressed by the way was packed the lettuce in the bottom cover with a thin layer of aluminum foil and in top the flautas very unique way so the flautas were crunchy and fresh not saggy because of the lettuce all the salsa and the sides all in a little containers beautiful packaged the flautas very tasty I really enjoyed thanks Maya

Yelp
Decent build your burrito or other mex meal.. we split a big burrito. The salsas were a great option to choose from. Inside seating was spartan - nine cushioned but adequate. Service was good. Ambiance is taco/ burrito bar motif.

Yelp
Food is great. The employees are so nice and helpful. We LOVE this place! We always get the super nachos with grilled steak and its always on point. Even when we order over the phone, the food is always fresh.

Yelp
Great little taco place. I wandered in to get some food for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the space, the staff, and the food. I ordered nachos with steak and onions and it came out hot, with lots of home made chips, and great melted cheese. I was directed to a cool little salsa bar where you can choose from 9 different salsas and grab your Limes, radish, and jalapeños. The chips were solid enough that they were still crunchy an hour later. The steak was cooked well with good flavor and the right texture between soft and chewy to go with nachos. The accompanying guacamole, Pico, and sour cream were packaged individual such that they wouldn't just make the chips a soggy mess after a half hour. Why only 4 stars? I have to go back and try some tacos! They have a fish taco and a chicken taco that I have my sights on but for now, I would highly recommend stopping in and trying them out!

Yelp
Been ordering from Maya Taqueria for years, but may need to find a New Neighborhood Mexican Restaurant. Love the service & Cali menu, but recent orders have been Disappointing. Burritos packed FULL of RICE... Bites & Bites full of Rice with a sprinkle of beans, cheese, lettuce, pico de galo & other ingredients. Charged me for Extra Lettuce & Received Extra Rice! Smh, PLEASE DO BETTER.

Yelp
Get the California burrito and don't look back!!! I'm not usually a burrito gal, but this one blew my mind. Steak and onions, perfection. Everything is made to order, so fresh and so good! Knocking one star off for price, as a Texan a $20 burrito hurts BUT I will definitely get it again.

Yelp
This was my first time dining in, and I was impressed. I loved the wide selection of hot sauces the hottest one had a great taste, though it wasn't too spicy. The employees, who are fellow paisanos, were very friendly, providing excellent customer service. At 5 pm on a Friday, I was the only customer, so the atmosphere was very nice and relaxing. They also have a convenient bike rack, which was perfect for parking my electric bike. Being inside felt like being in Mexico, except the hot sauce could have been spicier. Despite that, I still give this place 5 stars and wish I could have left more tips in the jar

Yelp
Since I have been going to their location on 5th Avenue for ages, I was super excited they opened one closer to me on 7th, and it has not disappointed: the food is tasty, the order is ready SO fast, and everyone who works there has been really nice every time I have gone in. The fish tacos are my favorite, but their burritos are good as well. Also their soups. And their kale, how do they make kale so tasty?

Mary S.

Yelp
Failed to deliver one item of my order. They called immediately after I posted and offered a refund. So I am much happier. The rest of the order was delicious.

Yelp
Food is absolutely delicious, my family loved it. Now have them on auto dial in my phone ,who has a restaurant on auto dial in their phone. I Do! Best in Brooklyn, if not New York.

Yelp
Very welcoming staff. Clean prep area and kitchen. Between the two of us we ordered for a take out dinner: 1 chicken mole tamale, 1 spiced chicken taco, 1 black bean and Spanish rice quesadilla and 1 flan. Everything was delicious and this was plenty enough food for 2 adults. This is a nice addition to the neighborhood. We'll be back for sure.

Yelp
Ordered delivery. The steak platter had great flavor- tender steak and grilled perfectly. And I was impressed that they use actual crema instead of sour cream. Great meal - glad they are in the neighborhood!

Yelp
Recently came here to get some dinner and I was very impressed with the service and food! Ivan took care of me and made my experience an overall great one. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to try it out!
