Tried this place out for the first time the other day because I work nearby. Dined indoors although I think take out is more popular. I ordered their enchilada with shredded chicken with green sauce, white rice with cilantro, and a side of refried beans. My partner ordered their burrito with steak. I also ordered their horchata.
The enchilada was super delicious and I highly recommend trying it. The refried beans were a bit strange since I'm accustomed to them being brown, but the ones served at Maya's were red? They weren't my favorite and were the only thing I left uneaten on my plate. Overall, my enchilada was demolished within 10 minutes. My partners burrito was really good also, their steak made it taste way better. He had gotten the chicken last time and he wasn't very impressed.
Their horchata is nice and not watery, but they add that ingredient that makes the drink super starchy tasting, thus leaving a dry film in my mouth and more thirsty. Not my favorite.
We also ordered tres leches cakes to go and those were nicely portioned, however, incredibly sweet. We couldn't keep eating it at all. The moistness of the cake was also inconsistent. Some parts of the cake were nicely moist with the condensed milk, and other parts were dry and crumbly. I wouldn't buy it again mostly due to the sickly sweetness of the dessert. I expected it to be more light and fluffy but instead it's just too sugary at the end of the day.
This place isn't bad, their meals are mostly delicious, and their staff is nice. The interior was bright and clean, with a few tables in the back. There is also a self serve sauce bar, which is fine, but some customers aren't exactly hygienic so I wish that was kept behind the counter instead of self-serviced.
This restaurant is also insanely pricey. I know that given the area and the demographic, Park Slope tax makes all the restaurants in the area more expensive than usual, but this place was $40+ for 2 people!! And mind you, that is including a 10% discount as hospital employees. I think in total we spent over $50 with the cakes to go.
I won't be frequenting this eatery but it does satisfy cravings for Mexican food in a pinch. I don't know if i can justify eating here though with their current prices. You would have to have a bigger budget for your weekly takeout if you're going to dine or take out from Maya's.
Overall, it's a decent place with pretty good food. Not great, but decent. For their prices, it's not worth the money unless you've got the budget for it. I would rather walk to 5th avenue to Homemade Taqueria for more affordable Mexican food with just as tasty offerings. For fellow hospital employees: they are open late which is convenient for those of us who work evening shift.
