One Year After Fires Devastated Napa and Sonoma, Restaurants and Wineries Are Still Rebuilding - Eater SF

"An iconic winery in Napa that lost its tasting room in the Nuns Fire. They will open a new tasting room in downtown Napa within the First Street Napa complex, making their wines more accessible." - Jess Lander

We loved Mayacamas! Nathan, our host, was awesome —warm, knowledgeable, and incredibly passionate. He made us feel completely at home, even though it was our first time visiting. Each pour of wine was unique, you can tell there's something special about the way they craft their wines here. And the views... absolutely breathtaking. Taking in the mountains and vineyards was calming, beautiful, and exactly what we needed on our weekend in Napa. This is not just a tasting, it’s an experience. 10/10 recommend and visit again. If you’re in Napa, Mayacamas is a must.

This was our first winery stop on our first trip to Napa and we couldn’t have picked a better place to kick off our weekend! This winery didn’t come up in my research but was last minute recommended by a friend and I’m SO GLAD we could get a tasting reservation. It was by far the top winery we went to. Here are the highlights… and there’s a lot! - drive up the mountain - gate entrance was dreamy! - greeting from David our sommelier - the grounds - the weather ended up being so gorgeous we could see San Francisco in the distance - ATV ride up to our first tasting - I learned here I love Chardonnay - final tasting we got some privacy to enjoy just the two of us - the knowledge David shared with us and his genuine care for our questions and interest in what he was sharing with us SO many highlights but truly David made our entire trip. We couldn’t stop talking about Mayacamas! I do wish we could’ve had one more tasting outside on the gorgeous patio but that’s my only note! Thank you all for an amazing time! Highly recommend. Worth the drive. Worth the price.

Google
We only scheduled 2 wine tastings for our short weekend trip in Napa and this was one of them. The winery is high up in the hills and getting there involved a lot of twisty turny roads which is something to consider if you get easily car sick. Upon arrival we were introduced to our guide and offered the use of the restroom before proceeding to our RV tour. They take you further up the mountains and to a scenic view point to talk about the vineyard and sip some wine. Afterwards we went back down to the main building to tour the cask room and try some additional wines. Overall a neat and different wine tasting experience.

Google
David Tijero the hospitality director completely made the most magical beautiful experience for us — we loved the wine, animals, and atv —- the interior design and big windows were amazing the historic oak wine barrels felt like we were in a museum, beautiful to know for getting there: recommend having the most confident driver in your group be behind the wheel to get there, windy roads/spotty service to get there, I went with my love Max and he’s a very good driver but I’d be nervous on my own —- Incredibly luxury and views once arrive and well worth the adventure to up the mountain p.s.s. art collection of the owners is wonderful and they even have a Kosher wine option for Passover, very special

Amazing experience during our private tour and tasting. David our host was extremely knowledgeable and welcoming. He shared amazing details about the history of the Vineyard and was clearly a master of his craft. Taking part of a private 2 hour experience led by a viticulturist with a mastery in hospitality is truly a gift for a couple on vacation like us. The property is located at over 2000ft altitude right in the heart of Mt Veeder and the views are just breathtaking. The entire experience felt very high-end and exclusive; and the wines were to die for. Specially the 2019 Top Block Cabernet Sauvignon. Getting there was a 30-45 minute drive from the valley but absolutely worth it. We visited 4 other wineries during our time in Napa and Mayacamas was by far our favorite.

Google
Mayacamas estate tasting was one of the most rewarding winery experiences we've had. Do the library tasting upgrade for sure since they're known for having very age worthy wines. Definitely a bit of a windy drive up the mountain but very worth it. David was an absolutely amazing host. We toured the property via atv. Stunning views and awesome to see how they adjust to the terrain up there. Cool wildlife and other foliage around too. Beautiful area to have some tastes on the property. Toured their barrel room. And then tasted some libraries of their cans back at the estate. Loved perusing the library book they have - we ended up buying a library wine for dinner which was beautiful and preserved so well. Bought some other bottles as well - will be return customers. Very good style of wine - High quality and different from the usual napa excess Stylings.

One of the best winery tour experiences in Napa Valley! I highly recommend a trip out to the estate, which is set high in the hills on a beautiful piece of land you’ll tour in an ATV and on foot, exploring the vineyards and cellars while tasting a wide range of excellent wines. Our small group of friends enjoyed an afternoon tour with Nathan and Travis, who were both very welcoming, super knowledgeable, and took great care of us. We loved our experience at the estate so much we even stopped by the downtown tasting room to try some new wines. A can’t-miss Napa winery totally worth going off the beaten path for.

Google
Our wine tour guide Chris made our entire visit to the Napa Valley area memorable with our visit to Mayacamas vineyard! This was our top vineyard and light years above any other experience we had. The private atv tour of the vineyard and cellar made the entire experience memorable. Chris was friendly and very knowledgeable. It made us appreciate the history and you can feel her passion for current owners and history of this vineyard. Thank you for an outstanding family trip; we will talking about this experience for a long time to come!

Yelp
We visited back Napa back in September and I am finally getting around to leaving reviews! Our host was David and he was incredibly friendly and gracious. I had been a little stressed at the beginning because we were running about 7 minutes late, but he didn't make us feel pressed for time during our tour + tasting. We opted for the Estate Tour + Tasting at the estate location and this was by far the most beautiful property and views we saw during our trip. If you are visiting Napa and have never been to Mayacamas, then you must add it as a destination during your trip! The mountain views were incredible and since it was such a clear day you could see the bay over the valley. We got to have a small wine tasting at the top of the property and then taste wine from the barrels in the barrel room and then finish off with a tasting inside. We ended up purchasing a bottle of their Chardonnay to drink back at the Airbnb after dinner. David also told us there were goats that they have on the property to help with landscaping, etc, but sadly they were on the other side of the property the day we were visiting. Who wouldn't love a wine tasting with goats frolicking around?

Yelp
The view is spectacular, but the service was extremely rude and uninviting. Dave (manager) was so unwelcoming and rude. We have been to 8 high end wineries this trip and really were looking forward to a visit to Mayacamas for the ambiance and wines and were severely disappointed. A little bit of customer service would have gone a long way. Cross this one off your list.

Yelp
Lovely grounds at this storied vineyard. We had a private jeep tour going up over the mountains, and tasting in the private tasting room. We visited because of the scenery from A Walk in The Clouds and enjoyed our visit. The wine is pricey due to being family owned and made in small batches, but tasty! I recommend a visit to this lovely vineyard!

Yelp
This was the most amazing experience for a wine tasting we've ever experienced. David T. was a most gracious and generous and knowledgeable host. He took us around on a covered four wheeler to different vineyards on the 500 acre property, with tastings at each stop of their Chardonnays, which were the best we've ever had. Spectacular views at high elevations. Epic. We toured the barrel seller with 100 year old barrels and more tastings. We met Cash the vineyard dog who loves breadsticks. We ended with a private tasting in their elegant dining room. From start to finish the hospitality and care went above and beyond. Tip: hard to get ride share up there because it is more remote. Schedule a private cab service to and from. They also can assist with this recommendation and it worked very well for us. The highlight of our trip to Napa.

Yelp
The property is absolutely gorgeous, the ATV tour was a unique, and delightful experience. Maybe our host was not having a good day, or maybe he could tell we were wine novices? Either way, the man with the salt and pepper, long hair, tied back in a ponytail, who never even told us his name, was pretty awful. I don't expect to be given an entire lecture on the history of the property and the wine making process, but JFC show a little enthusiasm. He came off really snobby and left my party of four with a taste of sour grapes in our mouths. There were parts of the tour that felt rushed, and the fact that he didn't ask our names nor did he give us his was very unsettling to me. We visited 7 wineries over the course of 3 days and all other hosts we encountered were more than hospitable, and excited to teach us wine novices new things.

Yelp
I love the 4 wheel drive trip. It was above and beyond. The views from the top were incredible. Worth the adventurous drive 100%

Yelp
One of a kind experience in Napa. Warm and knowledgable staff, great wines, and beautiful estate - highly recommended. Commit to due diligence when planning your mountain visit i.e. transportation, travel time, weather, etc. This winery is off the beaten path and rewards prior planning.

Amber B.

Yelp
We had a fantastic time during our tasting. It offered a unique tour of the vineyard and our guide, David, was very friendly and knowledgeable. I loved hearing about the wine making process from the perspective of a viticulturist. David made the experience enjoyable for all four of us on the tour, even though we had very different levels of familiarity with / exposure to wine and the winemaking process.

Yelp
Long drive. Expensive. Rude staff. I suggest avoiding this establishment as there are many more wineries in Napa that are much better.

Yelp
This winery in the hills on the border of Napa and Sonoma is just gorgeous!! Be warned, it is a trek/ curvy drive up... DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE (ever!!) but especially not with this one... It burnt down in a fire in 2017, and they are currently in the process of rebuilding. The grapes were untouched by the fire, and the wines were amazing!!! They still offer a great experience, with golf carts to the lookout point and also to the vineyards.

Yelp
We came here with my cousin's almost a year ago, going through some old pictures, we had a good time, it was raining like it is now - cats, dogs, and sheep! It's a beautiful place that's been around for a long long time. I carried these wines on many wine lists going back to the late 80's - WoW! Old guy alert, they were made rich, dense, complex, with drinkability but meant to age as few wines are anymore. They got a new winemaker, I'm guessing 2013 and the wines in my honest opinion are not as beautiful as they once were. The older vintages that we were honored to experience on this visit were gorgeous classic Cabernet blends, made similar to Bordeaux with Cabernet Sauvignon, and smaller amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petite Verdot. I found the newer vintages to have slightly more acidity (not a bad thing), and more expressive fruit, made in the style of today's wines that will please many people sooner, than later. More ripe cherry and blueberry, less cedar, cassis, plum and saddle leather. I love me some saddle leather - it's a wonderful nuance in a great Cabernet (predominant with this grape varietal). Therefore, do not hesitate to check them out, they continue to make wonderful wines - more akin to this era than last. Perhaps I'm just reminiscent of the old classics you find at the wineries that have been around for 40 to 50+ years.

Yelp
Some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon you can get in Napa from tastings open to the public. Servers are exceptionally polite.

Yelp
Mayacamas Vinyards is not to be missed if you're a Mount Veeder aficionado. My husband and I are new members at the winery and were hosted recently by sommelier and viticulturist in training, David. If you have the opportunity to visit and spend time with David specifically with a tasting, I can't think of a better introduction to Mayacamas. The Chardonnay is beautiful, of course. As red wine lovers, though, a tasting of Cabernet spanning 20 years with a expert, and a tour of the estate with its ramped-up sustainable practices, was an elegant learning experience.

Yelp
We are visiting Napa for the first time but have been members of several San Diego area wineries over the years. We are on day 4 of a wonderful Napa trip. We already had a great seated tasting this morning at Chandon and then a fun picnic lunch with a great bottle of Sauvignon Blanc at V. Sattui. We then decided take a drive and head to Mayacamas Mountains and the Mayacamas Vineyard/Winery. We made the mistake of not looking online until right before we got there. It was reservation only but many Napa wineries have taken walk-ins. We have had reservations about half the time this week but still decided to try and have a tasting. There was literally one other car in the parking lot but they refused us any service. They did offer us water as it was 95 degrees outside. When we sat down to drink it before heading back down the mountain, we were asked to leave because those empty seats,of which there were dozens, were for people with reservations. I literally have never been treated so rudely. It was truly lovely in the mountains. I wish we could have enjoyed some nice wine in a completely empty winery which was open.

Yelp
This is an iconic Napa property that has been delivering classic wines for decades. Yes it is off the beaten path of Napa and Sonoma's main winery drags - a good thing - and yes it is a drive up Mt. Veeder and a bumpy dirt road. But it is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The wines are beautiful, age almost indefinitely (the 75 cabernet and 92 merlot were awesome) and offer an old world style to offset the typical big rich Napa product. The property itself remains largely unchanged (see photos) and winemaking techniques have only been modestly modernized. While the property and winemaking duties changed hands in May 2013, the new stewards are determined to maintain the wine style and minimize intervention. Significant effort is being made to revitalize the vineyards and to sustain the essence of this 480+ acre property atop Mt Veeder. We hope Mayacamas maintains for another century.

Yelp
It's a rare treat to visit an American winery that's more than a hundred years old and walking through Mayacamas is like stepping back in time. Getting there is a challenge - up winding, one lane roads surrounding by brilliant nature that was sadly marred by the 2017 forest fires - but once you arrive you're transported to a zen experience where the winemakers take the time to explain the steps that go into making some of the country's best wines. We saw barrels from the 1920s, a home from the 1800s, and rows upon rows of grapes grown in a tradition that goes back to the Roman era.

Mike D.

Yelp
Visited the estate after several days of tasting around the valley. Our tired palates were immediately revived by the superlative wines Dane shared with us. An excellent, passionate and expert host he drive the four of us around the mountain property and educated us to the 200+ year history of viticulture and winemaking there. One of our personal top 2-3 visits out of dozens in Napa/Sonoma over the years.

Joe W.

Yelp
I don't get the buzz at all about this winery. Good wine for sure, but was expecting more, much more, especially for what they charge for tastings and wine pricing. I think they are catering to the tech crowd (or what's left of them) as the people we spoke to were newbie wine drinkers. I'll stick with my tried and true favorites in the area.

Collin G.

Yelp
Despite booking well in advance, they cancelled our tasting reservation last minute without explanation which left us scrambling to book another winery.

Yelp
And now for something completely different. Way up on the mountain, you find yourself in a different environment. The wines are distinctive, by which I mean they have there own style, and it's wonderful. If you can arrange for Tessa to host you, and book on a clear day, she may take you on the ATV tour up to the overlook, where you find a vista unlike any other in the valley. This may not be the spot for the novice, but for someone who truly appreciates the sense of place that is Mt. Veeder, or wants to learn more about it, visit Mayacamas.

Bethany D.

Yelp
Lovely little winery. We spent a couple of hours up there, and rode around the entire property by golf cart. It was absolutely delightful, and the wine was scrumptious! Thank you for making our birthday weekend in Napa wonderful!
google avatar

Lynn C.

Yelp
Had a fantastic tasting experience with Tessa during our tour. We drove up on a Friday in February to avoid the crowd, and Tessa was the perfect hostess. We got a tour of the property, went up to the mountains, hung out in the cellar, walked through the wine making facility and ended up tasting 5-6 different wines with our knowledgeable host. Everything was very conversational, casual, but the wines spoke for themselves. These wines are for those who have the patience to cellar them for years (I can only hope that we have that patience). We bought a a few bottles for ourselves and our family. Can't wait to return and visit them again when their new tasting room gets built.

Kerry S.

Yelp
I found a bottle of 1968 Mayacamas Late Harvest Zinfandel that I've had since the early 70's laying peacefully in my basement along with some other old wines including a couple magnums of 1976 Mayacamas Cabs (got to drink those soon I think). Anyway we took a chance and brought it to a wine tasting last Saturday to see if it held up. Great news, it was spectacular! Like a well aged vintage port we had it after desert and everyone agreed it was amazing how well it stood the test of time. The cork came out intact using an ah-so and it threw very little sediment. Just wish I had another!

Yelp
I guess Ive caughta Mayacamas after a recent changing of the guard in the last year. The estate director is a very nice ex French Laundry wine guy and poured us a 1989 Cabernet. Think something deep that pairs with wagyu beef, onion, and savory beans. We got to talking about his old days in hospitality and how different it was to be at a winery that's got him traveling. Not short after that I was at Levi's Stadium, the new 49ers home and saw the Mayacamas bottles in one of the hospitality suites..well if it's good enough for the 49ers....

Yelp
Lovely people making lovely wines. You can really tell that the people there are really passionate about wine and are in it to share their love with others. They make Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. I didn't taste the Pinot, but all the others are easily on a par with the best wines I have tasted. Their style leans to soft, refined, complex wines. No fruit bombs here! These terms are tossed around a lot, but Mayacamas really produces an elegant, graceful, nuanced and eminently drinkable wine. As a bonus, their wines are also very well priced (for Napa) and are an unbelievable value given the quality. In my opinion their wines are far better than the one-dimensional alcoholic fruit bombs made on the valley floor that sell for twice the price.

Yelp
The wine was very nice but sadly the experience was not. They charge $75 per person for a tasting and tour. The tour was interesting but not worth that price. Everywhere else we went that day charged a fee and waived it when we bought wine. Not this place although my husband and I spent $450 on wine purchases and our friends bought at least $200 if not more. Other places we went that day served cheese and crackers with the wine tasting. This placed served water. We would have been been better off to come buy a bottle or two of their finest and share it amongst ourselves rather than pay the tasting fee. To further compound our unhappiness with this place, our host chastised our driver for arriving 15 minutes early. It's not like he had other guests that we pulled him away from and it's not like we didn't spend money buying wine. Nothing here justified that kind of price and that kind of treatment. Plenty of other nice wineries in Napa to choose from. Especially wineries that provide better service and take better care of their clientele without gouging them.

Yelp
BIG MISTAKE!!!!! Seems one needs a reservation to taste and buy at this winery. I did not know. My son and I showed up after the lengthy drive from SF. The woman in the office/tasting room said she did not have time to help us because she had too much paperwork to get done that day. She could fit us in for a tasting the next day. I was in town for one day to see my son so the next day was out of the question. From a business perspective -- I've owned my own successful business for 16 years so I think I have some idea about customer service -- you NEVER turn away business. You don't know whether or not that person is going to spend 20¢ with you or $2000. This woman dismissed us like we were her worst nightmare. I know I should have checked their web site to determine I needed an appointment and I did not do that. However, while the customer is not always right, the customer is the one who puts the paycheck in your bank account at the end of the week. I took my business down the road to Hess where we had a very nice tasting and I did spend several hundreds dollars on a wine order. Unless you've made a confirmed reservation and paperwork is not too overwhelming that day, I'd skip this hostile place. I'd give this place no stars but this web site doesn't seem to allow that.

Yelp
A little bit of Europe in the Napa countryside. The wines and views are amazing! The Cabernet Savignon is to die for. Well worth the detour to experience the winery and well worth the price to drink it.
