Mazala Pizza: What to Order at San Jose’s Late-Night New Indian Pizza Player | Eater SF

"Operating from a sidewalk-facing pickup window marked by a striped awning and a large menu, this late-night Indian-inspired spot brings a chaat-driven spin to pies and snacks, with toppings like samosas, vegetable manchurian, and palak paneer, plus saucy tikka masala wings and masala fries loaded with cheese and green peppers. Opened in November 2024 as the brand’s first West Coast outpost, it traces its roots to Jay Patel’s pandemic-era pivot from Chicago’s Moti Cafe to Mazala Pizza, a takeout-friendly concept built on Indian flavors; the California location drops tacos and burritos in favor of sandwiches and wings. Pizzas come in personal naan size or 12-inch thin or pan crust; the palak paneer pizza uses a spinach-based sauce reminiscent of pesto, the masala elote pizza is dotted with charred corn heavily seasoned with masala, and the samosa smash—stacked with crushed samosas and sev over cheese and tikka masala, then drizzled with mint and tamarind chutneys—is a standout and the smartest order at $22 for a 12-inch. Keeping with pizza-shop tradition, there are wings tossed in the same sauces used on the pies, including spicy firecracker and tikka masala, along with fried chicken sandwiches and a panko-crusted paneer sandwich, both finished with pickled onions and a medley of chutneys. Momos come fried or steamed and can be topped with the house sauces plus green pepper, onions, and sev; the fried version delivers better texture, and the moti momos in a zesty mayo-based sauce are a solid bet. Seating is limited through its connection to a downtown food hall—there are tables but not much ambience—and the dining room closes at 9 p.m., while the window runs 11 a.m.–midnight Sunday–Thursday and 11 a.m.–3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays." - Octavio Peña

Highly highly recommend getting a samosa smash pizza on thin crust. We have tried thin crust and pan crust and can definetely say that the thin crust just tastes better. Love the loaded mazala fries, we always get it with our every order.

Loved the food at Mazala Pizza! The flavors were amazing and definitely worth trying. The only downside is that it feels a bit pricey for the atmosphere, but overall, it’s a must-try spot.

Mazala Pizza in San Jose is a must-try for anyone looking to step beyond conventional pizza. This is more than just fusion; it's a vibrant, delicious experience that truly leans into authentic Indian flavors. The overall impression is one of high-quality ingredients and unique flavor profiles. We ordered two specialty items, the Paneer Tikka Pizza and the Samosa Chaat Pizza, and both were bursting with character. The Paneer Tikka Pizza was truly exceptional. It was intensely flavorful, but the secret weapon here is the spread—which feels much more like a rich Indian chutney than a typical pizza sauce. This chutney was extremely tasty, lending the entire tikka pizza an interesting and deeply satisfying flavor that makes it stand out from other Indian-style pizza joints. The Samosa Chaat Pizza is arguably the most unique offering. It is exactly what it sounds like: the complex flavor profile of samosa chaat—sweet, tangy, and spicy all at the same time—layered onto a pizza crust. As a first-time eater of this creation, I found it to be a bold and unforgettable experience. While I wasn't personally a huge fan of the chaat elements on a pizza, my wife absolutely adored it, proving it's a wonderfully divisive, conversation-starting dish. If you appreciate genuinely unique and highly flavorful food, Mazala Pizza is highly recommended for its commitment to authentic and interesting Indian flavors.

A hidden gem in downtown San Jose I found this spot while making an effort to try new places in the city, and it quickly became one of my favorites. Being a window in the wall adds to its charm, with the option to sit outside or inside the public food hall right next to the window. Not to mention the friendliness of the staff, especially with Drew always happy to talk you through on deciding what to order depending on your preferences and dietary restrictions. You can tell he really cares about the service he provides and making Mazala Pizza an important part of the community. The half off and bogo deals on different items throughout the week make it a perfect option for a college student or anyone on a budget, which was why I was able to try pretty much every item on the menu the first week I started eating here. Their mainstay, being the tikka pizza, is always a top choice given its unique flavor and generous amounts of protein and sauce, and tastes even better especially at 2 am after a night out. The wings are generously coated in sauce, the chicken sandwiches are perfectly crispy and the Tuesday bogo bowls make it easily a smarter and tastier decision than Chipotle’s burrito bowls hands-down. You really can’t go wrong with any of the food items. My personal favorite has been the mazala fries. I’ve never been to a place that’s been able to serve fries with the so-called “perfect texture”, where it’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. This, coupled with their seasoning blend makes it easily one of the best in the city. I’ve genuinely never had cravings for fries until I tried the ones here. The quality of the food, amazing deals throughout the week, plenty of vegetarian options, and the friendliness of the staff makes this easily a soon-to-be staple of the local downtown food scene.

The smashed samosa pizza is phenomenal. Some of the best Indian fusion pizzas I've had in Cali. The firecracker momo had way too much firecracker sauce but tasted great.

food was incredible and workers were soooooo incredibly fun and kind! i was skeptical because a lot of indian-american fusions are never really appealing to me but this was amazing and flavorful and incorporated all aspects of South Asian flavors and food. we got the tikka flatbread 12inch pizza and the masala fries and these r the besttttt masala fries ive ever had. definitely a must-try for desis in the bay!
