Me and my old high school girlfriends (aka the Menopausia Girlz) had just attended a funeral and were looking for a place downtown to eat lunch. Me, "let's do Mexi." Marilyn, there's a Mexican restaurant down the street I've been curious about for years, let's go." I thought I'd tried all the inner PDX Mexican restaurants and was surprised I'd never been here. I'm a vegetarian and know that there are regional differences in what is served at Mexican restaurants; I require salsa & chips, which some places don't serve. Preferring a booth over a table & chairs situation, we were quickly seated at a comfy booth, and our margarita order was taken instantly. Half of my Mexican dining satisfaction is based on the taste of the house salsa, and if it is a chile de arbol base, I'm not a fan. Big bowl of chips with several cruets of dark red salsa arrive, not chunky like a common pico, but well blended and not watery. OMG! What a fabulous, richly flavored like a tomato sauce with a nippy finish salsa they serve! One of the best in town as far as I'm concerned! Our waiter, Junior was attentive and said that he too loved the salsa there. On the lunch menu there was an enchilada w/rice and beans that was reasonably priced-sauces tasty, delicious! The other half of my dining satisfaction is based on the taste and strength of the margarita- it was not too syrupy, had nice zippy lime flavor, and the tequila quantity was fine. The girlz and I were so pleased with each others' company and the food that I forgot to notice the decor or if authentic music was in the background. This place earned an A+ from me, I'll be back!
