"This ever-crowded Mexican American restaurant on West Burnside has been a pre- and post-game dining destination for years, thanks to its proximity to Providence Park. At the large wooden bar and diner-style booths, as well as at the fenced-in patio, Timbers and Thorns fans polish off goblets of margaritas and heaping platters of enchiladas, tostadas, and refried beans and rice. It’s always a bit of a party here, like when fajitas are brought to the table sizzling in scorching hot cast iron skillets, but after a local team win, it gets downright raucous." - Alex Frane, Thom Hilton

Comfortable atmosphere, killer margaritas, tasty Mexican cuisine, and great portions! Can't wait to be back next time, thanks Mazatlan PDX!

My group of 15 people meet there once a month. We enjoy the friendly servers and good food. Great atmosphere and lots of seating. It's also nice to use their nice parking lot because parking can become an issue downtown!

Our waiter was so sweet and attentive and the food was incredible 🤤 Maybe the best guacamole I've ever had that I didn't make myself. Thank you for the amazing birthday dinner!

Google
Great service, food came out quick and was awesome. Classic Mexican Restaurant style, the burrito was topped (which means eating by hand is not an option). Good vibes, the sunken floor plan with tips of glass walls and ceiling was really cool. Worth the trip.

Google
Fajitas tasted like sweet and sour chicken…I am honestly not sure why it was so sweet. Also had large mushrooms in the fajitas that were pretty wet and squishy. I really wanted to like this place especially since La Carreta shut down. The service was great, everyone was friendly. Maybe it’s more for drinks/cocktails.

This is my favorite Mexican Restaurant in #Pdx! The rice is as close as I can get toy Mother's rice, she's been passed over 12 years. At Mazatlan on Burnside - it's like a vacation. They have Karaoke on the weekends also - which I too, also love. The food is quality, substantial and huge portions. I love their Fajitas - but today I got the combo #4 plate for lunch, and a Pacific on Draft. Luis - amazing people person. So wonderful and nice. He took my work stress away with his wonderful hospitality. You will really enjoy this Mexican Restaurant. When I was a kid - this was a swanky joint called, 'Bill's Gold Coin'. It was a legend in itself in our town. Highly recommend Mazatlan and Luis, will be your bartender.

Google
I always have a great time at this spot! The food is always on point, and the service is top-notch. It's my go-to place for watching the Timbers ⚽️ games. A pre- or post-game drink is a must! Conveniently located to Providence park, you can't lose. Check this place out if you are nearby or looking to catch the game.

Google
The thing that made the experience stand out the most was the service. Our server was attentive but not over bearing. Even though we were sitting outside. The prices were fair and the drinks are good. We will be returning again.

Yelp
I got together with a group of friends last night at Mazatlan and had a wonderful time. the staff here went above and beyond to make us feel not only welcome but that they were truly glad we came in for dinner. The food was incredibly and the staff open and welcoming and exceeded my expectations. I would highly recommend Mazatlan if you like Mexican food. Susan

Yelp
This place was near our hotel so we decided to give it a try. The staff was friendly and the service was great. Chips and salsa were fresh along with the food we ordered. Their tacos were very good and so were the rice and beans. I appreciated that the ground beef was not super greasy !

Matt S.

Yelp
This place is about what you'd expect which is Tex Mex. It was solid and as long as you know what to expect going in it's totally fine. The portions are good size. Our group had enchiladas and I had a carne asada burrito. This place gets very busy before and after Timbers games and they have solid drink specials too so it's a good place to hang before or after. The food prices may be a tad on the higher side for this place is but I've always gotten friendly service here and like I said it's a good location.

Marilyn H.

Yelp
Food is amazing! My boyfriend and I went here last minute before seeing a show, the food tasted great, very glad we decided to stop in.

Luisa T.

Yelp
Food is very good and great customer service! Chicken enchiladas and the pork carnitas is a favorite!

Rachel M.

Yelp
I was eating dinner and saw the owner of the restaraunt violate a young girl's space who was picking up an order. I felt so bad I had to console her afterwards she was deeply upset. I don't want men like this serving children food.

Camille B.

Yelp
Me and my old high school girlfriends (aka the Menopausia Girlz) had just attended a funeral and were looking for a place downtown to eat lunch. Me, "let's do Mexi." Marilyn, there's a Mexican restaurant down the street I've been curious about for years, let's go." I thought I'd tried all the inner PDX Mexican restaurants and was surprised I'd never been here. I'm a vegetarian and know that there are regional differences in what is served at Mexican restaurants; I require salsa & chips, which some places don't serve. Preferring a booth over a table & chairs situation, we were quickly seated at a comfy booth, and our margarita order was taken instantly. Half of my Mexican dining satisfaction is based on the taste of the house salsa, and if it is a chile de arbol base, I'm not a fan. Big bowl of chips with several cruets of dark red salsa arrive, not chunky like a common pico, but well blended and not watery. OMG! What a fabulous, richly flavored like a tomato sauce with a nippy finish salsa they serve! One of the best in town as far as I'm concerned! Our waiter, Junior was attentive and said that he too loved the salsa there. On the lunch menu there was an enchilada w/rice and beans that was reasonably priced-sauces tasty, delicious! The other half of my dining satisfaction is based on the taste and strength of the margarita- it was not too syrupy, had nice zippy lime flavor, and the tequila quantity was fine. The girlz and I were so pleased with each others' company and the food that I forgot to notice the decor or if authentic music was in the background. This place earned an A+ from me, I'll be back!

Alejandro S.

Yelp
This is my go-to spot for Mexican downtown. I'll even drive in from the 'burbs. I highly recommend the sopa de albodingas or even better the burrito colorado. The colorado sauce is the perfect balance of sweet and hot, and I generally try a colorado sauce whenever I find it. This is the perfect place before or after a Thorns or Timbers game at Providence Park just across the street. It has outdoor seating and can accommodate large groups.

Blake D.

Yelp
I always get great service whenever me and my wife go there, inside is gorgeous and the food is delicious!

Caroline F.

Yelp
Mazatlán has evolved from a family standard stop to an essential family favorite. The beans are creamy heaven. The bottomless salsa is bright, fresh, and flavorful with a dependable kick. Guacamole is an essential added flavor bomb. I am committed to any delivery of their Beef Colorado - be it in a plate, burro or enchilada. It is was love tastes like. And on the weekends, they have a Carnitas special - it's scrumptious - nice char on the meat but still tender inside - comes with all the possible fixin's - and the portions are massive. Hubby and I share one order and have leftovers. The service has been dependable and friendly as well.

Mason B.

Yelp
Very traditional Mexican restaurant with a pretty sizable menu and great cocktails. The staff was friendly and efficient, the decor was lively and the music was fun and upbeat. I started with a 16 Oz frozen blackberry margarita to accompany the complimentary chips and salsa and it was fantastic. Also, I think the salsa may be house-made because it wasn't the usual "restaurant-style" salsa and it was spicy without being too much and very flavorful. For my entree, I got the Deluxe Burrito Manadero and it was enormous!! They brought the thing out on a huge platter and I was amazed at how much food it was. Also, it tasted fantastic, a lot of beef and cheese and great flavor. Overall, this was a great place to stop in and it's a wonderful choice if you're looking to kick back with a couple margaritas and try out some yummy (and inexpensive) Mexican food. Great place, great vibe!

Melissa E.

Yelp
We met a small group here on May 5th and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The salsa is SO GOOD!! Our server self disclosed the was new but did a great job with a couple unique requests from those in our party. Everything came out exactly as it should and tasted great!!

Darrin D.

Yelp
This restaurant knows what it is: a non fancy place for good food and drink. We've been here twice and found the service quick and attentive, the menu is expansive, and the drinks are strong. I love the feel of a mom/pop restaurant. This one feels welcoming. Lots of dining spots on the patio too. Plenty of bar seating or table service in their large, well worn dining room. I can't wait to go back and try more. The tacos were crispy and well portioned. The enchiladas were good. I have nothing critical to share.

Samantha P.

Yelp
Insanely overpriced and really honestly just bad... We each had a margarita, clearly made with mix - insanely sweet, no balance. Our plates were overpriced and lacked flavor. $20 for three steak tacos that needed salt in greasy, soggy tortillas that hadn't been properly cooked. The chips clearly come from a bag. Definitely not worth stopping in. The only redeeming thing about this spot is it's salsas. They're all pretty bomb, especially the verde. Everything else was whack. Service was kind as well. Too bad the food was so bad.

Joyce D.

Yelp
I had the chicken nachos and the health score makes sense and wish I didn't disregard it.. it tastes it. The chicken literally FREEZER BURNED , has that nasty flavor and was wet and soggy.! There were no beans on the nachos from a Mexican sit down restaurant with two dollar signs which I find crazy., and no lettuce or tomatoes or onion. the most inexpensive things to put on nachos that should be a given. Hardly any chips too much cheese and a small spoonful of watered down sour cream. The salsa was very sweet and watered down tasted canned very different from what another review said but also questioning why it came with a side of salsa anyway some pico would have been appropriate?. I've had better nachos at any dive bar in Portland. In fact, I wish I had just gone to Taco Bell across the street. *DO NOT risk it unless you want good poisoning!! * One bite but I'm crossing my fingers seriously not worth the risk . they clearly are using old meat and there's a reason there's nothing 'fresh' in their food because they can't get away with throwing fresh ingredients in the freezer and thawing it out like they do with their meat. This place should be shut down.

Yacine D.

Yelp
Mediocre food. Water down drinks. You can find better Mexican food else where. I do not recommend.

Kathryn A.

Yelp
This place is your classic neighborhood Mexican restaurant, not pretentious, not stuffy, just good food, great atmosphere, delicious drinks and reasonably priced. Our server was so kinda and gave wonderful recommendations and was so nice. The food is authentic, this restaurant is not trying to be anything it's not. Id seriously give this place a try and don't skip out on a spicy margarita.

Noah M.

Yelp
It was ok but the hamburger bun was just stiff it fell apart and there rice was too sticky and the food took too long

Richard W.

Yelp
Always good food and great margaritas prior to the Timbers game and steps away from Providence park.

Aliciea S.

Yelp
Got food poisoning from the cheese dip and the steak that I ate last night dealing with the after math now and had to send the steak back. Don't recommend

Jo T.

Yelp
The service was the best! Sergio was attentive and friendly. The food was good. I appreciate the care they poured in the food.

Andrew R.

Yelp
We love the Compa China and seafood Jimmy's. Large margaritas are awesome too with tons of flavors. Services always top-notch.

Jared T.

Yelp
We ordered the fajitas what is chicken and shrimp. The play came sizzling and the taste was unique and delicious. The service was quick and polite. Facility was clean. Our water glasses never went dry. In fact they left a picture of water at our table. We stayed at the Park Lane suites and inn. From here it was only a 0.3 mile walk. Would definitely eat here again.

Jason C.

Yelp
I came for a friend's bday dinner. The service was okay, and I appreciated the complimentary bday dessert and musical performance for my friend. The food was generally fresh with generous portions, though I wouldn't say I would crave this place regularly. It all tasted fine though. Generally an okay local option when you want some fresh, affordable Mexican food.

Bodie P.

Yelp
Not sure why this place has such a low star rating but I had a delighful experience. Asked for the carne asada to go and the waiter was very polite and helpful. After receiving the tacos to go he even replaced the lid on my to go Diet Coke because he wasn't happy with the stability of it. When I landed at my destination to eat the tacos and free chips and salsa it was delicious. Well done Mazatlan.

Veronica W.

Yelp
This place is exactly what you would expect it to be and I love it for that. It has so much space and tons of outdoor space when weather permits. The bar area has tons of TVs and a fun vibe for watching sports or just having happy hour with friends. They have tons of fun drinks including all sorts of margaritas. The service has always been good when I have been. Now for the food, it's fine. It's nothing to write home about but it's comforting if you're looking for that messy, greasy, Mexican food with the cheesy beans along side your very cheesy enchiladas. Last time I came, I ordered a quesadilla which is very hard to mess up and they didn't but I will say it was extra greasy but luckily that doesn't bother me. If grease isn't you're thing, maybe don't come here. My favorite thing about my last experience was the outcome of my extra lettuce request. You know how most Mexican plates come with a little mound of shredded lettuce? Well, it's my favorite side to any dish especially a quesadilla so I asked for a little extra and they brought me a huge plate. I thought it was so sweet and ate most of it ha. Prices are fair. I like the vibe here and food is decent, I will always come back here.

Doug G.

Yelp
We always liked this restaurant...it's so pretty inside...and the owner Sergio, he's attentive, friendly, and a real HUNK !

Ariel S.

Yelp
We found this spot on a whim but it was definitely a hidden gem. A cute little mexican joint with great atmosphere and menu options. The front can make you question it, it's not in the best neighborhood but inside makes up for it. The staff is friendly and the margaritas are massive. Prices can be a little on the high end but the portions are big so it makes up for it. You can choose to sit at the bar or in their resteraunt.

Chris G.

Yelp
We were on a short trip and wanted authentic Mexican food. Mazatlan hit the spot. Had Tamale and chili relleno. Wife had fajitas and a margarita. Excellent food. Better than the food was the hospitality.

Olivia L.

Yelp
Pre-Pandemic, an older flaky co-worker of mine asked to meet me at Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant in the middle of the afternoon on a Wednesday. I thought she was going to tell me something important... so I arrived a few minutes early. I ordered my food after a while. I kept checking the sidewalk to see if my older flaky co-worker was going to show up. She didn't ever show... I told you she was flaky. After that I learned that my co-worker was sick. She had previously had Cancer. She later told me that she couldn't taste her food, any of it. She didn't leave a message for me at our Work, either on that afternoon because I went and asked a couple of people if they had seen or heard from our mutual co-worker. I didn't mention how I felt about her not showing up the next time I was working with her. And, she didn't mention it either. The food at Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant is very tasty. I recommend going a little before the evening rush hour starts. It was 2010 when I was last at Mazatlan Mexican Restaurant. I suggest you order the Fajitas, or the Vegetarian Burrito. Also, the MAX, the # 20 bus and another TriMet bus will get you close to Mazatlan's front doors. I suggest you wear you best Black Trousers and not your favorite Denim jeans. And, you should tell your Server that I sent you... she'll/ he'll get a kick out of that! :)

Kathryn C.

Yelp
My daughters and I stopped in for a late lunch 2 days ago. We were greeted and sat right away. Our order was taken quickly, and the food arrived quickly too. Everything was delicious. The thing that we loved about this place was how attentive everyone was. They checked on us several times throughout the meal. It was so nice, they really cared about making sure we were happy and had everything we needed. I've gone to way more expensive/fancy places and not had the level of service that the folks at Mazatlan showed us. The combo of great food, nice atmosphere, and absolutely over the top fantastic service will definitely bring us back there again!

Dawoud K.

Yelp
One of our favorite local restaurants! Very friendly service and great food. Would highly recommend!

Star M.

Yelp
When I first read these reviews, I was confused because I hadn't had a negative experience here, tho at that time I had visited only once. But now, I think I can understand. The name on the ticket is Carlos17, and I've gotten him the last two times I've been here. Always a slight attitude, won't look me in the eyes, and places my food down like he can't wait to get rid of it. This is sad because I live for Mexican food and all these joints around me just keep disappointing. The other servers here tho, the young kids they were so nice.

Randall T.

Yelp
The food was excellent. We got delivery service and we were impressed by the quality and quantity of the food. We will order from here often from now on!

Katharine G.

Yelp
I've been going to this restaurant for years. The service is always very good and fast. Even when they are very busy! Food is delicious, salsa is spicy, big portions, and consistently yummy!

Brook C.

Yelp
As a vegetarian, I've only had great experiences at Mazatlan. One of my meat-eating friends has made comments about not enjoy the food here, but that's just not the case for me. Veggie burritos, veggie fajitas.. I've tried it all and it's dang good! Regardless, give their food a try and decide for yourself. Also, margaritas. Need I say more?

Mike R.

Yelp
Honestly the food is good, the bar is fine but there is an inherent disdain for certain customers. Not all the employees just a few of the long term (older) people are down right rude and disrespectful. I loved this place forever until I realized they really didn't like me for no apparent reason. I always tip 20-30% and have never written a bad review. Just not a good vibe! I wouldn't waste your money or time on these people

Karla M.

Yelp
My waiter was Jose Luis. He was so kind and made sure everything was a 10. I ordered the molcajete. It was AMAZING. The shrimp a la crema was so delicious. I also ordered the Hawaiian marg. It was also delicious. This place is always amazing, and Luis made everything perfect. Thank you

Phyllis W.

Yelp
The star of the show was the Chile Colorado. It is awesome, and pretty difficult to find! Flavors were excellent, meat was very tender. Loved everything that came with it... beans, chips, salsa, guacamole. Loved the salsa... had a kick but not too much. We also shared the Coconut Shrimp and loved it as well. Service was excellent. Food was great. Portions huge. Ate way too much.

Daney M.

Yelp
Super delicious and big portions- love the enchiladas such a yummy comfort food! Walked here after getting my Covid booster to reward myself!

Gabby F.

Yelp
I've been multiple times and have always experienced the same consistency in terms of good food and service. This most recent visit was after a Portland Timbers game-we came hungry and ready to go. It was a nice night so we sat outside in front of the restaurant. A man with enough confidence and politeness to be the owner (he never directly said but I'm pretty sure he was) greeted us, set us up with waters, chips and salsa, and gave us enough time to look over the menus. He was very friendly and personable, even cracking a few jokes. The food came out fast on plates that were blazing hot, and with each bite of my chicken fajita I sunk into a happier and happier food daze. The chicken and veggies tasted very fresh and cooked well-not overdone and not soggy. I always appreciate when there's still a little crunch to the bell peppers. Generally I get (at least one) margarita but it was already 10 when we got there and I start work early in the mornings. But if YOU go, their classic Cadillac margarita is delicious and big! Go wild. I've never actually been to the real Mazatlan, but I sure did get a good taste of it.

Aubrey S.

Yelp
Got takeout tonight and !!! Go Mazatlan! Chicken enchilada and beef chimi were so good. I don't know what... new management, chefs, ingredients, menu... but it's tasting good over there. Many thank yous! Keep it up:)

Sarah S.

Yelp
I've been coming here for a few years, I like the food, the service, and the ambiance! I like the giant margaritas too! The enchiladas are tasty and so are the chips and salsa. I'm planning on getting some to-go food from here today to celebrate Cinco de Mayo since we can't eat at the restaurant due to social distancing :)

Cony B.

Yelp
The food is very good and the drinks too. I would recommend coming to Mazatlan if you're looking for great Mexican fare.

Rod S.

Yelp
One of the better Mexican restaurants I have eaten here in Portland. Sure the location and ambiance are not the greatest, but it has some really good food, some great service and an all around fantastic dining experience. My wife and I, along with two of our friends had dinner there last night. The waiter was helpful, courteous, competent, and very friendly. The decor was serviceable, but you can tell they spent the money on the quality of their food and drink. I had the Pork Carnitas special they serve only on the weekend, along with a 21oz regular margarita on the rocks, and a lemonaid. My wife had the fried fish, my friends had the seafood enchilada and the Ceuvous Rancheros along with a prawn ceviche' . The chips were warm and fresh, the salsa delicious, and our main courses were wonderful and had GENEROUS portions. It was a very nice dining experience all around. The outer and some inner decor could use some TLC and it is a bit of a challenge parking there at times, but the food (at least the dishes I had) more than make up for it and the service made the meal much more enjoyable. I would recommend it.

Steve C.

Yelp
7/27/21. Fast and excellent service. We had a party of 8 near closing time and a dog. The patio was perfect. The food came fast and huge portions. The service was terrific. Well done.

Eva J.

Yelp
Very nice place, very good food and kind and fast service. We have had vegetarian burritos and classic margeritas.

Lisa G.

Yelp
Being from Texas, well, let's just say I am Tex-Mex snob when it comes to eating out. I was a little leary to go to a Mexican Restaurant in the Pacific Northwest, but when your friend says let's go, you go. Carlos and his staff are very friendly and personable. We ordered a chicken Taco and Chicken Chimichunga. The portions are hefty and the food was delicious. I was pleasantly surprised. My daughter is moving to the area in a few months and was very happy to find a place to remind her of home when she needs a little Tex-Mex fix, she will definately be back.

Yasmine V.

Yelp
LAURA IS AMAZING!!!!!!!! best service EVER. enjoyed everything! the food is delicious! she was so fast, smiling the entire time, took GREAT care of us! came from california, next time we come to portland we will eat here and request LAURA! had the best birthday lunch.

Rebeccah H.

Yelp
My only complaint was that I ordered tacos crispy (vs soft) and they came with the store bought cheap cardboard shell. Really random and not good. Otherwise, my margarita was tasty, as was everything else - chips, salsa, beans, rice. The shell really threw me off though... first one even tasted stale, the others the juices and heat from the chicken made the bottom soggy and fall out.
