We were just passing through for the drive back to St. Louis from the Phoenix area on a Monday right before dark so pulled in and booked through booking.com app. We needed a larger room with a separate area from the living room since we were all traveling with a 10 month old, 3 adults & a 15 yr old. They were very friendly from check in till we left, we booked a 2 queen room with a pull out couch + they had a portable pack & play. We just added a thick blanket on the bottom. Beds were very comfy, fridge/coffee pot & a small sink/microwave. We had a decent dinner in the restaurant, they do also have a grill where you can get a burger/dog or sandwich. Soft drinks Free for people gambling, we did just a bit & in the morning the oldest son hit $50 on a couple spins on a 7 slot machine to pay on our breakfast which was Very good & low priced. Overall the place was perfect for a quick night stay & placed perfect since we were tired & it was late. If we would ever have to pass through here again this would be #1 on our list to stop, stay & play. They do also have concerts in their event center attached.

My Husband And I stayed from Friday-Monday and it was amazing! Casino is great. The Cedar Ridge Restaurant was Delicious. We had lunch(wings and potato skins) and dinner( country fried steak, soup, and coconut shrimp) everything was delicious and very fair priced. The staff were extremely welcoming. Definitely will book again!

Went to Cedar Ridge restaurant and Janet the manager was fabulous! She was all over, sat us, brought out drinks, our food, and even our bill after eating all while cleaning off neighboring tables. Which was a good thing since our waiter literally took our order (which he didn’t explain salad bar or fish fry - our first time and had no idea where it was) and never saw him again except taking other tables drink orders. Wanted to give her our tip instead of server but as manager was unable to accept. We gave it to the bartender who came to explain what drinks they offered. Server got nothing.

Absolutely refuse to consider the non-smokers at all in anyway what-so-ever! I have written to this casino with suggestions offering alternatives so non-smokers would have some rights. Not even a reply. Shame on you! You put your workers and non-smokers in a dangerous situation. You actually charter bus load of smokers to this casino from the valley because down there it’s non-smoking or rooms are completely cutoff for smokers. Any non-smoker who smoked in the past and quit is highly susceptible to acquiring COPD. I have gone to this casino for the very last time. Spent thousands of dollars there. NEVER AGAIN!! All staff are helpful and friendly.

Stopped to eat and gamble for a bit. The food in the bar is excellent, or at least what I had was great which was the country fried steak. Had it twice now and will have it again next time through. Breakfast meal was great as well. Friendly bartenders and quick service. Dealers at gaming tables are very friendly and I enjoy gambling here.

This casino brings in DJ’s to the casino but expect you to sit and listen… I had one drink and thought it would be a good idea to get up and dance because several people were dancing in their seats. Maybe it would encourage people to get up and dance, considering the DJ drives here from the valley and it would make him feel appreciated. I’m sure he gets paid the same no matter what but to be appreciated would be wonderful. And you get kicked out. Asking for Id’s and where I’m going. Great monitoring skills!!

Stayed here 3 days for a family wedding. First impression was the rooms were nice and clean. My boyfriend and I walked around to check out the casino and as I was purchasing a Powerade out of a vending machine, I was asked for my ID. Well my ID was expired and I had my temporary paper one as well that has a barcode they can scan and clearly shows I'm 25. They refused to accept it therefore leaving me unable to gamble or drink at the casino so I pretty much had to stay in the room the whole time. I don't understand how a security guard could be 20 years old and work in a casino yet a 25 year old couldn't drink or gamble. We had nothing but issues with their security. Every time we left the casino and returned we were stopped by security. They wouldn't even let us take water bottles or energy drinks in. They had watched us on their cameras when we were in the parking lot and also watched and followed a family friend all the way back to his room. We felt like we were being watched the whole time, our privacy was evaded, like they had nothing but issues with us, constantly made us feel like we were doing something wrong and definitely not welcomed. The restaurant was okay... seems as though they try to be on the fancier side even though the food was below average. This was the strictest/ rudest casino I have ever been to. They claim themselves to be the "friendliest casino" but will only have problems with every little thing you do. Just because security greets you when you enter or leave doesn't mean they're the "friendliest". I felt as though I was treated as an 16 year old not a 25 year old.

Google
Great place, super friendly employees. We had a great experience. Slight mishap with dinner. They forgot about us, but the tasty food more than made up for it. Will dine again!!

Yelp
Came here on a group outing. I must say I'm not a gambler by any means but enjoyed people watching & having a chill day with others from my neighborhood. This is a small town casino. Very nice & quaint. They also offer a restaurant, a bar, & a small fast food type venue for your eating pleasure. Tuesdays are 2 for 20 days, so more bang for your buck at the machines.

Yelp
Clean casino inside, clean restrooms. We spent about 5 hours here, up and down, up and down ultimately losing, no surprises here but we had fun. Liked the craps machine.

Yelp
I was torn between giving this three stars and four stars as far as a hotel goes the rims are clean nicely structured so you have enough space in a living area and the bedroom area. They supply chocolates and coffee and tea and sometimes Coco for people who stay over. It is a casino and the smoke is annoying, and I've tried the restaurant multiple times And not liked what I had.. I never made it when they had the all you can eat crab. And I basically lived at this hotel every other week from February until August, sometimes two weeks in a row. If they would get a better restaurant or two, and they would control their smoke better in the casino I would bump it up to four stars because that does affect the quality of the hotel. I do have to say that the people at the front desk are very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
CHANDRA IS BEST..... the food and low lighting environment was a nice break from heat. Some fun machines and kind people.

Yelp
My husband has gone many times. Clean, food is good, staff is friendly. Fun place to go

Yelp
I was driving with my kids for 12 hours from a family reunion in the woods for two weeks. I got here and it was late and I was tired. So I went in and asked if they had two rooms available. The guy Ryan the night manager acted like I was a very big inconvenience for him to be helping me get some rooms. He was very rude and disrespectful to me. Granted I had been in the woods for 2weeks and probably did not look the best. But when he finally gave me a price and I said no problem and handed over a card to get the rooms. You would have thought he would have changed his tune and acted better knowing I was not some homeless person looking for a free room. Not to mention I really did not even need a room as I had a brand new trailer and truck that I pulled up in but wanted to shower in a real shower and go to bed. This is sad that you treated me this way. Ryan you should not judge a book by its cover. As I will no longer be visiting this place after this evening. Thanks for the humility.

Yelp
This place is awesome in every way. I'm a trucker passing through here 2-3 times a week and they literally have the best food and friendliest staff. I recommend this place, slots payout pretty good and the rooms are really nice. I stay here at least once or twice a month and i really enjoy my time here.

Mike T.

Yelp
Just for one night. Room was nice and big. No issues. Casino sooo smoky. Lots of people smoking. Nasty smell throughout the entire casino. Actually the games looked old. Some didn't work properly. Crab leg night disappointing. Crab over cooked had to fight to get it out in one piece. They need to make it smoke free and fix machines and get a new crab cook.
google avatar

Marie B.

Yelp
We walked in and was greeted by the security guard; nice, friendly man. He asked if we needed help with anything and we said no and he stated "good luck". Walked around and played the slots for awhile. I did not win so I left the donation of cash.

Kurt K.

Yelp
I mainly go to eat At the Cedar restaurant. I feel like I get good meals at a reasonable price. The service has been good as well.
google avatar

Joyce W.

Yelp
We popped in to stretch our legs before continuing our drive up north and from what I could see, it was another local casino for people in town to pass the time and feed the slot machines their money. Covid precautions were in place. Masks are required and a quick temperature check on the wrist was required for entrance. They ask you to pull down your mask and face the security camera real quick before you're let inside. I'm not too sure if they have alcohol or even card games as I left shortly after. I had that creepy feeling where everyone was staring at me (probably because I was like half the age of mostly everyone in there). They must have sensed the scrappiness in me and thought I was up to no good! Nonetheless, stop by if you're in the area. They also have an amazing frybread food truck within their parking lot!

Yelp
always our favorite food every single day, especially every Friday this Friday all you can eat that's my favorite. my husband like habanero chicken wing.

Yelp
Went to the restaurant on Friday night for the fish fry. The shrimp was overcooked. The fish was less than mediocre. The service in the dining room was less than desirable would not recommend this. For anyone,

Yelp
Please do not come early you cannot check in even 10 minutes early, I had my luggage on the gaming floor and security ask me if I was lost really strange I said I'm waiting to check in because there's only one person that cleans all of the hotel rooms
google avatar

Harry B.

Yelp
Charlene was the best at the hotel and Tiffany was great. They were so helpful and let me leave my heavy bag at the hotel. Plus the casino staff was amazing. Thanks again to the great people (including the very friendly and helpful security) at the Mazatzal!

Yelp
Stayed at this location during an event held on the property. Hotel staff was friendly but they have strict rules like check-in times and security protocols, which I didn't really have a problem with. For non-smokers, I absolutely cannot recommend having a room assigned on the first floor of this hotel as the cigarette smoke will penetrate into the rooms on the first floor. This was the only major drawback behind our stay. Also, as others mentioned, their security is a bit on the stricter side and our only interaction was making our kids walk on the colored outer perimeter of the casino floor (again, not a big deal). Aside from that, the Casino floor is small but we had a good time staying here. Food was good and very convenient. If I were to come back, I would definitely stay here again but only if the room is located on the second floor. Nice little casino in Payson, AZ!

Yelp
I'm giving them 1 star because I can't give them 0 stars. the entire trip was a disaster from the beginning. The people who work there - particularly at the sports bar, we're extremely rude. we tipped them 20+ percent, and they were still extremely rude. The food is so-so. The security inept. The machines are old.

Christopher K.

Yelp
The casino is nice security was cooler then the other side of the pillow everything was awesome except for the garbage people running the restaurant and the lady behind the bar had no one to take care of except for me Christopher kussrow I'm pretty sure I know why .. So sad I keep paying for what my piece of crap 4fathers did.. The manager was just as crappy .. It all started when I asked for a beer it was like oh my God why are you here then I ordered a appetizer which came with the worse rib eye I have ever tried and the knives where older then the casino.....
google avatar

Liz P.

Yelp
The dealers are cool here and the pit bosses are ok but the security guards are out of control. They do follow u. I read other reviews and didn't believe them but so true!

Bridgett K.

Yelp
Very bad place , and rude security guy The security guy was so rude when I went in to use the restroom with my emotion support dog. He came at me like he was someone and made me leave when I come in here all the time. We stop here to stretch from driving. I would of been in here for 1 min or so not hurting anyone. I will never come here again and I will tell everyone how rude he is. He should loss his job for treating people like this. I'm sure I'm not the only one he has been rude too. Why can't people be nice to each other anymore. What was this going to hurt, no one was even in there anyway

Yelp
NOT WORTH THE HASSLE!! Signs all over the parking lot say that there's no parking longer than 72 hours. Perfectly fair. And I only wanted to stay about 12. I came, I went inside, used the bathroom, checked to see if there were table games (yes), and then I went back out to my car. I taught a class and then decided to get a drink from the corner store before my next class. I walked two, maybe three aisles over AND I GOT STOPPED BY THE POLICE!! Even the police officer seemed to think he had been sent on a fool's errand. But they were demanding to know why I would park and then walk away. Like I hadn't been sitting in the back of their very empty parking lot with the two other RVs for the last hour and a half and that it wasn't obvious that I was done traveling for the day and needed to stop. In fact, one of the trailers back here is actually unhitched, and when I got here, there was no vehicle. They showed up while I was sitting here, parked in front of their trailer, and went inside it. I wonder if they got pulled over by the cops. I was going to go inside after my class to have dinner and drop a bunch of money at the tables. Not going to do that now. Instead, I am going to cancel my class, get back on the road, and go find some place friendly to stay, some place where they want my money. They obviously don't want it here. You would think a place with such rotten reviews would be nice to the few people who show up, but you would be wrong.

Jon S.

Yelp
1 extra star for the SERVICE. Other than that this is the most god awful casino you'll ever go to. They do all these free drawings for cash, cars to cover up the horrible odds of winning. ALL GAMES continue to get TIGHTER AND TIGHTER. I see CLEAR CHEATING. Fuck this Casino.

Randy B.

Yelp
We went here on a trip thought it would be "fun"I got 30 years of smoking in 3 hours! We thought we would stay in and eat at the resturaunt (mistake) Food was decent but service was less than bad. Unless you are a regular you would be better off going to town.

Yelp
We went to Payson, AZ to visit friends and found this wonderful hotel and casino "Mazatzal". Our stay in Payson was just a couple of days but we loved this little town and enjoyed our little drives throughout the neighborhood. The hotel and casino was perfect. Not Las Vegas size huge, it was just right. Clean, good security staff, surrounding property immaculate and well maintained. The hotel staff (actually ALL of the staff) were warm and friendly and gave very good service. We definitely would stay there again. Payson is a quaint little town, not usually a place you'd put top on your vacation spot. However should you find yourself in Payson, AZ, Mazatzal Hotel and Casino is the perfect place to stay at. The casino was a perfect size for my standard of gambling, the hotel room very clean and comfortable, $2.99 breakfast special very generous, and a nice bar to sit at and relax. Smoking? Well it's a small casino! Hard to avoid unless it's a non-smoking establishment. However the staff is constantly replacing the ashtrays with clean ones to help with the odor and keeping the gambling areas clean. I hope Payson stay as quaint as it is now. They don't need to keep up with the Big towns and have the BIG stores and shopping malls. Not having those is what makes Payson relaxed and kind of healing. We truly enjoyed our brief visit. My only regret . . . I missed Bingo night.

Jimjim J.

Yelp
The rooms are bugged! Was there one time and noticed I could hear my daughter's voice in the bedroom coming through the ceiling smoke detector in the front room. I checked and it's not illegal because they don't go by the same rules as hotels on American soil.

Melissa R.

Yelp
My husband and I made reservations here for our last night in the Phoenix area. The room was huge and very comfortable. We ate at the bar and my southwest salad with chicken was delicious. Hubby had the meatloaf dinner and raved that it was true comfort food. We tried a little roulette, and made a little money. Definitely not much. The weird thing was seeing people smoking in the whole place. It's just not normal these days. So if you don't like smoking, don't go there. The people working there were very nice. Overall a good experience and I'd go back again.

Christian W.

Yelp
The casino is clean, however, EVERY single damn time I've been at the bar, I have had the worst experience from the old woman bartender. She is incredibly rude and has the worst customer service. I won't bring a single dime there again or spend my money at this casino. I'll take my business elsewhere. It wasn't even me that she was rude to, it was every single person. Disgraceful and disrespectful. She needs to be FIRED.

Daffney L.

Yelp
Terrible !!! Thought we were having a great night. Good dealers, good company, a few drinks, winning a little money. Ha ... don't fool yourself. Don't ever plan on going there to win any money. After being there for 7 hours they came up with the lame excuse that we were cut off by the bartender so we had to leave the casino. For two people to have a bar tab of $80 after 7 hours that equates to less then a drink an hour a piece. So we assume the real reason we got kicked out was because we were winning money. We have been to this casino many times before, and lost $$$$ and we were never asked to leave. But of course when you win...bye bye. Beware your not allowed to win....take your money somewhere else.

Cindy H.

Yelp
My review is only if the restaurant as we did not stay here nor did we gamble. We just jumped off the backed up highway to take a break and possibly get some food. We were so pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. We had a really great Asian salad and a Cubano sandwich. Everything was fresh, tasty and very nicely presented.

Yelp
Stayed here a couple nights. Was not a great stay, but not all the fault of the hotel. Employees were super nice, except security guard when we first arrived. He was all over my daughter for ID, and I had to stop him. Said we were going to hotel room. Checkin desk was about 20 ft from us and she wasn't on casino floor. Again, we just walked in the door carrying suitcases. Cool your power trip dude. Room was nice. Air conditioner couldn't be any louder I think. TVs sucked. Remotes didn't work unless you held them so perfectly, they would then work 25% of the time. Next door we had a psycho couple screaming and crying at 2:00 am. We called front desk and they had police come. They pounded on door for about 10 minutes before couple answered. This wasn't hotels fault, but screwed me up for the rest of the day for lack of sleep. Casino was just eh. Some old machines that were pretty tight. Lots of smoke. Ugh. Wish they would outlaw in public spots like that.

Yelp
Booked a 2 night stay here day after Thanksgiving. Decided to come in Thanksgiving night and the casino floor was closed when we arrived at 1am. Apparently the casino is not 24hours. Front desk person said she didn't have any "clean" rooms that night and I would have to come back tomorrow. So we check in down the road at the Comfort Inn. Came back the next day and tried to check in at 2:40pm. Check in is at 3. And again was turned away saying I needed to check in right at 3. (Annoying) so we got the casino floor while we waited and should have ran away at this point! Slots are all old! They have maybe a handful of newer games but everything else is really really old! Old to the point where you have to press really hard on the repeat bet button in order for it to work! None of the games paid or even gave bonus or free games! There was no excitement throughout the little casino because no one was winning! Everyone is "older" and the cigarette smoke mixed with whatever air freshener they try to drown the smoke out with gets into your throat and is just nasty!! Went back to desk to check in and was given a room at the end of a really long hallway! Rooms are big but again everything is old! Room was clean. Had dinner at the restaurant. All you can eat fish fry. Not too bad for the price. Played a little more slots! Still no luck! Back to room to get some rest. Bed was way too soft! No back support at all! We sunk all the way into the bed making it a very uncomfortable night! I ended up laying at the opposite side of the bed for a little more support! Needless to say we did not have a good stay and checked out a day early and will never return to this place! We had a great sleep at the comfort inn compared to here! Place needs upgrades all the way around!

Jessica T.

Yelp
Security is overly vigilant and try to intimidate you if find you to be a threat. They have their own rules and don't abide by state laws, fair enough, it's tribal land, but the level of hostility that they bring to a single rule break situation is out of hand. This creates a very unwelcoming environment, and it seems that having guests there are an inconvenience to the staff working there. No hospitality, at all. They are looking for a reason to kick you out. Caters to elderly people, don't come here if you are or look young.

Sherry P.

Yelp
So disappointed in this hotel and specifically how the front desk employee (Tiffany) treated our family after a terrible situation. We checked out of this hotel at 11:00am and on our travels out, 2 miles down the road we were in an accident with our kids in the car. Our car was stuck hanging over the side of the mountain. After climbing out of our truck and standing on the side of the road getting soaked by the snow, a state trooper was kind enough to take us back to the hotel. We went to the front desk explained the situation and asked if we could check back into our room and pay for an additional night. To our surprise, Tiffany said NO. We explained that the room didn't need to be cleaned or stocked up we just wanted to get our family situated after the terrifying situation (we had our 8 and 10 YO kids with us). She said it's the policy and no one could break the rules. She then had the nerve to rudely refer us to another hotel that had earlier check ins, and she even proceeded to provide names. We again reminded her our car is on the side of a mountain, were cold and just want a room for our kids. She said she understands but wasn't going to lose her job for breaking their policy (really lose your job). Heartless and rude is what that was. We were not asking for anything for free we just wanted to get our family in a dry warm room. We were soaked from standing by the side of the road waiting for help. This hotel apparently has no flexibility and couldn't care less for their guests. We will sit in the lobby for 3 hours soaked waiting for 3pm just so she could maintain her control and follow their policy. This place has terrible service by design if they can't have even an ounce of flexibility in an emergency.

Yelp
Save your money! This place sucks and so does the unqualified security staff. We rode in with 10 bikes and over 15 people for a nice ride. A couple of the girls had a beer before we went in. Nobody was rowdy or rude or drunk. It was early and we are veterans, health care workers and professionals and they called the cops on us as we lined up at the ATM and we're going to have breakfast and gamble and ride on. The security simply had to say welcome , you can't drink on property other than in the he bar. We had already come in and clearly it was a couple ladies and most of us were not drinking. Security could have said "can I be gentlemen with the small pocket knife put it on his bike.". Nope, cops called and the manager wouldn't even look at us and spoke to the cops and not to use. So professional. So we left with all our money and will never go back. Boring lame place with staff that has no people skills. If you want a lame casino with over priced food and drinks and rude staff with no people skills this is the place for you. Horrible.

Dawn M.

Yelp
The restaurant here is very good.! It's my second time here. Tonight I'm here for the prime rib special. Excellent cut of meat. The rice pilaf was super flavorful and the soup with salad bar didn't disappoint. If you're in the area and want an excellent prime rib special Thursday & Saturday is when it's offered.

Yelp
The best thing here is the food! I don't do well on the Casino floor....Not much else to say
google avatar

Jay M.

Yelp
The place stinks something fierce from all the cancer. If you enjoy smelling like an ashtray and love to throw up every 15 minutes you should definitely visit this disgusting place. Oh by the way they require masks yet they don't provide them. Too bad masks can't cover up the stench from this disgusting place. You can see the cigarette tar oozing off the AC vents
google avatar

Reanne G.

Yelp
I'm only reviewing the casino portion of Mazatzal and it was Meh. Only stumbled in because I was in town for a work and I guess there's not much to do out here. When you first walk in, it reeks of cigarette smoke. Like hits you in the face smell. On the outside, the building looks really big, nice and new-looking. There is plenty of parking, too. I guess that's accurate because the inside was dead, quiet and blah. The casino is teeny-tiny and has some outdated machines.

Yelp
The rooms are large and dated but worth the stay. Super clean, comfortable beds, plenty of room to stretch out and relax.

Stayed there this past weekend. I was skeptical at first .. not knowing what to expect in Payson. However I was pleasantly surprised by there food in the restaurant and the friendliest staff. Very affordable too!

Yelp
Came to see Neal McCoy, stood in line for 3 hours. Supposed to be general admission, first come first serve. They let so many people in before those of us who had stood in line. Need to assign seats! No info on if you're handicapped you didn't have to stand in line. Won't see another show here or refer friends.

Yelp
The entire place reeks of cigarettes. Tightest slots in the nation. Old outdated machines that DO NOT pay. EVER. Avoid at all costs. Your bank account will thank you!

Yelp
Stayed for two nights. Nice rooms with a separate "living room". Kids had a blast in the game room and pool. Wish the game room was open more often especially on a Saturday. It's kinda hit and miss. Every employee was very helpful. Plan on eating somewhere else unless you like high priced over rated food...only downside to this hotel/casino.

Yelp
The restaurants at the casino are very good. The food is consistent and delicious. I just want to comment on one item that they changed. They had a wonderful chocolate ganache cake that was to die for. The pieces were big and filled with two different types of ganache. I went to buy two pieces of cake for a friends birthday and not only had the price gone up but the cake they gave me was far inferior to the one that they had. It was half the size and more expensive. I strongly encourage them to bring back the cake they had before. Thank you!

Yelp
I had forgotten my sunglasses in the hotel and was panicked because they were not cheap. The hotel staff and security were kind and helpful. They were able to find them and mailed them to me with no hassle and within 2 days. I am very grateful staff at Mazatzal!

Yelp
We decided to take a day trip and this hotel was showcasing a craft fair in on of their conference rooms, so we decided to add this to our trip on our way out to Jerome. It was easy enough to find and is a part of the fun little town of Payson. The hotel itself has a decent amount of parking and the convention area was easy to navigate to with a couple of well placed signs. Once inside it is definitely the typical casino type hotel. The whole place had an overwhelming cigarette smell to it and it was pretty busy considering the size of the town it was built-in. They had a few restaurants and other offerings, but they didn't seem to be very crowded. We headed over to the craft fair, which had about 20-30 different vendors, but didn't offer too much variety in the types of offerings they had - several crochet and sewing tables, a few homemade jams/jellies/honey jar tables, and jewelry crafter tables. Walking through the whole affair took maybe 20 minutes. The unfortunate part about most of the tables was that they took cash only, which was partially our own fault for not thinking ahead about that part. I think we are too used to big city fairs where most tables use Square to be able to take cards. Overall: B- A pretty standard hotel with the typical hotel-casino vibe once inside. Wouldn't make a special trip just for the hotel, but the surrounding town is very cute and there are plenty of shops to spend time in!
