I Swam With Dolphins and Billions of Fish During One of the World's Most Astonishing Natural Migrations — Here's How You Can, Too

"My group spent four nights at Mbotyi River Lodge, which overlooks a sweep of golden sand on the Wild Coast. We’d rise at dawn, have a light breakfast, then wriggle into our wet suits and take to the boat." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Best family holiday we've had on the Wold Coast! Stayed for 7 nights and wish we could have stayed another 7! Brad, Alex and their team are warm, friendly and willing to bend over backwards for their guests. Accommodation is basic but clean and comfortable. Food is great and plentiful. Every day offered something new and we cannot wait to go back. If you love adventure and the outdoors don't miss it.

Such beautiful location with stunning scenery with so many waterfalls to see . Beaches were magnificent with good swimming and walking & really great hikes. Alex and his team went out of their way to make our stay really memorable. New years bash had plenty of fireworks to spice up the evening . We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and felt totally safe even on remote hikes. We would totally recommend this resourt .

Stayed here one night during a bustrip across South Africa. The place is a bit run down and old. Also very difficult to get to. About 1.5hrs on very bad road. Great view of the ocean though.

Absolutely terrible if not the worst experience I’ve ever had ,poor management ,the place is not well looked after , self catering chalet had a dead snake laying overlooking the balcony ,my children were traumatised from an iguana that kept entering the room through the thatch ,broken toilet, dirty shower, broken uncomfortable beds, management was rude and not understanding refused a refund so we literally had to suffer for two nights because we didn’t want to lose the amount we paid ,ended up squashing 6 people in one room because of the top thatch full of hornets nests and insects flying around, definitely not a place to visit if you are looking for a comfortable stay.

Never mind the bad gravel road to get you to this lodge. At the time I stayed on it, it was worth the trouble. From the warm reception by their staff, to clean and comfortable rooms. And nice fresh food. I will definitely come back again if things don't change for the worse. I stayed at this lodge from 26.04.2024 to 28.04.2024 as part of the Bhejane Pondoland Adventure group.

We recently visited the lodge as part of a group. Save for the beautiful beach and environment there is not much to say about the lodge. The food was by far the worst, overcooked meals I had in years. Rooms are old with sketchy furniture and our shower head was not working. Our neighbour used his aircon throughout the night making a terrible load noise and resulting in our entire room from roof to floor shuddering. We reported it to management who just laughed it off. This place will never see us again.

During our trip through South Africa back in April ‘23, we really enjoyed our stay. Don’t just follow Google Maps as it will avoid the road via the tea plantation. Although the road is quite bumpy it is all worth. Most amazing and unique location during our holiday. Beautiful located near to the ocean. The diner is delicious, breakfast fine, rooms a bit outdated, staff is very friendly.
