The SF Sandwich & Park Power Rankings - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"McBaker Market & Deli is another corner store that’s also a sandwich destination. And in this case, it’s The Panhandle’s soulmate. Most of the sandwiches are SF-themed, like the excellent 49er with chicken, bacon, and pepper jack. We also love the “Garden of Eatin,” a vegetarian option that makes most other meat-filled sandwiches in the city look skimpy. Wander the aisles filled with candy and jarred pasta sauces while you wait." - julia chen 1, lani conway, patrick wong

Google
I judge any sandwich joint by the way they deliver an Italian sub. This did not disappoint. It was chock full of cold cuts and the bread was fresh and chewy without being so hard that it exploded when you took a bite like so many do. We also got a chicken pesto and that was yummy too. The dutch crunch on that was one of the best I've ever had. I suggest ordering ahead as the line and waiting was about 30 minutes at lunch time. Bonus point for having tables to sit at on the sidewalk.

Picked up Hairlip Louie and his little Juicy Squeeze Ling Lee up on Baker street, and we're heading to Alamo Square for the Naked Lawn Darts Tournament preliminaries. First things first though...A quick stop at McBaker Market & Deli for one of their world famous Pastrami Sandwiches, and I'll be set for the day! The Lip chose his Lawn Dart partner well, it's not that Ling Lee is a good at throwing the darts, because she isn't, but she's such a huge distraction to the other contestants that they're now favored to win the tournament on April first. Man-O-Man that Pastrami Sandwich from McBaker Market & Deli was Bombtasticly Delicious! ☆☆☆☆☆

Google

Google
I was eager to try out this deli bc of all the amazing pictures and great reviews but it did not meet my expectations. I ordered the 49er, the sandwich was small and falling apart. i also had to wait about 20 min for my sandwich *on a sunday*. additionally, they were all out of pesto and the employees did not say much or acknowledge my presence before & after ordering. disappointed but I will be giving them another try in the future in hopes they were just having a bad day! the chicken in my sandwich was tasty though!

Google
Best deli in all of sf, hidden gem. Most popular are Giants, Stoner, Hella Gouda, Joe’s Special, 49er, and the Tanner. Breakfast burritos are amazing. Cannot say enough good things, highly recommend!

Google
Great sandwiches and cool staff. Seating is outside only and limited space. This place is quickly becoming a local legend, and for good reason. The sandwiches are dank. I’ll have to add some pics later as I always chow down before I remember to take pics of the food from this place.

Google
I live in NOPA and this is my go to for quick grocery runs when a trip to the supermarket is too daunting. They have a great selection of dry goods, refrigerated and frozen foods, produce, house made hummus, beer, wine, and the best part - a deli counter! The owners are very nice people and both have taken time to get to know me personally. They are very receptive to customer input so if you don’t find what you’re looking for, tell them and they will order it for future trips.

Google
Slinging quite a few sandwiches on Sunday at lunchtime, had to wait about 10 mins. They say the cold sandwiches are faster but I wasn't clear from glancing at the menu if certain ones were hot vs cold. Tried the stoner and it was piled high with meats.

Yelp
McBaker's unexpected tour de force is that they make the finest homemade hummus in SF. It's astonishingly creamy, and unlike those run-of-the-mill supermarket brands, it won't leave you with that strange citric aftertaste. They sell it by the container. Hell yes. I opted for a DIY veggie Dutch crunch sandwich, and it was not only substantial but also very fresh. You can tell they handle a lot of orders, ensuring that everything they serve is top-notch in terms of freshness. I really like what they're doing at Lucinda's but it's like $19 for a sandwich which is kinda ludicrous. McBaker win for value. The owner exudes a friendly demeanor, which adds to the overall welcoming atmosphere. McBaker is definitely a fail-safe choice for a quick and satisfying lunch.

Yelp
Unless you are a doordashing or picking up I don't recommend. I ordered a sandwhich here and the guy told me it would take 15-20 mins okay, no problem. I come to pick it up in 20 mins he says it's almost done. He kept handing delivery drivers orders. I wait another 10 mins and ask how much longer it's gonna take....he hadn't even started my order. 45 mins for a deli sandwich is ridiculous and not worth it in my opinion. Just go somewhere else..

Yelp
Good neighborhood deli making delicious sandwiches. It was my first time today and probably would come again if I'm in the area. (well I'm technically in the area already, I live in Hayes Valley). There is no room to wait inside, but there are few chairs and tables outside. When your sandwich is ready, one of the man will call you and let you know outside. I've had The Stoner on Dutch Crunch, It was delicious. Good bread.

Yelp
Solid sandwich spot in Nopa! Came here a few days ago to grab some sandwiches after a run. We must've come at a peak time since they were slammed with orders and our sandwiches took ~30 min. The ambiance is pretty nondescript and there isn't much seating (more of a grab and go). They got a wide selection to choose from so everyone is happy. My bread on my sandwich was a bit too toasted and had a bit too much mustard but my friends sandwich was done better. I'll likely be back if I'm on the area and recommend to anyone looking for a solid sandwich in Nopa!

Yelp
What a cute little deli with friendly service! The reviews rave about the breakfast burrito, which is pretty good for only $8! It comes with egg and cheese wrapped around a loose filling of potatoes, salsa, sour cream, and bacon (or sausage). I asked for super crispy bacon and it was quite floppy, but I actually prefer the sausage here. I like that the egg is fresh cracked with the white and yolk visible, instead of a uniform scrambled yellow. Sandwiches are fresh and delicious, but I prefer the larger amount of veggies when I ask for "everything" at Parkway, Lucinda's, and Falletti's.

Yelp
Excellent friendly service. Quality products. Delicious sandwiches. A premium neighborhood corner store serves your needs.

Yelp
Wowza! If there's a hospitality Olympics, Joey and Tito deserve the gold medal! They took our sandwich experience from burnt to brilliant, crafting a mouthwatering masterpiece and even tossed in chips and a soda for good measure. Their warmth, speed, and professionalism were like a symphony of satisfaction. Here's to these hospitality wizards earning a perfect 10-star rating on Yelp! Thank you, Joey and Tito, for turning our day around with your kindness and culinary magic!

Yelp
Absolutely love this spot. Anytime we are in the city we come by and get sandwiches. The sandwiches are delicious and the staff is so friendly. Highly recommend giving them a try.

Yelp
Tasty Treat at Mc Baker: Sink your teeth into the 49 rs Sandwich at Mc Baker--a delightful mix of fresh, crunchy veggies and perfectly seasoned meats nestled between freshly baked bread. It's quick, it's tasty, and it hits the spot every time! Whether you're on the go or just need a satisfying bite, this sandwich is a winner!

Roger L.

Yelp
This spot has some of the best sandwiches around. Been there a handful of times and have yet to be disappointed with the food. The staff making the sandwiches could use some personality adjustments though (cranky/short attitudes). Overall, a decent experience. The sandwiches make up for the other stuff in my opinion.

Yelp
This might make my top five sandwich spots! I got Mike's Memphis BBQ sandwich on Dutch Crunch, and it held its own next to other better known sandwich shops in the city. Generous amounts of roast beef, BBQ sauce, and toppings was enough to put me in a food coma in the best way possible. I called in my order ahead of time and they had it ready in 15 minutes. The workers here are friendly, and with affordable prices ($11.99 for a huge sandwich before a 10% discount via Yelp), it's hard not to love this place. The only possible thing I would say could be improved would be for the Dutch Crunch to have a little more crunch, but everything else was so good that I didn't care. I hear their hummus is supposed to be amazing - looking to try that on another trip. Skip overpriced sandwiches at more famous places and come here for a sandwich you won't regret!
google avatar

Yelp
Got their Yosemite Sub, for $11.99, it was loaded and delicious! I came here around 11am on a Sunday and the wait was 25-30min, so I recommend either ordering ahead or not come here when you're in a rush. Service was friendly, parking was easy, and I like that they have tables and chairs outside.
google avatar

Aditi M.

Yelp
Their Garden of Eatin Sub is amazing - the quantity is great and you can actually carry this sandwich on a hike as the veggies added to the sandwich are minimal so it won't get messy.

Yelp
I live down the street from McBaker and LOVE this little corner store. The owners are super friendly and they make THE BEST sandwiches. I probably order the Meltdown with everything on it once a week and it never disappoints. My housemates love the other sandwiches too. I'm vegetarian but hear that Joe's Special is great. We also go there to grab chips, flour, eggs, or other essentials if we run out and don't have the energy to go to a full grocery store. Thanks McBaker for always being there for us during the pandemic!
google avatar

Anna D.

Yelp
It was absolutely delicious :) I ordered a toasted roast beef sandwich with all the trimmings and a pastrami, turkey, and provolone sandwich, as well as the baba ganoush. Everything was scrumptious. I'll be coming back here again :)
google avatar

Yelp
It's what a corner market should be, how the food should taste and how we should treat each other. But def get a sandwich here
google avatar

Shelley P.

Yelp
Cute neighborhood deli! The friendly man working there suggested the Hella Gouda after I told him it was my first time and he was so right because I did not regret it at all - it was so packed with turkey/gouda of course/bacon/garlic and all the classic sandwich toppings - I should've stopped after finishing half but it was just so gouda (hehe) that I had to keep going. Would love to pick a sandwich up for a Golden Gate picnic one day when it's warmer!

Yelp
I've always had awesome things to say about thing this corner store! The folks are lovely. Their sandwiches amazing but today, today I tried their chicken shawarma wrap with fries. Holy cow! It was soooo gooood!!!! Very happy they deli guys talked me into adding the fries in the wrap. Try them the next time you want a tasty sandwich!!!

Nina M.

Yelp
Not only did they get my order entirely wrong, but I had to wait almost 45 minutes for a $15 sandwich. I get it, sometimes you get busy. But it's your job to communicate to customers the wait time is longer than usual, especially considering many of us have time commitments and can't spend so much time waiting for a less than mediocre sandwich.
google avatar

Sam L.

Yelp
This spot is a neighborhood gem. Sandwiches are GREAT - packed with filling, bread is quality, and many of the spreads they use on them (including the hummus and aioli) are made in-house and taste delicious. I recommend getting a tub of hummus to take home with your order. They are also huge; one half was enough to leave me full and provide leftovers for later. It's a pleasant walk if you live in the area; since it also functions as a market they have plenty of chips, sweets, and drinks you can grab with your sandwich. I want to try the breakfast burrito one of these days! "Customer service" sounds too formal for this spot - Joey is fantastic and super welcoming. They have a punch card reward program for every sandwich you buy as well.

Yelp
I definitely prefer this place over McDonald's, that's all I gotta say. Food = good service = great ambiance = lovely :)
google avatar

Sarah T.

Yelp
So good! I'll be back to try all the sandwiches! It's a deli, so there's no "ambiance" to speak of. The workers are friendly and make your sandwich quickly. The hot sandwiches take some time (10-15 mins), but it's worth it.
google avatar

Denise C.

Yelp
Fun sandwich and snack mini hut..also offers breakfast burrito and chicken tenders...I had the pulled pork and it was pretty tasty. The sandwich guy was sweet to me and talked about the warriors game.

Bryan R.

Yelp
Great sandwiches like always. Support local business! Workers are super friendly. Please be patient with the now 2 gentleman making the sandwiches! They do a great job but they are popular sandwiches
google avatar

IkJae C.

Yelp
This place does sandwiches and they do it right, the reviews are well deserved. I happened to park across the street from the deli as I waited for a friend and noticed a steady stream of locals walking in to pick up their phoned in orders. That was enough for me to get out of my car and try one out and I'm so glad I did. Did not expect this to become one of my favorite sandwich spots in the city but here we are. The menu, bread & cheese choices are all standard fare, and that's okay with me because they toast it perfectly and the ingredients were fresh. Right up there with Deli Board, Palm City Wines, Lucca's & Molinari which are all fantastic sandwiches.
google avatar

Kasra M.

Yelp
Sandwiches definitely have the look of a great one but mine at least didn't have the flavor. It was either lack of sauce or something missing in the combination that didn't knock it out of the park.

Alexis T.

Yelp
We decided to grab a quick bite at McBaker, hoping for a great sandwich. Unfortunately, that never happened because we never received our food. It seems there are logistical issues, as they prioritize phone and online orders over in-person ones. We placed our order and waited for over 30 minutes, only to find out they hadn't even started making it when we inquired. It was a complete waste of our time, and we didn't even get an apology. We won't be coming back.
google avatar

Kevin V.

Yelp
Good sandwich but skimpy on the meat I would pay more if they can be generous with the portion
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
The best!! Such a great addition to the McAllister + Baker corner! Wish they had been here all along!
google avatar

Dipesh G.

Yelp
- I was there only to get a sandwich from the Deli - Ordered the 49er on Sourdough - The sandwich was very tasty and a really good size, it lasted me two meals - Ability to pay wirelessly was nice - The market area is nicely organized
google avatar

Yelp
Solid market deli. The sandwiches are not bad at all. The bread is what stuck out for me. Dirt h crunch was chewy with a little crunchy on top. One of the better ones. Maybe I was buzzed. Got the giants and the hello Gouda. Decent selection of beers. Friendly workers. Would recommend if your in the area.

Myka L.

Yelp
Love this place! I've come multiple times and everytime the food has been amazing and all the workers are so welcoming! I love the recommendations they gave us!
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
One of the better sandwiches I had in the city. The store owner was super nice too! Also, it was pretty affordable for the city.
google avatar

Carlos H.

Yelp
Enjoyed a delicious salami sub here made with that good SF bread and plenty of packed in ingredients. I also enjoyed a side of fries and a Arizona Iced Tea. The fries were crispy and not too salty. Sandwich was huge, could probably order a smaller one next time but it was delicious! Maybe share with someone! Most of the customers seemed to be regulars and had placed their orders ahead of time, but the orders moved quickly anyway. The guy at the register was super friendly and even gave me a rewards card for a future visit. Appreciated the great customer service. Enjoy a bite outside and it was a beautiful California sunny day. Definitely recommend picking up a sandwich here if you are in the area.
google avatar

Sophie N.

Yelp
1. Chicken was tender 2. Did not skimp on the sauce 3. Dutch crunch on point $11 for a great time- would come here again
google avatar

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
The hella gouda sandwich is the stuff of dreams, the magical Dutch crunch concoction that got me to eat peperoncini. It's such a solid sandwich that I've returned to get multiple times. Customer service is reliably warm and friendly. Apparently, I need to try the hummus.
google avatar

Sophia G.

Yelp
Seriously the best sandwiches in the city, this place always hits! The portions are very generous and reasonably priced. I've never waited more than 10 minutes even when it's busy. There are a couple seats outside, but generally I get things to go. Also try the baba ganoush, so good.
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
A fun place to grab a sandwich and walk to Alamo square for lunch! I ordered the joe special which was filled with absolute deliciousness the bread was amazing (which is key to any good sandwich) and the jalapeños inside added the perfect amount of heat. We called ahead to place our order so that we wouldn't have to wait long. While you're there be sure to pick up something to drink for a perfect picnic in the park
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
Been going here for years. Highly recommended. The BBQ chicken sandwich is my favorite.

Mckenzie G.

Yelp
I have tried a LOT of highly ranked sandwiches in SF. Deli board, Lucinda's, Molinari, you name it. So when I saw there was a sandwich place with 5 stars near me... I was dubious but excited to try it and see how it compared. McBaker's deserves all 5 stars. I honestly rarely come on Yelp to review things unless I think it truly deserves it... this is one of those occasions. First of all, cute bodega that is well stocked and the people were so nice. I didn't know what to get and the gentleman at the counter helped me figure it out. I ended up getting the Hella Gouda which clocked in around $13 and was HEFTY and niiiice and warm. That price point for a sandwich of this size in SF... a rare find and one of the reasons this place deserves its 5 stars. The Hella Gouda was perfect. A perfect Turkey sandwich. I got it on Dutch crunch per the gentleman's recommendation. Nice and toasty, sauces were so good, and perfect ratio of Turkey and lettuce and everything. The bacon was also sooo nice and crispy-- I hate when bacon is flabby in a sandwich or makes it soggy. Despite the delicious sauces, this was not a soggy sandwich. Such good flavors!! It was scrumptious! One half more than filled me up for lunch (keep in mind I'm a relatively smallish woman so maybe that's why) and I warmed up the second half for dinner. 15 minutes at 350 in the oven... somehow it came out even BETTER. The cheese was melty, the bread was even crunchier without being too dry, and despite the sandwich sitting in my fridge for a few hours, it was not soggy at all. Just absolutely delicious. Lucinda's used to be my favorite sandwich in the area. A sandwich there is very tasty and can also serve 2 meals but very messy and easily clocks in around $20. Deli Board runs you past $22. Save your money, treat your taste buds-- go here instead. Dare I say... this might even be my new favorite sandwich shop in SF. Can't wait to go back and try more!!
google avatar

Katlyn B.

Yelp
Solid veggie sandwich and fair prices too!! Quick friendly staff :) really enjoyed the choices and family style business environment
google avatar

Nathan W.

Yelp
I came back to try the 49er and it did not disappoint either. The chicken was not dry at all and it went well with the ranch and avocados. I got all the toppings per usual and the sandwich was perfect. I might prefer the other 2 sandwiches I ordered in the past, but the 49er is a perfect chicken option.

Morgan G.

Yelp
Great neighborhood sandwich spot in Nopa. The employees are very friendly, food is delicious, and prices are reasonable. The portions are also quite generous!

Yelp
Friendly staff and great sandwiches. Everytime we go in here we are treated like old friends and it is truly an incredible place!
google avatar

Tori D.

Yelp
I'm not even halfway through my sandwich and I had to write a rave review for this place. Not only was the person working behind the counter super friendly but this is the best sandwich I've had in years and sandwiches are my favorite food (my wedding was catered with sandwiches). I got the Hella Gouda and I am effing IN LOVE.

Nancy P.

Yelp
Everything is delicious! Service is great, variety of sandwiches is amazing. I go there often.
google avatar

Yelp
The breakfast burritos here are unreal. They have an amazing selection of bottled drinks like lemonade, kombucha, and beer.

Yelp
Best sandwiches and the staff is great! I love the Joes Special with bacon. Their falafel wrap and hummus is good too! Great value!
