I first experienced Caramel Eyes at the Second Glass Wine Riot in October. Amidst a sea of wine vendors peddling their wares, the Albert Winestein table stood out because it had two things the others did not: Stilton cheese (to go with some kind of red wine) and caramels (to go with port).
Jason McCrea, the Chief Caramel Guy, was chopping up little pieces of those handmade, tasty caramels and handing them out alongside the Albert Winestein guy and his Stilton cheese. The caramels conjured up memories of drugstore penny candy, but with soft texture, intense flavor, and the optimal amount of sweetness. I also dig the name; it reminds me of my past aspirations to own a makeup company with mascaras named Mesmereyes, Visualeyes, and Fantaseyes.
Right now, they have vanilla, black lava sea salt, cognac, and fresh ginger. Friends and family, be forewarned: you may or may not be getting Caramel Eyes for Christmakwanzaakah this year (the "may not" happening if the urge to chomp all the caramels happens before I wrap them).
