Chicago Fast-Food Workers Say Companies Aren’t Protecting Them From COVID-19 - Eater Chicago

"They then drove to a McDonald’s location in the Loop where protesters say workers have also tested positive for coronavirus. In mid-May, five area McDonald’s workers filed a class action lawsuit in Cook County alleging that the company also failed to inform workers about colleagues that tested positive for COVID-19 and didn’t provide enough personal protective equipment (PPE). Just around the same time, the company released a 59-page guide to franchise owners instructing them how to minimize virus risk in their dining rooms." - Naomi Waxman

I had breakfast here this morning and they got my order correct and it taste great. I came back for lunch and they got my order wrong but they were quick to fix it. It’s a little dirty, but I think that’s probably because it is such a busy McDonald’s.

Google
The gentleman on the front counter was positive, wished me a happy Mother’s Day, and when my husband almost dropped a bag, he said Good catch! I had a special order due to allergies and they made it wrong BUT caught it before it went in the bag. The store was clean and it was easy to order. —If there were a lot of people, they would have a hard time ordering, but since we were the first in line when we were there it was quick and easy. 10:15 am Sunday

We stopped here for breakfast before leaving town. The location was very near our hotel and that is why we picked this location. We used the self ordering kiosk. The food did take what seemed a long time but they were busy. Otherwise it was standard McDonald's fair so not much to report on with that. Not the locations fault but we did get hit up by some homeless folks both coming in and out of the location. We didn't have cash on us and one of them got aggressive and starting swearing at us. I am sure the stress this created for us is nothing like the stress they are feeling with their situation.

Store was clean and food came out quickly and was fresh. I got a big Mac meal with a frappe. The burger wasn't sloppily made or cold at all fries were fresh as well. The cashier was nice and took my order with no problems. And food came out in a timely manner with no issues.

Google
Didn't give me my full order. i had placed an order and was heading to the train station, but when I arrived at the McDonald's along the way, the app wouldn't give me my order number, saying to go to a "spot" that didn't exist. I deduced an order that had been called out many minutes prior was mine once I read it and saw my items on it (yes, it really was my order). Wonderful! But because the app wasn't loading and was glitching, I didn't figure that out until a couple minutes before I had to leave, and from manually reading the items. I finally got my order, and the man there mentioned I was supposed to get a coke zero but despite this I was left with nothing. I waited and waited, time was running out. I asked an employee if I could please have my drink, and she went to go get it, but a couple more mins passed and I simply couldn't wait any longer and I had to rush to the train. Come on!! The majority of the order had been ready for like, 8 minutes, but in that time frame they couldn't scramble together a small coke? I just wanted a nice cold drink after a long day. It's not travesty to humanity or anything, but I didn't get what I paid for and had my time wasted, and had a really stressful experience.

I wanted to use a bogo coupon deal that I got for a receipt from this location. I have used it many times before at this exact location. It was the code portion of the receipt only though because that's all that fits in my wallet. The main cashier was very friendly and I really appreciated him for being nice and helping me. But the two managers were being rude and told me I couldn't use the receipt if it wasn't the full receipt. I have used it partial like that many times before. I told the manager this, and she yelled at me and she said they're under new management. The last time I did this was less than a month ago, which is why I had the receipt. I did not appreciate being yelled at, and I would prefer to give my service to the McDonald's on Jackson WAY more then this horrible location because they're way friendlier. IThe only reason I come here is because it's open longer. The store is dirty, the employees are rude, and the food is mid at best. Thank you to the cashier who helped me out. I wish I got his name because he was a really nice guy. He gave me a receipt to fill out to write this exact same review for the McDvoice which I promptly filled out and then I walked over to the Location on Jackson to give them my service because they're a million times nicer. I will not be giving Adams McDonald's my service any longer. I'd rather not eat because Jackson closes early then have to subject myself to that experience ever again.

Google
Food is as you expect from McDonald’s. The service leaves a lot to be desired. It took over 30 minutes for an order-ahead lemonade and they gave it to the wrong person. Employees are unapproachable and food sits behind the counter. The manager is friendly and willing to address concerns. It’s a difficult establishment to simply run in and grab your food at—you will always need to wait 10+ minutes. Unfortunately this is the closest McDonalds to Union Station since the closure. It would be a great place if the employees were more attentive.

Yelp
Recently came here on a lunch break. Easily right by the CTA station. Looks great on the outside but different story on the inside. Most of the kiosks are broken, the fixed seats are broken and not screwed in either. Food specials are respected at least where I can still get a mcchicken with fry special for $3.50 at least. Plenty of sketchy characters inside too. Decent food, not the best place to check out but it'll do
google avatar

Yelp
I tried the chicken Big Mac, and it was an absolute delight! It surpassed the original Big Mac in every way.

Yelp
Used self serve to order food. The food came quick and it was hot when we got it. Everything was made good and as mentioned with modifications in order.

Yelp
Convenient McDonald's location in the central loop. I order it everyday on my App while walking there, then pick them up with no issue whatsoever. The customer service is very decent and nothing to complain about. Overall, it is a good convenient business in the area with great breakfast and dinner while walking to and from work alike.

Jose H.

Yelp
Very disappointed with this McDonalds. It never fails they mess my order up every time. I have ordered from here 3 times this month. They either forget my fries. I order a soluble quarter pounder and I get a regular quarter pounder. I order chicken nuggets and they forget the sauce in sure they change me for it. I don't know what kind of people are working there but they sure don't pay attention to any kind of detail. Is funny they don't forget to change you for the food or forget to stick the receipt on the bag but they sure do forget the food you ordered. I will never order from this place again at 180 w. Adam's. They're a bunch of incompetent workers. Not happy at all. !!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
We (5 guys) rolled up to the window at 2:30AM and ordered 10 cheeseburgers, 2 large orders of fries, and 60 chicken nuggets. We were served quickly and we conquered. We then walked over to the lobby of the JW Marriott and devoured all the food. I highly recommend trying this strategy.

Cole R.

Yelp
I've told multiple people this....this is the best McDonalds I have ever been to in my life. I have ordered here dozens of times and not a single time has my order been wrong. It's such quick and nice service. All the ladies working are so polite. I just did a breakfast mobile order and unfortunately it was either taken by someone else or lost in the system. The worker was so polite in fixing the problem, and it was resolved in less than a minute.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
It's a McDonald's so you know what you're getting into. That being said, I only had take-out and everything was just fine. The food was made quickly and tasted hot and fresh - what more would you want? I'll always return to a McDonald's.

Sydney S.

Yelp
Best mcdonald's i've ever been to as someone not from chicago. very fast and always get order right (unlike most mcdonald's)

Yelp
Had a breakfast delivery from this McDonalds and everything arrived fast and hot! Our delivery was super simple - a sausage egg biscuit with hash browns & a pancake breakfast with sausage, hash browns, scrambled eggs. It was enough food for 2 adults & a child - very filling. They also packed A LOT of condiments for us, so that was Extra Nice.

Yelp
This McDonald's is a 24-hour location next to the W Hotel - City Center and across the street from the JP Marriott. Definitely convenient if you need a quick fix at an odd hour due to an event or travel. The inside was clean and you have the option of ordering off two self-serve kiosks or from the register. My boyfriend and I opted for the kiosks and moved to the side to collect our orders from the pickup counter. My boyfriend got his meal within a couple of minutes; mine took closer to ten. There was a wait on hash browns - he must have gotten the literal last one since we both had them in our order. I ordered a sausage biscuit with cheese, a hash brown, and a yogurt parfait. + Sausage biscuit: I haven't had this since I was in elementary school, and it was surprisingly not bad. The patty had no weird bits, the biscuit was soft, and the added cheese was completely melted. + Hash brown: straight out of the fryer and blazing hot/predictably delicious. + Yogurt: this is the first time I've ever gotten one where the fruit isn't completely frozen. The juices make the yogurt appear a little curdled, but it was a small tradeoff to not have to crunch on frozen fruit. The only note was that the super hot hash brown was placed in the bag with the yogurt - we were just walking next door so it didn't affect anything, but it would have made more sense in the hot bag with my sandwich. Obviously McDonald's isn't anything to go out of the way for, but it was a quick and easy breakfast for $5 before heading out of town.

Yelp
This is by far the best McDonald's I have ever been to. The quarter pounders are always extremely juicy and delicious. I usually order Doordash but I have picked up a few orders after getting off the brown line on my way home from work and the service has always been stellar and efficient. The only problem I have is that it is so good so fast and so easy that I am eating at McDonald's twice a week now which can't be good for me. Great job to this McDonalds team. Keep it up.

Yelp
Horrible experience Horrible Personal Very Unfortunate that this is really a McDonald's with no customer service

Yelp
Pretty hard to review and critique a McDonald's...especially to differentiate among them. But I'll say this one was very well run. For a lot of inner city McDonald's...and this one is in downtown Chicago...it takes a bit of effort to keep people moving, and to insure the seating doesn't end up with street peeps lounging around and driving the customers away. This store was well run and spotless inside. Good management and employee selection here. They had staff working the tables all the time to remove any refuse, and to clean up and prepare the tables for the next group. They managed this very well. The store is right on a corner, so they have perfect location. The food was the usual...good and hot...nothing laying around getting cold. Place your order...move over...pick it up...and head out or have a seat. Nice and simple. McDonald's and this location have this down pat. Try it.

Yelp
This McDonald's is right next door to The W Hotel - City Center. Good place for breakfast. Ordered the Sausage, egg, and cheese McGriddle value meal - with a small coffee. They added the cream to the coffee for me - I added the sweetener. McGriddle value meal was very tasty - however, the coffee was kind of weak. I ended up pitching the coffee. If the coffee had been better - I would have upped the rating to four stars.

Yelp
Very close to the JW Marriott and open pretty much always. You can order electronically or at the counter. Decent service and what I bought was a hot fudge sundae.
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
There is a cappy Latina cashier that is quite pushy and seems to barely speak English. She even got my order wrong. It was a major bummer.
google avatar

Stephen M.

Yelp
I will never go here again since you cannot go inside anymore. It's so inconvenient. I like ordering inside since you can see menu. Now you cannot go inside. And you have to wait out for the order to be complete. Don't feel safe waiting outside nope. Never again.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is trash! 4 am trying to get some breakfast this McDonalds is on the corner of wells and Adams they have no drive thru why would they have a walk thru I'm just trying to sit down and enjoy a meal
google avatar

Marika C.

Yelp
This is probably the nicest McDonald's I've ever been to. It's really clean inside and the music that's playing is strangely soothing, haha. It was the first time I saw a self-order machine at a McDonald's.
google avatar

Jordán C.

Yelp
Walked into an empty restaurant and approached the counter try try and order a soft serve and two cookies. I stood at the counter for a while before anyone greeted me. The service then turned around and they were very polite, and got me my order quickly. It just was obvious there was no manager on shift because the structure was disorganized and no sense of urgency for the consumer.
google avatar

Sara P.

Yelp
As far as McDonald's goes, this is the nicest one in the area. It is quite clean, especially in the morning. The ordering system by being able to go to a cashier or a kiosk is nice. It's also nice to have different sections for ordering and picking up food. The food always comes out fast too. The employees are also very nice.
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
This is by far the best city McDonald's that I have ever been to. I ordered 2 Medium Fries for $2 and they were perfectly cooked. Warm, crisp, golden, and just great. Some locations pull out their fries from the fryer too early which leaves them soggy and not golden. This is of course to get the line moving. I also ordered a McChicken with Big Mac sauce which was also excellent. I was curious about how a chicken Big King would taste at Burger King, but I don't like the Burger King downtown. Lastly, I ordered a caramel sundae and an ice cream cone. Both of these items were also excellent.
google avatar

Yelp
This was next door to the hotel and became our go to for late night while we were there. They seemed to be short staffed and it took a long time to get your order. Lots of seats available ad free wifi w
google avatar

Yelp
The service here is TERRIBLE!! They take FOREVER to just get our drinks. It's ridiculous!!! We waited over 30 minutes for a few drinks! It's like they're running around with their heads cut off. Not cool.
google avatar

Neno N.

Yelp
Terrible service, came here today for breakfast waited in the line fir 5 min, short hair dark skin lady in blue shirt at register didn't acknowledge me even I was in the line first so she just skipped me and serve someone else. I said to her that I was first in the line and she was mute,I will never come back

Yelp
I love McDonald's. Of course I was the victim of busy parents and busy schedules with lower-middle-class incomes leading to drive-through McDonald's goodness several times a week growing up. I refuse to think I'm hooked, because I can quit any time. And I will go for weeks without a visit nowadays, even months. And frankly ever since that Supersize Me movie came out and McDonald's starting attempting to "clean up" its act, I visited even less frequently because I don't like what's become of it. They took away my right to Supersize and tried to bait-and-switch me by saying I had the right to get a salad or fruit slices instead. They even had a quickly-failed promotion about giving away Fitness DVDs with the purchase of Extra-Value Meals. McDonald's trying to pretend it's healthy is what is driving away the die-hard fans like me. The reason why this one in particular gets only two stars is because it's just a bad place. The register area is a joke. Why would you have eight registers all across in a big line if you have a physical building that can't handle eight separate lines? There's a pillar in the way on the left causing a line rift separating the two leftmost registers, and a building niche blocking more than two people at a time waiting on the far right registers. What you're left with is a giant mass of people in the middle feeling like they're getting screwed by those sneaking to the left or right to flank them in getting to registers. Add to this the fact that the typical format of register-working involves taking two orders, then disappearing for 3 minutes to fill those two orders, then reappearing to take two more orders and repeating the process. This causes slow-moving lines and grumpy patrons. Add to this the fact that even when only taking two orders at a time before filling them - they still screw up. I ordered two Egg McMuffins and the Sausage Biscuit & Hash Brown deal - FOUR TIMES - and three of those times my order was wrong. The only reason why this place doesn't get only one star is Gabriel. I don't know how to explain the phenomenon of "the lone male worker outshines almost all the female workers" that I've noticed at SEVERAL fast-food locations, but it definitely rings true here. That one time my order was right out of four - Gabriel took my order. Since then, I try to work my way into his line instead of those featuring women cashiers - not out of misogyny, but out of desperation to correctly get what I ordered. If you're at this location in the morning on a weekday, aim for Gabriel, and give him a big thank you when he gets your order right - which he almost certainly will.

Yelp
Homeless folks and the tourists they hit up for value meals. You've already found yourself at McDonald's, about to eat your feelings for lunch. Don't make things any worse by actually eating here. If you do, you will be approached and asked for change, or if you're dealing with a more enterprising type, an entire meal. The "clientele" isn't the only pain in the ass here. Take ordering. There are lots of registers, but there's no clear directive on where to go after you've placed your order. You kind of stand off to the side, trying to stay out of everyone's way, continuing your little dance until you're handed someone else's order. This isn't difficult to correct. Clear some counter space at the end, have people hold onto their (numbered) receipts, which are then exchanged for the food they bought. This isn't even a problem at other McDonald's locations, so I'm not sure how they managed it. I don't really mind that the food was made in China three weeks ago, but fewer bums and a little more organization would go a long way here.
google avatar

Matthew L.

Yelp
This McDonalds is horrible. Slow, lazy, and they don't enforce their own waiting lines. I know this means nothing cause I'm yelping a McDonalds, but I need to focus my pre-coffee outrage at someone.
google avatar

Harold B.

Yelp
The worst customer service I have ever received. Manager was incredibly rude and unhelpful. Please avoid this place.
google avatar

Krystal J.

Yelp
I haven't eaten McDonalds in a really long time. This one was really good. I always order my fries with no salt and wait with bated breath for someone to walk over, not read the note, and dump a pile of salt on. That didn't happen. They got it right! I was then annoyed that my McGriddle was taking a while, but considering it was 6 in the evening, there's probably no cakes just out and waiting. My complaints diminished when I got the freshest McGriddle I've ever had. Plus, there's fancy music which is random and cool at the same time.
google avatar

Christopher B.

Yelp
I come here every morning for coffee, and occasionally for lunch. They seem to have a pretty consistent core staff there that knows what they are doing. It gets busy around peak times since it's in the middle of the loop, but they usually get the food out pretty quick and keep the line moving. It's McDonald's... so by now you should know what to expect with the food. It's tasty and consistent, but definitely not healthy or gourmet. When a coffee is $5 at the stand in my office building, it's nice to still be able to go next door and grab a $1.50 McDouble. They are open 24 hours too, so if you happen to find yourself in the middle of the loop at 2am (I have no idea why) this will likely be one of the few places open.
google avatar

Lu H.

Yelp
I feel shamed to say this, kinda. Every year I gotta have the McRib. This McDonald's was newly remodeled, it looks bright, clean, and during lunch hours it's actually fast. The only downside is that there aren't many seats--I always end up sitting at the big big table, sharing with other strangers.
google avatar

Janet E.

Yelp
This McDonalds looks like it was newly remodeled. I was really thirsting for a drink and decided to come here for an iced coffee. There was no line and service was super fast! Plus they made my drink just the way I like it. Great McDonalds!
google avatar

Angelique Q.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast since it was just around the corner from our hotel...very convenient. But this Mc Donald's had the worst staff especially the cashier that rang us up. So rude, no smile, didn't repeat my order, made us feel unwelcomed, talking to her Co worker next to her the whole time and in another language. Don't know if they were talking about us or what. Then we sat down to eat and one of the staff started mopping around us and near our feet. Good thing we didn't slip and fall or else I would've filed a complaint!!!
google avatar

Clifford D.

Yelp
This McDonalds is right next to the hotel we were staying at. I went there for breakfast, and they didn't have three of items I was trying to order (McSkillet Burrito, Powerade, and Lemonade). There was no line and it still took ten minutes to get my food. The McDonalds was dirty and wasn't well kept. The one thing you can expect from McDonalds is consistency with their food, but I was really disappointed with this location. To make matters worse, when I got to my hotel room, I realized they had forgotten one of the sandwiches I ordered. Fail.
google avatar

Dave S.

Yelp
It's fast food, right? Well... it's food, at least. There are three McDonald's within two blocks of my work (maybe more for all I know) and this one has THE WORST SERVICE of any of them. I understand the people working the counter are getting minimum wage or slightly higher and are not super excited about their jobs or innovating the industry. But seriously, will someone take my damn order already!?? I can't count the number of times I have been here where I stand in line at a register and when I finally get to the front the person is running around without any clear direction running food to other registers for the people who arrived after me but were lucky enough to win the register lottery. Multiple times I have had to get someone's attention and remind them that I am still waiting to place my order. It's not rocket science. Heck, it's not even science. It's service. Plain and simple. Divide and conquer: one group of people take orders and another group of people run the food while yet another makes it in the back. Sounds simple, right? Well it doesn't appear so simple when you walk into this McDonald's. I have worked in the food service industry as a waiter and I understand that people have different ideas on what is good service but one thing is always constant: greet your customer and communicate with them. Let them know if you'll be a minute; inform them if there's a wait. Whatever the issue just let them know; they'll appreciate you more for it and be more willing and patient to wait. Other than the service this is, well, McDonald's. Doesn't matter which one you go to you get pretty much the same thing. That's the hallmark of their business. The only difference is service. So, pay attention franchisees: McDonald's may continue to get my money but you independent franchise owners may soon lose valuable customers with poor service. Afterall, there's a McDonald's within a couple miles just about anywhere in developed countries.

Yelp
I can't believe I am reviewing a McDonalds. I am near depression just thinking about it. Since coming to the states in 1980, I (my mother) managed to destroy my wonderful athletic genes (six pack stomach, professional soccer player) that were being passed down on my fathers side, by introducing me to McDonalds and letting my have my way with it. As a 10 year old she use to buy me a Hot Fudge Sundae, Big Mac, large fries, large soda and a Apple Pie .. in one sitting! I really wish she would have just said NO. Single mother syndrome, I guess. Ok, now that you have a little be on insight into my McDonald's vs. my fat life - history, I can get on with this review. This McDonald's has to be the worst McDonalds I have EVER visited! I have been to McDonald's in 40 + states and numerous countries. Some notorious McDonald's located in NYC, Mexico City, Southside and so on. This one beats all of those hands down. No organization, lines are terrible, 20 people standing in line and 2 registers open w/ 10 plus workers, machines are always down, 40 year old workers with hickies on their neck WTF!. They are chatting all the time. I know because I am Latino and understand their conversation. One of the male workers there has the biggest attitude. I can keep going. I went one year without eating McDonald's and other fast food, in 2008. This place is making me want to do it all over again. Hmmm, maybe I should give it 5* for helping me out. Stay away!
google avatar

Amanda L.

Yelp
I have nothing bad to say about the actual food or service (although as other reviewers have noted, this location isn't exactly lighting fast). The reason I'm writing this review is to warn people that the "free wifi" we've come to expect from all McDonalds, and that is advertised at this McDonalds, is often not working at this location. I've gone there on three seperate occasions within the last three months and have not been able to access their wifi. So if you're stopping in mainly for the use of their internet, go to Starbucks accross the street.

Kurt C.

Yelp
This is one of the best McDonald's I've ever been to that it compelled me to write something - even for a McDonald's. It's close by to work so I come here pretty regularly and it's always good - service and the quality of the food. Really what stands this McDonald's out is the service and the friendliness of the employees. This one does table service for dine-in so you just order, take a number stand and they drop off your order to your seat when it's ready. They always ask if you need ketchup or anything else before they walk away. I've even had them offer to throw my tray away when I was done even though I'm more than willing to throw my own trash away. The food always comes out fresh, tasty and consistent. And they don't over salt the fries. So I like coming here because they are so friendly here, and when you're craving that McDonald's Quarter Pounder.
google avatar

Carolyn R.

Yelp
The new workflow is a horrible joke. They took the worst aspect of this location and made it worse-ER. Yeah I just made that word up. I really hate this location but it is so close to my office I'm sure I will still get sucked in.
google avatar

Toni H.

Yelp
The service is ok.They are busy .There is a male african american employee who is always cleaning.who has a very positive and friendly attitude. He is the best employee,I have seen at this location. The management is what surpruses me.they all are wearing large hoop earings, some employees have watches , rings and nails are painted. What happened to the food laws .We lead by example.I am food certified and I follow rules .obviously McDonald's makes there own.

Yelp
I walk past this McDonalds on my way to work in the morning and they are NEVER open at 5:00am like they say. Lucky to find the doors unlocked by 5:15am. Once, standing in the rain I stopped by this McDonalds because my co-worker and I take turns buying breakfast a couple times a week . I stood there at 5:10am (10 minutes after they open) and the doors were locked. I waited a couple of minutes, gently knocked and the woman FINALLY looked at me, put up her finger and wagged it at me like I was a naughty child. How rude! The people working behind the counter are unprofessional, chit-chat all the time, and move slowly on the orders. DO NOT go to this McDonalds! There are 2 others nearby!
google avatar

Christina B.

Yelp
Worse service I've ever had. Waited 20 minutes for 1 meal which they got wrong. Only go if it's your only option
google avatar

Liz M.

Yelp
Friendly service, food as expected. Great people-watching windows right underneath the L tracks.
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
Pathetic. What a complete waste of time. They are getting 2 stars only because I'm generous when I'm drunk.
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
Since my last review three years ago, this McDonald's location has figured out how to make things work with the change to the new system of order at the registers on the left side of the counter, and pick up under the tv on the right side that displays ready orders. Seating is good and contemporary, it's a little crowded in the area on front of the food delivery counter where you wait for your order, but overall an average McDonald's.

Yelp
Ok so I pay $2.50 for a Oreo McFlurry and they don't fill the cup up all the way. I'm talking about the cup and not the plastic cover which I understand. Really? I'm not going to pay for full price for something that is only half filled. I almost didn't say anything but I'm like no, F that. The lady was pretty nice and informed me that a they had this problem before with a customer and that this particular McDonald's was strict and wouldn't allow them to fill the cup up but she did. I'm eating the fries and they don't taste as good as they should. Taste like McDonald's fries in Iraq. Boooooo!!!!!!

Yelp
This is the lowest of the low when it comes to McDonalds. I have been to bad ones before, but this one takes the cake. The waiting lines are extremely confusing, the workers don't enforce them, it's just like a free for all. The service is horrible. Went once and the manager took my order for hot cakes, she gave me two butters and no syrup. This was the manager! It seems like every other McDonalds understands the concept of fast paces work environment, this one does not, they are as slow as it gets. Do yourself a favor and go to any other McDonalds in the downtown area (as there are like 40009098). It is a guarantee it will be better than this disaster of a food establishment.
