McDonald’s Is Attempting to Make Its Apple Pie Healthier | Eater

"The chain’s apple pie began in the late 1960s as a hand-pie turnover introduced by Knoxville franchisee Litton Cochran and was the company’s first dessert in 1968. Originally deep-fried and served hot in a folded cardboard sleeve, the crunchy, bubbled crust and hot sweet filling became iconic and even inspired an Apple Pie Tree character in the 1970s. In 1992 the pie was switched to a baked version to align with changing customer preferences; modern baked pies use six U.S.-grown apple varieties (Fuji, Golden Delicious, Jonagold, Rome, Gala and Ida Red). A 2016 reformulation moved from diced to sliced apples and added a lattice-top crust, and a 2018 update reduced sugar and ingredients while adding real butter and extra cinnamon. Over its history the pie has seen more than 40 variants and international flavors (for example taro in China, sweet corn in Thailand, and berries and currant in the U.K.), plus seasonal and signature varieties such as strawberry-and-crème, s’mores, cherries-and-crème, guava-and-crème, peaches-and-crème, blueberry-and-crème, pumpkin-and-crème and sweet potato-and-crème. I've been going to mcdonalds before work for years to get a large iced coffee with extra caramel and caramel drizzle, I just switched jobs so I switched the mcdonalds I stop at. This locations atmosphere is very dull, and they dont add the drizzle and rarely add extra caramel pump so i stopped paying for the options. Well today I was given a medium so I told the girl at drive-thru it was supposed to be a large and she proceeded to tell me it was a large when it clearly states on the cup that it's a medium for iced coffee. I don't have time to argue with someone first thing in the morning over a cheap coffee but this was probably the last time I go to this location. I should be able to get what I pay for and the employees should know how to pay attention and prepare an order correctly. EDIT* - I continued to use this location after I received a response from the owner and the issue seemed to have been corrected until today. They attempted to hand me a small so I told them it was a large, a minute later they came back and handed me a medium so i just drove off with it and went to work. It's clear to me training doesn't cover reading the cup because anyone can look at this cup and see it says what type of drink the size covers.

I went specifically for a sugar free vanilla latte. I ordered at the kiosk and my order was prepared quickly. The latte was great. 👍 I originally walked to the Starbucks down the street, only to find that the lobby was closed. This was a great option as a backup and was as tasty as Starbucks in my opinion.

If you are a dasher, or you order a door dash, beware, they let their food stack up on the delivery shelf and take forever to help any delivery drivers. Even though they could call them out just like they do other orders. There was seven bags on the shelf when I first got in here.

I went through the drive through for a coffee. I was told to go to a mobile pick up spot, it'll be done in 8 minutes. After I think 12 minutes I was wondering where it was so I went in. It was waiting on me inside in the pick up location. I wasn't told to go in. I didn't really want to go in that's why I did drive through. It's not a big deal, I got my coffee.

The woman with bright red hair only acknowledged one person ignoring everyone else and personally made her order. She was the last to arrive and the first to be served. Over an hour I have waited and still waiting.

It was a sweltering hot day. All I wanted was a Diet Coke. I got a Diet Coke. Then I couldn’t get a refill because they took the Diet Coke machine out of the wall. Then I stood at the counter like an idiot while nobody got me a Diet Coke. I ended up leaving and not getting a Diet Coke. This McDonald’s should put a soda machine and have workers who want to get me a Diet Coke.

I drover through the drive through in my Barbie themed Nissan and they called me gay several times after the 3-day wait, for my order to be taken they said to pull up to the 14th window (there's only 2 windows) so I said 12121 chop chop I have knee surgery tomorrow yesterday next year they said I'm " choped cheese???" So I gooned in their mouth.

Stopped by to get a sausage biscuit at McDonald's on Cumberland Avenue and they had already closed their breakfast menu. [For future reference to breakfast eaters, Cracker Barrel serves breakfast until closing and Waffle House serves breakfast 24 hours a day]. The staff at the drive-thru seemed rather indignant that I was asking why they took my order if the breakfast menu was already closed. Drive-thru, nope, Drove Off. every single time i order they leave something out or take 30 mins to get it if they even remember to make it. i also always grab food from the canes down the street and then walk to the mcdonalds to order a frappe and enjoy my food, and i always see the older woman who slurs her words being rude to a customer or crew member and today she tells me i'm not allowed to eat my outside food there and i was very polite and just said okay but she decided to continue dragging it getting louder and louder. not to mention i always clean my mess and the restaurant has never been full once.

Absolute nightmare trying to pick up food here as a doordasher. Waited in drive-thru line for twenty minutes to get someone's food and wasn't even ready when I got to the window. Waited an additional ten minutes at the window. Not much better when picking up inside. Place is always trashed.

Food is what'd you'd expect for McDonalds. The service is very slow for a "fast food" restaurant. Every time I've visited this McDonalds drive thru, I am asked to pull up to wait for my food. It usually takes at least 10-20 minutes for them (that is if they remember). Food always comes out fine but it always takes far longer than it should.

HORRIBLE PEOPLE!!! My daughter is in the HOSPITAL, been here for going on 14 days! She asked her daddy for a chocolate milk shake at 11, or 11:15... so he jumped up and walked down to get her one! Lobby was closed, he wasn't driving, so he was going to walk through to get his girl a shake! When he got to the window, the man slammed it in his face and told him he wasn't doing walk thru's! My Huband tried to explain and the rude man wouldn't listen! If people in this world would be nice, and have a smidgen of a heart, this world would be a better place!!! But who ever was working the drive thru Friday September 30th is a sorry excuse for a human being!!! You need a job that doesn't require speaking or communicating in any form, fashion, or way with any other human!!!

I went into this University of Tennessee restaurant to find it DISGUSTINGLY FILTHY! Trash and food on the floor behind the counter. Employees were just walking on a pile of uncooked french fries and a pile of paper trash all over the floor! The person taking orders just threw unwanted receipts on the floor along with dropped napkins, straws and bags. The perceived attitudes of the employees was, "It's not my job to pick it up." If there was a manager on site, they didn't care either of how their restaurant looked nor the uncaring attitudes of the workers. I am from another state. I ordered anyway because I had just got off of work and didn't feel like driving out of my way. But it will be the last time I go to this restaurant! I have pictures. Disgusting! Disappointed in this McDonalds!

Maybe the worst location I've ever been to. Teeming with homeless people, and the bathrooms are disgusting because it's clear they use it as their place to get cleaned up. Homeless woman was sleeping on a booth when I walked in and stinking up the place. Staff was slow and rude. Don't go here.

This review has nothing to do with the food. So based off that it gets the auto one star. Here is why. Sheer stupidity from the management there at McDs. So, Its around midnight and the line is going AROUND the building. Moving slow but hey its busy so I get it until I get to the speaker to order. They ask if I am door dash or uber eats. I say no. After hearing them pull off a three stooges conversation they ask again if I'm here to pick up food with either of those companies. I again say no. After a few more seconds of "who should tell him", I am finally told that the system is down, they are only serving door dash or uber eats pick up. These mofos have been letting people make a line AROUND the building and parking lot, beause it grew as i waited with everyone else. instead of coming out with a sign, a napkin, crayon, BBQ sauce, something to write and place on the speaker, what the situation is and to please move on you are not getting nuggets tonight. By the way, how in the Ol Smokie can you let the system go down AT A MAJOR UNIVERSITY CAMPUS LIKE UT? Perhaps because they believe these young men and women are fast asleep waiting for school to start tomorrow. Nah, they just stupid.

It took 20 minutes to get through 5 cars and we ordered a 6pc chicken nugget happy meal with double fries and we got home to realize they only gave us a single kids fry. How do you even mess up so badly? And I've tried calling about 5 times to see if They can fix it considering it is too late to turn around and there's no answer. I left a voicemail and I didn't get a receipt because the man didn't give us one and one guy wasn't even wearing a mask. The worst service I've ever experienced. WHO FORGETS THE ENTIRE happy meal? I have a wrapper that has my order number and time on it so hopefully I will receive some sort of compensation or else this McDonald's is a total loss.

To the general manager of the McDonald's on Cumberland avenue, I would be absolutely embarrassed with the reviews I am reading regarding your restaurant. I just sat in your drive thru for about 45 minutes to an hour, just to not have my order fully completed and this has not been this first incident. I were to estimate how much money I have lost because I didn't look in my bag before leaving your establishment's drive thru, I would say it's upwards of $100+. I understand I am one customer but there should be no excuse for this sloppy service. 0/5 stars

The service at this place was terrible. The staff was very rude, and the managers very clearly allow the attitude problem to continue. I hope that they evaluate how they treat their customers. On multiple occasions, I have been completely belittled by these employees. On another note, the food is terrible as well. I have given this location multiple opportunities to give me even the slighted bit of satisfaction as far as food quality goes. It is always something whether it is stale bread, cold meat, soggy fries, or any other potential issue that results time and time again. If I could rate this in the negatives, I would.

They never get the order right and especially what happen after tonight them giving customers attitudes. Just really clinched it for me now. Claims to be 24/7 but half of their food "is gone" or "ice cream machine doesn't work". it's the lazy workers not wanting to do the work/have to clean equipment at shift change. Normally I don't care, but I think management should read this and know what their workers are doing to lose business for the company.

Possibly the worst McDonald's for service on the planet. Definitely the worst in Knoxville and there are some pretty awful McDonald's scattered about town. This location THRIVES on the fact that they are in the middle of campus and have a bit of a captive audience. The workers can have crappy attitudes and still the customers will come. The drinks are consistently under-filled. Usually 3/4 full but on a good day a 1/2 full cup is standard. Beyond taking your order, the staff DOES NOT acknowledge their patrons. Robots would be nicer. The workers here don't say "hello," don't even say "your total is ..." they just stick their hand out expecting payment. If your total is $2.18 and you give them $10.18 you have to remind them to give you $8 in change. Their heads will explode if you give them $10.28. When you pick up your meal expect the silent treatment again. Don't you DARE ask for condiments. "Have a nice day" is entirely out of the question.

The male with black hair working the drive through was extremely rude, unprofessional, and not wearing a mask. Upon asking if they could do four separate orders he responded with a snarky "we only do one order per car after five, sweetie." Which was fine was fine. Then my roommate with a dairy allergy asked if the smoothies were dairy free. He responded extremely inappropriately with "This is isn't a SmoothieKing. It's literally just ice and flavoring." Completely uncalled for. I pulled around to pay and collect our order. There was a nice lady at the second window who handles the transaction. When we went to check the items in our order before pulling off, he pushed past her to through the window and began screaming "WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE." I said we were checking our order" and he screamed "I BAGGED IT MYSELF ITS ALL THERE, PULL OFF" keep in mind he pulled down his mask to scream at us and we hand only been checking a large order for maybe 30 seconds. *there was no Big Mac or double cheeseburger with bacon, we were missing a basket of fries* I told him and I quote "I did not appreciate your snotty ass attitude in the drive through" he told me "COOL OFF BITCH FUCK YOU" and naturally I responded "FUCK YOU MOTHERFUCKER" and just drove off. I didn't get my food and I tossed out my caramel frappe because there's no telling if he spit in it or anything. This is extremely unprofessional. I will be leaving more reviews on various platforms and so will my passengers in my truck. I will also be calling corporate in the morning. Absolutely fucking ridiculous and none of us will be back! Would leave zero stars if I could

I just got home from attempting to get a hot fudge sundae and a caramel frappe from a "24 hour" location that was closed. Does that make any sense? No note or anything on why you're closed and on every website and GPS they say "open now" worst experience at any location. Definitely will be taking my business to Cook Out down the road!

This place actually is horrible. Never had ice cream. Always having some issues. Cashier is always on their phone. Not to mention they gave me the wrong food and when I said it was not what I ordered, the cashier tried to convince me that what I ordered was generally the same amount as what I paid for so she wouldn't have to do the return. Manager in the background also wanted me to pay again IN ADDITION to the paying for the wrong order, paying for something additional that I ordered. The thing they wanted to charge me for was 10.38$ and mine with the additional thing they wanted to charge me for was 8.10$. An actual sham of an establishment. Don't even bother complaining to the Burger Family. They don't listen. DONT GO HERE.

Had a southwestern salad with crispy chicken and it was surprisingly delicious. I wish they would bring back the Asian salad but oh well. Always packed with UT kids it seems no matter what time you go. They appeared very busy but whoever the front end person was she communicated very well and made sure everyone got what they need. We need more people like this in fast food! I got out of there in a timely matter and the location is even close to a bus stop. The only thing that scares me every time I go is the evil drive-thru/parking lot. When you are walking through there at night, people have a habit of speeding into that parking lot or out of it.

I ordered a large fry and was served a medium in a paper bag for a "here" order. But when i took the medium fry back, they threw it away and told me they were waiting on fries. They argued amongst themselves about why no one had made fries, lots of excuses back and fourth. So when they were ready, they served them all and left me waiting for the next batch of fries that had to start cooking after they served the last fries and the workers promptly left the area because they knew what they had done. The decor of the restaurant is modern, but its a front for a bunch of rednecks who don't care or have their stuff together. This place has an X over it for restaurant options as far as I'm concerned. Extremely poor service that I paid for because my kid was hungry and asked to eat there.

By far the WORST mcdonald's i have ever been to. The night manager was so unbelievably rude. We ordered 2 10 piece chicken nugget meals , one with a sweet tea and one with a dr pepper. They proceed to give us 2 sweet teas, no sauces , which when we asked for them, she had an atrocious attitude about and only gave us 1. the fries were cold, stale, and had definitely been sitting out for a long period of time. There also wasn't the correct amount of nuggets. This place seriously needs some new management because the rudeness and unprofessionalism has been an ongoing issue. If you do not want to deal with customers, DO NOT WORK IN CUSTOMER SERVICE

By far the worst McDonald's I've ever been to and I've been to locations in vegas ( that says a lot) rude rude rude female employees. This is a 24 HOUR LOCATION. I'm 100% sure the owner/company would be pissed to find out the management and employees do not even keep the store let alone the drive thru open 24 hours. God forbid they actually get busy, all hell breaks out. I'm on hold for 12 mins now and as they picked up and said I'm just going to just leave that here. Called back, sitting in their drive thru and watching the same woman who so rudely greeted me tell 15 cars they are not serving anything they will reopen at a later time. The manager proceeds to tell me they are only doing cash and breakfast orders, but wait? I was never asked either. I'm certain the owner would not like loosing money on account of a slow employee who is just sitting in drive thru unprofessional and just playing on her phone. Good luck, this location needs it

I am a doordasher . And was called to this location where I do many dashes at day after day after day. I have never had a problem getting into the building to pick up my orders and on the app for people who are doing purchases as a lady showed me who was also locked out of the building it said that she would be able to access her order by just going to the store itself not through the drive-through but through the lobby. The manager that was there Tonight kept turning people away order after order but they allowed is it allowed their friends and other civilians to walk into the building To hang out in the lobby instead I'm a but turned away business that was already in progress from customers who have already paid and from drivers who rely on getting their food they're on time the 2 cooks in the bag who looks like twins begin to laugh as the drivers were being turned away there was a couple of people sitting in front of the door at the tables complaining and cursing saying that the lady and there was being ghetto toward them To know it was not racially provoked by them saying so because they're as there's also people of color as well as myself so that should say a lot about the character of these people that are representing this business I also took pictures of the people is full or at least one of the people that was mingling withat was mingling with the staff in the lobby, yet those that were their conducting business we're not allowed to pick up their merchandise merchandise and get them too Their customers?? I also have taken a A picture of the guy in the lobby. And also the time and date in which this occurrence had taken place. Following days before we have never had this problem getting in to our orders Until tonight.

literally the rudest people EVER. i was waiting in the drive through line and already had my window rolled down when i came up to the ordering speaker. after about 8 minutes, i wanted to make sure that i didn't need to pull up to order at the following window. there was a long line forming behind me, so i asked if i needed to pull up to the next window. the lady rudely told me that she "asked me to be patient" and that if i pull up she "would not take my order and i would lose my space in line." i genuinely thought that the speaker was broken or something? she also had not said a word to me when i pulled up. i apologized and just said i was confused because she hadn't said anything to me prior. a couple more minutes go by, and she finally starts to take my order. she then tells me that they only are accepting cash, 10 minutes after i had been waiting to order. i just left, as i didn't have any cash on me. i understand that this is just a mcdonald's, but basic human decency should be expected from any business.

A couple weeks ago when I was in the drive thru I ordered a vanilla latte and the person working said "we don't have those." Yes, I'm serious. You'll be waiting 30 mins for 2 cheeseburgers only to find the order to be incorrect or part of the order you never even get. Terrible
