Oakland McDonald’s Employee Attacked After Asking Customer to Mask Up | Eater SF

"I report that at the McDonald’s drive-through at 6623 San Pablo Avenue in Oakland, a 19-year-old worker, Maria Resendiz, was assaulted on June 27 around 3 p.m. after asking a customer to wear a face covering; despite signs in multiple spots in the drive-through requiring masks, the man said he wasn’t aware he needed one and responded, “I don’t need no Mexican bitch to tell me what to do,” which led Resendiz to throw a children’s size cup of water at his car. He then parked, returned to the window, allegedly banged on it, used racial slurs including the N-word, demanded her full name and the restaurant’s corporate number, and — when she retreated to call 911 and tried to close the window — hit her, slapped her, and grabbed her neck until his companion pulled him away. Resendiz says the manager attempted to hand the man a piece of paper with her full name and later refused to cooperate with police or provide the security video; she also says owner Michael Smith had told her earlier to “don’t serve them. That is all you can do.” Smith’s spokesperson says police have been welcomed into the restaurant to review footage and are investigating, and Oakland police confirm she was “assaulted and threatened” on June 27 and that no arrests have been made.
