Looking for a breakfast spot, my husband and I made our way to McKay Cottage on a Saturday morning. We were fortunate enough to time our arrival where we arrived before the bulk of the morning brunch rush.
By the time we left the restaurant, the entire parking lot was full, and there was at least a 45 minute wait. We were seated right away inside and placed our order for two cold brew coffees. The coffees came out right away and were absolutely delicious.
After we placed our order for breakfast, we got deep in conversation and planning out the rest of our day. After quite some time, I looked up and realized that not only did we not have our food, but most of the other tables around us who were seated after us were already eating or wrapping up their checks.
It had been 45 minutes since we had placed our food order and when I asked our waiter where our food might be, he said it was because I had ordered pancakes that it was taking so long. I glanced at the table next to ours where three individuals at that table were currently enjoying pancakes, so I'm not sure why he used that as his excuse.
The hiccup with our food order perhaps being misplaced aside, the food itself was delicious. I ordered the lemon ricotta pancakes with a side of chicken apple sausage. My husband ordered a chorizo hash special.
He was slightly disappointed in the chorizo as it was not truly an authentic chorizo-style sausage, but more of an Italian-style sausage. The lemon ricotta pancakes were fluffy and filling. I did think it was a little bit of highway robbery to charge five dollars for a single, small chicken apple sausage that they cut in half.
All in all, I think McKay Cottage could be a real five star experience if there hadn't been so many bumps along the way. If I ever find myself back in Bend, I would definitely give this place another shot.
