Bay Area Coffee Pioneer Michael McLaughlin, Stalwart of Dark Roasts, Dies at 84 | Eater SF

"Founded in 1983 and based in Emeryville, this family-run roastery grew from what Mike intended as a one-year experiment into a slow-growth, quality-first business that celebrated its 40th anniversary on July 1, 2023. Mike and his wife Barbara built loyal, long-term accounts—selling to many customers for 30 to 40 years—while their son Shaun now co-owns the company and Barbara still works there three days a week. Mike served as the public face of the company to restaurants and shops, known for his warmth and salesmanship and for championing dark roasts; he also tinkered with roast levels and temperatures to find the right profiles for beans such as Chiapas and Javanese." - Paolo Bicchieri

Bought 2 bags for my father in-law’s 82nd birthday. He loved it - “Boy! Was that Costa Rican coffee strong! Fit for a drunk to wake him up.“ Thank you McLaughlin coffee for keeping my in-law relations in harmony! ❤️

My wife and I own Bravos Break coffee shop and we use McLaughlin’s Espresso Maximo and Abbie’s Blend beans. They were, by far, the best quality beans in the area. Not only is their quality excellent, they are also great people with awesome customer service. They go above and beyond for their customers. 10/10 recommend!

Google
Hello. I’ve tried McLaughlin Coffee for the first time today at one of my employer’s accounts. I’m the beverage tech and coffee specialist and have been in the coffee industry for 20 years. I looked up McLaughlin Coffee and see many great reviews as far as customer service, friendly atmosphere, customer’s favorite blends, many love the Sumatra blend. Here they have the Max’s Blend and the Espresso. I have to give my expert opinion. Max’s Blend is over roasted, way too dark. The beans are glossy from the oils coming out from over roasting. May I suggest cutting back on the roasting time just a little? The oils should stay contained within the bean so that they’re released during the brewing process giving the profile an even better flavorful rich balance of woodsy, Smokey finish without tasting like charbucks. Oops Your espresso blend is nice and well balanced. I didn’t have to do too much calibration on the grinder or the brewer to compensate for the over roasting of the Max Blend. I’m curious to try the Sumatra that most of the customers posted reviews about.

Google
McLaughlin has been my go-to place for home brewed coffee for the past couple years. Their beans are freshly roasted with amazing aromas and taste consistently. I have tried many varieties of beans from them and have been quite satisfied so far. I always walked up to pick up from the Emeryville location. Will continue to buy their beans for sure!

Google
I have been drinking McLaughlin coffee for more than 10 years, and is the gift my friends love to get. I got to meet the owners and some of the people that work there when I was working in a coffee shop, they are really incredible people. If you have a question about the coffee and are trying something new or wondering how to properly brew a cup, don’t be afraid to ask them. Is a local roaster in Emeryville CA, if you live close enough, just pick it up and you get a chance to smell the fresh roasted coffee.

Google
We have been enjoying McLaughlin Coffee for the past 6-7 years and after having owned a coffee roasting company about 10 years ago I can say, they are AWESOME!! Coffee is outstanding and their service is first rate!!!! Thanks guys!!! Just got new batch of dark roast coffee!!! Remember that song ' I'm in heaven" well after having sample a few of the new coffees, I really am in "Heaven" haaaa!!! Outstanding!! Quick service was also much appreciated!!! Thanks Team McLaughlin!!!!

Google
An awesome place to get fresh roasted beans! Great customer service as well - the other day I ordered ground beans and the grind size wasn't quite right (it was too coarse). I asked for help and Mark who works here figured out what went wrong. Apparently the grinder was recently replaced and not settled in yet. He was also nice enough to replace the beans on the spot. Great local business!

Google
Not many know the shadow roaster behind Cole Coffee. This family McLaughlin co'started Royal Coffee Specialty Grade Coffee importing, co'started the SCAA, pour over at their original cafe Royal, & consistently rate as favorite coffee overall with ppl's all over this world we call the Bay Area!

Yelp
I tried several varieties of their darker roast beans and all were excellent. The Mexico Organic Fair Trade is the best coffee I have ever found, and is my daily pleasure. Even better that it is from a local company!

Yelp
Huge fan of this place. Their beans are the super fresh! I order pickup and it's generally ready in one business day or less. Their French roast and Fast Freddie's Turbo Blend are smooth and delicious. When I'm trying to modulate my caffeine levels, their Half-Caf and Decaf French are also solid choices.

Yelp
Love this coffee company! McLaughlin's quality, roasts and flavor options surpasses Peet's and other local and shipped coffee companies I have tried. Their website's interface is intuitive, user friendly, easy to navigate and limit to favorite roasts or browse all available. I signed up for the newsletter and each month I receive a discount code towards a coffee purchase along with additional promotions and discounts - so worth the extra email and there is no limit to purchase. Pickup for your item(s) purchased is super easy and can be made same day if placed early enough (time is on website), next business day for pickup up or shipped. Their location is in Emeryville and super easy to access off the freeway or from Ashby street area. It's near the Chevron over the bridge leaving from Emeryville Bay or Marketplace. Parking can be a bit but easy to manage. The pickup window can be easily missed, so look for the sign that reads PICKUP. The company is on the corner of 64th and Hollis. There is no in store shopping as it is only a pickup location and orders have to be placed in advance. Worth the drive and time. Be mindful of the daily lunch scheduled closure other than that ...Enjoy! I always do!

Yelp
They have the best coffee I've ever tasted. I ordered the Columbian. It doesn't have any after bite. It's really smooth and delicious.

Yelp
Classic East Bay roaster that has stood the test of time. Great coffee, fast shipping, and easy pick up, if you like getting your coffee handed to you by a human. Highly recommended!

Yelp
I've never actually been to the coffee shop in Emeryville, but I first heard about McLaughlin coffee company through an acquaintance who self-described himself as a "coffee snob". He described the coffee he tried at this coffee shop as "some of the best coffee he's ever had", so of course I was intrigued. Since I don't live anywhere near Emeryville, I hopped on their website and ordered some online. I ended up choosing BRAZIL BENEFICIO PEDRA BRANCA which is a medium/dark roast. And let me tell you, it's FANTASTIC! Very smooth and rich. I can't wait to try all the other flavors/blends. Word has it that even their decaf offerings are amazing as well. I ordered some to have around for guests who can't tolerate caffeine. Can't wait to try that as well.

Yelp
Although I have been dimly aware of McLaughlin Coffee for some time, it didn't occur to me until recently that they might be roasting coffee at the level of Bay Area roasters like Ritual or Four Barrel. The turning point for me was the observation that Nabolom Bakery has been selling McLaughlin coffee during the pandemic. I purchased a pack of Mexico organic at the Monterey Market last week. The coffee was freshly roasted when I bought it, and it was noticeably cheaper than the coffee that I had been buying. When it came time for the taste test, McLaughlin passed--with flying colors. I like the coffee a lot and plan to try other flavors (roasts) when I see them for sale.

Yelp
About eight months ago started looking into smaller roasteries and found McLaughlin. They sell wholesale and retail. Lucky me! They have a large selection of organic whole beans and lots of options - blends, single origin, fair trade beans. Their online ordering system is easy and my order is usually ready within a couple of days. It's a quick drive, easy street parking and I pick up from their window at the side of the building. I am looking forward to drinking my way through their offerings. Some of the bean sources might change up so when I receive an email, I'll check to see if there is something special to try. Fair prices, excellent customer service, friendly people here. Being able to brew up an espresso or a great cup of coffee certainly starts off the day on a good foot.

Maani H.

Yelp
Best coffee ever. Best service ever. Easy to order your coffee and pick up the next day. I love this company and their coffee. Thank you.

Yelp
Update to review....I still love McLaughlin and each time i pour a cup I need to tell (only my foodie friends) about this place. I love that they roast their beans then sell them daily. Although I'm a small customer they really make the effort to extend great service. A few Chef friends of mine sat down to taste various suppliers and everyone, on a blind test, selected McLaughlin as the favorite. I've set them now as our house coffee.

Yelp
McLaughlin Coffee was a long time favorite before Blue Bottle, Bicycle, Philz, et al. existed. haven't seen them literally in decade(s). tasted them first in San Jose, they have been in Emeryville for years. if ever i brew my own coffee. McLaughlin will be my lst choice. fyi. just a roastery here, no coffee shop.

Yelp
I have been enamored of their Guatemalan roasted beans since I was a teenager drinking the coffee at Royal Grounds on college aka Cole Coffee! Now since that was a long time ago, and lots of other coffee has come on to the scene. I would like to say the Guatemalans robust flavor has never been supplanted by another bean. A lifelong aficionado of the particular dark earthy chocolate notes followed by just the right amount of piquant coffee berry flavor- perfection!

marilyn a.

Yelp
Love this coffee company. They ship me 2 lbs at a time-I've tried other brands lately and I honestly think this it the best-I get Max's Blend. Its dark, rich and makes me happy!

Lila N.

Yelp
Loved this coffee big time. It is so fresh an Organic and so good. Definitely will come back to pick up for next time.

Yelp
Their coffee is fire!! I cannot start a morning without a fresh cup of coffee. Truth be told, I have been starting my mornings on the wrong foot for as long as I remember...meaning I haven't been drinking McLaughlin's Recently, bought some McLaughlin beans and don't think I can ever go back to drink any other brand of coffee. I love the fact that they are a local family owned company and I KNOW that all their coffee is extremely fresh. Thanks for doing what you guys do and keep up the great work of keeping all us caffeine addicts satisfied!

Yelp
I have been a very long term fan and even try to go to breakfast places that serve McLaughlin because it's so far superior and improves my entire meal. Nice people and fair prices too I recommend fair trade organic for its values and Sumatra is highly flavorful. Everyone I serve it to loves it
google avatar

Yelp
Chased this amazing coffee down from having it at the Wild Goat Bistro in Petaluma where they couldn't keep the pot filled! I'm not someone who NEEDS coffee, so when I tasted this one, I knew it was worth tracking down. This is a business address, so I'll order in advance for pick up next time, but the McLaughlins were kind enough to pack a couple of pounds for me to hand carry back to LA!

Larry C.

Yelp
Greatest coffee at good prices. Fresh. Socially conscious nice people. I drink it every morning usually fair Trade Sumatra organic

Yelp
I cannot say enough good things about McLaughlin Coffee. I am so glad I learned about this local Coffee Roaster. We've tried all kinds of their coffee such as Guatemala Organic, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Sumatra Organic to name a few. They are all wonderful and roasted to perfection! It has also been such a pleasure getting to know the entire Family at McLaughlin. They are just the most thoughtful, genuine, supportive, hardworking people I have met. Almost too good to be true to still have such a great company with great values and great product around! Looking forward to doing business with them for many many years to come!

daniel l.

Yelp
Awesome beans and coffee. Been drinking for years as Cole Coffee in Oakland and Coffee Conscience in Berk both serve and sell McLaughlin beans.. Def some of the best dark roasts and it's always best to shop locally and support our hometown roasters. If you'd ever had an espresso drink made by Damien at Coffee Con using McLaughlin beans you'd agree... Best drink ever!

Michael A.

Yelp
If this is the producer of Ellis St. Hawaiian Blend whole roasted beans, I give them two thumbs up. This stuff is the best Hawaiian-Blend whole roasted beans I have had in ages!!!
google avatar

Jill L.

Yelp
Wish I discovered this place much earlier. :( I ordered the coffee in the morning and was able to pick them up in the afternoon. Freshly roasted! And reasonably priced. I fully enjoyed the Viennese roast.
google avatar

Aditya M.

Yelp
I can't believe this place has not been given enough coverage on yelp! Their beans are used by the Who's Who of Berkeley's cafes (Cole Coffee, Tribu Cafe, Nobolom etc). Try their Max blend.

Jason L.

Yelp
This is based on the Max blend. If you're gonna shelter in place might as well do it right. Last month I tried a 12 ounce bag and now I am purchasing 2 pound bags. This coffee is hella good and I use a basic Mr Coffee machine. I normally drink coffee with creamer but when I run out I can drink this coffee black. Customer service is top notch. I messed up with my last order and Joanna took care of my error. Easy to pick up during Covid.
google avatar

Mitch G.

Yelp
Spectacular coffee! Had never been committed to any one brand before but now have orders delivered fresh monthly to my home. Great website that allows you to set up exactly what you want and when. I'm a customer for life!
google avatar

Erin S.

Yelp
Amazing coffee! I just ordered the Mexican Organic blend and it is delicious. Smooth & sweet. I ordered 2 and now wish I got more. I see us going through this fast because I can't resist a great cuppa coffee. Doing it right McLaughlin coffee!!

Yelp
One of the best kept secrets in the Bay Area. They provide pickup and delivery coffee to a number of restaurants around the area, as well as providing fresh roasted coffee to the local consumer (like me). Considering what they offer, their prices are very reasonable. Mark and his staff are extremely helpful and knowledgeable about their product and willing to talk to you about your needs. It is refreshing to be able to talk to the owner of an establishment in such a casual fashion. At home we drink both espresso and drip coffee and are enjoying trying the various beans and roasts to find the perfect cup. Their coffee tends towards the darker side, at least the ones I've tried. Since I enjoy the dark roast for my brews this is no issue, but those who like the lighter roasts should talk to the staff about their preferences. All and all a highly recommended experience.
google avatar

Linda H.

Yelp
We've tried all kinds of coffee all over the entire Bay Area and this is the best; fresh and roasted to perfection. Wish there were 6 stars. Now we're experimenting with cold brew, but regular prepared French press and drop are also the best. If you're making coffee at home you can't do better.

Anna G.

Yelp
I have been ordering their coffee to send to friends outside the Bay Area during the shutdown, and I just want to give them a shoutout--everyone I've sent the coffee to is enjoying it, and it's helping us all get through this stressful time. Thanks!

Yelp
had some excellent coffee from aunt mary's restaurant. so good, in fact, that i asked where it was from. and the server pointed to the sign saying "mclaughlin coffee." very nice packaging and great flavor in the mexico roast. went on yelp--saw great reviews. tried to order on the phone, but they said to go on the website first and order in advance. so i emailed to get some info on the many many varietals they have. no one responded for about 2 weeks--so we called to follow up and get info on ordering, pick up, etc. i have to say, the lady who answers the phone seems like she was too busy to help a new, small customer. understandably, most of their sales probably go to big restaurants, so i didn't take it personally that she kept trying to get off the phone and shove me back to the website, even though i was telling her i was on the website at the moment and couldn't find the info i was looking for. it could have been a chance for me to continue to get excited to try more mclaughlin, but ah well, everybody has their bad days. ultimately, i try to stay focused on finding good beans rather than focusing on tepid interactions. later that day, we got an apologetic email came from the fellow who was unable to reply right away two weeks ago. he was quite nice and gave us more information on ordering. basically, don't drop by on a whim. everything has to be ordered in advance and then we can pick up. after our first order, we got a follow up come back coupon in our email to encourage more purchasing, which seemed like a great way to encourage more business. in the end, we tried three varietals--and it was all right. a bit too dark roasted for my particular taste. we did try the mexico roast again and still enjoyed it. but for us, we still prefer the medium to light roasts at highwire, weaver, and blue bottle. but admittedly the prices at mclaughlin were very favorable and if you like dark roasts and have the patience to go through their large catalog of beans, this could work for you.

Cindy H.

Yelp
Now that we are of the age where Decaf is our friend, we love McLaughlin's Narsai's Decaf Blend. It reminds us of his amazing restaurant that used to be on Colusa. The dark roast is nice 'n' bracing in the morning!
google avatar

Howard R.

Yelp
A grossly under-recognized East Bay treasure. While the McLaughlin team quietly distributes most of its product through cafes and restaurants, they graciously accommodate individual customers who order for mail delivery or, much better, who make pilgrimage to 64th & Hollis, where the magic happens. You can't get coffee any fresher without importing and cooking your own, probably not even then. No hype, no pretense, no outrageous pricing, no mega-corp evil. Just the best beans around, period. And the guys are a pleasure to deal with.
google avatar

Tim T.

Yelp
I've been hooked on their Italian roast espresso for a decade now, and everything else pales by coparison. Now that I live in Oakland, I can order from their web site and pick up a couple of pounds the next day at their roasting facility in Oakland. I was happy to find out that they're a family operation and incredibly nice people. If you like the coffee from Muddy's, these are the folks who supply them.
google avatar

Suzy S.

Yelp
Best kept secret in the Bay Area. Fantastic coffee and friendly customer service that can't be beat.
google avatar

Shannan H.

Yelp
Best Coffee I've ever had! I use their mail service to have it delivered directly to my door step; wouldn't wake up any other way

Stephen W.

Yelp
Simply amazing to find a company creating a product so clearly better in a competitive market like coffee; people who really know their coffee will really appreciate it; like the difference between milk chocolate and dark chocolate; everyone should try it; the best product of its kind in the market; clearly tastes better than any other coffee, bar none; if you haven't tasted it, you simply haven't had the best coffee you can have. Great people too! But then again, they would be!

Stephanie O.

Yelp
excellent and consistent roasters of great coffee Organic Peru: yum

Joon L.

Yelp
Do some marketing, damn it!!! I've lived in Emeryville but never heard about this place. It's only when I tasted Max's blend at Cole Coffee that I finally looked them up. Now, Max's blend is my favorite for pour over. Previously, it was mocha java from peet's. Peet's charges 17/lb while max's is 10/lb.

Terese D.

Yelp
This is my tongue talking -- literally! I found your coffee at Aroma Cafe in San Rafael and couldn't believe the smooth yet rich taste, and asked them if I you sell to individuals, and you do!!! Will be ordering soon!
google avatar

Matthew B.

Yelp
Sometimes, impressions about coffee can be heavily influenced by what you've heard about it. So, it's notable that I tried McLaughlin's Organic Peruvian without knowing anything about it. Someone in my family bought it because it was on sale at Berkeley Bowl. I tried it - and wow - really fantastic. Better than many other high-end beans I've tried. I used it to make espresso - and it was especially good. Although I have no doubt it would be good as regular coffee too. I have really enjoyed Cole Coffee for years, and I had no idea that McLaughlin roasts the beans for Cole. Don't be deterred by the fact that the place looks like it does exclusively wholesale work. They will take your order and have your beans ready the next morning. Prices are very reasonable - on the low end for gourmet coffee. And though I'd be willing to deal with surly folks to get great coffee - that was not the case at McLaughlin - everyone there was totally lovely. This will be my only source of coffee from here on.

Paul B.

Yelp
These guys source the best beans around and roast em right. Plus they're super friendly. Can't recommend highly enough.

Megan M.

Yelp
This place has the best coffee!!!! This family owned business is great!! The owners are the most friendliest people I have ever met.

Greg H.

Yelp
I don't think a lot of people know they can just go in and buy beans the very day they are roasted, if they just email them the day before. Check out their website. They will ship direct, but the great advantage of being local is the super freshness. I've found no better beans (Expresso Maximo my favorite) and they are priced below the other high quality outlets (Peets etc.).
