Historic former poor farm with brewery, winery, spa, cinema

"For those wanting an historic feel, McMenamins Edgefield has a bit of everything. Edgefield is home to nine indoor and outdoor spaces of various sizes on the property to get hitched, from groups of 12 to 225-person weddings. Guests can enjoy exploring the grounds on the wedding day, or even staying in one of the onsite hotel rooms, golfing, and getting spa treatments. Food-and-beverage minimums include service staff, and the hotel doesn’t charge a room rental fee once the food-and-beverage minimum is reached. Learn more here." - Jenni Moore

"Employees who worked at the Edgefield McMenamins location between May 16, 2019, and “at least” October 26, 2022, may have lost a significant portion of their tips after the U.S. Department of Labor found the location’s tip pool included assistant managers and “assistant assistant managers,” which the DOL says denied lower-level staff tips that should have been theirs. The agency says McMenamins tipped out about $800,000 to those roles and requested reimbursement, but the company refused and the DOL decided the matter was not suitable for litigation, so employees may need to pursue civil action to recover owed tips. McMenamins responded that it was “baffled” by the probe but maintains those assistant roles are hourly, front-of-house positions legally entitled to a share of the tip pool under Oregon law; experts caution, however, that federal and state rules focus on whether the workers’ primary duties are managerial and warn managers and supervisors generally should be excluded from tip pools." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

"I note that the hotel and resort McMenamins Edgefield, built from housing historically used as a “poor farm” in the early 20th century, houses 11 restaurants, bars, and cafes — including a winery tasting room, distillery bar, and pool hall — and this weekend hosted its annual brewfest, which had been rescheduled after last month’s heat wave. On Saturday night, July 10, I report a brawl erupted in the parking lot involving approximately four men and three women described as “extremely intoxicated” who refused to leave and allegedly threatened staff; when a Multnomah County deputy intervened he was struck in the face several times, rendered unconscious, hospitalized with head injuries and has since been released and is recovering at home, while another deputy suffered arm and leg injuries that were treated on scene. Three people were detained: Alverta Rosales and Jose Dolores Martinez Calixto were booked for assaulting a public safety officer and resisting arrest, and Mitchell Calixto was issued a criminal citation for the same charges, was transported to the hospital for injuries and has since been released. The investigation is ongoing and it is unclear whether the patrons involved were leaving the brewfest." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

"Portlanders have confronted Wheeler multiple times at Portland restaurants this year: Outside a McMenamins, Wheeler pepper-sprayed a member of the public who said he was violating social distancing rules." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

"McMenamins will begin reopening pubs for takeout Friday. The company’s popular tots, family meals, and beer and wine will be on the menu, appearing on delivery apps, as well." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden
