"Housed in a converted elementary school dating back to 1915, this sprawling hotel complex has long drawn out-of-towners and local Portlanders alike with its bars, restaurants, miniature movie theater, and even a heated soaking pool that’s open to the public for a small fee. While these amenities—along with the hotel’s sprawling school grounds and proximity to the popularAlbertaArts District—are enough to make it one of the most attractive spots to stay in town, its real cred shines through in the 57 guest rooms, many of which are actually converted classrooms (and still have some of the original scholastic features, such as chalkboards, integrated into the room design). Don't leave without sampling some of the McMenamins signature brews in the Boiler Room Bar, housed in what was once the school’s boiler room."

"It might seem counterintuitive to spend your vacation holed up in, well, a school, but this historic treasure is no ordinary institution of learning; rather, it’s an abandoned WWI-era elementary school saved from certain death by the McMenamin brothers, the region’s quirkiest development duo. The classrooms have comfy queen beds and private bathrooms as well as full-sized chalkboards; the auditorium is lined with sofas and overstuffed chairs (perfect for curling up in and watching family-friendly flicks with popcorn, pizza, and pints); the teachers' lounge is now a saltwater soaking pool; and the detention room is strictly for socializing and sipping hooch. In other words: the school of our dreams." - Jen Stevenson

McMenamins Kennedy School

"What's the story here?It might seem counterintuitive to spend your vacation holed up in, well, a school, but this historic treasure is no ordinary institution of learning; rather, it’s an abandoned WWI-era elementary school saved from certain death by the McMenamin brothers, the region’s quirkiest development duo. The classrooms have comfy queen beds and private bathrooms as well as full-sized chalkboards, the auditorium is lined with sofas and overstuffed chairs (perfect for curling up in and watching family-friendly flicks with popcorn, pizza, and pints), the teachers' lounge is now a saltwater soaking pool, and the detention room is strictly for socializing and sipping hooch. In other words: the school of our dreams. What’s the crowd like?Families, relaxed older couples, Cosmic Tripsters (AKA McMenamins Passport holders) And how are the rooms?Remember your first-grade classroom, with its big vintage windows, dusty chalkboards, and coat closet? That’s what you’re sleeping in when you book the School Wing, but instead of too-small chairs, there are comfortable beds, zany wall murals, and private bathrooms. The hotel quiets down once the local restaurant-goers clear out in the evening, leaving the halls largely deserted except for the occasional robe-clad guest returning from the soaking pool. For the quietest stay—sans the historic charms and chalkboards—request one of the 22 rooms in the newer English Wing. What about the in-room amenities?Amenities are basic; there’s no television or minibar, but Wi-Fi is free and reasonably fast. What's the food and drink scene like? The hotel serves three meals a day and has a half-dozen bars (at some point, drink a Botanical Mule in the Boiler Room), so if all you’re in the market for is simple, unfussy pub grub and decent booze in an entertaining environment, you needn’t leave campus. For pickier palates, the surrounding streets are rife with top restaurants; for casual, family-friendly eats, head down artsy-cool Alberta Street to Pine State Biscuits for gravy-drenched biscuit sandwiches the size of a softball, Bollywood Theater for Indian street-food favorites, or Proud Mary, a hip Australian import with a true connoisseur-grade coffee selection and Instagram-breaking ricotta hotcake. Anything stand out about other services and features?Especially tempting for guests in staycation mode, the heated year-round saltwater soaking pool in the hotel’s private outdoor garden courtyard (formerly the teachers' lounge) is open all day; although the public is invited until 8pm, later in the evening it might just be all yours. Over in the auditorium-turned–second-run movie theater, cozy old sofas and armchairs are lined up in place of squeaky stadium seats; after you order at the bar, your burger and beer will be delivered right to your seat. Best of all? Admission Is free for guests (but even if it wasn’t, flicks cost only $4 for the public, and half that for kids). What's the bottom line? With a soaking pool, movie theater, and onsite brewery, this converted elementary school is the educational experience of our dreams." - Jen Stevenson

We loved it! Stayed 2 nights so we could spend one whole day hanging out watching a movie and shuffling around in the halls, outside fire pits and onsite pubs. The soaking pool was wonderful, but it might help to post public hours so you know, as a guest, to avoid it then. I do wish they had more hooks in the bedrooms and a place to hang wet swimsuits. We had a great time. Highly recommend if you stay here, you just hang out and enjoy it. The pizza was delicious.

I recently visited McMenamins Kennedy School, and it’s easily one of the most unique places I’ve ever dined. Housed in a converted elementary school, the vibe is quirky, nostalgic, and full of character from old chalkboards on the walls to vintage photos lining the hallways. It’s like stepping back in time, but with craft beer and a soaking pool. I had dinner at their main restaurant and ordered the grilled chicken with mushroom cream sauce comforting, flavorful, and well-portioned. The mashed potatoes were rustic and satisfying, and the snap peas added a nice fresh crunch. It's not fine dining, but it was hearty and well-executed. Service was friendly, though it got a bit slow once the place filled up. The courtyard is perfect for outdoor dining on a sunny day, and the variety of bars inside each with a different theme is worth exploring. After dinner, we grabbed drinks in the Detention Bar, which was cozy and fun. If you’re looking for something that blends Portland’s eccentric charm with solid pub-style food and local beer, Kennedy School hits the mark. Great for a casual night out or a relaxed date. Just don’t expect five-star service come for the experience.

Google
We have stayed here twice, once in a school room and once in the English wing. I would choose the school room if you have the option. We enjoyed playing cards over drinks by the wood stove in the Detention bar. We had the fall salad and fall pizza special at the restaurant which were a nice combination. The soaking pool was really nice. The customer service from everyone we ineracted was superb. Don't stay here if you're looking for a giant modern room with a fridge and TV. Stay here if you want a quirky vibe, convenient food/drink/soaking pool and like-minded company.

Google
ABSOLUTELY LOVED STAYING HERE!!!! Our room was wonderful and we loved soaking in the pool, drinking in the courtyard, getting breakfast on-site and exploring the quaint hotel. The vibe perfectly encapsulated that of Portland. Staff was incredibly friendly and we can’t wait to come back. Highly recommend.

Google
Stayed here recently for 2 days. The quirkiness wore off after about 4 hours. The restaurants and bar staff are great. The rest of the hotel not so much. Our room was small and musty. The AC vent was caked in dirt and dust which most likely didn't help. Bed and pillows were ok. Not terrible, not great. The building has a soaking pool that is constantly filled and the entrance to the pool has lockers that you need to pay for to rent even if you're staying as a guest. The bed is old as are the pillows. Towels in our room smelled bad and were stained and dirty when we arrived. The shower head in our bathroom was gross. There is morning coffee in the wings but it was empty both times I tried using it. Had to walk to the front desk every day to get some and when we let them know it was out, they seemingly did nothing. Our room was not touched for 2 days by housekeeping and we didn't have a DND hook on. It's a fun place to walk around, the concept is cool. The grounds themselves are nice. The public WIFI is almost unusable. If you go into the boiler room you won't be able to connect with anyone at the hotel. It's essentially a black hole. We were here for a wedding that was at another spot and there was a welcome party in the gym the night before. The bartenders at the party were slow, rude and horribly inefficient. Two people attending the welcome party had stomach issues from the food that night. If you're thinking of holding an event there, look elsewhere.

My partner and I stayed here the night before an early morning flight out of PDX airport. We loved it. The room is pretty basic. We stayed in one of the classrooms. The bed was comfortable and everything was extremely clean. Despite the heat wave, we were cool in the room with the help of the ceiling fan. ||While I had a lovely time, I'm not sure I would stay there again unless I got a big discount on the room. The cost comes from the charm of the hotel, not the charm of the room, as the rooms are designed not to have TVs, mini fridges, coffee or tea. I knew to expect this so it was not a problem at all. The restaurants and bars were lovely and we enjoyed happy hour at the restaurant. Next time, I'll opt to go there for food and drinks and then use the money saved to stay in a more luxurious room someplace else. I'm very glad we stayed there. The experience was one-of-a-kind.

This place rules. So unique and guest experience design at the heart. Staff are lovely. Shout out to front of house Eric who noticed my suitcase wheel was squeaky and took it upon himself to go and find some lubricant for the wheel. So kind. Would def stay again.

Love watching movies at this historical place. The atmosphere is surreal as pictures and artwork from many years ago line the walls in many parts of this building. They seem to take you back in time to where things were a lot different. Aside from that, the movie experience is just so surreal and a very comfortable experience as movie seating consists of couches, loveseats, recliners, and chairs which are bordered by miscellaneous tables of different sizes. Feels like your watching a movie in a big living room with many friends. The food is above average with a variable menu and decent prices. Overall, this setting of watching movies is great for all ages, kids and adults. My favorite place to watch cinema.

Yelp
I have been here a handful of times for some epic events. I went to the Kennedy School prom twice, seen the Portland Cello Project perform as well here, been to the harvest celebration, dined out at the restaurants and done my time at the "School". Most recently a few weeks ago, - one of my friends had her 50th birthday party celebration at the Kennedy School. Wow, it was impressive. Fancy and way cooler than some weddings. They had live music, a cocktail drink bar, and a Mardi Gras themed buffet. The food was amazing. Some of my friends at the party thought it tasted way better than the food they had in New Orleans. It was so fun. One of the best parties I ever went to. The Jambalaya, beinets, and croquettes were so good. Just an impressive event with amazing planning by everyone. I will always remember it. The food was magnificent. The drinks were spectacular. I thought everything was amazing. Would definitely recommend them for a place to host an event. Always park in the parking lot. Years ago I made the bad decision to park in front and a drunk driver hit the back side of my car and kicked my wheels out of alignment. Be careful.

Yelp
Overall, it's a very cool place. It literally used to be a school, and they've converted the whole building into multiple restaurants, bars and places to eat. I went there with a friend who lives in portland at the recommendation of the same friends. We went to the basement boiler room, which was a good time. The bartender was very accommodating and made a manhattan. The way that I like it with a twist and not a cherry. He did a great job. The food was a B-. The Hummus plate was pretty good and it had fun things like cheese and grilled pita. The hummus, i'm a little bit of a snob, and I make my own. Definitely worth a trip.

Yelp
Even though I travel the world touring with "my" artists, this was my first time in Portland, Oregon. Our friends booked us a personal guide (Adam Thorn Smith, highly recommended! ) who showed us around and made Yelp even sent us a message on the day like "wow - you know how to explore all hot spots on one day". This was my first time at a McMenamins place. What a fun place! Loved the ambiance, their food (their Cajun Tater Tots are a must-try), and the service. This will be the #1 spot to visit whenever we return to the area and try out all the little gems inside this gem that were closed during our afternoon visit. Would I do a 30+ min detour to go here (mandatory in my rating scheme to achieve 5 stars)? Oh yes! Next step: get the McMenamins Passport!

Yelp
Interesting experience at a super unique spot! And friend and I visited for the soaking pool, and we enjoyed the tranquil nature of the space. The pool check-in was simple, and the front desk even offered us free towels since we were visiting town and not prepared with our own. We visited the courtyard bar to grab drinks, and it could've been a one-off experience but the bar tender was dry and acting like she didn't really want to be there. And when I asked for 2 drinks (because I wanted them for my 1-hour pool visit), she dryly relayed that patrons can order only 1 drink at a time. She doesn't make the rules but, whomp. I appreciated the changing area for the pool, but it smelled pretty gross (like urine)..it needed to be thoroughly cleaned. The pool area was lush and calming, and the pool temperature was perfect! One hour was definitely enough to soak in the full effect of the warm water, and while at one point I'd say the pool was at its capacity, it never felt over-crowded. It was overall a cool and nice experience!

Yelp
We wanted to show the kid this cool school that is also a restaurant, hotel, and bar. Well, we did not want to show her the bar, but the hotel and restaurant were cool. The kid said she could feel ghosts and some of the paintings in the hallway of the school are in fact creepy, So that added to the fun. We had breakfast here. The kid had pancakes and said they did not taste good. The wife tried them and agreed. I had the schoolhouse breakfast--two eggs, toast, meat, and potatoes. The eggs were cooked as I requested. Tasted fresh and had good flavor. The toast with fresh blackberry jam was outstanding. The potatoes looked burnt but were not and had good flavor. I asked for ketchup and got "Portland ketchup" which is a delicious organic product that I liked so much that I bought a bottle in the gift shop. The meat order was incorrect but was quickly corrected. The wife loved her biscuits and gravy and I tried a bite; it was delicious. Our server was friendly and efficient. The ambiance is outstanding. It's just a fun place to eat. Not only in the restaurant a throwback to previous history, you can walk the halls of the school afterward. The bathrooms are original from the school (founded in 1915) and still have showers. Plus, if that is not ambiance for you, while we were there the music was Grateful Dead circa 1971. I mean, how much more Portland can you ask for?

Yelp
Loved our stay. Alot of the restaurant were closed and we were able to attend drag bingo, but the overall experience was pleasant

Yelp
Had a great visit to McMenamins Kennedy School. We dined a one of the restaurants and took advantage of their brunch menu. I had the Communication Breakdown burger with fries and also a side of cheese and jalepeño grits. The food was good, but the burger was not very flavorful. I think it needed some salt. The fries were good and the grits were delicious!! The restaurant was clean and I loved the decor. The service was great. We were seated immediately and the server was attentive and helpful.

Yelp
Went to see "Elio" at the theater. It was a complimentary invitation event for McMenamins email recipients, with a creator Q & A after. There's a theater bar with a good array of food options like popcorn, sandwiches & pizza. Went for popcorn (super salty!) and a cider. The room is full of mismatched couches and cozy chairs. Found a loveseat toward the front with a table. Settled in for what turned out to be a very entertaining not-just-for-kids flick. The talk after was an enlightening session on how graphics and AI are used. Almost forgot my theater bar stamp but went back, finished up that page and collected a really cute Coffee Roastery Cat mug as a prize.

Yelp
One of the most unique spots we visited during our trip to Portland Oregon in June was Kennedy School. The historical elementary school circa 1951 has been renovated by McMenamins into a hotel, restaurant/bar, brewery and so much more. It was great walking around the hallways, looking at original artwork and historical photographs on the walls, ceilings, and even the doors. It was like walking through history. We went there for lunch at their Courtyard Restaurant. As the name suggests, Courtyard Restaurant have nice courtyard, which seemed to be very popular. For us, it was a bit too hot on that day, so we decided to sit inside. There were not many sitting indoor, seems the outdoor seating was more popular. We ordered Flagship Brewery Flight so we can try some of their beers made in their brewery. we chose six different types of beers; some dark, some fruity, and some light ones. Each one had distinctive flavors, and we enjoyed them all. For food, I ordered Agnes' Breakfast Sandwich, which was a nice sandwich, good size and all, but the price felt a bit high since it doesn't come with any side. Overall, it was very satisfying. Our friend ordered a burger with side of fries or tots, and she went with tater tots. Their tots are quite good! We did add an order of their Cajun Tots to share, with peppercorn ranch. It had a nice kick to it, and was quite addictive! My hubby went with JR's Jumbo Deluxe and substituted the side with a soup, since we already had a additional order of tots to share. The soup was comforting, and the burger came loaded with protein. It was juicy and tasty. We had a fun lunch, but unfortunately, the service was almost nonexistent. We felt like they focused more on the customer sitting outside, and we were completely forgotten. Due to this issue, the lunch took a very long time, causing us to cancel the next appointment we had on schedule. The server did apologize at the end when we talked to her about it, and gave us a few of discounts by giving us Happy Hour pricing on a couple of items we ordered. If it wasn't for the lack of service, we would've enjoyed the experience much more.

Yelp
We were looking for a McMenamins near the airport and found the Kennedy School! ("Amazing" doesn't even begin to cover it!) It's an old repurposed school building with many tiny bars (including detention), a principal's office, gym, theater and boiler room--all worth exploring. Dinner outside in the courtyard was awesome. The many "classrooms" have been transformed into guest rooms -- all have colorful names/histories and will require a closer look during our next visit. There's a heated pool outside, which looks like a recent addition -- so there are modern conveniences but it's still an eye-popping ancient school. Go there!!!

Yelp
This place was so friggin cool. This was one of the last places we went to in Portland and I really feel like we need to come back during the day to see how festive it is. Walking around at night was interesting. It felt like an After School night but after finding out that your kid is in danger of failing a certain subject and you need an alcoholic beverage to drink your sorrows away. Enter McMenamins. Every room is something different. Theres multiple different bars for different classrooms. Theres like a movie theatre here and also a swimming pool. Im pretty sure you can stay here too which sounds convenient being close to all the fun stuff. I think they have events periodically too so that probably is pretty convenient. This particular night we just wanted a nice little night cap to unwind and play some cards. We ordered a High Council Furnace and an Apple a Day. Both were pretty tasty. I loved the flavors of the cinnamon and whiskey blending with the apple cider. It was super autumn. It was super clean and relatively quiet when we went too. We just reminisced about our trip while we were there and agreed how theres so much personality to Portland. I mean the fact that some peeps took a school and turned it into an alcoholic haven is mind blowing. And we still didn't see everything there. I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Kennedy School is such a cool place!! I walked around for hours in awe of the history, art, and ambiance. And it inspired my mind to remember my own elementary school. We stayed in Mrs. Francis room (105). I love how there is a bit of double security hallway to get to your room. The hallways are basically open to the public so how you get to your room also keeps the noise out. We barely heard noise from the hall. Our room was cute and cozy. Having the original closet space with the chalkboard was so much fun - even for two adults. Solving the riddle for the day and exploring the halls ensures you see the entire establishment. And they have so many other amenities. I could go on and on with the good stuff. However, one negative is the soaking pool was full the entire weekend we stayed. Since it's open to the public, it was always full. A real bummer since we paid a lot of money to stay here.

Yelp
My absolute favorite spot for an adult beverage, a soak in the soaking pool, a nice bite, and then to be on my way... I love the McMenamins properties and this one of my personal faves. Probably because I am a teacher and having a bourbon in the principal's office is a naughty little thing that only fellow teachers will truly understand. I love the school and its unbelievable and delicious bizarreness; I feel at home in the chaos. The pool is crazy easy to reserve online which I love (you can generally see days and times that are pretty clear). My kiddo and I had a full hour to ourselves on an absolute perfect sunny PDX day. We just floated. It was incredible. Really yummy dishes, super nice staff, and one of my favorite vibes in Portland.

Yelp
So many words to describe McMenamins Kennedy School -- historic, quirky, vintage, old-fashioned, cozy, maybe even haunted? ;) My company booked a conference for our team of 27 here, so I stayed here for 3 nights. I really LOVED this place! Immediately walking in, you can feel the history of the former schoolhouse with the artworks and murals covering the walls. Some artwork might give off a haunted feel, if you're into that stuff ;) Seems like McMenamins is well-known for turning these former buildings into boutique hotels, and I love that they kept so much personality of the buildings. The architecture was very interesting and seems to be remnants of the original building where there are small hallways connecting pairs of rooms that were former classrooms; it's not a huge hotel so has a cozy feel and even has rooms in an adjacent 2-story "English building". Each hotel room has its own original chalkboard or has literary-based decor. Mine had a cute drawing of a horse :) I love the HUGE windows for lots of daylight to stream in. The rooms don't have TVs which may be out of the norm compared to other modern hotels. My company had our small 2-day conference in the Jordan room, which was able to fit our group of 27 nicely. They also provided breakfast and lunch catering - eggs, bacon, pastries, coffee, tacos and sandwiches for lunch, nothing mindblowing but appreciated the service. Again, the room very schoolhouse vibes with chalkboards and nursery rhymes painted on the wall. I checked out a couple other offerings within the hotel. We ate at the Courtyard restaurant a few times, which had a varied menu of entrees. I got fish and chips and a cheeseburger when I visited. I also liked the cider and beer selections! We also visited the Boiler Room Bar after hours a couple of nights, with shuffleboard and pool to entertain us! A few colleagues also visited the soaking pool, a smallish warm pool with jets, located in the middle of the hotel, open to the public as well. It seems to be a popular spot for visitors and locals alike! Lastly, they had a cute photobooth tucked in one of the corners of the hotel, loved getting this little souvenir! So many fun spots within the hotel, it was nice that we didn't have to go far during our stay. Overall, loved it and hope to visit again soon!

Yelp
We went here Sunday the 23rd for our 40th anniversary. Employees were nice and friendly. We had our two dogs so we could not get a room with a king size bed. I would also check next time to make sure we were not on the street side again. And hearing all the car noise all night long. Also being across from the soaking pool and next to the reception area was not ideal either. Would like to give this place another chance if I can find a dog sitter.

Yelp
I love the soaking pools! I've never stayed overnight before but I love the soaking. It's so easy to book. The warm is perfect. I got my first ever drink here too. The staff are so nice. It's very rustic vibes. The pool area is nice. Small though. There are hooks for your stuff and lockers. There is a changing room. Bring flip flops.

Yelp
Attend a company get together that included a nights stay. Our team had the joy to experience the restaurant, bars, and Library meeting room. Where to begin. Let's start with, where else can you roam the high school grounds with a beer in hand. Be sure to bring my swim trunks next trip as I heard great things about the soaking pool. My room was fun. Chose one with bathroom though no desk or space to work. Heck who wants to work when you can enjoy the establishment, food, and beer. Do have to give a shout out to the Boiler Room Bar. Two story bar open in the evening. This is the fun bar with a shuffle board, pinball, and pool table. FYI each bar in here has at least one different beer not served elsewhere. Overall, fun place with history and lots to offer. Had a blast.

Yelp
I was doing a solo trip from Cali to Oregon and a friend recommended I go to McMenamin's Kennedy School. I'm so glad I checked it out because it's awesome! It's such a cool mix of history facts, art, themed rooms, & delicious food & drinks! There are so many rooms/areas to explore that I literally spent like 4 hours checking out each space and chatting with the staff. Megan in the Tiki Room and Peter in the Detention Room were both great!! Super friendly, welcoming, and offered great conversation. Really enjoyed chatting with them both! I'd love to come back next time I'm in Oregon and am also inspired to check out the other McMenamin establishments.

Yelp
What a cool place. I've been bringing all my out of state friends to visit and they've all loved it. It's an old school converted into a hotel, multiple bars, theater, and just a generally cool hang out spot. My fav activity is wandering throughout the halls looking at the creepy art and exploring the eclectic bars. They often play both classic and out there movies in their theatre, and serve you hot food options while you're sitting on a sofa. They also have themed weekends (Harry Potter, Lord of the rings) sometimes in case you want to plan ahead. I'll probably be back multiple times next few years with friends.
google avatar

Courtney S.

Yelp
It's an old school turned boutique hotel equipped with a theater, soaking pool, courtyard restaurant, boiler room (bar) and brewery. It got a little jammed in the boiler room bar with patrons. Well maybe Portland has small venues in general. The firepit was the cherry on top to being rained on and cold during our time in Portland :-)
google avatar

Yelp
What a cool place nestled in the Concordia neighborhood. The ambiance is so warm, inviting and curious. There are many bars to check out inside and a relaxing soaking pool. They have special events like the film festival I went to last night. Great tots of course!

Yelp
We like Kennedy school and visit whenever they have the Harry Potter event or other fun stamps. The food is pretty much the same at most places. Prices are on the rise and the food quality has stayed the same. The Butterbeer was yummy and I got to keep the cup as a memorabilia.

I just stayed here for a work trip but unfortunately left early because my room was very haunted! Totally cool if you are into that but I am a baby about that sort of stuff. The room itself was nice and I loved having everything on one campus. I enjoyed my first evening in the soaking pool and explored the bars within the hotel. I am easily spooked so think will have to stick to day time mcmenamins activities but overall the things within their control were great :)

Yelp
Came over to do passport stamping and enjoying the art murals of the school. The front entrance had an interesting statues. Lots of interesting murals everywhere. Many rooms to explore. The boiler room was the most interesting to see. There is a pool table on the second level and you go down the staircase to the bottom level to order from the menu.

Yelp
Customer service was cool. The hummus plate was good, but rather spendy. And the cod plate was just okay, def not worth $22 smacks. But it was a beautiful day to sit out on the patio to catch up with an old friend .

Yelp
Totally cool place with a great atmosphere. The broiler room is the best. They sever great old fashions the drinks there. I like the shuffle board and the pool table. The LED zeppelin pinball machines looks cool. If you come to Portland this is the place to check out. They have all kinds of little bars tucked in everywhere and even a theater that's pretty good size. The food is good and the service is amazing. I always enjoy this place.

Yelp
This definitely lives up to McMenamins name. The vibes are awesome! An old school house turned into a hotel with restaurants and bars throughout. Came to meet up with some old friends. We had our two kids, ages 8 and 1 and it was very accommodating! Food was so so and kind of spendy in my opinion, but it's worth checking out!

Yelp
We got in to Portland late on a road-trip on a Thursday night and wanted a late evening light meal before going to our motel near the airport. We were delighted to see that we could enjoy a sandwich and a beer that late at one of our favorite spots. Our waiter was also great and very attentive. All in all a great experience and we will be back.

Yelp
Review 1700! I love and miss the McMenamins brand of fun! The Kennedy School holds a special place in my heart. I have never spent the night, but I have dined in the courtyard and seen movies in the theater. The movie theater is in the gymnasium and has a comfortable, relaxed space. The burgers are amazing, as are the tots. For the theater, you order food at the counter where you get your ticket, and they bring the food to you. At the restaurant, they have table service. I have been to the detention bar, which is super cute. All of the walls are painted with murals and their restrooms have murals in them as well. Everything is well organized, very clean and well maintained. I always look forward to visiting any and all McMenamins properties and encourage everyone to visit!

Yelp
This is another gem in the McMenamins line of fun, historical establishments - and by far my favorite! Been here many times over the years - actually even had my very first lobster roll EVER here (as a special item years ago) and it was amazing. The vibe is so quirky - you definitely feel like you're walking the halls of your old elementary school - except there are bars and a lively restaurant and even a brewery haha!! The staff has always been super welcoming and friendly. The food at their main Courtyard Restaurant has always been great. On my last visit (July 2023), I had their chicken salad sandwich on croissant and it was SO GOOD!! Even their tater tots were perfectly cooked. And they even have some of the best iced tea I've had outside of the south! Their menu changes seasonally so it's always a treat to try something new. After eating, leave time to explore - the grounds are just gorgeous and you'll get lost in the nostalgia as you wander around the old school's hallways. They have several bars - one is huge and has total steampunk vibes. They have a small hotel and a salt water pool - even the bathrooms are beautiful. I'd definitely like to stay here next time - but I imagine it can be a tad spooky at night haha! The school opened back in 1915 so it's a historic building. The wall art is gorgeous and there are lots of info signs and historical pics scattered around. It's in a good location in north Portland with plenty of parking and easy to find. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the area!

Yelp
What a cool place, that could only exist and be sustained in Portland. While it's a business, it functions almost like a local community center. Hard to describe in full without wearing out my thumbs, so I won't go too far with it, but my wife and I stayed for a night and want to bring more people back. You really feel the history of the place (opened 1915 as an elementary school). The rooms are classrooms, with high ceilings and a full wall of gorgeous windows. Spacious, charming. We enjoyed our dinner despite being a little overly familiar with the standard McMenamins menu. And that bread pudding, damn. We saw the soaking pool but it seemed kinda full so we watched a movie in their theater, which consists of a sea of expired sofas and a modest screen, but good projector and pretty solid sound. They have a couple bars that seem very intimate, maybe a little tight for a misanthrope like me but I can see the appeal. A gift shop, a few restaurant spaces, a music performance space. And even the surrounding neighborhood seems nice. Check it out!

Yelp
A fun kitschy gem to visit in PDX, definitely a fun place and great novelty in seeing a school transformed into a brewery & hotel. Staff here is super chill and accommodating. As for the beers, I had the trippy cider, kennedy School Kolsch, West of Da Mitten IPA, and the Gnome'r J Simpson Hazy IPA. The tripppy cider & the hazy ipa were the true winners. However, I'm not a kolsch guy, and saw a ton of people ordering that

Yelp
No , Alice Cooper , school is NOT out forever . C'mon , it's McMenamins , but with a school theme . Principals office , Honours and Detention rooms. But unlike being at school , you can booze it up , shack up with your favourite gender, or chill in the stale popcorn lobby while waiting for your movie in the theater. Nice restaurant here , outside seating , when weather friendly . Private bars here and there. Passport friendly. Dog friendly. And very liver friendly. Have fun.

Yelp
I've been coming here off and on for years and have always been a McMenamins fan. My girl and I came here for dinner and a movie. We saw The Amateur, had some food, then decided to stay for the 10pm showing of Death of A Unicorn. We both really loved the vibe, good food, excellent service- all the wait staff was on point. I also really enjoyed the livingroom-style seating in the theater.

Yelp
There really is something for everyone at K-school. I've stayed overnight, trekked around through the various bars, played games, seen movies, attended special events, and most recently, come just for a soak and lunch. At some of the McM locations, we've seen a decline in food options or service at times, but K-school seems to be holding up well. Enjoyed my pool time and lunch and look forward to returning. Wish management would return the tip money.

Yelp
We are outside and enjoyed a lovely afternoon lunch. My friend said it was a great tuna sandwich. We enjoyed our server Ashley. I bring all my out of town guests here and they live it. I also found out that you don't have to stay at the hotel to use the soaking pool.

Yelp
There isn't enough space here to talked about this location!! Just go! Don't hesitate! Grab a drink at detention or any of the quant bars and walk around the property and take in all the history. The Boiler Room is two stories and has shuffle board and pool tables.

Yelp
I loved our stay! It was a complete experience without leaving the property--dinner and a movie in the theater, with a soak in the pool after. Breakfast was top-notch and the entire place, although full, was very quiet and peaceful. Be aware that some of the bars are closed on weeknights, which was a bit of a disappointment to me because I really wanted to see the boiler room. 10 out of 10!!!

Yelp
I do wish that McMenamins would concentrate on providing edible food for their customers! We went to an event at The Kennedy School and the best item we ate was popcorn! -The fka Wilbur Hamburger was extra well done with a dry bun, you could feel each bite actually suck moisture out of our mouths. -Our Cajun Tater Tots were cold and under seasoned but then seasoning won't stick to cold fried food! -The Spinach Artichoke Dip had a 1/2" + thick hard scab on the portions next to the bowl as in what happens when you microwave the living crap out of it, then serve it, inedible! -The chips were perfectly fried in oil that should have been changed a few days earlier. -The Caesar Salad was under portioned and under dressed and we were unable to locate any Parmesan. Serving it in an aluminum bowl was unappetizing however the lemon wedge was able to eat some tarnish off the surface of the bowl/pie pan/dog dish. The saving grace is the employees! The bartender for the event was off the charts kind, fun and everything you could hope for from your bartender! Kudos!!! The drinks were also good, the Blackberry Cider is great! The feel of The Kennedy School, as with most McMenamins, is atheistically pleasing and interesting with a friendly vibe! This is why it is so disappointing to eat at McMenamins! The description on the menu activates your tastebuds and you begin to anticipate your delicious meal, then it arrives and suddenly you remember why you avoid eating at them! Sad! I've literally eaten at McMenamins hundreds of times due to meetings with people at them and can recall maybe three times when the food was served properly prepared... I guess go there to drink and hope you don't get hungry!

Yelp
This is now 2023, we kick off our 2023 NeighborWalk here at Kennedy School, and after 2.21 miles we ended back here, and we ended up having lunch here too! We got seats outdoor in the patio, it was cool windy (the sun wasn't coming out until 1pm), and it was chilly, hubby ended up going back to the car to get my jacket. (My fingers we so cold after lunch, but enjoyed the outdoorsy seats). Hubby ordered the Bacon Cheese Burger and a cup of the African Spiced Chicken Soup. He enjoyed both of them. They were delicious. But he took half of the burger, to eat later. I ordered the Half Dilly Tuna Sandwich on sourdough bread, and salad. I thought it was also delicious! I ate all my salad, but had 1/2 of that to eat another meal. I wasn't that hungry! Service was slower than usual, since there were others from our group who stopped by for lunch, as well. Our server was friendly and attentive. The restrooms were awesome! Enjoy the rest of the building. We ended back outside, to take photos with an artichoke big leaf in the background, for my flowers. I'm a craft artist.

Yelp
I was there for a meeting, overall I liked the cozy, funky vibe. I have a complaint about the food. I ordered the eggs Benedict and it came with scrambled eggs, it wasn't a mistake because my coworker got eggs Benedict and also had scrambled eggs. A poached egg with its yoke oozing into the hollandaise sauce is what makes a Benedict good, scrambled eggs drenched in sauce on an under toasted English muffin made me sad.

Yelp
This was our first time here. Interesting concept, but seemed poorly executed. 2 big parties ahead of us took forever to seat because their whole parties weren't there yet, but in spite of lots of empty tables, the staff waited until the large parties were all present before that sat anyone, including waiting parties of two. What started as no one waiting behind us soon grew 5 or so parties and we continued to wait. They finally sat the big parties but were apparently understaffed so we waited another ten minutes then left. A few other potential diners decided to follow our lead. I can't comment on the food, but being massively understaffed I expect the service would be as slow or slower than getting seated. It might have been freak night where a lot of staff didn't show, but the staff there did not seem to have the extra gear to pick up any slack.

Yelp
Fun place to visit and get a drink! Location: If you are staying in downtown portland, it's somewhat of a drive but well worth it. You can park on the street or they have a parking lot in the back. The school itself is quite massive and comes with a lot of history. There is also a movie theater in the school where you can watch movies. Food: The food is subpar. I would not recommend going for merely the food itself but rather the whole experience. Drinks: One really cool thing about this establishment is that they brew their own beer. You can order flights to try their beers or cider. They also have more than one bar hidden throughout the school. Service: The bartenders and the servers are all super friendly. They also hold a lot of knowledge of the history of the school. Overall, I would highly recommend stopping by and checking this place out!

Yelp
Such a fun place to stay! We enjoyed the restaurant, soaking pool and theatre. We've decided that we want to visit all the McMenamins.

Yelp
What a fun place! I was having dinner with my co worker who suggested this place - as you can see from the many reviews, they've taken an old school and turned it into a restaurant/brewery/hotel/theater/bar and more. Whoever did the interiors work did an amazing job - they've kept all the great vintage elements and added lots of local art. I especially liked the tiny bars dotted around the building - they feel like little speakeasies. We had dinner in the main room and as have others have said, the food was plenty fine. I had the chickpea sandwich with tots and liked it. Other reviews have gripes about service but we had a great server Jeffrey who kept us laughing all night. Definitely worth checking out.

Yelp
So many reasons to come here, over and over again! The only "negative" thing I've encountered is trying to find parking sometimes in the parking lot (east side, behind the building) and adjacent streets, if they have multiple events happening. * Breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner inside or outside on the patio/courtyard) * Movie theater with overstuffed chairs & couches * Soaking pool * Many sizes of meeting rooms * Meals catered in meeting rooms * Fun events (some occur regularly) like Drag Queen Bingo with Poison Waters The staff is great, very accommodating!

Yelp
been coming to Kennedy school for years but this may very well be our last! Unfortunately Mcmenamins is unable to provide adequate parking for people who actually pay for a room verses those who are visiting for some of the other amenities like movies, the pool, restaurant, booze. nothing like driving around in circles so you can get to the room you have booked for four nights! They have a limited designated area in the back in the dark supposedly for just hotel guests which is laughable. they provide you with a card for your dash when you check in but only four of the twelve vehicles I checked this evening had the permits to park there. but of course no employee actually enforces this which is LAME to say the least so it's quite farcical. How NOT to run a business!

Yelp
My favorite home away from home place. I stay here often. Friendly relaxing Portland vibe. All of the staff are amazing everyone from the guy that shuts down the soaking pool, highest quality bar tenders (always yummy drinks), accommodating front desk, late night Happy hour so many delicious options!
